Yara Shahidi in a Ralph Lauren jumpsuit at the SAG Awards: too cool for school?

SAG Awards 2018 Arrivals

Everyone was going crazy about Yara Shahidi on the SAG Awards red carpet last night. Yara is 2018’s Lisa Bonet, have you noticed that? She’s the It Girl, the teenage-actress transitioning into young-adulthood, with a lot of style, grace and coolness. Like, I know Yara is way too cool for me to even discuss. Her jumpsuit is Ralph Lauren and it has a train. Her hair and makeup are perfect. Everything about this just looks so cool. My only minor criticism is with Ralph Lauren – they should have shortened the train a little bit.

Betty Gabriel – from Get Out!! – wore this odd-yet-pleasing Phuong My dress.

Brie Larson should have walked the SAG carpet earlier than she did, because there were not enough photos of her Gucci gown. I really like this – it looks rich and saturated and special.

The jumpsuit is cute but much better without the train.

    • boredblond says:

Yeah..just a very simple jumpsuit..I would’ve used all that tacked on fabric to make a fabulous long sweeping jacket..shrug..

    • courtney says:

im with you on that. she is stunning though

    • lucy2 says:

I agree – just the jumpsuit would have been bold and different. She is a gorgeous young woman, but all that fabric draws the attention away from her.

    • carol says:

I was just going to say that about Yara’s outfit. Nice jumpsuit but the train is a little off putting. Her hair and makeup is off-the-charts terrific though.

    • Ozogirl says:

      Totally agree.

    • milla says:

But her face is amazing. Supermodel amazing

    • Pandy says:

Yeah, I don’t like how the train is not the same shade of black. Looks tacked on. I do like Brie’s dress and Betty’s (I think?) dress – different and super cute in that plaid.

  2. Nicole says:

Yara looked amazing. I wish they hemmed the pants just a tad. Brie looked really pretty and casual.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I agree on all counts. Yara looked so beautiful and effortless. Her face is just exquisite and that lip color looks perfect on her.

  3. Lenn says:

Yara looked spectacularly cool. I love her make-up. Brie Larsons dress is wearing her.

  4. tracking says:

She has amazing style. I’m having a hard time getting into Grownish though (probably generational, since for me A Different World is a hard act to follow).

  5. smee says:

Yara is stunningly beautiful. I don’t understand the train or the pants length, but I love it otherwise. I think Grown-ish will get better if it stays on for a while.

    • Maria F. says:

i agree. The pants are in dire need of shortening and the train overwhelms here.

But apart of that she looks stunning.

I am not the target audience for Grown-ish, but sofar i like how they tackle college life. It is also interesting to see how electronic devices and social media are so important for this generation (and played no part in the story lines of A different world ). Times have changed.

      • elimaeby says:

I am also not the target audience for Grown-ish, but I am also not too far removed from college life (late twenties). I love how honest and non-judgmental the writing is: the drinking, the casual prescription drug use. That’s all happening in real life for real young adults, and if the target audience can see their real lives reflected? I can only hope it makes them feel more normal and not like they have to hide their problems and struggles. Either way, this old-ish lady is enjoying the show and the gorgeous Yara.

      • Mama says:

I like watching Grown-ish with my daughter (16). I think it gives her a peek into college life (some of the pitfalls) and allows us to have conversations about it – what is realistic and what is not… and if she could have made better choices. So while I’m not the target audience I think it is a great show for young adults and older teens.

      • monette says:

I’m 32, definitely not the target audience, but it’s growing on me :))
@Mama: that sounds really good. You are an amazing mum.
        Yara’s face is absolutely perfect!

    • broodytrudy says:

The pants are bad. Too long, too wide. Otherwise she looks perfect.

  6. Mia4s says:

I liked Brie’s dress but I’m not sure she did? I don’t think I’ve seen one photo of her looking happy.

Yara’s look is very cool but yes that train looks like a pain.

  7. Nev says:

    Yara is sooooo happening!!!
    Love grownish too!!!!

  8. Ashley says:

Emma Stone wore a jumpsuit like that already a few years ago to the globes.

  9. Jess says:

Love Yara and that’s a very cool jumpsuit. Brie’s dress is also amazing. And speaking of Brie, is Casey Affleck showing up at any of these shows? I’m assuming he’s persona non grata (one year too late) and I’m just wondering if he’s actually handing out awards like Brie or if they keep making excuses to have someone else do it. Maybe the SAGs had all female presenters?

    • Marianne says:

I think the only awards show where they get the past winners to present is the Oscars. So perhaps he’ll show up to that, Although to be fair, the SAGs this year decided to all female presenters and maybe the oscars will do something similar. *shrugs*.

  10. Jker says:

Shahidi needs to be cloned. Intelligent, articulate, fearless, and talented (not to mention Kravitz level stunning beauty).

Gabriel looks like talisa’s mom from GOT. Like i expect rob and catelyn stark to offer apologies from beyond the grave about failing to save her kind, brilliant and beautiful doctor daughter from the red wedding. Haven’t seen GET OUT yet, but clearly I need to.

Brie looks like she’s feeling over it all. But that dress is one of the best I’ve EVER seen her wear.

Chau’s dress is 20 levels of 1980s prom nightmare. Ill fitting, bad color, reductive and fugly.

  11. Char says:

    Yara looks amazing, as usual!

  12. Lala says:

Yara looking like a young Angela Basset got me TRIPPING! I LOVE that outfit…just ordered something similar that I cannot WAIT to rock at work!

  13. Valiantly Varnished says:

Yara looks flawless. She serves up so much black girl magic. Between her and Zendaya…the riches. I like Betty Gabriel’s dress too. Oddly pleasing is a perfect way to describe it. Brie’s dress is forgettable

  14. Jayna says:

She was the most beautiful beautywise last night. She in unbelievably striking in that photo.

  15. me says:

Yara always looks stunning. I love her new show “Grown-ish”. She’s also very smart. This girl is the full package !

  16. Her Higness says:

I need waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more coverage on BETTY GABRIEL

  17. Sarah says:

    Yara is stunning.

  18. serena says:

Yara really looks gorgeous (and yes, now that you’ve said, she IS this generation’s Liza Bonet!!).

  19. I Choose Me says:

Here for Yara and Betty Gabirel. They look gorgeous. My only issue with Yara’s outfit is that the hem of the pants needed tailoring.
