Drake bought groceries for everyone at a supermarket, told them to fill carts

I feel like Drake comes along and acts all Drake-like when I need him the most. Is Drake my guardian angel? Drake just released a new single, God’s Plan, that made it into the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart’s Top 10 in its second week, making it his fastest climbing song. Earlier this week, he shot the video, including scenes from Miami Senior High School. Before he left campus, he made a $25,000 donation and gave the school OVO-designed uniforms:

Keeping with the Stay in School theme, Drake surprised University of Miami student, Destiny James, with a $50,000 scholarship for her college tuition:

This happened today. I applied to scholarships last year for which I had to write an essay. I received those scholarships and thought that was the end of it. Apparently, my essay and my story made it to other departments. I was contacted this weekend about doing a video speaking about where I come from, things I've been through, and why it is so important for scholarship donors to continue to donate. This was the surprise the whole time. Drake told me that he has read great things about me and appreciates how hard I've worked through so many trials and decided to give me $50K for my tuition. @champagnepapi THANK YOU SO MUCH!!' You don't understand what this means to me! I would've never imagined this happening to me. I'm just a girl from Denmark, SC that wants to MAKE IT and be somebody and for you to see my hard work means the world. Thank you so much. God I thank you. You are so great and amazing! Thank you for blessing me when I thought my hard work was going unnoticed. I'm living out my dreams. God's Plan 🙏🏾

Then, I guess it was lunch time for Drake so he popped in to Sabor Tropical Supermarket to pick up some munchies when he pulled out a megaphone and told the shoppers to “load up their carts” because he was footing the bill for all their groceries.

By the end of the day, Drake found his way to Lotus House, the only shelter in Miami for homeless women and children, and dropped off $50,000 so they could complete their construction. In addition to the check, Drake gave out toys and games to all the kids and $150 gift cards to the women.

Many people thought this was all a part of his God’s Plan video or part of some larger God’s Plan theme. Not to be dismissive but who cares? I am generally a fan of people out there making things better for others so I’m not going to over-analyze it. It’s obvious in all the video’s and pics that Drake is loving this as much as the recipients. So, whatever his motivation is, whether it’s to support the message of his album or just to do good, you go Guardian Angel Drake! Because right now, I need people like you out there in the world. And maybe, like this shopper suggests, I can do my part and pay it forward *pulls change jar from the cupboard* Happy Friday, y’all.

I don’t understand the people who say it’s just for publicity? Yeah obviously he’s getting good PR from this but he’s also putting his money where his mouth is and helping people in a concrete way. Especially those women and children in the shelter who probably don’t get to experience something like getting a brand new toy or treating themselves. Good on you Drake!

Whatever the motive, the action probably inspired others to give. Positive outcome in a very negative world. Kudos.

Agreed. Whether or not his reasons were selfish, the impact is real. I am sure the students, teachers, and passers-by who benefited don’t care why he did it. Good on Drake.

  3. Snowflake says:

How sweet. I know I’m in the minority on this, but I’ve always thought he is handsome. People got help, doesn’t matter the motivation!

  6. HH says:

Is he only giving away money for current tuition? How does he feel about student loans? lol!

Can’t help but love the Canadian rapper/“Jimmy”. He’s not perfect but good on him for doing all that no matter the reason…wish I was at the groceries! Name brand everything, steaks, salmon, and snacks galore!!!!!

My intuition has NEVA failed me…I’ve ALWAYS had a soft spot for him…he’s earned it!

Even if the motivation is selfish, I prefer to look at the outcome rather the intent when it comes to philanthropy. These are wonderful things he’s done. I’m so happy.

      +1

Of course it’s for album sales but along the way, he gave back to the community that he filmed his video.
I’m a big sucker for those giving money to our schools and to students education. Those student loans are killers. And the groceries! These are all like practical gifts that the average person can use. I like the idea of going to the shelter and handing out gifts instead of just mailing a check.

This is so amazing!!! I’m so jealous because I long to hit a massive lotto just to give it all away!!! I could only dream of how much fun he had doing all this.

    • lucy2 says:

I know, anytime I’ve thrown a buck or two in for lottery tickets, I think about all the awesome stuff I could do donating MAJOR money.

I generally think Drake is kind of a dork, but whatever he was doing here, it really helped people, and that’s awesome.

      • me says:

I know. I always dream about winning the lotto big time and doing A LOT of good deeds. It would make me so happy.

About 3 years ago Drake visited my work, and chatted with us for an hour or so. His manager and 1 or 2 others were there with him.

He was due to play a sold-out arena show (Moda Center, Portland) that night. Well, at the end of his chat with us, he invited ALL of us to his show that night. His manager looked horrified – the shoe was sold out, after all, and Drake had just invited about 50 people.

They worked it out, though, and a number of people came to work the next morning looking hung over…one was still wearing yesterday’s clothes…it’s safe to say a good time was had by all.

There was nothing publicized about it…he just seems to genuinely like to surprise people with kind gestures. Super cool 🙂

  18. Bibi says:

Super nice gesture of him ! 😍💞💞💞 And to me, he is a very looking guy😎Great! Now that I heard these stories I see him even more handsome.
It’s like that neighbor you don’t even know his name and one day you see him helping an elderly woman with his grocery bags…and you’re watching thru your window, so he doesn’t know you’re looking at him. Next thing you know, you pay more attention and turns out he is sooo 🔥. Good for Drake, whatever motivation he had, he decided to do GOOD with his money. 👏👏👏👏
