John Krasinski: No one called me about ‘The Office’ reboot, I’d love to do it

I was watching The Office just this weekend, of which I had only seen maybe two episodes and some clips prior. My 13 year-old is watching it, his last show was Parks and Rec, so he has great taste. The Office is hilarious, fast-moving and irreverent. There are so many talented actors in it like of course Steve Carrell and John Krasinski, but also Mindy Kaling, Ed Helms, Craig Robinson and Phyllis Smith. Krasinski and Carrell are the big movie stars but a lot of the other actors are standout character actors with steady careers. I can imagine that the reboot, which we’ve been hearing about from industry outlets for a couple of months, is going to be expensive for NBC. Well there’s one less paycheck they’ll have to worry about, because John Krasinski told Ellen DeGeneres on her show that no one contacted him about it. We have already heard that Carrell won’t be back and that it’s going to be a mix of old and new actors.

Krasinski has been getting press for his Amazon series based on a Tom Clancy novel, Jack Ryan. That’s not out until August though. He also wrote and directed an upcoming horror movie which he costars in with his wife, Emily Blunt, called A Quiet Place. (I got all excited thinking that was coming out soon, but it’s not out until April 6th.) Here’s some of what he told Ellen. He had some really cute stories about his daughters, who are three and eighteen months old.

On his daughters with Emily Blunt, Hazel and Violet
The last time [their names] were popular was in 1890. So we were like ‘we’re safe.’

They’re amazing and they’re geniuses. The other day it was a rainy day and I started singing [Violet] this song for kids which goes ‘Rolly poley,’ all of a sudden Violet who is 18 months goes ‘yeah baby’ [in a deep voice]. We have no idea what that was. Then we turned it on in the car and at the end of the song this guy just comes in and goes ‘yeah baby.’ I’m not kidding [Violet] looked at me like ‘are we good?’ It was weird.

Ellen: Do the girls like the beard?
Yes they loved it. I thought they would be terrified. I shaved it after the movie and my three year-old said ‘What happened to the beard?’

And I said ‘Oh I shaved it, it’s so smooth you can touch it’ and she went ‘put it back.’

Well I’m not a Lego guy I can’t just snap it back.

Ellen: I heard that they’re going to reboot The Office. Did you hear that?
I did hear that, on the Internet. Guess who didn’t get a call? Me. What does that say? NBC is like ‘do you know who we didn’t like? Jim.’

Would you do it?
Oh my God, are you kidding? I’d love to get that gang back together.

This reminds me of Melissa McCarthy revealing that no one asked her to be in the Gilmore Girls remake. She made a public statement about it and filmmakers then worked her in. It’s like producers don’t even think to approach the most successful stars of the original show as they assume their salary requirements will be too high and/or that they’re too busy. I’ve only been watching The Office for a few hours now and even I know that it needs Jim! This is a major oversight and I hope that he’ll at least be able to make a cameo.

Here’s the first part of John’s interview:

And here’s the second part where he talks about A Quiet Place. Ellen and John try to make each other laugh in a staring contest and there’s a surprise at the end.

Ugh no reboot please! Don’t ruin this for me NBC lol

  2. PIa says:

I read on Lainey that John was initially a bit jealous of Steve’s breakout success…

  3. Gnerd says:

Ugh, please don’t. Krasinkski is okay but Jim is kind of the worst. I really resented how they changed Tim from OG The Office into an overwritten, perfect, fantasy boyfriend/husband. That and Jim was a manipulative jerk a lot of the time but never got called on it. He didn’t feel like a character, he felt like a vessel for the writers to get out their boyfriend/true love fantasies. Ick.

Yes!!!! All of this!!! Thank you!!!

Especially that crap in the last season? Where he didn’t even ASK HIS WIFE her opinion about any of the choices he made? Or when he “bought Pam a house” (which was his parents’ old beater), AGAIN without asking her opinion or involving her financially?
Jim Halper is the absolute worst TV Boyf ever, right up there next to Ross Gellar.

Ugh please no. The last couple of seasons without Carrell were not good. I watch the office all the time, usually when I workout so I can keep my mind off of the torture my body is enduring. I always start over when I get to California if DeAngelo slips through every now and then.

Robert California is when it changed for me too. I loved the earlier seasons and usually go all the way through with a rewatch, but everything around that time is really uncomfortable, and not in a funny Office kind of way.

    He’s the hotness.

I love John. I love The Office. But, no, no to the reboot.
Considering Jim and Pam were basically moving from Scranton in the last episode, should there be a reboot, they should just be cameo roles.

  7. Bridget says:

John was, by multiple reports, pretty over The Office, and was rolling with the movie star crowd thanks to his wife (who to give him credit, he knows and appreciates what a catch she is). Goes to show, be nice to people on your way up because they’re going to be the ones you see on the way back down.

You know that gif of Michael screaming “no, god please, god, no” ? That is how I feel about that reboot.

Link to clip here, but I’m not sure it’ll post. https://youtu.be/31g0YE61PLQ

Not a fan of JKrasinski. I pretty much found him to be a big turd when he dissed Jenna after she tried to be real in interviews about their chemistry and why it worked. His character and he seem like a sarcastic, frat guy brahhh. That’s not acting, it’s just a reminder that those types exist. Boo, no thanks.

  10. Kate says:

Him saying “I feel bad for her” and using words like “wildly” make me feel like he’s a turd and arrogant to boot.

  11. lucy2 says:

I’m a big fan of the series, but I’ll be surprised and disappointed if the reboot happens. It hasn’t been long enough, and when the rumors got out all of the fans were like “thanks but no thanks”. Leave it alone. Create something new.

  12. hogtowngooner says:

Ugh I loved The Office but can we STAHP with all the reboots?? I know networks are playing it super safe with their programming choices but it’s just lazy to tap a dry well.

The Office was good TV like popcorn is a good snack. But it wasn’t…soul satisfying. The UK version was. I had the UK version memorized when word got out that there would be an American version. I enjoyed the US Office way more than I thought I would, though, and it’s an easy show to marathon watch. But I never really got invested in the characters. Michael was annoying and Jim and Pam were too twee for me.

I always got the sense that John Krasinski appreciated The Office, but also felt he was better than it.

    • Harryg says:

The US version was crap in my opinion and they should have just left it alone, like they should with so many things.

  14. Harper says:

I haven’t minded some of the recent reboots, but doesn’t it feel way too soon for this? I’m too lazy to look up when The Office aired its last episode, but I know it was after I got married, and I’ve only been married for five years. That is not a long enough break to get all nostalgic over it, imho.
