Emily Blunt in Schiaparelli at the Oscars: one of the worst or not bad?

Emily Blunt presented Best Original Song last night along with her costar in the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns, Lin-Manuel Miranda. (That went to Coco’s Kristin Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for “Remember Me.”) Emily is not one of those actresses you see in a bad gown and get schadenfreude. Her pale blue Schiaparelli dress and styling were so bad I felt sorry for her. The gown has little puff sleeves, a turned-up gathered collar, tiny polka dots all over it and white leaf-like embellishments around the bodice sewed on with black stitching like an afterthought. It doesn’t make sense, and she looks like she knows that. Maybe without the junk on the front and in a darker color this would be passable. Emily was one of the celebrities who went across the street to surprise the audience watching a preview of Wrinkle in Time. That looked like a lot of fun and a nice way to break up a too-long night.

Samara Weaving was in Three Billboards, she played the too-young wife of Frances McDormand’s character’s abusive ex-husband (John Hawkes). She’s also in Shiaparelli Couture with bad styling. I like that she went with a bolder color, and I like the two shades of pink, but the top is not tailored well and this is a dress we’ve seen many times before. Also, I dislike the smokey eye trend and feel like only Eva Green can pull it off like this, but maybe I just don’t know this actress well enough.

Abbie Cornish, also in Three Billboards in case you didn’t waste your time on that film, was in Elie Saab. This is so aggressively bad I don’t know where to start. Abbie has a mean stylist, bad style or both, remember what she wore to the SAGs? The color is bad, the cut is unflattering, and this dress has way too many details. There are cutout shoulders, wing-like sleeves, a complicated cutout pattern at the waist and bust, lace, sequins and beading. Considering how much work must have gone into this it’s tragic.

Betty Gabriel, who played Georgina in Get Out, looked so different last night that it took me a moment to recognize her. I thought she was much older given her character, but she looks 30-something. (I can’t find her exact age, good for her.) She was in Tony Ward Couture and while I thought that this was too low cut she was also a standout on the red carpet in that color and cut, plus her styling was gorgeous. I love how the ragged gold and blue pattern along the top is repeated on the skirt along with some carefully placed leaves, which are mirrored on the shoulders.

Samantha Weaving was hilarious in that film but I don’t think this hair colour suits her.

I’m confused about Abby Cornish. I’ve watched her work for something like 15 years and her body hasn’t changed but her face is somehow fuller? Not in a surgery way but a weight gain way? But without weight gain? She’s beautiful but her work in that film was confused at best.

    • SK says:

No she’s definitely put on weight all over – she used to be very slim and toned. Her body still looks great though – she is curvy and has a lovely figure and I’m sure if we saw her in person she’d still be tiny (Hollywood is so skewed and cameras add weight). She is one of those people who really shows just the slightest bit of weight gain on their face. Or else she is on some kind of steroid meds or something that can also cause a fuller face. She is still really beautiful but looks quite different.

    • broodytrudy says:

Her face looks super off to me too. She gained weight but not that much. Wtf is going on here?!

    • magnoliarose says:

Her face looks fuller than her weight gain. She looks very odd.

Emily’s dress was possibly the worst of the night for me. Just awful – I don’t understand why she would do this. Also, I hate her as a blonde, she is so much better as a brunette!

Samara’s dress is a bit of a boring prom dress that has been done a million times and looks like it’s from the early ’00’s. I think she can pull off the smokey eye with her big eyes and nice bone structure.

Abbie has put on weight (nothing wrong with that but women often struggle with it) and I don’t think she knows how to dress for that so she is draping herself in endless fabric. This dress is awful.

I don’t like big, wide V’s in dresses so I don’t mind the fabric of Betty’s dress but I dislike the top of it. Hair and make-up were great though!

    • kiddo says:

I couldnt agree more, Emily is so much better as brunette and the dress doesnt help either. Nevertheless i am happy seing her make a come back with two new upcoming movies.

    • lannisterforever says:

Emily’s dress looked like Marchesa. Enough said.

      • homeslice says:

I was floored when I read that Emily is a natural blonde??? Her hair is so, so bad this shade…and that dress??? Her stylist deserves a spanking!

  3. Sisi says:

I don’t like it when light flowy fabrics are used as structured geometric shapes. It never works. But honestly, take away the sleeves of Blunts dress and its immediately saved and beautiful.
Definitely not the worst dress of the night, by quite a large margin.

    • Esmom says:

I like the sleeves…was thinking if you took away the high neck it would be saved! Except for that top section, it really is lovely on her.

I think Betty’s would have been a favorite if that damn V wasn’t so insanely gigantic.

Cornish is really pretty, with some editing the dress could have looked lovely on her.

I don’t mind the pink and red one, I always like that color combo.

    • magnoliarose says:

I think losing the sleeves would have helped but I don’t think the color suits her at all.

  4. Chinoiserie says:

Emily Blunt’s shoulders were too much but otherwise I really liked the dress. The color expecially suits her.

  5. Tanguerita says:

I know this will sound crazy, but Betty Gabriel reminds me of Natalie Dormer. There is something about her mimic in general and her smile in particular – slightly lopsided and very charming.

    • L says:

Oh, wow! I totally see what you mean. On a similar note, it’s been bugging me a little who Olivia Munn looks like now, after her Japanese potato transformation, and this post has made me realize that she looks like a darker haired version of Emily Blunt.

    • Carey says:

      I see it now!!!

  6. Other Renee says:

I dislike dresses that are cut down to the navel and invite the girls out to play.

  7. Carmen says:

I realise that Emily Blunt’s dress will be on a lot of worst dressed lists, but omg…. I absolutely love it! Sure, it’s a bit different, but I really like the flow, the shape, the colour… <3

    • Fallon says:

I love it. Think it’s ethereal and lovely. Do wish her hair was darker.

      • Ankhel says:

I like it as well. It’s a new take on early Edwardian era gowns, what with the little train, poofy sleeves and high neck. Quite romantic, and she has the posture for it.

    • G says:

I can’t quite tell if I actually like it, or if I just don’t mind it. Not my favourite of the night, but certainly not one of the worst. She does seem a little uncomfortable in it though, which is a shame.

  8. Khymera says:

Betty’s dress is beautiful and i think her breast are small enough that she can pull off that plunging neckline without looking cheap.

  9. Ally says:

I loved Emily Blunt’s dress. Extravagant, dreamy, structured yet frothy. I’m impressed she was able to navigate it over to the other theater to surprise the plebs. Plus it’s fun to say Schia-PA-RE-lli.

  10. Caity says:

Samara weaving is an Aussie export, worked in Home and away the same soapie as Chris Hemsworth, but I don’t think they overlapped at all.
    Her uncle is Hugo weaving

  11. Pix says:

Emily’s dress reminds me of Wedgwood Jasperware. Not a fan.

  12. Miranda says:

I think the main problem with Emily’s dress is that it framed the boobs, and that never looks good. Not even Cate Blanchett can pull it off.

    • Nat says:

Thanks for posting that picture of Cate, Miranda! I thought of it the moment I saw Emily on the red carpet; Emily’s looks like a cheap knock-off.

  13. Va Va Kaboom says:

So wait… that’s not Margot Robbie?

    • lannisterforever says:

Samara is in Smilf and there they actually had someone remark on how much she looks like “The chick who plays Harley Quinn”. So you’re not the only one seeing it (I do think Margot is prettier though)

      • Anna says:

I first saw Samara weaving in a little movie on Netflix – the babysitter – and I liked her so much I went googling. She has GREAT comedic timing and it could be seen in the little screen time she has on TBISM. I personally find her much sexier than Margot Robbie – which I love also. I hope a great career for Samara – she deserves it!

  14. Lucy2 says:

These are all pretty bad, especially that red one.
Betty’s would have been my favorite of the night had it not been so low cut. The fabric and detailing is gorgeous, but it is just way, way too open.

  15. grabbyhands says:

Emily’s gown was the worst and she and Abbie Cornish’s gown exemplified the dull as dishwater blah color that was like a rash all over the red carpet. The Oscars is a time to have bold color not taupe and powder blue. With the exception of Betty Gabriel, these gowns were part of the bad trend this year-blah colors, weird cuts and too much fabric. So much unnecessary draping.

  16. deets says:

Betty’s dress is striking, one of my favourites. although something is a bit off about the skirt, but I couldn’t tell you what I’d change. I love the bodice so much, and her styling is great, one of my favourite looks.

Emily just needs to remove the shoulders and neck ruffle. It would be boring but not offensive. I like her earrings, they look like raindrops.

    • magnoliarose says:

I do like her dress but I think the V is a touch too wide but the color is lovely on her.
Abbie’s dress looks like a costume in a Sci Fi movie party scene. The color is not good for her.

  17. EMc says:

Abbie’s dress looks like it has a little pouch above her lady bits.. Like it holds the key to her chastity belt. I hate it!

I love Betty’s gown! The colors are beautiful, it’s unique, and she looks fantastic in it.

  18. marianne says:

I love the colour of Emily’s dress. I think the material is nice and I like the white detailing. However, I think the sleeves and neckline make it feel like a little girl dress. Theres something kind of twee about it. I loved Betty Gabriel’s dress though.

  19. Carmen says:

Emily Blunt looked like she was channeling Little Bo Beep. She looked all kinds of ridiculous.

    Love Betty Gabriel’s hair.

  20. Ginger says:

Emily looks like a late 60s tea cozy.

  21. vespernite says:

    Betty Gabriel….STUNNING!!

  22. Audi says:

Emily looked like an insane Victorian doll and Betty’s dress is a gorgeous color but the front is ridiculously too open. Bummer.

  23. holly hobby says:

Go back to your natural hair color Emily! Ugh the blonde washes her out!

  24. Jemimaleopard says:

Emily Blunt – votes for women!

  25. Heat says:

Go back and look at Betty on red carpets this season. She’s looked amazing!

  26. bella says:

I love, love Samra’s dress. I saw a dress like that in Harper Bazaar’s March magazine and I absolutely went gaga over it! I love that color combo–it’s my favorite. I want that gown!

  27. serena says:

They all look tragic except Betty Gabriel who looks freaking amazing (I absolutely love her dress and styling)!!
