Salma Hayek in Gucci’s collab with Dapper Dan at the VF Oscar party: party pajamas?

Salma Hayek, you may recall, wore one of the crazier Oscar gowns last night. It had a skirt of many ruffled lilac sequin layers, the bodice had crystals dripping across the front and sides and it was just blinding on camera. Kaiser floated the idea that Salma did not GAF and that she found it pretty. I’m leaning more to her not giving AF with her Vanity Fair Oscar Party look, which was like stiff fancy pajamas. We’ve seen plenty of pajamas as outwear looks recently. This was a cropped jacket with puffy bell sleeves over a floor length skirt.

The back of the jacket says “Dapper Dan.” I only know that as George Clooney’s character’s pomade of choice in O Brother, Where Art Thou? but it’s a brand that is collaborating with Gucci. Dapper Dan is a Harlem-based couturier, Daniel Day, who is known for pioneering hip hop fashion in the 80s and 90s. He was sued by major fashion labels back then and is making a comeback, with Gucci in particular acknowledging his contributions. (Apparently they were called out for copying some of his designs, so they decided to work with him.) I just learned about this fashion icon thanks to Salma’s outfit. Let’s listen to one of my favorite songs of all time, “Paid in Full” by Eric B & Rakim, whom Dan used to dress. Now that I’m listening to golden era rap I f-king love this outfit.

Emma Stone was in Louis Vuitton, whom she represents. I really liked her Oscars jacket and pants combo with the contrasting sash. This dress is a little short for my taste, I would like it to be longer with a tuxedo jacket on top, but I like the details like the leather straps, the buttons across the front and the color blocking. This is modern and fresh.

Newly single Alicia Silverstone looked amazing in hot a pink sleeveless mock neck gown. She’s got a new show coming out in June, based on the life of Kyle Richards from the RHOBH. It sounds bizarre but it might be decent.

Amy Adams was in a navy mermaid Christian Siriano gown with awesome 80s details like puff sleeves and an asymmetric neckline. I would wear this with the flimsiest of excuses, this is gorgeous. Check out her impressive hoop earrings too. Why wasn’t she at the Oscars proper? I want to see more of Amy, she’s still waiting for her g-damn Oscar.

Laura Dern continued the white theme in a Gabriela Hearst suit over a La Perla bustier. She paired it with a red clutch. QUEEN.

I like Salma’s the idea actually, just not the execution. Salma is too top heavy for tor that top, especially the bell/wide sleeves. Speaking of which has she gotten bustier? Is weight gain? She’s already had larger boobs, but they weren’t so…distracting.

I LOVE Selma’s dress, minus the stupid advertising. Her Oscar dress was atrocious. She should have worn this!!

LOVE Laura’s, so elegant but casual. Amy Adams looks pretty in navy and I like the neckline. Salma’s outfit is too long, how was she not tripping?

Salma Hayek – From Riverboat Casino Hostess to Aladdin extra.

Emma really annoyed me at the award show. Her fake woke statement is pure white feminist. However, purely shallow, this dress is cute, and it is something I’d wear.

      What was her statement?

      • Shijel says:

I believe it was something in the vein of “the nominees are four men, and Greta Gerwig”. Which is thoroughly tone deaf, because while it’s a travesty that women continue to be underrepresented in such a prestigious category, the fact is: so do people of colour (Peele). So do immigrants (del Toro, especially from a country that 45 really, really hates and constantly denigrates).

Emma Stone’s failure to name the names of Peele and Del Toro among the disenfranchised who still managed to stand the white male and claw their way to the top, and lump them in with white male directors, I feel, is unfair and ignorant.

    • Shijel says:

You mean her 4 men and only 1 woman statement?

I absolutely do agree that just because there’s once again a lack of women in the directors’ line-up, however this does absolutely not negate the importance of enominees such as Jordan Peele. That is also extremely rare, and we all know why, so Emma can go and find herself a chair and think about her statement a little, or a lot.

That said, I’ve been seeing people calling Guillermo del Toro a ‘PoC director’ alongside Peele, and I’m like… del Toro is about as white as one can get humanly get what with his pale skin, baby blue eyes and brown-greying hair. Still a Mexican immigrant (a big deal in this terrible day and age, him raking in wins), but also… lily white. It’s been a weird day.

Anyway, I also love the outfit. I covet it.

Oh no, I’m going to be mean…

Salma looks like a stubby little salmon fillet! Emma’s dress is tiny, ugly, and the colours are three shades of baby’s business! Alicia’s outfit looks cheap, and Laura’s pants and top are wrinkled and not flattering!

    *Gasp*

I feel better now. Ahem. Amy, as usual, looks great.

I love that song, especially because they sample the singing of the amazing Ofra Haza.

My take on Salma’s outfit choices: she’s married to a powerful man who could buy and sell most of these Hollywood folks. she doesn’t have to give AF. She can go full Euro older hot heiress eccentric, and I LOVE the freedom of it.

She’s also not 25 anymore and she’s realistic enough to know that no number of tasteful dresses will make her look 25. Why try to compete against the fresh, young 30 year old in a column dress when you can wear something fun and slightly wacky and still make a headline? Pretty sure Nicole Kidman has also ascribed to this philosophy, although kidman’s Oscar dress was pretty subdued.

  8. Léna says:

Wait Amy was pregnant when we last talked about her ! She gave birth without anyone noticing ?

  9. sadie77az says:

I fiercely love how Laura looks here. Yeah, wrinkles, but whatever. I love how beautifully she’s letting herself age. She looks hot without seemingly trying. The side by side comparisons of her and Nicole Kidman at the Globes were SHOCKING to me, Laura’s face aging naturally, Nicole’s totally jacked up trying to look younger. Lots of white clothing this year, but she looks great.

Laura Dern is gorgeous all around!
