Sarah Michelle Gellar on BtVS: there is one thing more powerful than evil, us

wenn33438797

Last Wednesday was International Womens Day. Famous women from various fields posted inspirational messages. Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar posted this to Twitter, which is a callback to her series Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

This past Saturday marked the 21st anniversary of the premiere of BtVS. Sarah posted a scrapbook of behind-the-scene shots with a message that applies to everyone, especially in the current culture:

The quote she used is from Bring on the Night in season 7, which I looked up, I didn’t know it off the top of my head. I have to hand it to Sarah, this is not only a great message but a great way to get it out there. I don’t know if this was intentional on Sarah’s part but there’s a parallel between BtVS and what’s going on in the country. The Scooby Squad Gang (sorry!) from BtVS were a bunch of high school students confronting and slaying ancient demons. Currently, high school students across the country, moved to action by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students, are confronting and defanging the NRA. Sarah has a good social media game in general. She promotes her Foodstirs baking company and doesn’t shy away from politics but includes some personal photos without giving up too much privacy.

If anyone needs me today…..I’ll be in bed #lazysunday

Have always loved SMG, she’s a bit of an underrated actress who should have had a better career than she did.

Didn’t she have a fling with Boreanaz? IIRC there were rumours and thats why he got written out of the show (i know for his own spin off). Angel sucked after the 1st series.

    I shipped Buffy and Spike!

    • Bridget says:

Don’t know about a fling, but he was written out for the spin off.

      • Grant says:

I liked Angel with Cordelia! They were HAWT on Angel and had a pretty sexy will-they, won’t they? thing going on for a minute there.

    • Jordan says:

I never heard of a fling (bangel forever). But I do know Joss said after David portrayed Angelus in season 2 of Buffy, that was what made him know he could carry his own show. It was in the commentary or deleted scenes of the season 2 DVD.

    Love the “resting face” LOL

  3. Grant says:

I am so ready for SMG to have a career renaissance. She is such a joyful, nostalgic reminder of my youth/adolescence. I really enjoy her as an actress and I quite liked her on that show she did with Robin Williams before his passing.

    • teacakes says:

Same, I guess it’s nostalgia (possibly the same reason why Winona Ryder remains so well-loved to this day) but seeing her just brings me back to being 13 again and spellbound by the idea of a tv show about a teenage girl’s troubles and triumphs (we didn’t get a lot of that growing up).

  4. Jordan says:

That’s the beauty of free will. We can be good or bad. The First [Evil] in season 7 drove that point across. My top favorite show ever.

  5. kimbers says:

doesn’t she have a daytime Emmy? She is an under-rated actress!

Anyone else ever YouTube those old Swans Crossing episodes to see an early SMG? that show was ridiculous, but so much fun to watch her when she was so young!!

  6. Talie says:

SMG was everything in the late 90s…I loved the show, her movies, her style. But I do respect that she seems to lead a quiet life and that she and Freddie have such a great marriage. I think a lot of her contemporaries who are more successful would take that deal.

    • teacakes says:

Yeah I was just saying below, she isn’t a pap magnet and that’s at least in part because she chooses to keep her life away from that.

  7. teacakes says:

Aaaah SMG. I’ll always love her for being Buffy (and the fact that mainstream tv awards ignored that performance so hard was my tipoff to the fact that awards shows were out of touch back then). And she was great in Cruel Intentions too.

As a fan, I still wish she’d got the breakout movie career some of her peers did, but she’s still a pop culture icon and I hope one of her later projects will find the mark. She’s too good an actress to be shunted off into just doing lifestyle stuff. And I respect how private she’s been about her marriage and kids, she could so easily have turned them into pap fodder but she’s very rarely photographed.

Small thing: it was The Scooby Gang – not squad (a word I hate, btw)!

I love SMG and I’m probably one of the few people who loved Ringer. So much drama. It will always annoy me that it was cancelled after just one season 🙁

  9. KathNitenDay says:

    LOVED The Ringer!!

  10. CharlotteCharlotte says:

Is anyone else seeing Albert Einstein in SMG’s Got Milk? advert????

I loved Buffy. Loved the movie too. I named my rats Wesley and Cordelia, oh so many years ago.
