Gabrielle Union: If you feel good, you’ll look good, ‘fashion comes from the inside out’

A few days ago, a local Florida news affiliate decided to post a story about some local Florida celebrities: Dwyane Wade and his wife, popular film and television actress, women’s rights advocate, author, businesswoman and all-around amazing human being Gabrielle Union. Only they just referred to her as “wife.” FFS:

To be fair to WSVN, they quickly realized how bad that was, and they issued a series of corrections and apologies. Gabrielle still tweeted about it:

Word. WSVN was wrong to ever write the headline/lede that way. But… I write and rewrite headlines all day and sometimes I f–k up. It happens. At least they emphatically apologized.

Meanwhile, we were sent this charming Good Housekeeping feature with SAY HER NAME Gabrielle Union, where she’s promoting her fashion line with New York & Company. Some highlights:

On her inspiration for her fashion line: “I’m super-influenced by street style and Instagram. For my New York & Company line, I gather inspiration from around the world and try to put a little practicality in there; I’m all about materials that are breathable and flattering and still allow you to eat!”

On writing her book and her journey to finding happiness: “Writing my book, We’re Going to Need More Wine, was therapeutic…whether I was talking about sexual assault, failed marriages or finding joy in being my authentic self. Acknowledging you’re in pain is the first step, and then seeking help. The online community is full of people going through the exact same thing you are.”

On surrounding yourself with only positive people: “If anyone in your life is making you feel bad…they need to be cut off. Give yourself permission to let go.”

On confidence boosters: “If your soul is singing, you’re going to look freaking amazing no matter if you’re wearing couture or a dope thrift store find. Fashion comes from the inside out.”

[From Good Housekeeping]

“Fashion comes from the inside out” – true or false? I can absolutely loathe someone’s personality and still think they look amazing, or believe that they’re beautiful on the outside. But I agree that confidence and a good personality makes clothes look better on everyone. If someone feels great and feels good in what they’re wearing, you can see that and you can immediately feel their love.

    It’s true!

She’s just gorgeous and still looks like she did in “Bring it on” but even better and that was 18 years ago!

I think if you like who you are, you’ll be more willing to put yourself out there, fashion wise. I know for me, for the longest time I wouldn’t wear bright colors, tighter fitting clothes, or anything that seemed “fashion forward” because I was afraid it would draw attention to myself. Once I started letting go of what others might think of me, and started seeing myself as the funky colorful freak I wanted to be, I dove in. So I kind of understand where she is coming from.

My son was about 16 (almost 20 years ago) when he commented one eve at dinner about how he perceives women (girls) in clothing ~ the girls who always wear black are usually the ones who don’t think they are good enough, or pretty enough, or do think something is wrong, like they think they weigh too much. He noticed a pattern in the way the girls were dressing themselves. I ;thought it sensitive and observant of him to not just notice, but to think about what it might be like for them. I also checked my wardrobe and realized I had almost NO black (some leggings, some sweat pants, and one top). I had a lot of navy, no black and no brown. Recently in choir we were asked to all wear black and I had to buy a dress…I still don’t like black much; it’s just so dark…..but I wear it more often now as a ‘colour’ than I ever used to. So even wearing black to avoid drawing attention to yourself may backfire when a sensitive, thoughtful lad like my son is looking! Once I started letting go of what others might think of me….I just got fat……LOL

What?? Not really understanding your post but please tell your son many women wear black because it’s slimming, chic and a solid color choice especially when matching with other pieces…nothing to do with wanting to “hide”! Perhaps I’m only speaking for myself but yea giving that oberservation a big nope.

I have known so many textbook stunning wallflowers who couldn’t manage to make an impression and just as many confident, vibrant women who were mediocre bordering on plain who consistently rocked the house. Gabby’s right.

Having spent the past two days watching Alexander McQueen’s fashions in the 90s and before he died in 2009 it is definitely about attitude, those designs still look modern and you don’t even have to a stick figure to wear them , a heavier women would look great in them if she carries off a IDGF which is what he was really about. It’s when your trying to look like everyone else and you fall into insecurity that you fall back to safe choices and if that works for you that’s fine too.

I’m right there…WITH Gabby!!!! When I’m on an even keel…processing emotions and thoughts smoothly…when there’s FLOW within…I feel and LOOK like a SupaModel!!! I always look that way, fashion wise…cause I’m a girl that LOVES FASHION…and being a BBW and …and being a big girl since Reagan was POTUS…I remember how HORRIBLE fashon was for me…so bad that I HAD to wear black…because the only other options were huge flowered muumuus or outfits that made me look like a 60 year old woman when I was 18…So for the last several years…I HAVE BEEN IN FASHION HEBBEN!!!!
