So why did Selena Gomez suddenly unfollow her good friend Petra Collins?

A week ago, we discussed the Star Magazine story about how Justin Theroux has likely been carrying on with photographer and It Girl Petra Collins for months. Once Star Mag put the pieces together, it honestly felt like Petra and Justin had been hiding their affair in plain sight – Petra photographed Theroux a few times, and she’s been featured in his Instagram too. Hers was the first name to crop up immediately following Justin and Jennifer Aniston’s split announcement, and maybe Petra is the “New York friend” who kept spilling some shady stuff to Page Six? Who knows. Anyway, since I’m still learning more about Petra, I was astonished to discover that she was close friends with Selena Gomez. Past tense – Selena has now unfollowed Petra.

Days after it was reported Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were taking a break from their relationship, the 25-year-old singer has just unfollowed her BBF and creative collaborator, artist Petra Collins, on Instagram. The move comes just weeks after the pair attended Coach’s fashion week show together, where they smiled and held hands together in front of the cameras.

Gomez first met Collins when she was photographed and interviewed for the September 2015 issue of Wonderland magazine. Last year, the 25-year-old photographer directed Gomez in her ‘Fetish’ music video in which the Texas-born singer sits in a kitchen surrounded by smashed plates and a puddle of rain, and her AMAs performance.

‘We were both kind of like awkward and timid in the beginning,’ Gomez opened up to Collins in a conversation for Dazed last summer. ‘People don’t know but my personal life ties into the work we do together because you know things about my life that nobody knows and I know a lot about your life that nobody knows. It comes out, somehow.’

They also spilt their beans on their sisterly relationship.

‘You make me feel more confident about the choices I make, like a sister. You help me, you encourage me and validate how I feel in that moment,’ Gomez gushed. ‘I wouldn’t have been able to grow into the artist I am right now without you. It’s like this fire-and-water, duality thing going on.’

[From Elle UK]

That’s interesting, isn’t it? Why would Selena Gomez suddenly unfollow an artist and collaborator with whom she once had a “sisterly” bond? Maybe this People Magazine article will shine a light on that: “Inside Jennifer Aniston and Selena Gomez’s Surprising Friendship: What They Have in Common.” Selena and Jennifer are friendly and they met through their managers and Jen has had Selena over to her house in Bel Air. So is that the connection? Selena is publicly Team Aniston, and NOT Team Theroux/Petra? Huh.

This girl is the most followed person on instagram how do people immediately know when someone unfollows another. Seriously is there a software or some pure intern keeping track of follows and unfollows.

    • whatever says:

She’s only following 36 people so it could be easy to figure out who she has unfollowed.

    • Ninks says:

Yes, there are apps and things that keep track of this. Also, never underestimate how crazy and obsessive stans are.

    • Esmom says:

What’s weirder to me is why would people generally bother to unfollow someone, it seems so junior high dramatic. Seems like the more mature route would be to just ignore them. Then when they kiss and make up no need to go through yet another dramatic status change.

      • Jess says:

That’s what the youngins do these days. I work in the medical field and anytime there’s drama with the younger nurses they unfollow or unfriend each other right away, it cracks me up.

      • magnoliarose says:

        @Jess

        I know. It is hilarious.
My nieces, who are sisters do it to each other when they get mad but then refollow. They watch their friends’ accounts for these announcements. My other younger relatives do it too but not to each other.

      • eto says:

to be fair, i think it takes a while for social media algorithms to figure out you don’t want a certain person’s post pushed to the forefront

  2. Nicegirl says:

So is Selena a friend of Jen, showing her loyalty with this move, or is she interested in Justin T, and mad at now former friend P? Ah, young love. Soooo confusing!! Lol.-

  3. Patricia says:

Petra is kind of scaring me. Her makeup makes her face look… severe.

  4. OriginalLala says:

As a curly girl myself, I want to slather Petra’s hair in conditioner and some Devacurl products for definition. Manage your curls girl! they are unique and deserve better than what you are currently doing!

    • MellyMel says:

Haha yes to this! Devacurl is the best!

      • Eleonor says:

I did’t know that! Thanks I’ll give it a shot, lately my curly are so messy even if I haven’t changed anything. I think probably it’ the hormon therapy I am following, I don’t know.

      • MellyMel says:

Yeah Devacurl & Mixed Chicks are my favorite brands right now. I have fine hair and neither one weigh my hair down. Hope it works for you!

      • OriginalLala says:

I’ve never tried Mixed Chicks! I also have fine curls, any product recommendations?

      • MellyMel says:

Their leave-in conditioner and deep conditioner (hair mask) are really good! I just started using those a few months back cause I wanted to try something new and so far my hair is responding well. Leaves my hair really soft and my curls are more defined and less frizzy!

      • Erinn says:

I have really fine hair with oily roots. I’ve only really started taking ‘proper’ care of my hair in the last year or so because I didn’t realize just how much wave I have when I’m letting my hair do it’s thing.

I find – for me – the devacurl no-poo stuff makes my hair get oily faster. I do really like the conditioner, and I’ve used some of their gels and like them. I’ve also dabbled with some Ouidad gel that I liked. I just have really difficult hair, ultimately, and I’m kind of lazy. What tends to work best for me is using a normal shampoo for my roots, and then using lightweight conditioners and mixing in heavier products every so often.

    • tracking says:

I kind of like the Victorian aesthetic of her hair, but I’m not down with her penchant for see-through clothes. She seems exhausting to me, with the affect, but then again so does Theroux with his hyper-self-conscious “look.” They would be well matched in that regard.

      • OriginalLala says:

I mean, it’s her hair she can do what she wants with it, but she has said she likes big curls so she brushes them out, which is just a recipe for lots of breakage and damage. You can get big curls from the right cut and products, as I’ve recently discovered when my stylist took me from hip length ringlets to shoulder length huge voluminous curls that I’m astounded by and adore

Also I think because Im a curlie, I just want all curlies to embrace and treat their curls right 🙂

      • tracking says:

Oh, I’m with you for “regular” people like us OriginalLala. I love Deva products.

      • OriginalLala says:

I’m a bit obsessed with Deva products! they made me fall in love with my curls again

    • Brickyardute says:

I have curly hair and always searching for good hair products to tame my mane. Thanks!!

    • Krissy says:

Curly girl here too, Yup! That hair is looking thirsty! She definitely needs a good leave in conditioner.

    • Jaded says:

If you’re on a budget Dove makes a wonderful curl cream for a fraction of the price – it defines curls but leaves your hair wonderfully soft, unlike loads of other products that make my hair feel stiff and sticky.

  5. Erin says:

maybe Selena is trying to get away from the bad influences in her life, ie Justin and Petra? If they both have issues with drugs and she’s trying to get clean, that seems possible. Hasn’t she been known for having issues?

    • magnoliarose says:

Yes. She has very serious issues and it is one of the reasons her mother despises Beiber. She might be trying to get clean and healthy.

  6. tracking says:

I’m pretty sure this isn’t true. Selena unfollowed most of her Insta list sometime earlier this year, and now only follows a few dozen people. I think she unfollowed Petra along with the other huge cluster. Don’t think she has any particular dog in this fight.
EDIT: I just looked at the original Vogue article, where the writer notes she doesn’t know exactly when Petra was unfollowed.

    • tracking says:

Sorry, it’s in the original Elle U.S. article. The UK one conveniently omitted that line.

  7. Rideordiegrlz says:

Selena clearly needs an alpha woman in her life to be ride or die for. I like JA for her better than TS.

  8. Svea says:

When youth is mistaken for depth, personality and edge. Yes and beauty.

  9. kNY says:

This isn’t the chick who gave her a kidney, right?

  10. Grant says:

Petra is an “It Girl”?! She seems like quite the precipitous step down from Ms. Aniston.

    • tracking says:

She’s a downtown NYC “it girl,” a completely different animal so to speak. I don’t think she’s a wise choice for a mature middle-aged man, but that does seem to be where Theroux is right now in his life.

      • teacakes says:

True. She’s in the kind of circles where it really doesn’t matter who you slept with, she’ll still keep booking her hipster photography and modelling jobs.

  11. Darla says:

Well, a lot of women DO tend to take the side of the wife, when there is a sidepiece involved. Is that surprising?

  12. Pansy says:

One time I was super good friends with a girl, she split from her husband and told me so many bad things about her relationship. It came to pass that she was the one cheating the whole time, and she was telling me lies upon lies about the husband to justify the affair. I felt very betrayed, one of my best friends cheated and lied repeatedly—to the point of a yelling fight the one time I asked her if she was having an affair. I never got over the betrayal I felt at all her lies. Her relationship was her deal, I would’ve been very supportive if she’d been forthcoming. Maybe Selena’s been in the same situation?

  13. Southernbelle824 says:

Petra had a video story on her instagram couple days ago with a magazine with her and Justin in it talking about her being the other woman. She did a few zoom in and out moves with her camera and if I recall right she was laughing.

  14. Peggles says:

I have no idea who these people are, but I used to work with and am friends with an actor who is Tumblr famous and we agreed to unfollow each other on social media because his fans would not stop harassing me.

  15. xdanix says:

Eh, Selena recently unfollowed most everyone on instagram anyway. Having just had a quick look, there’s a few “people” she follows still, like Francia Raisa, Taylor Swift (of course), Michael B Jordan (can’t blame her there) etc, but most of what’s left is brands/ businesses and Selena fan accounts.

I don’t know what exactly made her unfollow all those people (including close friends) but I assume Petra was among the many, rather than it being because of JT. I mean, Selena may indeed not be cool with whatever is going on there, but the instagram business most likely has nothing to do with it either way.

  16. Tessa Late says:

Has anyone noticed that Selena lives for drama? There is so much going on behind the scenes with her. There are CONSTANTLY stories of her following and unfollowing various friends and aquaintences. She needs to get a grip or take another social media break.

  17. Sara says:

This Petra is quite interesting looking. Not that looks matter but wow Jen looks better at almost 50 than this girl that is what 25? Very homley looking. Poor Jen.

  18. Felicia says:

Does anyone else think that super-edgy Photo Chick has a super-edgy botox shine on her 25 year old forehead? She also looks kind of grey and unhealthy in this photo.

  19. Racer1 says:

This Petra looks like the women from my dad’s 70’s porn stash on VHS. I can see her dressed up like a roller skater, hippie hitchhiker, disco queen, bored girlfriend of a drug kingpin. Ah, the good old days.
