Sarah Jessica & Matthew Broderick release baby names: Tabitha & Marion

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick have released the names of their newborn twin girls, born Monday afternoon in Ohio. The names: Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge. Um… lovely. No, I’m not being judgy, those are very far from the worst celebrity baby names. I wonder if Marion is going to go my Mary… I wonder if Tabitha will go by Tabby. Maybe I’m warped because I grew up with an extreme cat-fancier mother, but don’t the little girls’ names sound like cat names? I can totally see my mom naming her cats Tabitha, Marion and Loretta. SJP and Broderick’s rep says that Elwell and Hodge are family names… which, yes, they would have to be. I can’t see SJP sitting with the baby name book and yelling out “Elwell! That’s the ticket!”

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick have confirmed they welcomed their twins girls, via a surrogate, on Monday.

“Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are delighted to announce the healthy arrival of their two daughters at 3:58 p.m. on June 22 in Ohio,” their rep tells Usmagazine.com in a statement.

“Marion Loretta Elwell Broderick weighed 5 lbs., 11 oz., and Tabitha Hodge Broderick weighed 6 pounds,” the statement continues. “Both Hodge and Elwell are family names on Parker’s side.”

“The babies are doing beautifully and the entire family is over the moon,” the statement concludes.

News first broke in April that the couple of 12 years were expecting twin girls with the help of a surrogate. Broderick, 47, and Parker, 44, have a son, James Wilkie, 6.

[From US Weekly]

As MSat reported yesterday, SJP and Matthew were in Ohio for the births, so my guess is that they, and the babies, are already on route to New York. SJP is probably going to spend the summer with the babies, then go to work this fall on the Sex and the City sequel. I just checked to see if SJP had any projects lined up for the summer, and it doesn’t look like she does. So at least we know all of those rumored fights about nannies were probably off the mark. I hope both SJP and Matthew stick around and really spend time with the babies. As for seeing the twin girls, I suspect SJP and Broderick will do the same thing they did with James Wilke – they’ll pose publicly for all of the paparazzi, so everyone gets a picture, and then that’s it.

I like Tabitha, although Marion and Loretta are not my style they aren’t terrible…

But why didn’t little Tabitha get 4 names like her sister? I have 4 names and my sister only has 2. She jokes that my mother ran out of names after having me.

  2. Vicki says:

I love the name Tabitha, but I just have to wonder if SJP has been sitting around watching Bewitched reruns.

That’s supposed to be funny ha ha.

  3. Anna says:

Yikes. I’m commending them for choosing “normal” names, but they do sound terribly old-fashioned. And not in the good sense of the word. I prefer their brother James’ name by far. Now that’s a beautiful, normal, old-fashioned name. What also strikes me is that the names don’t… match so well, as you’d expect for twins. And I agree on the cat thing with you Kaiser 🙂

  4. HEB says:

I always associate Tabitha with a cat too.

I don’t like the names either but they do sort of seem to fit in with SJP’s old school genre–the one who grew up in Ohio with a huge nose and hand me down sweaters–Marion and Tabby fit right in with that (and thats strictly SJP not Carrie Bradshaw)

  5. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Aw, lovely names. Very old fashioned but sweet.

  6. Tia C says:

She really has oddball taste! And not in a cool way, LOL!

  7. jessiee says:

My daughter’s middle name is Marian — named for a childhood babysitter of mine, a Paul Simon song, and ostensibly, her great-grandmother, Mary. Don’t be hating on “Marion.” It’s a beautiful name.
    🙂

  8. geronimo says:

They wouldn’t be my choice (I know two Tabithas and both have 4 legs) but I bet the names have family meaning for her & Matt so all good. Wish them lots of happiness.

  9. j.ann says:

I just read in the local paper that two chiefs of police will be under investigation for allegedly burglarizing the surrogate mother’s home for photos and info to sell tot he tabloids. That’s an absolute shame, really.

The first names are cute enough, if not a little old-fashioned, can defnitely have nice nicknames. It’s kind of exciting, actually.

  10. the original kate says:

i love the name marion. very “old hollywood” to me.

  11. barneslr says:

Great names! I like these. No Moxie Crimefighter, Apple, Atlas or other weirdo idiot names here. Tabitha is cute and Marion is just a nice old fashioned name.

Why did they pick the masculine spelling for Marion, though, I wonder? males are usually Marion (as in John Wayne’s real name, Marion Morrison) and females are generally Marian. I wonder if the article got the spelling correct.

  12. Allie says:

I want to know what the heck is going on with Matthew? Those mutton chop side burns, bow ties,….he looks like the character he played in “Road to Wellsville” and that’s not a GOOD thing!
he used to be so cute, but he’s looking like a real character now.

  13. Tazina says:

I thought for females it was “Marian?” Not very good names anyway, in fact they’re awful….my friend’s tabby cat is named “Tabitha” and Marion is an old-fashioned name and not a very nice one at that.

  14. Cherie says:

Come on folks !! These names are NOT good. SJP and MB are modern/today people. I think they could have blessed these beautiful little girls with cute/sweet names like Amanda (Mandy) and Emily (Em).

  15. Neva says:

barneslr, here in Germany “Marion” is the correct female spelling. I heard it’s the same in France. However, it’s not a very common name for children over here, as it’s regarded as a bit old-fashioned. I like both names, though – they actually sound like names and not like objects or some kind of a space superhero.
