Will Chris Brown make a career comeback?

pleasure p 080609
The case is closed on Chris Brown’s assault charge against former girlfriend Rihanna. The R&B singer walked away with five years’ probation and zero jail time after a last-minute plea agreement. Legal experts think Brown, who had previously rejected such agreements, folded on the last day of his trial because he was afraid of the fallout that might come if Rihanna had testified about the incident that left her bruised and bloodied. Whether justice was truly served or not remains to be seen – it all depends on whether or not Chris will be able to keep his hands to himself from now own. But does anyone think Chris Brown’s upcoming CD release will do well?

Chris Brown won’t go to jail for assaulting Rihanna. The question now is whether his plea-bargained penalty – community labor, probation, domestic violence classes – will reform his behavior and save his career.

PEOPLE readers overwhelmingly said justice wasn’t served Monday when Brown reached a deal with prosecutors in exchange for pleading guilty to felony assault. But some experts take a more forgiving view, saying the R&B star is already off to a good start.

“In accepting a plea bargain, you’re accepting responsibility for your behavior,” says New York City clinical psychologist Jeffery Gardere. And by taking the court-mandated classes, Brown will be forced to face the issues that led him to become violent in the first place. (Brown has said that as a child, he witnessed his mother being abused.) “Part of those classes is talking about what happened as well as learning what your actions can do to victims and to yourself,” he says.

Anger Management
While it remains to be seen how the singer handles his anger, living in the public eye may serve as an extra deterrent. “He’s going to have a lot of people looking at him and hopefully that will keep him from using violence again,” says Dr. Lenore Walker, professor of psychology at NOVA Southeastern University and author of The Battered Woman Syndrome.

What may be harder for Brown – once known as a good boy – is rehabbing his image.

Brown hasn’t released any new music yet. “There are no ‘new’ songs from Chris Brown currently being promoted by Chris or his record label,” according to a statement from his label (although several old demos have apparently surfaced).

But the star has been in the studio recording tracks for his next album, which many hope will include a redemption song. “A song with the proper lyrics and melody can heal wounds,” explains former record label executive Charlie Walk, president and CEO of CWE Media, a multimedia entertainment company. “If he apologizes through song, that may be enough to take him where he needs to go.”

Healing With Music
Even if he doesn’t release a personal song, Brown needs a tune that at least tops the charts, says branding expert Marvet Britto. “Hit records allow people to move past very difficult points in their lives.”

Though music fans may be forgiving, it’s safe to say many players in the corporate world will not be eager to sign a felon to million dollar endorsements deals. (In the past, Brown has had deals with Doublemint gum and the “Got Milk?” campaign.)

“He is going to have serious problems,” says an entertainment lawyer who works with celebrities. “He beat up this beautiful young woman that everyone loves, and now no one wants to touch him.” Adds Britto, “There are parents out there who are concerned.”

Still, recording executive Walk believes there is hope for Brown’s future: “Stars all make mistakes,” he says. “If you are truly a star, you are timeless.”

[From People]

Sadly, I think Chris Brown will still be a hitmaker. And don’t expect any kind of apology, either. He may have plead guilty, but he doesn’t think he did anything wrong. While the people in this article seem to think that no one in the industry will touch Brown, the unwillingness by many of his friends and peers to condemn his actions suggest that there are still a lot of people who are on his side and look at this incident as no big deal. There are many fans who, although there is zero evidence to support this theory, insist that Brown’s beating of Rihanna was defensive in nature and that she was “asking for it.” This is probably due to comments made by Brown sympathizers such as Diddy. No – I think the next Chris Brown single will top the charts, he’ll keep making money, and hasn’t learned a single thing from this entire ordeal. Except that next time he hits a woman, he’ll make sure to strike her where nobody can see the bruises.

I really don’t know about this. Everyone in the normal public world hates him right now, but there are certainly a lot of celebrities who’ve done the same (or worse) and been quickly forgiven. And then their crime is forgotten. Chris Brown certainly wouldn’t be the first felon in the music industry, let alone celebrity in general. And it’s totally true that within his own community, there appears to have been no disapproval, which is sad and disgusting.

  2. Aspen says:

I would wish that the answer is no.

Unfortunately, this kind of sensationalism sells. In a society where moral responsibility has less than zero value–where it earns the contempt of a populace–no crime is big enough to hurt someone’s celebrity.

I have no doubt he’ll sell more of his next single than any he’s released previously. It’s sad.

A lot of people constantly rag on the rap and hip hop industry because it has a history of being littered with violent, criminal people who are then marketed to young Americans as “artists.” They make serious bank off of that mystique. The rap artists who used the medium as a method of leaving their violent pasts behind get lost in the shuffle because of all the lyrics about slapping bitches and ho’s around. Chris Brown got caught ACTUALLY beating his “bitch,” and so I suppose…in a way…it will lend more credibility to his “music.”

I find that part of all this the most tragic of all.

  3. Persistent Cat says:

I don’t think he’ll “comeback.” The way things are today with blogs and the media everywhere, he’ll never leave his past behind him. Some blogs I visit always post the beat up picture of Rihanna whenever they mention Chris Brown. That picture will follow him forever.

  4. Lem says:

Let’s make a list of famous abusers who do just fine. I’ll start

    1. Joan Crawford – mommy dearest (and that was kids)
    2. Sean Penn (tied Madge to a chair for 3 days)
    3. Ryan and Farrah – (first it was all he gave her a black eye- now it’s all ahh)
    4) Liza Minelli? (beat her husband and raped her driver)

care to add to the list?

  5. princess pee says:

Ooh, I’ll play that game, Lem.

    5) Josh Brolin (beat his wife, she dropped charges)
    6) Wesley Snipes (Halle Berry lost hearing in one ear from his abuse)
    7) Sean Connery (defends hitting a woman in an interview with Barbara Walters)

You know there’s more that we just haven’t heard about, too.

  6. wtf??? says:

He will be fine..infact he will be bigger and better..this is hollywood and people have done worse..he is not the first or will be the last so move on..again, who are to judge that he is not sorry..has he told you??? part of me blames the media including you celebitchy on they way you guys handled this..the way you went on and on only made a lot more people feel for him..he is not the first to have made a mistake but the way you bashed him seemed like it…its not because what he did was right but because of how he was treated that some support him.. look at all the surveys that were taken..you keep blaming his peers but, rihanna herself was begging the judge not to put the stay away order in place..she has played a major role in chris being forgiven so stop puttin others on blast and say things as they are..

  7. wow says:

Everyone in the normal world does NOT hate him. Nor was there silence or approval from everyone in the R&B/Hip Hop community of his hitting Rhianna.

He’ll come back and do fine because if people like the music, they like the music and will buy. Plus the fact that she still hung out with him afterwards just sort of negates any sympathy some might have had for her as well.

Chris will do his probation and service announcement stuff and then move on. Much inthe same way Nicole Ritchie could have killed someone by driving down the wrong side of a freeway and is “beloved” as an “adoring Mom” now. Or how Paris got away with her crap and the list goes on and on.

People will move on to the next scandal because with celebrities – you know there will always be a “next scandal”.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris Brown’s next album is his biggest one.

  8. Lem says:

Good one’s princess pee(I thought David Justice used to hit Halle Berry)

    8) Mike Tyson (um duh)
    9) O.J. (o.k. it seems to have caught him but he beat Nicole for years and was still hearalded)
    10) Niomi Campell (will beat just about any B*tch)
    11) Tawny Kitaen (beat her husband)

  9. Zoe (The Other One) says:

    R Kelly. R Kelly. R Kelly.

  10. lala says:

robert downey jr. he was in jail for drugs and other crap and look at him now

  11. Lem says:

there a front man and his wife who beat the snot out of each other and trash hotel rooms. scott something maybe? can’t remember

  12. irl says:

I hope he totally “gets it” when he goes to the domestic violence classes. With his Mom suffering abuse and his young age he just might reform. Some men actually do come to understand in those classes for abusers.

  13. nnn says:

He will come back because :

    1) people have selective or short memories;
    2) it’s hollywood;
    3) he has enough attractiveness and talent for its young market target
    4) time is his best ally. he is 19, so by the time he will be 25, he is expected to have matured from adolescence. Hell if he married and has a child, people will put his mistake totally in the growing pains basket and it won’t weight much in his career.

Just like Drew Barrymore who was a druggie and a alcoholic at 10 and sent to therapy at 12.

Brandy has accidently killed someone, i am sure that it won’t weight on her career, the same way people forget the hit and run by Halle Berry.

  14. sunshine says:

The truth is alot of people who hate him never purchased his music anyway so it doesn’t matter what they say…Time magazine did a story about 2 months ago and they asked something like who is going to be on top from this incident…guess who…you are right…Chris Brown…why because young females are mad that she hurt their man..google this very good and interesting read…also those endorsements he lost will be nothing compared what he will get in the future.. he is a money making machine and alot of people are waiting for this storm to calm down…America is not the only country that purchase music and go to concerts and he is loved still world wide please don’ be fooled…..his future is going to be fine and Jive and other A-lister artist agree that’s why they are still willing to work with him…people should stop sleeping on the youth today…people knew she had hit him repeatly in the past and the same bloggers that hate him today hated her when the stories started flowing in on her hitting him in clubs and things…Chris Brown is going to be fine with time.

  15. MSat says:

Sunshine- please post these alleged stories about Rihanna hitting Chris Brown. Also, please post pictures of Chris Brown’s injuries from those beatings. Poor guy! (eyeroll)

  16. Iggles says:

    @ Lem:

It was Scott Weiland of the Stone Temple Pilots.

I’m gonna count R. Kelly and Robert Downey Jr for # 12 and 13.

    14) The Big Pun (rapper who beat his wife for years)
    15) B.I.G. (Beat Lil Kim and other women)
    16) William Hurt (Viciously beat actress Marlee Matlin, his former girlfriend)
    17) Josh Brolin (cops called in domestic disturbance with with Diane Lane)

  17. Iggles says:

sunshine – You’re right about the young girls. However, his career now has a cement ceiling. Teenagers buy the records, but with their PARENTS money!

I just don’t see parents in surburbia happily forking over their cash for Chris Brown concert tickets. His squeaky clean image is gone, so he won’t get national endorsements.

His best bet is to become a rapper. Or to collaborate solely on ran albums. But his career as he knew it is over. He won’t be able to tour internationally because of his parole.
Which, by the way, he will violate. It’s only a matter time. He’s a arrogant punk who thinks his **** don’t stink. His next ‘indiscretion’ will land him jail time.

  18. surely would says:

Tommy Lee. Tommy Lee. Went to JAIL for hitting Pamela Anderson and their son. Still has a career, and no one even seems to remember it happened. Of course Chris Brown will still have a career. Tommy Lee made a comeback, why can’t Brown?

  19. nasty says:

god he is gross. Even before he turned out to be a woman beater I thought “his face is so busted, but at least his teeth would make a good bottle opener for all the beer youd have to drink in order to….”. Dear God can you imagine being so pathetic that you are an actual fan of his? Has anyone else read comments by women saying how they love him and he’s sexy? Where the fuck are they from? There should be some kind of community outreach program where chris brown fans are hooked up with men in burn units. If THAT face is sexy to them, whats a little third degree burn? Someone should get on that. It’ll change this whole situation into something positive.

  20. MSat says:

When was the last time R. Kelly had a hit, though? He may not be completely shut out of the industry, but he’s nowhere near the top of his game anymore. Wasn’t he kicked off the tour with Usher a few years ago because he was acting like a tool?

And Chris Brown’s music has always been crappy overproduced Michael Jackson ripoffs anyway.

  21. emily says:

Totally agree. I hate Chris Brown, dont think he’s sexy or either hot and i simply detest his musics. And i’m a woman, so that’s ok for you guys!? This boy is so full of himself that he even forgot that his mother was beated several times when he was a kid. I was just thinking right now how he got the nerve to go on Tyra Banks Show to tell this story?!
So pathetic… seems that his mom didn’t teach anything to him!!!!

  22. Wench. says:

Sean Penn did WHAT? Man, I didn’t know that.

On a side note – Roman Polanski. Success despite screwing a child.

  23. Magsy says:

Can’t we wait until he does his time first and picks up some litter off the road before we start thinking comeback.

  24. Toya says:

He will be fine because he still have a lot of fans like myself. I feel like everyone should get a twice chance.Oh BET can kiss you ass that’s why the show was weak anyways.

  25. Rebecca says:

This was taken from a article that I remember reading, if you don’t believe that abuse goes both ways, man hits woman, woman hits man. We will never know what happen between the two of them that night but in her statement she did say she pushed Chris Brown head up against the drivers window why he was driving, read it for yourself… Chris will made a comeback, as moost have stated he has not did any much as some of hollywoods elites

RIHANNA ATTACKED HER BROTHER WITH A GLASS BOTTLER+B sensation RIHANNA knows how to look after herself – she once smacked her brother in the face with a glass bottle. The Umbrella hitmaker, who was schooled at Barbados’ famous Cadet Corps, admits she was a terrible sister to her two younger brothers when she was growing up. She tells Complex magazine, “We talk all the time now, but we used to fight – and when I say fight, I don’t mean arguments; I mean physically fight. “I hit the older one (brother) in the face with a glass bottle… My mom was pretty upset.”

  28. Musicfan says:

No. If his comeback would happened, than “Graffiti” wouldNT have FLOPPED so hard! You guys are using wrong people.

Brandy didn’t intentionally hurt anyone, and she dealt with the issues that happened.

Wesley Snipes? When has he had a career? the 90’s? How MANY people know about his abuse of Berry? Not many. She has talked about her hearing loss, and a guy beat her up and did it. Yet please let me know WHEN she spoke Snipes did it? She always/refuses to say.

Sean Penn, Charlie Sheen are the exceptions not the rule. T.I just went to jail again for a parole violation and he got nearly a year. He is a BIGGER star than Brown, yet why did CB get no jail? R.Kelly hasnt had a hit album since 07.

  29. Muffy says:

Why did Brown get no time? Because it was his first offense, and Rihanna didn’t want him to do any time! She didn’t even want the restraining order!
