The Rock: Frances McDormand was sweet to my daughter at the Globes

Dwayne Johnson is making the promotional rounds for his new movie Rampage. I doubt I’ll see it but it looks right up his alley as an action flick. Earlier this week, DJ stopped by The Ellen Show and confessed to having a crush on Frances McDormand. Such a crush that he “privately” told Frances on the air that they were going to marry. But I have to say, after he explained the reason why, I don’t blame him.

As we’ve discussed, DJ’s oldest daughter, Simone, was the Golden Globes Ambassador this year. Frances won for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. After she took the stage, she turned and shook everyone’s hand upstage from her, including Simone. DJ pointed out Frances was the only one to do that. After her speech, as Simone escorted her off the stage, Frances took Simone’s hand and kissed it. DJ went into the Globes already loving Frances but came out knowing she was the one. The Frances story is at the 3:05 mark:

Thank you to Buzzfeed for the story – it’s a very sweet one. I remember seeing the handshake. I didn’t note that Frances was the only one to do it and I guess when I saw her kiss Simone’s hand at the end, I assumed they knew each other. Now that I know they didn’t, I 1) kind of have a little crush on Frances myself and 2) would love to see ‘acknowledging the award holders’ become a thing. They’re mostly ignored unless the award winner starts wandering in the wrong direction.

The story is so sweet that I’m willing to overlook DJ saying, “between you and I.” (That’s a lie, that faux-pas has played on loop in my head since I heard it.) But might I suggest that it wasn’t the best time to propose to the already-married Frances after mentioning that his pregnant girlfriend, Lauren, was only three weeks away from delivering his third daughter? I don’t think Lauren is too worried about Frances, though. She’s probably more preoccupied with Rampage promotion having DJ in Shanghai and London right before she’s due.

Note by CB: We saw Dwayne’s interview about saving his mom from suicide and suffering depression when his football career ended. The Express ran that and it sounds suspiciously similar, but worded slightly differently, to his Oprah Masterclass interview in 2015. I don’t think it was a new interview as outlets reported. (The Express did not claim it was, but they didn’t attribute the quotes either.) Like the class act he is, Dwayne thanked fans for their support afterwards.

I remember that clearly! It actually caught my attention for that very reason (that she was the only one to do it).

It’s lovely to be thankful for small gestures that actually mean so much, but it’s also sad that such a simple thing is so noteworthy. More kindness, always.
