Jeffrey Dean Morgan: ‘I delivered’ both of my children with Hilarie Burton

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is in The Rock’s new movie, Rampage, which looks ridiculous but awesome. It’s out this weekend and Jeffrey plays some kind of mad scientist responsible for making the creatures get super big and angry so they can attack a city and wreck havoc. It’s by the director of San Andreas, which I saw and enjoyed I’m not going to lie. I would watch this one in theaters.

If you would have told me back when Jeffrey married Hilarie Burton they would still be together four years later with two kids I wouldn’t believe you, but I think he’s different than his public persona. He seems supportive of Hilarie and like a good dad and husband. Anyway Jeffrey told Howard Stern that he personally delivered both his children with Hilarie. They have son Augustus, 8, and daughter George Virginia, who was born just about a month ago. The first delivery was a surprise to Jeffrey but he was ready for the second one.

During a recent interview with Howard Stern… [Jeffrey Dean Morgan said] that he delivered both of his youngsters.

“I delivered the children,” he told the radio host. “We went to a hospital to do it in case something were to go awry.”

Fortunately, very little went awry—well, except for his son’s initial head shape. “I had no idea. I thought I was just there to lend support, hold a leg and then we had a midwife and as soon as the baby started crowning, they kind just pushed me in there. The first one, Gus, I kind of waited too long to pull him out and he came out and his head was shaped like a cone. He got stuck in that no man’s land a little bit too long.”

However, he learned his lesson by the time George came around. “I was ready and as soon as she crowned, I grabbed her a little by the cheeks and pulled her out,” he described. “Perfect.”

While he’s gotten some practice, it seems Morgan’s delivery days are over and he’s planning on getting a vasectomy. “We’re tapping out,” he quipped. “I’m 52…Two is perfect—a boy and a girl. We tried for, since Gus was born, to have another and hit a rough go trying to…lost a couple. It was an emotional ride. So, now we have our little girl. We’re done.”

[From E! Online]

I didn’t know that was even a thing now, that dads could personally deliver their babies. When I had my son ages ago my husband was there and supportive but the midwife delivered the baby. It’s kind of scary to think of a non-professional doing it, but I guess they’re there to step in if there are any problems. I don’t remember hearing that Hilarie suffered miscarriages and that must have been awful. Like Jeffrey, I have a friend’s whose husband had a vasectomy after she had a couple of miscarriages. He felt like it was the least he could do so that she would never have to go through that again.

Jeffrey also talked about the fact that they gave their daughter a traditional boy’s name, George. He said he calls her Georgie and that “We threw in a middle name that was much more feminine.” I wonder if George will have an advantage with a male name. Will businesses and prospective employers just assume she’s male? Maybe in the future they’ll know so much more about us that it won’t matter as much.

Well, he gets right in there and you can’t say he wasn’t involved. This is a real man.

    • AndreaN says:

Men don’t deliver babies. Mothers do. Men (and other women) can assist a mother in delivering her baby.

      • Sparkly says:

As a doula, I’m pretty niggly about the phrasing too, AndreaN. I always say my husband caught our youngest daughter. I delivered her.

(Ours was just the two of us since the midwife didn’t make it in time. It was amazing, and I love that we did it together like that.)

      • MamaHoneyBadger says:

THANK YOU. Came here to say that, leaving satisfied.

      • Marigold says:

Thank you. He was certainly more involved than most but that baby crowned because of Hilarie and those shoulders didn’t go anywhere without a lot of work by her. In this case, I’m only a little bothered but I HATE when the local news has a story about a roadside delivery and says a fireman or emt delivered a baby. Nah, son. In that instance moreso than others, it was all the Mom.

      • minx says:

My first reaction too—You didn’t deliver anything, buddy,

    • JA says:

Oh God, now only “real men” deliver their own children?! Jesus the “real men” label gets old real quick but ok let’s tell all men if you’re not reaching in there and grabbing your own baby you’re not a “real man”. My eyes are rolling…

  2. Citresse says:

I believe that is a very loving gesture and a wonderful way to bond with a newborn.

  3. Ingrid Fletched says:

I think she delivered them..not him.

    • AndreaN says:

      Exacto.

    • Jane says:

I think it’s common parlance. Like, the mom “gives birth” to the baby while the doctor/midwife/Jeffrey Morgan “delivers” them.

    • V4Real says:

Look we all know that mother’s deliver babies. It’s like saying we won when it comes to your favorite sports team. We didnit win anything, because we didn’t play.

But I’m just happy for the couple. Hilarie shared that she had several miscarriages before this blessing was born. Congrats to them.

  4. KBeth says:

Wish he’d shave the beard, still sexy though.
    His voice *sigh*

    • minx says:

I was hoping the beard was for a role….? Because, ugh. It’s a David Letterman old man beard.

  5. LAK says:

Yes, but what about Sam and Dean!!

  6. Kealeen says:

Taylor Swift’s parents allegedly gave her a gender-neutral first name so prospective employers wouldn’t pre-emptively judge based on her gender. Ironic, considering she turned out to be Judgy Snake Judgerson.

  7. Lexilla says:

When I delivered, the doctor put my hands on the baby and let me pull her out and bring her to my chest. It was the greatest experience. I hear this is more of a trend now, letting parents be part of it, as long as the delivery is going smoothly up to that point.

    • GreenBunny says:

My doctor did the same exact thing with my last. I had told her we were done after this, so she was like “let’s have some fun” and had me help “deliver”. Then they laid him skin to skin on me for an hour until they took him for anything. It was pretty awesome. And he was born on my birthday, so it was pretty much the best birthday present ever!

      • ChillyWilly says:

Aw, GreenBunny, that’s really cool! I always feel bad for the babies being whisked away from their mom to be cleaned and weighed. It doesn’t seem natural.

    • Bryan says:

I’d say you were a pretty big part of it already, without having to reach down there and pull it out with your own hands (which I didn’t even know was a very practical thing to do, given the pain as well as body positioning. But then again I’m a childless single guy and honestly have no experience or expertise whatsoever in childbirth anyway…)

  8. Froggy says:

Jdm and The Rock together warrants a theater trip from me.

  9. Nev says:

    He. Be. Sexy.

  10. launicaangelina says:

Hilarie shared about their losses on Instagram a month ago. I can’t imagine the heartache.

  11. Sparkly says:

I’ve never seen his wife before. Or the kiddo. He has a nice family! Sounds like a good dad. That makes me like him even more.

    • Lyka says:

The wife – Hilarie Burton – is an actress/TV presenter (I remember her from TRL ages ago). But she received a bit more prominence recently when she shared her #MeToo story about a terrible groping incident with Ben Affleck years ago. It’s all caught on tape, and I really respect her for speaking out about it, so I kinda have a fondness for this couple.

      • Kata says:

She was in One Tree Hill, which was huge with my generation ( mid 20s). To me she’s more famous than he is.

  12. LilLil says:

When will a boy get a girl name? Where is the boy named Jennifer?

    • Maum says:

They never do, do they? At most they get gender neutral names.
I don’t mind George for a girl but as a nickname.
I went to a posh school full of Georginas and Claudias and they were all Georges and Claudes- point is they had girl names.

I’m a bit old fashioned. Either go neutral or sex appropriate. Then nickname away. 😉

      • MissM says:

Lindsey is one of my favorite names for a boy, it’s one of the few completely gender neutral names out there but I would be worried giving it to my son since kids can be bullies. I like Ashley too which was originally a boys name but that one is guaranteed to get some teasing.

  13. queenE says:

    my brother ‘caught’ his kids.

  14. H says:

JDM has an older son with a former gf, why does he never mention that child when he talks about his kids?

  15. Kathleen says:

Her post about the miscarriages and infertility broke my heart. Infertility is one of those last barriers that the feminist discourse just hasn’t really broken through on yet. It’s so hard to explain unless you’ve personally lived it but it’s such an isolating, horrible and lonely feeling. I’ve been going through infertility for YEARS. I’ve done IVF. I’ve lost babies that I had prayed so hard for. When you have lived this, you see so clearly how much both the pro-life discourse AND the pro-choice community have failed women who are dealing with this struggle. We become invisible in the conversations about reproductive rights. We are invisible in the conversations among women who don’t want children and are seeking their place. We are invisible among mothers and the entire motherhood journey even though a lot of us HAVE children who didn’t survive. My prayers and joy to her because if she survived 5 years of infertility…she deserves the world. It’s not easy. The depression and anxiety associated with prolonged infertility and recurrent miscarriage is very real. If you survive it, you are lucky.

  16. Als Em says:

Our midwives didn’t arrive in time with our home birth and my husband delivered our son in the hallway. It happened so quickly that we didn’t have any chance or time to panick. The midwives has called the ambulance and they arrived a few minutes later and was surprised that it was our first. They just hung around until the midwives came 25 mins. All they had to do was cut the cord and help me deliver the placenta.

  17. Ladykeller says:

So, about that beard. I used to think he was hot, not so much anymore.

  18. ValiantlyVarnished says:

She talked about her problems with fertility and miscarriages in her Instagram right after George was born. I don’t know much about her but that mlst made me a fan. It was so open and honest. And her caring about posting pics of her baby knowing other women are struggling with fertility and not wanting to upset anyone says a lot about her. Him, I am on the fence about as he has said some things in the past that don’t sit well with me. But he is a decent actor and nice to look at. Minus the beard

    • Kitten says:

That post was so heart-felt, sorrowful, and yet hopeful at the same time.
I frequently think of friends who are struggling with fertility when I see other friends posting images of sonograms and happy babies on social media. I can only imagine how painful it must be for them.

I really like her a lot (always have since One Tree Hill) so I hope the rumors that he cheats on her aren’t true. She deserves the best IMO.

  19. reg says:

He cheats on her like crazy with anything in a skirt, like Helle Berry, last year there was news release that the two have seperated , then it vanished, I guess she’s holding that child support card over his head…

    • SM says:

Really? Because I just came here to say that to me he gives such a wird almost douchebag vibes and I am not sure why…

  20. Penfold says:

I dont like the name George for a girl. They may think is cute- and as a nickname it’s okay- but she’s the one who will be saddled with it for life.

He’s looking nice and healthy in these photos. Much better than gaunt looking Negan on Walking Dead. I hate him on that show. But that’s b/c the character, not him personally.

  21. Comment from the olds — I read all of the Nancy Drew mysteries as a kid and she had two lady sidekicks…Beth and George. I always wanted to be a girl named George.

  22. GoatYoddler says:

My husband caught all three of our children. It’s such an amazing thing to be in labor, working so hard, and to have your partner down there front and center helping. To be able to have eye contact with each push and trust in him in such a vulnerable state – it’s really intense! And it’s something he is very proud of too. It was the right choice for us, but definitely not everyone’s cup of tea.

  23. leidub311 says:

I had my first in the hospital, but my husband caught our other two children, with the midwife supervising. Best days ever!!!

  24. HeyThere! says:

My husband was up at my face helping me and me squeezing both his hands/arms. I wouldn’t have wanted him down there when I needed him up there with my face. Different stokes, different folks.

  25. Veronica S. says:

Ugh, the character he plays in TWC completely ruins the sex appeal for me. He’s just too effective in the role. Sorry Jeff. 😐

It is somewhat charming that he wanted to be that involved, though. Not everybody has the stomach for that sort of thing, but I would think it’s nice to have somebody you trust intimately on the other end of that. Admittedly, I also like hearing somebody talk so casually about miscarriages. I get that it can be heartbreaking and frustrating and dramatic, but sometimes it’s just….reality. It sucks, but it happens. It’s nice to hear it in a narrative that makes it clear that it was sad but not the end of the world for them.

  26. IMUCU says:

I read somewhere why they chose the name George, but I forget the reason…so I just keep thinking it’s a nod to George Washington, since the middle name is Virginia :-p.

    • Penfold says:

I thought he said it was after an old Bonanza episode titled, ‘A Girl Named George.’

I think I read that, but maybe I am mistaken.

  27. Anastasia says:

I need to look up who this guy is!
