TJ Miller was arrested after calling in a fake bomb threat while drunk on a train

T.J. Miller takes his wife out to lunch in Beverly Hills

The word that gets repeated the most in our coverage of TJ Miller is “douchebag.” TJ Miller is, without question, a massive douchebag. Here’s my question: if he wasn’t a white guy working in the performing arts, would we be calling him something else? Would we be calling him a thug, a degenerate, a f–king mess of a human being? TJ Miller douchebagged his way out of his job on Silicon Valley, and we later learned that he committed about a million fireable offenses before he was eventually allowed to leave on his own terms (imagine if a woman had behaved that way). We also learned that TJ Miller is – allegedly – a violent psycho who possibly raped and brutally assaulted a classmate during his college days. And now surprise, TJ Miller was arrested for calling in a fake bomb threat on Amtrak after he behaved like a psycho douchebag towards a female passenger. The story is just as disturbing as you would think. So if TJ Miller wasn’t so bathed in white male privilege, would we be calling him what he is: a f–king terrorist?

Ex-“Silicon Valley” star TJ Miller caused hours of Amtrak delays when he drunkenly called in a fake bomb threat after a female passenger snubbed his advances, federal authorities said as they announced his arrest Tuesday. Miller was nabbed Monday night at LaGuardia Airport in connection to the March 18 incident after arriving on a flight from Canada – where he performed a comedy show from Thursday through Sunday, law enforcement sources said. The 36-year-old comedian and actor was charged with intentionally conveying to law enforcement false information about an explosive device on a train traveling to Connecticut and faces a maximum five years in jail, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut announced.

After briefly appearing before a judge at a New Haven federal courthouse Tuesday morning, Miller — a Denver native living in New York – was released after posting a $100,000 bond.

The real-life drama played out when Miller allegedly called a 911 dispatcher in New Jersey and said he was on an Amtrak train traveling from Washington DC toward Penn Station and that a female passenger “has a bomb in her bag,” according to the complaint. Train No. 2256, which Miller said he was on, was then stopped in Connecticut at the Green’s Farms Station in Westport where passengers were ordered to disembark so bomb squad members could search the train. No evidence of any explosive device was detected, the complaint states.

As for what actually happened, the story is very complicated. Basically, Miller claimed to be on Train 2256, but he was actually on Train 2258, in the first class car, where he was getting absolutely hammered and then screaming at a woman who gave him a dirty look. He then decided to drunkenly call 911 and claim that there was a woman with a bomb in her purse on the train.

The attendant said that Miller “appeared intoxicated” upon boarding the train in Washington and that while on the train guzzled down two glasses of wine and two “double scotch and soda” drinks. Miller, the attendant said, had “exchanged profanity with a female” sitting in a different row from him in the first class car, the complaint says. When an Amtrak police officer contacted Miller by phone as law enforcement first responded to Train No. 2256 – the wrong train Miller was on — he said he had gotten off the train in New York and said a woman with red hair and a red scarf kept checking her bag without taking anything out. In his 911 call, he said the woman had brown hair. The officer noticed slurring in Miller’s voice and asked him if he had consumed alcohol that day to which he replied that he consumed “one glass of red wine.”

When asked if he suffered from mental illness, Miller replied: “No, absolutely not. This is the first time I’ve ever made a call like this before. I am worried for everyone on that train. Someone has to check that lady out,” according to the complaint.

Investigators later determined that Miller and the unidentified woman were involved in a beef on the train. The woman told officers that Miller was warned more than once by the train attendant for speaking on the phone too loudly and while he was on his phone, the woman looked at him and he said, “Hey, why are you looking at me?” the complaint says. Before Miller called 911, he and the woman had a “screaming match” on the train, an attendant said.

The woman – who officers said smelled of alcohol – denied having a loud argument with Miller, “but reported that at some point he directed a comment to her about her hair; the comment was unwelcome, and she turned to look at Miller in a non-friendly manner,” the complaint says. Miller then barked at her, saying “What are you lookin’ at?” the complaint states. The woman described Miller’s behavior during the train trip as “loud and belligerent.”

According to the complaint, Miller and the woman engaged in a “hostile encounter.” It was was “apparently initiated by Miller, which by [the woman’s] recollection amounted to her rebuffing his social overture and his responding negatively; and that Miller already had been manifesting a belligerent behavior pattern throughout the trip.” Miller, according to officials, was “motivated by a grudge against the subject female, called 911 to relay false information about a suspected bomb on the train, and continued to convey false information to investigators while the public safety response was ongoing.”

While this doesn’t seem like the crux of the story, Miller was attempting to “punish” this particular female passenger specifically, correct? This woman on the train is the one he was describing to 911, right? In his f–ked up head, he thought he was pulling a fast one – he thought “I’ll show this bitch, I’ll make it so she’s detained for hours as a terrorist, all because she had the nerve to not find me adorable and charming.” Toxic masculinity. Terrorism. I hope he’s sent to jail for a very long time.

Well on the bright side he didn’t do anything crazy in Canada at least!

    • Mia4s says:

True! I’m more interested in the fact that depending on what he’s convicted of he’s very unlikely to get back into Canada. Bye bye Deadpool 3! Good.

What an awful person. There’s no need for him, Hollywood. There are thirtysomething actors of every shape, size, and ethnicity who can take his place. Don’t be trash-enablers…anymore.

  2. Leviathan says:

    RICH, white, male privilege.

    Fixed it.

Don’t lump us working stiffs in with this asshole

    • Nicole says:

Nah they had it right the first time. It’s not only rich white men steeped in privilege

      • Jay says:

Thank you Nicole. I hate when white people try to distance themselves from other white people based on class. Yeah, except being rich or poor never prevented white folks from harming Black and Brown bodies; you don’t get to distance yourself from toxic white privilege on the basis of class. Or Sex for that matter. While women have historically always aligned with whiteness over femininity, and as recently as the 2016 election. Nah. Not here for the distancing.

      • Nicole says:

Right. Like we dont see working class white people with advantages over minorities all day. In terms of work, police response, protection, policy…lets not kid ourselves to the reality

      • Shappalled says:

Plenty of conventionally attractive women stepped in beauty privilege too. But when they act entitled we don’t say typical female privilege.

    • Torontoe says:

The fact that he is rich and famous certainly creates more privilege, but sadly, plenty of “working stiffs” think it’s ok to ‘punish’ women for refusing their advances. Society teaches men that they are owed attention from women, and that when they don’t get it, the woman is at fault and deserves all forms of mistreatment from insults, to violence, to apparently false bomb threats.

      • whatWHAT? says:

GOD, the entitlement so many men feel about getting attention from a woman is just too much.

from the get go, when I read this story yesterday, my FIRST thought was “oh, he hit on her and she told him to F off”.

  3. Lucy2 says:

    Well, he’s a delight, isn’t he?
I hope they throw the book at him, this is very, very serious and should not be brushed aside.

    • CTwinter says:

I’m sitting back with some popcorn and watching this no talent ass clown destroy his career.

    • Belle Epoch says:

LOCK HIM UP. Seriously. Not community service, not anger control, just JAIL. He sounds like he never got the concept of “consequences” because – rich white male. Imagine if he’d been Pakistani.

      • Lyka says:

I mean, he’s an ass and this is a grievous offense, so he needs to be held accountable. But the language and sincerity with which people are discussing his punishment – including automatic jail time – just does not square with ANY conceptions of minimizing the prison industrial complex in this country. If we want to reduce jailed bodies, shouting JAIL at every offense is counterproductive.

And as a Pakistani, when a white man gets severe prison time for something like this, I can count on MY sentence being even more inhumane (not that I’d literally ever willingly do something so asinine).

    • Raina says:

Book? Hope they throw a library at him.

  4. Zapp Brannigan says:

So in the 911 call he said she had dark hair, a scarf and a bomb, anyone else see what he was implying with that description. What kind of sentence can he expect for this, I hope his being adjacent to celebrity doesn’t make it a lighter sentence.

    • RBC says:

That is the first thing that jumped out at me when I read the story. That was sickening. He will probably have his lawyer put out a statement that his client has a” substance abuse problem”and is headed into rehab. He will get off with a fine and most likely community service.

      • Ginger says:

This case is in federal court, he’s not getting community service. Also, they diverted the train up to Connecticut to an area that’s not even on the Amtrak path. So we’re talking major expense! IMHO he’s going to jail.

    • imqrious2 says:

Wouldn’t that also be a hate crime, in that he’s labeling someone by racial profiling?

  5. Little Darling says:

TJ Miller seems like a guy who you think would be cool to hang out with but he’d end up peeing in your Cheerios.

  6. grabbyhands says:

    According to the complaint, Miller and the woman engaged in a “hostile encounter.” It was was “apparently initiated by Miller, which by [the woman’s] recollection amounted to her rebuffing his social overture and his responding negatively;

There’s that story in a nutshell right there. He is the douchebag poster boy for this type of guy.

The really gross thing is that from here on out we’re going to be subjected to a bunch of think pieces about how the poor guy is on a downward spiral, and we should stop being mean because the poor guy is just so troubled and then he’ll do something mildly nice and then he’ll go on a giant redemption tour and be welcomed back with open arms in a way that a woman or a POC never would.

  7. Natalie S says:

That’s such an unsettling, dark thing to do. How did his brain even go there, to think of reporting someone as a terrorist? I know he already has accusations, but there’s much more there. That’s a high comfort level with abusive behavior.

  8. Lizzie says:

so….a man who said a woman who accused him of rape “made it up” was quick to make up a racist, sexist story and call 911 and report a potential terrorist and bring down the entire amtrak system for hours. i wish i were surprised.

since #metoo and the current GOP have i realized the most important addage in our culture is “he who smelt it dealt it.” there is no more true statement.

  9. Harryg says:

    Wow he’s stupid.

  10. HelloSunshine says:

I wonder what his wife must be thinking? He’s obviously always been awful and she’s stick with him, will she now? And is the article implying he was trying to flirt with the woman and she rejected him?

I feel awful for this poor woman and angry at all the wasted resources that went into this ugh

  11. Merritt says:

What a despicable thing to do. This man belongs in prison. He is dangerous. There are probably far more things in his past than what we know about.

  12. Sparkly says:

That is so mind-bogglingly out there. I hope this doesn’t get poo-pooed away. He deserves some serious jail time.

  13. Rachel in August says:

Oh my, and aren’t YOU an intellectual giant! Wow, still with the frat boy/high school mentality?

  14. Chisey says:

I’ve seen some places going a mental illness route with this story. If that’s true, then I’m for psychiatric treatment (and psych treatment is not necessarily incompatible with more traditional penalties like jail time etc), but I also can’t help thinking, what mental illness is general dickishness a symptom of? Because I don’t want to be callous, but the whole thing smells off to me.

    • Betsy says:

I wouldn’t doubt mental illness. Because sometimes yes, general dickishness is one of the ways it can appear to manifest (among many more severe symptoms).

  15. Malibu Stacy says:

Couldn’t have happened to a greater guy.

  16. Lozface says:

This is absolutely crazy! What an entitled a-hole.

I’ve been in the US for close to 4 weeks (from Aus) and have been horrified by the toxic masculinity I’ve encountered. The racism is next level too. We were in Dallas visiting a friend from Aus. There was a large group and my friend suggested someone drive, who was drunk. I said no way! That’s dangerous and not to mention illegal. They all laughed at me, and said it’s all about the size of our cheque books. I then said and the colour of your skin! To which the most arrogant bloke said ‘we can’t help it that we are the kings. That’s just how it is.’

I lost it. I was pretty happy to leave Dallas. The attitudes were woeful and the disrespect of women was mind blowing.

I know this was just a small pocket but when I read cases like the TJ Miller one, I just think it’s all about skin colour, not the actual crime at all.

Also, Australia isn’t perfect either – we have our own issues too!!!

  17. Betsy says:

Yes, that’s terrorism, but I reserve the word for people who mean it for the purpose of creating terror. This guy is a piece of sit, and I hope he gets charged up one side and down the next.

  18. Celeste says:

    Ahahahaha! what an unhinged loser.

  19. Izzy says:

Good luck getting back into Canada ever again. Douchecanoe.

  20. trh says:

My experience is that everybody from Denver looks and acts exactly like that guy.

  21. Pandakeeper says:

Unforgivable. And so are his gold chains. Should be punished for a long time….for the stupid, dangerous stunt AND his chains.

  22. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I can honestly see him being homeless and strung out on drugs lying in an alley somewhere.
