Chris Evans posts video of the first time he met his rescue dog Dodger

Yesterday was National Pet Day, which, as most pet owners know, is actually every day. I think National Pet Day was created so people could shamelessly post photos and brag` about their pets. And I am all here for it – I could talk about my dog, cats and grandbaby-leopard gecko all day long. If you spent any time on Twitter yesterday, you know I’m not alone. My feed was full of pets. Among them was none other than The Second Best Chris, Chris Evans. Chris adopted a rescue pup he named Dodger while filming his movie Gifted in Atlanta. Dodger has been featured prominently on Chris’ social media – and we are all the better as a society for it. For NPD, Chris took the opportunity to wipe us out emotionally by posting video of the moment he first met Dodger and realized he couldn’t live without him. Brace yourselves:

I’ve replayed this video so many times. Unfortunately, I did so just now and turned around to see The Wundermutt looking at me as if he’d caught me cheating. The fact that he and Dodger look nothing alike probably cuts the deepest.

It’s ridiculous how much I love this. From Dodger trying to stay in place like a Good Boy to Chris wanting to capture the moment he knew he’d found his companion. It’s so pure. Even the short text in the tweet is telling. Chris, as much as I love him, can wax a little too poetic for my tastes sometimes. But he’s so emotional about Dodger, he has to stick to facts just to keep it together. It’s clichéd to say but we really don’t deserve any of our pets. And what makes it even sweeter is they feel the same way. Except for my cats – they think I’m incredibly lucky to have their company.

We should start a petition to get Chris to post a Dodger a Day – you know he has the Dodger photo library to do it, too.

Last summer, while driving through Concord, I had the great honor of seeing Dodger running with Chris. It was quite an emotional moment for me too.

Adorable! Rescue pets choose us, and this video shows it perfectly.
When I met Dexter (my ginger kitty) he didn’t want to play with toys, he didn’t want to get down on the floor, he wanted to hold onto us and go straight home.
4 years later he still follows us around and is all about cuddle time.

His roommate Buffy judges him immensely.

I love how so many celebrities now seem to be getting behind #adoptdon’tshop and publicly encouraging people to rescue their pets. Rescue pets are truly the best.

I’m still a bit emotional about what Patrick Stewart and his wife have been doing. This just tipped me over the edge

    This is a great story!

@Hecate, tell us more about this gecko…grandbaby? Is it your pet that has a pet or your bipedal child that has a pet? Either way, cute!

    • Hecate says:

I don’t know how I have gone this long without thinking about giving one of my pets a pet. I love that idea.

It’s my daughter’s leopard gecko and he has RSF – Resting Sassy Face. He’s the coolest little guy – figuratively and literally, I’m constantly freaked out at his body temp. He sits on my daughter’s head when she does homework. I think he gives her the answers.

I’m not crying you’re crying. Last month we had to have our rescue dog put to sleep after 10 years of making our family complete. She collapsed and after scans her stomach was just full of blood and cancer. I was too far away to get home in time to say goodbye and she was in too much pain to keep going. Ok now I have to leave my desk and go to the toilet and sob

    • OriginalLala says:

I’m so sorry – losing your family is really hard, especially when it’s so fast and you dont have time to say goodbye. Many hugs to you

I’m so sorry it’s really hard

    • lightpurple says:

So very sorry for your loss, Lara.

    • Jayna says:

I’m so sorry. I know how hard this must be for you not to get to say goodbye.

    • T.Fanty says:

I’m so sorry. I know how hard it is, but just think of how you changed her life. You saved her and she was so loved. That is everything.

    • Lara says:

Thank you everyone, I take great comfort in knowing that we gave her a life that she would never have had without us. She was a staffie and we rescued her from being a fighting dog. She was the least likely fighting dog you could have ever met. She loved us all so much and treated my youngest brother like he was her puppy. I could talk about her forever!

    • Milla says:

Awww bless your heart… I have a rescue and he’s so sweet, but i deleted pics of our first meeting. He was tortured and nope, i don’t wanna have that…
Chris’s dog is pawdorable. There’s something trustworthy when a person adopts and takes care of an animal…

    • Kelly says:

So sorry Lara! A year ago my Am Staff went – in one day – from racing around the backyard and eating my veggie burger, to extreme distress and was found with a massive internal bleed due to cancer. Her gums were white so I knew right away that she wouldn’t make it. It still really bothers me even after I’ve been fostering another dog (will adopt tomorrow) for a year.

  6. OriginalLala says:

When we went to the shelter to adopt our third kitty, one little fluff ball ran up to us and jumped into our arms, purred and kneaded and suckled my arm so we obviously took her home (our other cats are not cuddlers so i was a sucker for kitty cuddles!), and as it turns out she is a Tasmanian devil who runs around jumping on everything and hates cuddling! she knew if she was a sooky baby at the shelter she would get adopted! I love her feisty personality even if she wont cuddle me anymore!

    • scylla74 says:

There is a chance that she settles down when she gets a little older. I have a pair of brothers and one of them was such a ball of energy who never had the nerve to cuddle. Only total exhaustion would make him fall asleep on my lap (and I could finally pet him). Now he is about 9 years and just wants to cuddle a lot!

    • Redgrl says:

That happened to us too – our cat stuck his paw out of his cage and tapped my husband’s arm. We always said he picked us. After 10 wonderful years he died last month, unexpectedly, of kidney disease when he was only 12. Miss him terribly…

  7. jferber says:

    I like this guy.

  8. Jayna says:

Dodger is gorgeous. So is Chris.

  9. T.Fanty says:

Ummm, “second best Chris”? All Hemsworth does is surf and post photos of his regular, boring, human children. And does Pine even have a dog?

It’s like you take one point off for the moustache, and add one hundred for Dodger.

  10. H says:

I have to admit I go back and forth between Chris’s and who’s my favorite, either Pine or Evans, but I think this video has tipped me over to Evans. Nothing says love like a rescue dog. As my two and a half year old German Shepherd Mix sits cuddled up with me, and we prepare to go to an eye specialist tomorrow to see if her degenerative cataracts can be treated, I hope Chris has many wonderful and healthy years with Dodger.

    • The Recluse says:

Yeah, the same thing happens to me. Love dogs and love that he’s so sweet on his fur baby.

  11. Plaidsheets says:

Awwww. Dodger looks like a fluffier version of my Maggie. I found her at an adoption fair at work. She was the only dog not jumping around the cage and actively ignoring all the people gathered around her. I knew right then she was the dog for me.

  12. JA says:

Want to go home and hug my rescue! 2yrs in August. He is so deeply in love with me and vice versa…I call him my shadow! Dogs really do love their humans more than they love themselves so we should treat them just as good!!!

  13. Elizabeth Rose says:

Wait, did I miss something. Is he set to play the real-life Luigi in a Mario Brothers movie? That stash has got to go! ALSO, wasn’t he retiring awhile back or was that all just a publicity stunt. I don’t know what it is about him… I mean the dog is adorable no doubt, but he’s striking me as the kind of guy that’s using his dog for attention when he himself is pretty much a douche. Don’t know why, I just always get douche vibes from him.
