Meghan Markle in Altuzarra at the Commonwealth Youth Forum: cute or too busy?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped out in London today for a much-hyped appearance at the Commonwealth Youth Forum, which is taking place as part of this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Meghan was long-scheduled to make this appearance, and she’ll also be making an appearance on Friday at a CHOGM event. This is all very notable because Meghan is merely the fiancee of a prince, she hasn’t even married into The Firm yet and they’re already giving her big, important events to do.

For today’s appearance, Meghan wore an outfit which… I do not like. I’m a fan of her style, God knows. I love trousers, and I specifically love trousers on a royal (or soon-to-be-royal) woman. I feel like this would have been a good moment for a great, sharp pantsuit, or even a skirt-suit. Something with clean lines, maybe from Tom Ford or Calvin Klein. But no. Meghan chose this pinstriped, buttoned and belted dress from Altuzarra, with a Kardashian-esque blazer worn cape-style. The blazer is Camilla and Marc. On top of all that, she did a cross-body bag!! THERE’S TOO MUCH HAPPENING. Pinstripes are fine. Buttons on a dress are… fine (not really). A belted dress is fine. Buttons on a blazer are fine. A crossbody bag is fine. But put all of those pieces together, and it’s sort of messy? It just doesn’t look as polished as it could look. And my God, the BUTTONS. Who is telling royal women that they need to wear so many fakakta buttons?

    I like it

    • CTwinter says:

Me too. The dress is classic without being stodgy and the jacket across her shoulders is crisp and casual. The cross body bag is fine and the shoes rock. I think that this is a good look.

      • Imqrious2 says:

I think she looks great, youthful and professional. Not a big fan of the blazer on the shoulder look though: put it on or take it off. But I love the wide stripe of the cross-body with the thin pinstripes of the dress. Hair and makeup are perfect; she looks lovely.

      • Hazel says:

I like it a lot better once she took off the blazer. It wasn’t drapey enough to wear over the shoulders. The shoulder pads stick out like bat wings.

    • Ceire says:

Me too, I think it’s a great outfit. People love to nitpick.

    • Lela says:

I think the blazer on the shoulders throws it off, I love the dress and shoes, even the bag is okay but the blazer ruins the look

      • Eliza says:

It’s the blazer that throws it off. It has such structured shoulders, it looks like it’s about to fly away.

I also don’t like the touristy “put bag on under jacket so you dont get robbed” look.

      • KBB says:

It looks amateurish, like she saw someone else wear a blazer over their shoulders and liked it, so she tried to do it but picked the worst jacket possible for it. It would have been a lot better if she just wore it regularly.

      • RoyalSparkle says:

A miss. The jacket should have been worn- more covered arms/professional for her status/first important formal function with the CW leaders. Cross body bag – wrong event.

She wore /dressed better professional while working in Canada. Hoping for a change to a Royal stylist once HRH P/ess Henry.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

I agree–the blazer is of a stiff fabric, and that makes it sit on her shoulders in a very awkward way. That one element of her look is what throws the whole thing off.

In general, I almost always love Meghan’s style, which is in part because she usually looks so comfortable and self-assured in her clothes, but having the jacket so stiffly perched on her shoulders detracts from her customary look of ease.

If you look back at her various outfits, she often has a jacket or coat on her shoulders (see the Aritzia one of last week), wwhich usually looks wonderful, so it’s really only the fabric of this jacket.

      • Aurelia says:

More like the bag throws it off.

    • AnnaKist says:

I love the dress. I love the bag. I adore the blazer. But all the pieces together? Too much busy. (That’s what a darling, distressed little English kindergarten boy said to me a few years ago after his mum had to leave him for the first time to line up for class one morning. The noise and crowd had really upset him.) Yes, too much busy.

    • I like it, just don’t like the crossbody.

      • Bosandi says:

I like it too. I love a good crossbody bag. I’m always on the go so it works for me.

However in this case, the bag makes the look too busy. The stripe on the bag, the stripes on the dress, and the blazer over the shoulders are too much together. Your eyes don’t know where to land. Eliminate the bag and the look is fantastic.

    • Whaaaaaaatttt? says:

I kinda like the dress for a casual setting. Have you seen her inside without the jacket? Way to casual when compared to everyone else for this business event.

      • someone says:

Exactly – wayyy too casual without the jacket. The straps look like a summer dress or the straps to overalls that need a shirt under them. Not April weather appropriate at all, without the jacket over it.

I’m not sure the people who are saying they like it have seen the pictures of it with the jacket off.

      • Bluthfan says:

Not at all. There were plenty of people wearing casual sweaters and dress pants. I’d say she verges on overdressed for the event.

      • someone says:

Bluthfan, did you see the straps on the dress?

    • Lilly says:

Admittedly, I’m a self-avowed Meghan fan, but before I read and word and looked at the first photo, I thought: “wow!”. Great outfit. Let’s see if it all sells out.

    • Miss Melissa says:

      THE SHOES, DARLING.

      • Tessy says:

She better lay off the 4 inch heels and tight shoes. I saw pictures of her feet, she has big bunions and her big toe has been trained to point towards her other toes. They look downright painful. She’s only in her 30’s. Where is the rule that women have to wear spike heels for all occasions.

    • CynicalCeleste says:

GAH. my eyes! too much. nice pieces separately, but together, so wrong. Apart from a cashmere cardigan or a wrap, no clothing item ought be worn thrown over shoulders in such a way – contrived as hell. Either put your arms in and wear the jacket or don’t. How can she move around, shake hands or constantly touch her hair without it sliding down to the floor? Nope. Love the shoes, but it pains me to see them on cobblestone like that.

  2. Lara K says:

    I dunno, I like it!
The bag is a little busy because she has the blazer on her shoulders – if she had it on, it would be a buffer between the dress and the bag.
But I like the dress – it’s great for an outdoorsy type event.

    • NameChange says:

If she’d just worn the jacket (or even a black cardigan) over the dress, it would be a win. With the jacket worn as a cape, it looks a little off. But still not a bad outfit.

      • SlightlyAnonny says:

That’s it! I need the jacket to be on her or her to be in it. Whatever. I like the dress though.

      • another kate says:

Yeah, it’s the jacket worn as cape that makes it look too messy. I actually like a jacket worn over the shoulders with say a simple long black dress, because it adds a little interest, but here there’s already a lot going on and it becomes very messy with the cross bag.

    • Beluga says:

I like all of the elements separately, but there’s maybe 1 element too many. Simpler pumps or a lighter-coloured blazer with fewer buttons would have lifted it.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I think the contrasting buttons on the dress throw the whole thing off- big mistake, and as a result make the blazer and bold stripe crossbody not quite right. Changing that one element (contrasting buttons to disappearing buttons) would change everything.

      • RoyalSparkle says:

Expected better- maybe down playin g until HRH/wedding. Cant be only to showcase the serious event- as professonal wear would be better.

@thread on buttons….trying too hard to showcase waitie buttons.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Looking back at it after several hours… the double horizontal lines of the shoe bother me, too. Maybe more than the contrasting buttons on the dress.

    • Frida says:

Yeah the blazer on the shoulder look is trying too hard. I think without that I’d be on board with this look.

    • sa says:

Wasn’t there a something on here a while back about how royal women aren’t supposed to be seen removing their jackets? Assuming there was some truth to that, maybe wearing the jacket just on the shoulders (and with her purse under the jacket) avoids that issue, because she can take it off in one quick move.

Otherwise, I have nothing, because the jacket on the shoulders is (for me) what ruins this look.

  3. whatever says:

Did she steal that button-y jacket for Kate’s closet lol.

And that coat/jacket draped over the shoulders trend needs to die quickly. Every time I see someone wearing it like that I think to myself “how difficult is to put your arms through the sleeves and wear it properly?”

    • Nic919 says:

I agree so much with this. Either wear a cape if you want something draped over the shoulders or wear the blazer as you are supposed to. This is a stupid trend.

      • Scal says:

Also the strap and the bag being worn under the cape jacket is bizarre. Like she had the bag:dress on and then threw on the jacket last minute

    • Masamf says:

I don’t comment too much on fashion as Im not one with authority to be doing so, but this outfit is a miss to me. I would have loved pinstriped sharp pants with a black blazer suit. The pumps are awesome but I think the tripped cross bag is a bit too much. But she does look nice in it, though I guess my coming on here this often has kind of turned me off buttons. I was thinking, gee, wouldn’t it have been awesome if this dress had a hidden slip in zipper and just a couple of buttons at the top?
But its awesome that she is working and working more, good job RF.

      • Carrie1 says:

It screams Jess Mulroney to me and that’s not a good thing. She needs a better stylist fast.

    • noodle says:

the blazer on the shoulders screams of 10-tips-on-how-to-look-rich-and-elegant youtube videos

      • Pandy says:

        Snicker

      • RoyalSparkle says:

        *1
But not to rep HM-RF *(maybe BP felt is not yet HRH)-not yet married. P’ess Henry i/w is present – and at a global FC Leadership event so she should dress as her status.

Agree it’s great Princess Henry i/w is
given by BP HM POW is performing serious work for GB CW already!

  4. Beluga says:

Once again, I love that the Firm is getting her out there and letting her do these big events. It’s clear they think she can handle it well!

    • MRsBump says:

to be fair, she’s there as “support” with Harry, not on her own

      • Masamf says:

@MRsBump, its still an engagement for Meghan SMH. They could have chose for Harry to attend on his own, and leave Meghan sitting at home waiting for him. I don’t know why men don’t cut fellow down men like this but women just do it to fellow women so easily!!

      • MRsBump says:

Uhh this is not about “cutting” fellow women, just about being accurate. Eugenie was there too. Not sure what any of them (including Harry) bring to the table other than glamour and publicity. All the effusive praise is a bit OTT dont you think for basically just showing up?
And in this instance it is Harry who has been bestowed with the whole Youth ambassador nonsense, so yes she is attending in her capacity as future spouse.

      • Masamf says:

@MRsBump, no I don’t think the praise is OTT. It was announced by KP that it was an engagement for both Harry and Meghan. It could have been also announced that it was an engagement for Eugenie York and that too is fine, but Eugenie is not the topic of this thread so I’m not addressing her. Since KP announced it as a engagement, its fair for us to say that Meghan is working, because she sure is. After Kate Middleton engagement to prince William but pre-wedding, all engagements Kate Middleton attended were with prince William but they all were counted as Kate engagements. Kate supporters touted them as she is hitting ground running with so many engagements before wedding (even though they were just a handful), but now that Meghan is doing more than what Kate did all of a sudden counting them as Meghan’s engagements is “oh she just there to support Harry”? and “OTT praise” C’om now, be fair!

      • MRsBump says:

Not sure why you are bringing up Kate? This is not a competition and we shouldn’t have put one woman down in order to praise the other.
In this instance, she was there in a supportive role as Harry was the one named as ambassador. He was the only one present to that particular event. When she’s married, she be named patron of X or Y, and he’ll come along to support her.
Not everything is a diss towards Meghan.

      • Tonya says:

I often read posts…but I must interject here “that it appears as if the post keeps moving”…ummm I wonder “Why???”. Nobody questioned Kate’s four (4) appearances…No one. Now that Meghan has completed almost twenty (20)…the voices seem to get louder. Maybe because she is a foreigner her appearances are in an effect to introduce her to Britain (Scotland, Northern Ireland & Wales) & Britain (Scotland, Northern Ireland & Wales) to her…

      • Veronica T says:

        Tonya,
20 appearances? I don’t think so. Maybe 10? I may be wrong, so please link to a
        List of the 20.
        Thanks

      • whatever says:

Kate had more than 4 appearances btw.

      • MRsBump says:

Not sure why my posts keep disappearing.
Anyways what i said earlier was :
At the time that Kate got engaged, both Harry and Will still had their “civilian jobs” and were not full time royals, so her low engagement numbers reflect the fact that none of them were doing many public appearances.
That she didn’t do much after becoming a full time royal though is just her being lazy.

      • Tonya says:

Veronica, according to Gert’s Royals she did 8 events in 2017 and 18 & counting in 2018. PS…I mentioned almost 20, but it appears according to Gert that number should be higher..sorry…

I must mention that Meghan is not a royal (that comes after May 19, 2018) so all these engagements don’t count towards her CC total.

        here is a link…

        http://gertsroyals.blogspot.com/2000/06/prince-harry-main-page.html

Whatever, can you please inform me of how many engagements Kate appeared in prior to her wedding in 2011 so that I can correctly reference the difference in the future? Thanks.

      • Beluga says:

Gert lists 8 for Kate pre-marriage, including the signing of the condolence book for the NZ earthquake (not in the Court Circular).

His total for Meghan to date is 27 (7 in 2017, 19 in 2018) with 4 more confirmed to come before the wedding.

        http://gertsroyals.blogspot.co.uk/2017/11/2018-royal-wedding-q.html

      • Veronica T says:

I looked on that site and I don’t see 27 events for Meghan listed anywhere. Maybe I’m just missing it, but I’m trying to remember 27 outfits that she wore, and I’m coming up with 10 or 12.
If I’m mistaken, mea culpa. But I honestly can’t find them and don’t remember that many events.

      • Masamf says:

@Veronica, you could be right, they might be 12 (that’s what I can remember off the top pf my head. But even if they are ONLY 12 so far (we are still counting), she has done 4 times as many as Kate did pre wedding, so….

      • Beluga says:

Veronica, go to the link Tonya posted, scroll down to the ‘Meghan Markle’ section and click on the links below ‘List of Official Engagements’. There’s one for 2017 and one for 2018.

Like most royals, Meghan and Harry have often done more than one engagement on the same day, so the number of outfits is lower than the number of engagements.

      • PrincessK says:

Yes, Gertsroyals is really great fro a quick check on who is doing what and when. I wonder who is behind it, doing this unsung work.

    • Merritt says:

She is also getting an education and introduction to the UK and Commonwealth.

    • Tonya says:

      Thank you Beluga!

  5. aaa says:

Somewhere the Duchess of Cambridge is fuming because her button fetish has been co-opted. 😛

  6. Cher says:

Way to much going on here. Not impressed.

    • Tommy says:

I agree. WAY too busy. Stripes, buttons, cross-body bag, double-breasted blazer, strappy sandals. Just….no.

      • Tommy says:

Correction…..I meant to say strappy HEELS. I just feel like my eye doesn’t know where to look with so much going on, She’s a beautiful woman with a great face —-I would love to see her in cleaner, sleeker, lines.

      • Natalie S says:

Yes, I don’t know where to look first. It’s a collection of items rather than a look.

      • Aurelia says:

She looks like a real housewife of beverly hills off to meet Dorrit for a girls lunch. The strappy shoes and stripe bag are a fail. Dress and blazer a pass.

    • Milla says:

Its busy, clashing, fabrics and silluette are not flattering to each other… Its a sweet summer dress, the shoes are way too sexy for the dress. That blazer is also out of place, replace it with nice cardigan or boyfriend, longer blazer. And the bag, well if you wanna do the blazer on shoulders look, take a clutch or miniature.

In short, it’s a lot of heavy pieces on a light dress.

    • PrincessK says:

She still looks lovely of course, but it is all a bit busy for me too. I am no fashionista but I would not have put all those items together. But the poor girl is still managing to put things together from her own wardrobe. lets wait and see what happens when the allowance kicks in.😁

  7. Red says:

Buttons on a dress are not ok?? What?? Is this only because Kate likes buttons? I think the outfit is cute, if she didn’t have the bag. I also hate the trend of not wearing your jacket, just putting it over your shoulders. Otherwise, she looks cute!

    • @Red
I co-sign your assessment. Actually the jacket on the shoulders is ok for me but the crossbody is just too “I’m going to be be shopping and I’ll have plenty of bags to carry.”
I love the dress, shoes, and overall look though!

    • Milla says:

Shirts and dresses for summer are full of buttons. This is a growing trend and I like it. I mean, i don’t have a relationship with buttons like Kate, but i like them. Unlike zippers…

    • RoyalSparkle says:

      * 100 too.

  8. OriginalLala says:

the dress is cute but the blazer is the wrong cut/shape for the way she is wearing it – the large shoulder pads look weird when worn as a cape.

    • Olenna says:

I’m not feeling the whole look either, especially the draped, structured jacket. The shoulder pads are a big NO, and the dress is cute but too casual. A competent stylist would never have allowed this to happen. I do like the shoes and the bag, though.

  9. Lindy says:

Who is styling her? This is messy in so many ways.

    • AbbyRose says:

Her stylist is Jessica Mulroney, her BFF.

      • perplexed says:

Why is Jessica Mulroney considered to have good style? I’ve seen her Instagram and ….she looks ordinary.

      • Olenna says:

I think Meghan considers Jessica a good stylist, but I’m not sure she’s the one responsible for Meghan’s recent “work” outfits. I think Meghan is. IMO, it’s becoming more apparent that she doesn’t completely get the concept of styling for body type versus trend. On Suits, she had the advantage of being styled by a professional who understood the concept. But, on her own, it looks like she’s still trying to work it out.

      • KBB says:

I agree completely about the body type thing. She isn’t dressing for her body type, so everything ends up looking a bit off or poorly tailored. Her clothes are wearing her rather than the other way around. She could look so much better. I think she’ll get the hang of it eventually.

      • magnoliarose says:

I don’t think she understands her body type for her new role. She can’t dress like she used to so struggles sometimes. Nothing hideous or eye scorching just a learning curve.

      • Aurelia says:

I’ve noticed her clothes keep swamping her. She needs petite sizing.

      • Aurelia says:

And she regularly falls out of her shoes.

      • Masamf says:

I honestly don’t understand the criticism about Meghan’s shoes. I have worn high heels before and if you are standing technically on your toes, your foot sort of slide to the front and leaves a little gap at the heel side. If the shoe is too short/tight then my toes/feet are toast. In flats or sandals, I wear a size 8.5 but in heels, it has to be a size 9 as my foot is wider in front even though its shorter. Sometimes if Im lucky, Ill get a shoe that I love in a size 8.5 wide but those don’t come by very often and I have to go for a size 9. And Ive seen a lot of people that have the similar shoe/feet issues as mine, you see a lot of them on the street. This is not just exclusive to Meghan.

      • Carrie1 says:

Mulroney doesn’t have good style but her husband’s mother Mila was known to be a fashion addict in her day. I think Jessica is misguided trying to be a stylist as she’s not good at it. She has some influence over PM Trudeau and family too which is cringeworthy at some public appearances.

It may be too tough to ditch Mulroney pre wedding but I have hope for afterwards!

      • PrincessK says:

I am guessing that this Jessica Mulroney stylist thing is a bit of an exaggeration, I am sure most of this stuff is Meghan styling herself with various people making suggestions, solicited and unsolicited. Give the girl time, she is in a new country faced with lots of new situations that she has to dress for. But I believe in time she will get it right because she does have innate effortless style, she has after all done a lot of modelling a big advantage. Meghan also has the advantage of being very pretty so she will always look good.

It seems as though Jessica Mulroney will now erroneously be blamed for everything including the wedding dress, if people don’t end up liking it.

    • Mimi says:

I agree. This looks a mess and ill-fitting as usual. She just refuses to wear any kind of color now, which is such a shame because these neutrals don’t flatter her. At this point, I am prepared to be underwhelmed on May 19th.

She really needs to dump Jessica fast. Her taste is horrendous, and she clearly has no idea of how to style Meghan in a way that’s suitable for her new role.

      • Citresse says:

I think MM wears larger clothing because she wants her slender body to look even smaller. Even her feet. Though, I didn’t get a close up view of her shoes on this outing.

      • Redgrl says:

If Jessica Mulroney ‘s family didn’t have money she’d just be another plain girl with bad taste. But family money = connections = marrying a Mulroney = more connections = lots of P.R about her being some glam gal and great stylist. Which is a joke, IMHO.

      • KBB says:

I really hope the neutrals lately are just a coincidence. She looks great in jewel tones.

  10. MRsBump says:

While i’m glad she’s not wearing officey clothes, this is quite ill judged.
The shoulder robe-ing is giving me Melania vibes. I agree that the whole thing is just too much. A simple sheath dress would have done wonders.
I’ve never been wowed by her style but it has always been passable. This one is a fail.

    • Rhys says:

I find her style more interesting than Kate’s for example. I think she takes more chances.

      • MRsBump says:

You think? Hmmm, ithink both more or less remain in their comfort zone.
For meghan, If anything this is a departure from her usual boring but ok trousers with a top look. So i’ll give her points for that, but here the styling itself is just not good.

      • RoyalSparkle says:

        *100
agree with her style is more interesting….but as a royal/HRH – royal tradition is better for the week events. Lets hope not much ofJessica in the wedding planning. BP CH pay attention

Could be another downplay to waitie katie

    • KBB says:

That’s who it is! I couldn’t think of who it was that always wears their jackets like this, but it’s Melania. She pulls it off a lot better than this though.

  11. Hotsauceinmybag says:

I don’t like it… but the hair, skin and make up are certainly on point! Edit: after further review, I declare that the shoes are also pretty cute.

    • hmmm says:

My question is: We now know Waity gets photoshopped up the wazoo. Her hair and skin always look fab. What about Meghan?

      • magnoliarose says:

No. She isn’t because she looks the same from before. She has a darker complexion, and her mother has nice skin. Because she is an actress, I believe she was aware of her skin when she was young and has taken care of it.

      • Rayan says:

I didn’t realise her pictures were being photoshopped until I saw the unedited pics. The lovely picture of Meghan gazing at Harry from their last engagement? was edited. In the candid shots, her skin looked rougher under the eyes and on her forehead. No, I’m not nitpicking, but I thought her skin was in better shape.

  12. TheOriginalMia says:

I like it. Love the shoes. My mother does the jacket over the shoulder thing too. I don’t get it, but it’s her thing.

  13. Rhys says:

I love it – it’s new, it’s cool, it’s very 80’s. At the same time she can’t pull off pieces like this one, that swallow her delicate frame. She looks overwhelmed by it.
And I totally though it was a bespoke piece because it kind of looks like DIY fashion, but this dress is $2,000 in the website!

  14. Eve says:

She looks like a newbie celebrity walking for the first time to a big press event and loving every minute of the attention…..
As for the clothes, meh! She has a good body but needs a better stylist and a good tailor for sure.

  15. vex says:

I actually like this! Agree about the bag though, she should have gone for a really bright clutch or something, just so it wasn’t so black/white stripes.

Also – I’ve noticed when I dislike something that Meghan wears, she’s still wearing stuff that’s flattering and stylish. When Kate wears something bad, she looks like she’s about 55.

  16. HK9 says:

I like it tho. I think she should’ve just worn the jacket instead of the over the shoulder bit, but I still like it.

    • Citresse says:

Yes the over the shoulder look is better for times watching Harry on the polo field.

  17. sus says:

Does the jacket have huge shoulder pads or is it just sitting wonky on her? A bit too much for me. Somehow I don’t think the buttons will get as much scorn as they usually do.

  18. aquarius64 says:

No matter, what Meghan is wearing is going to be sold quickly.

Eugenie is there at the same event. Make your judgements.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5629543/Bride-Princess-Eugenie-flashes-legs-daring-floral-dress.html

    • OriginalLala says:

I like Eugenie’s dress and boots! (and NO panty hose!) I wish she would style her hair so it didnt look so…stiff?

    • LizB says:

Ooooo, I like! Very fun! She looks good.

    • Cee says:

I feel like she has different parts of 2 outfits on.

    • Mimi says:

She really loves her florals, doesn’t she? Her hair is the worst but there doesn’t seem to be much she can do with it.

    • magnoliarose says:

I do not like Eugenie’s outfit at all. The two elements don’t compliment each other and look like they are from two different seasons.
I like Meghan’s dress and shoes but not with the bag, and I am eh on the jacket. I do like trying new things and some risk taking, but a simpler small clutch and a light spring wrap would have been better. Possibly in a color and romantic ponytail.
I have been wearing mine in a big loose, haphazard braid a bit to the side that isn’t sleek or tightly pulled with a clubbed ribbon. I have been playing around with the ribbon but I like a less severe ponytail in the spring, and it goes with her “messy” bun style.

    • Lady D says:

Eugenie is starting to look just like her mom.

      • Kelly says:

I’ve always thought she looks just like Fergie. She has her mouth, teeth, voice, eyes. Bea looks like a Windsor with Andrew’s round eyes and the teeth.

I thought tights were mandatory for official events.

      • LAK says:

Eugenie is starting to resemble Fergie, but she started out looking like the QM. An absolute spitting image.

    • imqrious2 says:

She looks awful! Those boots do not go with that dress at all. And girl, you have lovely hair: what did you do to it? She’s beginning to look more like Sarah now, especially when she smiles. Get thee to a stylist, STAT! (Gives me a shudder to think what her wedding gown is going to look like!)

    • Masamf says:

Nope, don’t like Eugenie’s outfit at all.

    • Keepitreal says:

Thanks for sharing. Ummmm, no and no.

    • SlightlyAnonny says:

I don’t usually click dm links but whoa, that is bad. The dress is too short (I am by no means a prude but come on! You don’t have to go tea length but mid-thigh is not acceptable especially on steps), the boots are a bad choice with the dress and they highlight the fact that she needs lotion on her knees. And the hair doesn’t match the dress which is something I never thought I would write. The dress is fun and floral, the hair is a helmet.

  19. Becks says:

I think I like the dress, and I like the shoes. But the dress does not work with the cross body bag – not the bag itself, and in the pictures without the coat, the strap of the bag is too busy with the dress.

I want to like this overall outfit – pinstriped dress, in a different style from what we have seen, with great shoes and a cross body bag?? But there is too much going on and I think it’s the first time I’ve seen her look a little awkward, like she knows there is too much going on as well.

  20. bread says:

It looks like something Amal Clooney might wear. Too much happening and a bit costumey. Like a 1940s gangster’s moll who finally ditched him and went to secretarial school.

  21. Astrid says:

    Love her shoe game

  22. LizB says:

I’ll withhold judgement until I see her without the cape-blazer. Looks kinda ridiculous, but I think I like the dress. The shoes are nice.

But, for me, the real winner is HARRY NOT WEARING BLUE!!!! HUZZAH!

    • koko says:

100% agree with the Harry comment. It’s nice seeing him in a different color/suit.

    • Hazel says:

      Yes! Harry looks good!

    • hmmm says:

He still wears desert boots, the male version of Waity’s wedges, IMO. Ugh. Save them for your luxe safaris.

    • Masamf says:

@LizB, ITAWY re: Haz, he looks really very sharp. I got a question for you CBers, does Harry ever let Meghan to walk behind him, you know like they say she has to be a step behind? It seems like every time she attempts to walk a step behind him he won’t allow it, like you see him encouraging her to walk infant or be at his side rather than behind him, anybody else noticed? I know woman were not created from the skull to be above man, nor from the heel to be beneath him but from the rib to be equals (wink), but the BR protocol doesn’t do things that way, non?

    • PrincessK says:

Oh yes, the boys get away with so much don’t they…no scrutiny at all. I have said it before I think that unlike their father William and Harry have no interest in style at all. A great pity because these two lads have good physique’s and could really look sharp if they wanted to. Harry often does look a bit scruffy.

  23. aaa says:

The bag is what takes the ensemble into too busy territory.

I like the dress, it seems more suited for an actress at a photo-call or making a chat show appearance, but if paired with a simple jacket that was fully worn (and not just worn on the shoulders), it could work IMO as part of a royal engagement ensemble.

Love the shoes, they look a bit impractical but if Meghan can handle them, then more power to her.

The bag is very nice but not with this outfit.

  24. Citresse says:

From a distance it looks OK but closer up, yes it looks busy and she looks crumpled
I saw DM photos and MM removed the jacket….it looks like MM was ready to board a ship for a Caribbean cruise.

    • minx says:

Was just going to say that…when I looked up close it seemed a bit messy. I like the shoes and they elongate her, which she needs because there’s a lot going on. She looks pretty otherwise, as always.

  25. Becks says:

I wonder if she had the dress picked out, and then it was colder than she was expecting so she threw on the jacket last minute. She clearly intended to take it off the whole time, hence being over her shoulders and the bag under it. So maybe it was a last minute addition?

    • Sam says:

It’s actually pretty hot in London

    • someone says:

The only way the straps on that dress would have been appropriate are if it had been 100 degrees outside. The top to that dress is skinny overall type straps. She needed the jacket to make the dress business-y enough.

  26. Cee says:

IDK, I kind of love it! It’s interesting and just barely works. A bit more of stripes and it would have been terrible.

  27. Maum says:

She clearly has an issue with oversize outerwear.

    • MellyMel says:

It’s actually on trend right now.

      • hmmm says:

Which just makes her a fashion victim.

      • magnoliarose says:

It is on trend, and I like it. I have seen enough body con clothing to last for several years. A lot of it is starting to look downright tacky. It will free women from their Spanx addictions.

  28. Beth says:

It looks a lot better than the stylish, but ill-fitting clothes she often wears. Wearing a coat hanging lopsided off the shoulders like the Kardashians, Melania, and now Meghan, ruins a good outfit

  29. lightpurple says:

PUT THE BLAZER ON! Whoever started this “trend” of not putting arms in sleeves needs to suffer some horrid punishment. If you want to wear a cape or poncho, wear a cape or poncho but if the garment has sleeves, put your arms in the sleeves. Wearing the jacket properly, with the bag on the outside, over the shoulder, not across the body, would pull this look together. This way, stuff looks bunched, sloppy and uncomfortable when these are all great pieces that deserve better.

And God bless her but stilettos on cobblestones is extremely hazardous to one’s ankles and wrists.

  30. MellyMel says:

I like the look, but I want to see it without the jacket. I wear my blazers like capes sometimes too, so I wan’t judge her for that.

  31. Ib says:

It’s bizarrely summery. When she takes the jacket off the dress is (thick) spaghetti straps.. it wouldn’t be AS bad if she bore the jacket like a jacket even just walking into the building.

  32. Sansa says:

The dress reminds me of Diana, like it.

  33. AbbyRose says:

She looks silly. Stripes, buttons, shoulder pads, jacket over shoulders, cross body bag, way too much going on and none of it good. Her shoes are nice and at least she’s not sporting the messy up fo today.

  34. Ollie says:

    Nice apron 🙂
That dress is ugly. Horrible straps and it does nothing for her short torso, it makes her look wider than she is. Unnecessary.
Either blazer (wear it normal) or bag. Not both. The bag is cool but too stripy together with the apron.
The blazer-shoulder look is very celebrity fashion victim.

    Her hair looks super.

  35. aerohead21 says:

I personally hate the whole look. All of it. Separately and together. The dress is cheap looking and doesn’t fit her well. The blazer worn as a cape?! No, sorry. Plus it doesn’t look like it’d fit properly either. And yeah, buttons, stripes, pockets, purse….way too much.

  36. Jay says:

Seriously. When are we going to see a sharp chignon (sans hair net, of course ;-P) or a sleek ponytail on this girl? The center part loose curl look is fine, but I just want to mail her a hair tie and a pack of bobby pins!

I adore the dress. Jackets draped as capes will never not look stupid to me, mostly because it seem like you’d have to spend the whole time constantly pulling it back over your shoulders. I think a pink or coral cardigan would have made this pop and been beautiful with her complexion.

Of course, ANYTHING looks well-styled next to Eugenie today…

  37. Ina says:

I love it when celebs aren’t afraid to make unique style choices. Fashion should be fun; it’s not always about glamour and sexiness.

  38. Keepitreal says:

I was looking forward to seeing her outfit for this event. However, it is a fail, all way round. $2000 for a dress? I cannot understand why she continues to misstep. Her pre-Harry look was far superior and well tailored. Sorry, I cannot rave about it. And please someone ask her to stop fiddling with her hair!
PS: The dress looks worse without the blazer/cape on!

    • Bethany F says:

keep touching the hair, meghan, you don’t have to follow outdated fashion rules from another generation!

      • MellyMel says:

Haha exactly! Every time I see a comment about her touching her hair or it needing to be put up in a neat bun, I hope she keeps doing the opposite. I do not understand the obsession with her hair. And honestly same with Kate or any other woman.

      • Jay says:

Fiddling with her hair is, to me at least, less about any kind of rule or etiquette and more about avoiding needles distraction for her and those speaking with her. She’s touching it to move it out of her face, so it’s not the act of touching/fiddling itself that’s kind of annoying, it’s the easily avoided problem of having hair in her face while meeting and greeting that’s a bit irksome.

    • Beth says:

If I touched and fiddled with my hair as much as she does with hers, my hair would be as greasy as a grilled cheese sandwich.

      • Tonya says:

Beth, people of African decent often have to add oil to their hair.

      • Keepitreal says:

Thank you; this was my point. I am also a bi-racial woman and I use coconut oil in my hair. Sorry I offended the people here who think that not touching one’s hair constantly is too conservative. As far as I am concerned, she can touch away to her heart’s content!

      • imqrious2 says:

I’m white, and as I’m growing out a pixie, I’m always tucking my hair behind my ears. And it doesn’t make my hair greasy in the least. If touching makes your hair greasy, I suggest you wash your hands more frequently 😊

      • Erinn says:

        imqrious2

It’s not the issue of grease coming from your hands, come on now, that’s just condescending. If you’re prone to oily hair, touching it causes it to move around, which causes the oils to spread more easily. Same with brushing it too frequently. If have an oily scalp fiddling with your hair will 100% cause it to look/feel more oily faster.

      • PrincessK says:

        These comments are so funny…….😂😂😂.

      • magnoliarose says:

        @PrincessK
They make me laugh too. 🙂

      • Beth says:

@imqrious2, do you mean that just washing my hands more often would keep my hair from getting greasy? Wow! I feel so silly, because like @Erinn said, I thought it was oil being spread from my scalp and forehead to my hair with my comb and brush. Thanks for your beauty tip!

    • Aurelia says:

Agreed, her style was way better, albeit a bit formulaic, before the engagenent.

  39. ValiantlyVarnished says:

Love it. This looks like an outfit I would wear in the spring and summer to work. Is it a little extra? Yes. And that’s one of the things I love about it.

  40. Merritt says:

I don’t like the bag being worn crossbody. It looks odd with the outfit.

  41. Amelie says:

Had she worn the blazer instead of draping it on her her shoulders I think this look would have been a win for me. I’m not crazy about the dress, it’s very summery looking for April? Or maybe it’s just because it’s still in the 40s-50s here in NYC and maybe it’s warmer in London I’m a bit confused by the choice. Also it’s one of those dresses that is tailored awkwardly that in motion it just looks weird but when you’re standing still it looks normal. I hate those kind of dresses! But paired with the blazer I think it would have been passable. I will say at least Meghan gives us things to comment about, Kate never would have worn this outfit in a million years.

Meghan is scheduled for an appearance tomorrow and on Saturday as well I believe.

  42. Tan says:

    I like it fine

    It looks official yet fun

    Event appropriate one can say

  43. Citresse says:

OK I was able to zoom in on DM photo of MM’s shoes. They’re too big. There’s quite a space between her heels and the back of the shoes. It looks stupid. And it’s not practical. I guess MM’s not planning on walking a lot otherwise she’d have major blisters from the friction. Can MM find some clothing and shoes that actually fit her????

    • imqrious2 says:

When you wear very high heels, your foot slides forward when you walk. They’re made that way, to provide that room. If you buy shoes where the back is “in place” when you step, they’ll be too small when you’re standing still.

      • SlightlyAnonny says:

This. And some people have more “heel” than others and that can make shoes look too big when really they are fitting just fine. I never got the criticism of her shoe size (possibly because I haven’t studied her feet) but I do know what it’s like to wear too big shoes (college, I was cheap and they were cute). It’s hard to walk. She always looks to be walking just fine.

    • Ollie says:

Have you seen that horrible DM article about Meghan’s feet? They wrote some stupid stuff just to “foot-shame” her. Meghan’s feet are ugly, 99% of feet are ugly by the way.
Meghan has bunions a la Victoria Beckham.
It makes sense that she wears bigger shoes. Those bunions look painful! I’m surprised she even wears such high heels but I guess she’s used to the pain and wants to look taller at all costs.

      • Masamf says:

Ollie, what do you mean “Meghan’s feet are ugly”? I’m not sure if you are appalled by someone’s statement on DM (that Meghan’s feet are ugly) or if this is a statement you are making yourself. If its your statement, Im surprised that you are complaining about DM body shaming her and yet you are doing the same thing in your post!! If you aren’t making this statement, I apologize for assuming that you were.
I find it very disturbing people making other’s bodies a topic of discussion, like why? Is there alone in this entire world who is perfect? Why instead of discussing Meghan’s clothes (something she can do something about/change) are we venturing into body shaming her about how her feet were created? I understand if people commented on Khloe Kardashian lips (they are man made and she can do something about them to change the look) but discussing a body or body part that one can’t change is not cool!!

      • PrincessK says:

Well since we are talking bunions, do remember that Meghan has worked as a model and has had to force her feet into all kinds of shoes for shoots and fashion events and has had to endure the pain. She is in good company, if you have ever seen Naomi Campbells bunions, which are far worse, but its just evidence of her trade. After all a carpenter usually has rough hands, saxophonists have misshapen lips, rugby players have broken noses and cauliflower ears and are all probably very proud that they do honest good work.

  44. starryfish says:

As usual, I like all of her accessories, but this is my least favorite of her dresses; I didn’t like it when she wore it before Harry & I don’t like it now. My favorite thing about this outfit though is all of the pearl clutching that will ensue from certain corners.

  45. Honey says:

Hmm. On the one hand, I think it’s ok but definitely not a win. On the other hand, it looks way too casual and that definitely isn’t good. I think she should have chosen a different outfit. I also think she’s getting it wrong because she’s actually trying to mix it up too much . . . being too conscious and/or trying to showcase. . instead of just selecting what looks on her and feels good to her . . you know . . . just doing it . . . and that’s showcasing.

  46. Sam says:

I hated this. The dress was the only nice thing about it and I most especially didn’t like the shoes Is that heel height even allowed? I don’t know but it looks very inappropriate

  47. Rianic says:

I usually like her style, but this is a miss. If she wanted to wear a cape, she should have worn a cape. The jacket over the shoulders throws everything off.

  48. Dee says:

I loveee this dress and shoe combo. Don’t care for the blazer or bag. She’s so pretty it’s not fair.

  49. CityGirl says:

I think she looks pretty fabulous!

  50. visky says:

Usually, love her style but it’s a miss for me. The dress is ill-fitting and looks like something that needs to be worn for a brunch in San Tropez and not for a high profile royal engagement in Uk in April. The combination of everything together is just try hard to me.

  51. Redgrl says:

Not crazy about this outfit. Hard to see re the dress, but the blazer is too big/big shoulders and I agree with the others that the draping it over shoulders is not a good look. Bag is too busy. I have to say – if Kate was wearing this, then the additional comments would be 1) button mocking 2) too slit up the front for a flash risk and 3) messy hair. Kate would probably get praise for less boring shoes if she wore these. Just sayin’.

    • Keepitreal says:

      This!

    • Masamf says:

Meghan’s slit is not dangerously high, it just goes up to her knee, you can’t see anything beyond that. The buttons are horrendous regardless of whether they’re on Kate or Meghan’s dress, they are way too big and way too many regardless of who wears them. My opinion of course.

      • Redgrl says:

No, in some photos you can see the slit goes above her knees. This can be a big problem when you sit down. I know from experience – I bought a suit once where the slit was in the front. It only went a little above the knee – but when I sat down it was very… awkward! Had to try to hold the two parts across my lap as it kept flapping open. Had to get it retailored so I wouldn’t embarrass myself when I sat down.

  52. Violet says:

I like the pieces but not together. The stripes and the buttons and the ankle straps all sort of collide with each other – she hasn’t got enough length for all those details, and even on tall girls it can be difficult not to look cluttered with a long patterned skirt and shoe straps that go up the leg. I get the look she’s going for but it’s so cluttered. If she had worn the jacket closed and buttoned, it would have cinched in the waist and given a more fitted look, but basically It’s a summer dress for a garden party. The jacket was probably a nod to formality, but it doesn’t work unless closed. I don’t think she’s quite found her look yet.

  53. hmmm says:

Yeah, because those shoes say, “I’m a professional who takes this meeting seriously. Really, it’s not about moi”.

  54. Adara says:

Yeah this outfit is………pretty ugly. I just don’t understand what she was thinking. And wear the damn Blazer not place it like a cape. It would be cooler in the building surely?

  55. M.A.F. says:

I like the dress & the bag (I want the bag) but I feel the dress should be tailored more. And I have never liked the blazer just worn on the shoulder look on anyone. Either put your arms through the sleeves or leave the jacket at home.

  56. Lucy says:

It’s…different! Not a bad thing at all. I probably wouldn’t have chosen this, but she makes it work, somehow. Those shoes are fantastic, that’s for sure.

  57. AmandaPanda says:

It’s absolutely horrid. It looks like something you’d wear to lunch at an overpriced lunch spot in the south of France. And even for there it’s not very nice. The mind boggles that she thought this was appropriate.

Eugenie’s outfit is pretty bad too – the boots are way too heavy for the dress.

In the spirit of saying something nice, I must tell all royal watching celebitchies that about an hour ago I was on the Tube escalator at South Kensington nextto none other than James Middleton and his cute dog. And he was SMOKING HOT. I’ve never found him attractive in pics before, but irl I would totally hit it.

    • Keepitreal says:

Great post! I’m at work in New York, missing home (the UK)!

    • CynicalCeleste says:

I love it when AmandaPanda posts 🙂

Looks to me like she’s having a bit of a fashion identity crisis. Ample photographic evidence proves she came into this with an innate classic / cool girl style which she seemed so confident in and still shines at times… but since the engagement it’s increasingly ill fitting pieces awkwardly put together and at times, costumey.

Granted, it must be tough trying to figure out one’s style with the whole world watching, and I’m sure she’ll figure it out.

      • Rayan says:

All signs point to MM having a better stylist during her celebrity actress years. Seems like she is putting these looks together herself, so she isn’t getting them quite right.

    • magnoliarose says:

@Amandapanda James Middleton hot? He reminds me too much of Jude Law.
I have seen JL in person several times, and they have that same smarmy ingratiating smile I despise. Like they are on the make all the time.
He might make you listen to his big plan to take over the universe with marshmallows. I would be cautious if I were you. (sarc)

      • Olenna says:

LOL! Dr. Stay Puft, evil genius! He’s always looked like Tim Curry’s secret son to me but, yeah, I can see the JL smarm now that you mention it.

    • Aurelia says:

      Amanda, you are so funny.

    • Laura says:

I have also seen James Middleton in London with his dog and he’s shockingly attractive (James, not the dog). His eyes are beautiful and sparky and he’s very handsome. I, too, never thought much of him from photos.

I don’t generally have an issue with sleeveless in professional settings but her dress is inappropriate and comes across as disrespectful to everyone she’s meeting with who made an effort to wear professional attire for the day. Her dress is for a seaside stroll and her shoes are for an evening event.

  58. Guest says:

Love the hair, shoes and makeup. Hate hate the dress. I like shes experimenting but ew no.

    • Lulu says:

I think the shoes are too much for daytime.
It sreams try hard to me, same for the jacket.
This is a miss in my opinion. It all looks too much. The shoes would be great for evening event. I really don’t like with all the buttons, belt and stripes. Kerry Washington wore it so much better in navy. More classic lines.

  59. Mrs. Wellen-Melon says:

A big NO on the shoes here. Not for daytime. Also, not the most flattering shoe on her legs.

The idea of the jacket is very Rosalind Russell 1940’s career gal “His Gal Friday”. The reality of this particular jacket doesn’t deliver, especially if those are brass buttons (can’t tell).

110% agree with Eliza about the crossbag-under-coat thing.

The dress is good. Her hair is good. Her makeup is good.

    • hmmm says:

Alas, she’s no Rosalind Russell (who was tall and had major presence). Love your moniker (and the movie)!

  60. Mantha says:

I’m so worried Meghan might end up dressing like Kate *sighs* …This outfit looks ok nothing more….

  61. Cerys says:

Not her best look. The dress is too informal, the shoulders on the jacket make her look like an American footballer and the shoes look too wide on her. The dress may have looked better if she had worn a fitted black jacket with it. She seems very petite and would look much better in properly fitting clothes.

  62. Bailie says:

I usually like her style : minus the too long pants, the mushroom hat, the engagement dress was too fussy and her shoes/boots visiting some athletes was inappropriate.

Sorry, no, this is way too busy/fussy for my taste.

I would have worn the dress with a more fitted to the waist, light weight black cashmere sweater with all black not very visible or standout buttons.

I would have changed the bag to a simple high quality all black leather bag.

The shoes are too “evening” and over the top for daytime, a more simple black pumps or slingbacks without the huge tall heels would have worked much, much better.

Her hair looks great and her skin/make up looks lovely.

    Nice, delicate jewelry.

Simple, classic, elegant, timeless clothing in high quality fabrics : silk, cashmere, wool, cotton that is tailored well and without the fussiness is all she needs.

I don’t want the RF to be Style Icons, I have actors and models for that.

  63. I think this outfit swallows her. It looks enormous. Kate wears everything skin tight & Megan’s clothes look like two people could wear them together!
Also, could there ever be several photos of Megan without her fingers in her hair? She every bit as bad as Kate with this. Or is this something women of their age feel they have to do?

    • Citresse says:

I know!! HRH Prince Philip is a large man. It looks like MM raided his closet and grabbed one of his blazers to wear as some kind of quasi shawl for this appearance.

    • Argonaut says:

Bethany— women Meghan’s age DON’T CARE about touching their hair. it has nothing to do with feeling they HAVE TO touch it, rather that women her age were not raised with this apparent rule not to. I’m sorry but it is outdated! I’m her age, I’m American and this site is the first I’ve heard of not being professional to touch your own hair!!

  64. Other Renee says:

The overall look is messy and ill-fitting. Like most of the outfits she’s worn since her engagement. I do not understand the love many here have for her outfits. I can’t help but suspect that it’s grounded in the “hate Kate” sentiment, trying to elevate Meghan as some fabulous style maven to contrast with boring Kate. I happen to like about 80 percent of what Kate wears. Meaghan does not yet look put together at all regardless of what she’s paying for these outfits. I think she has sincere intentions of doing good in the world and hope she can pull her style together soon.

    • ASHBY says:

      @ Other Renee

I’ve rarely liked Kate’s looks way, way before I have ever heard of Meghan.

I find Kate’s clothes often inappropriate, immature and old at the same time.

The busy prints, the flowers, the numerous buttons, the beyond hideous wedges, the skirts flying near her waist in the wind, the sausage curls and that black eyeliner applied with a snow shovel. It is almost as aging on her as SJP.

I’m not even fan of MM wearing black eyeliner and she certainly has the lovely darker skin tone and hair color to pull it off.

I mostly like what MM wears, with few exceptions, I think her pants are too long quite often, the shoes are not always appropriate for the events, like those boots watching athletes with heels digging into the grass, the poop colored mushroom hat and the too fussy engagement evening dress.

This outfit is too busy, the jacket doesn’t work at all, the dress overwhelms her slight frame, the shoes are too much for daytime, the bag is busy looking with the dress.

The dress would have worked with a plain black blazer, simple black pumps and black leather bag.

MM is no fashion plate and she shouldn’t be one, we have Hollywood for that.

    • Rayan says:

MM is wearing the same pieces that thousands of professional women wear every single day. I didn’t expect her to be a huge fashionista, but I did expect polished outfits. This is the type of outfit one would wear to brunch! I think people on this site dislike Kate’s style because they cant relate to her clothing choices. I actually like flared, flirty skirts and dresses, they are cute and feminine. Kate’s outfits for the European tour last year were great, imo

    • Veronica T says:

I don’t understand why these women, both Kate and Meghan, don’t look toward Letizia as an example of how to dress as a professional and also formally.
This was a big event. Meghan looked sloppy. Kate often looks too girly. Letizia has it right – a skirt, a blouse and a blazer. The skirt can be interesting, the blouse can be a gorgeous color and the blazer can be funky, but for pete’s sakes, young royal ladies, be professional!! Meghan wasn’t going to a picnic or sporting event – and besides, the dress makes her look really boxy. Short waisted people can’t wear tailored waists and wide belts. I know – I am one. I think separates is the way to go for her. A dark skirt, hot pink blouse and dark funky jacket. Done.

      • Maria says:

The other one who dresses really well is CP Mary of Denmark. Classic, with a bit of an edge. Meghan’s outfit is all wrong. I can’t believe the dress cost $2,000.

      • Nic919 says:

Letizia has been doing this for a while and she rarely missteps.

  65. perplexed says:

Because she’s attractive, whatever she wears looks fine to me. But I am so tired of hearing about Jessica Mulroney — geez, that lady annoys me. In the run up to the wedding, I keep seeing articles about Mulroney and I have no idea why she’s being promoted so hard.

  66. Amber says:

Love everything here. Stylish and not flashy

  67. Jessica says:

I like it except she should either put the blazer on or leave it off. It looks silly on her shoulders.

  68. dee says:

Why is she always touching her hair.

  69. Shannon says:

I absolutely LOVE the dress! But I’m not crazy about the across-the-shoulder bag with it and the blazer on her shoulders. I think a black clutch and actually wearing the blazer would have looked better. But that dress? I’m in love with it.

  70. happy girl says:

The whole thing, to me, is a mess. Too many places for the eye to fall. Vertical stripes broken by a horizontally striped belt; the cross-body bag makes yet another break across the chest; the shoes add two more stripes/breaks. Then spray the whole thing with buttons. And that damn jacket is just awful worn over the shoulders (crooked and about to fall off). A heavy wool blazer over a spring/summer dress is wrong, too. Separately, they’re all fine, but together = fail.

Damn, I clearly have time on my hands this afternoon 🙂

    • Violet says:

@happy girl “Too many places for the eye to fall.” In a nutshell. The outfit is wearing her.

  71. spidee!!! says:

As buttons are to Kate belts are to Meghan

  72. maxine ducamp says:

Meghan Markle is beautiful but this is the least favorite outfit that I’ve seen her in. First off, not a fan of the dress. It’s like overalls on top and trenchcoat dress below. Plus the pinstripes seem too business-like for the casual top of the dress. For me, the dress, even on its own, is a hard pass. Secondly, whether worn on the shoulders or as intended, the conservative business suit jacket didn’t work with the dress. Finally, loved the shoes, but they seemed to be more of an evening look than work/day event look. Maybe in a slightly lower heel?

  73. Elaine says:

Too messy. And busy. You know what would have worked nicely? The snazzy navy dress she wore to watch Harry play polo.

The overall look comes across as too casual. Don’t get too comfortable, Megs!

    But…I still love her.

    #Megs4Eva!!

    • Rayan says:

I’m not really sure why she wore a formal gown to a Polo field? It was a lovely Berardi dress but the wrong choice for watching polo.

  74. mellie says:

I like it! Why the F#$K do people get so worked up about buttons on here, sometimes (such as in this case and on various coats etc..), they look kind of nice. Plus, there are many times when you need ’em!

    • happy girl says:

@mellie I actually love well-placed buttons. Either military-style or, one or two “statement” buttons on a coat or dress….very chic. I just think it’s too damn much on this mess she’s wearing above. The whole things is a dog’s breakfast. 🙂

    • Barcelona says:

      @ Mellie

The buttons on the dress are clashing with the stripes on her dress and and the jacket buttons.
The stripes on the bag don’t work with the dress buttons either.
      It’s all too much.
I got no issue with some discreet buttons, they are sometimes needed, but not too many things are as hideous looking as shiny buttons.
      Gross, just gross!

    • mellie says:

I like them, but I also kind of like 80’s hair, so what do I know! 🙂

      • Barcelona says:

        @ Mellie

You know what you like, nothing wrong with that.
        MM has a small frame.
I think all this fussy stuff : the buttons, the stripes, the belt, the striped bag, the strappy shoes, the jacket with shiny buttons thrown over her shoulder, it seems to overwhelm her.
I like the thought I have before leaving my house, take at least two things off before getting to the door.
But I’m European minimalist, less is more in my book and I would only consider shiny, fussy, beaded over the top things, If I would join some Las Vegas stage show as a show girl!
        Ha-ha…

  75. Olivia says:

This is very much a Jessica Mulroney look. The problem is, Jess doesn’t really now how to dress. I think Meghan needs to seek some different advice. I know Jess is her friend but she needs to cut the professional relationship. There are plenty of really great stylists in London. She should take advantage of living in such a fashionable city and reach out to those in the know. Back in the day, Princess Di sought out the help of the editor of Harper’s Bazaar. That would be the advice I’d give Meghan.

    • Guest says:

I hope after her wedding she has a different stylist.

      • Bea says:

        I hope so too!

For most part I think Meghan has a nice, modern style but I think a new stylist will bring her looks together better so she can look polished.

    • RoyalSparkle says:

      *100

jessica is not a Royal stylist (now or after May 19), and the longer P’ess Henry push her business as a stylist – will become a negati ve to jessica’s name.

    • Masamf says:

This is the first time I say this, Meghan has got to ditch Jessica Malroney pronto, she isn’t working as her stylist. But then, if she ditches her, won’t she be accused of ditching old friends when she moves to new places?

      • LAK says:

She can ditch their professional relationship whilst maintaining the personal one. It can be done.

    • Aurelia says:

She needs to borrow princess chazza of monacos stylist. Perfection.

  76. Karen says:

This is a miss for me. Would like dress to wear to Wimbledon. All the pieces I like separately but not together. However, she is not stuffy!

  77. Lola says:

She looks like such a try-hard with that jacket on her shoulders like that. It’s like she is there for the fashion show and not for the work and it’s making me think maybe she is shallow and that maybe that instagrammer that always bashes her is right about her. I do like all the pieces though. I don’t like her in strappy shoes. They always look big. And Harry looks fantastic. I just feel like she is too glamorous to be taken seriously. Does that make sense?

  78. Sage says:

    Throw the entire outfit away.

  79. PamelaRose says:

Am I the only one who doesn’t think they look good together? (And no, I’m not a hater of Megan or Harry ) I like them both as individuals. But together….I don’t know. Maybe it’s their body language together. I feel Harry definitely is in love and wants nothing more than to give her the world. But, I don’t think Megan is as in love with him as she is with the opportunities that a life as a royal will give her. I don’t think she’s some manipulative opportunist or anything like that. I just think she got caught up in the whole romance of it all and just lept before she considered whether or not he was a good match for her. She’s definitely the alpha in this relationship. She’s definitely wants this life; if for no reason other then the connections she will make and the opportunities they will bring her in the future. But I don’t get the vibe thats she crazy in love with him. As an alpha woman myself (in my work life) I have found it really important to have an alpha male as a mate. Harry seems a bit beta to me. JMHO.

    • Skylark says:

I think that’s actually a very astute assessment of their relationship. They seem more like a working partnership than a love match. That’s not to say it can’t or won’t work – in fact it may well work precisely because of that – but I also find it hard to believe that love is what’s brought these two together.

The good thing is that he’s the beta.

      • PamelaRose says:

So, true. Who’s to say really what makes a relationship work and what doesn’t. That’s up to the individuals involved.

Having children also changes the dynamics of a relationship, so it’ll be interesting to watch how they evolve as a couple.

      • Aurelia says:

Wait until the lust wears off. …

    • Maria says:

She gushed all over him in the interview. They sure seemed like a couple in love. Not saying you’re wrong but did I miss something?

  80. Kay says:

I like it. She’s dressed like young women I see around the manhattan. Beautiful girl!

    • Rayan says:

Case in point…. She looks fresh and gorgeous but far too casual for the event. She has an Insta-Blogger type of style going on here.

  81. Jayna says:

The blazer across her shoulders is just dumb. Don’t even tell me it’s a fashion statement and for effect. I know what looks silly on someone. Either have the blazer actually on or take it off.

Unlike others, I actually like the rest of her outfit, though. She looks pretty. And it looks like her shoes fit this time compared to the other very high spikey heels with a strap around the ankle she once wore. So I give the rest of her outfit a thumbs up. It’s not her best outfit I’ve seen her in, but it looks nice on her. I don’t get the hate for it. And she looks pretty and happy.

I guess Meghan likes buttons too. LOL I don’t have a problem with either Kate or Meghan liking buttons. I didn’t even pay much attention to that until remarked about so much on here.

  82. Bliss 51 says:

I don’t like the blazer and why is she wearing it Melania T. style? I like the dress but it could be shorter and I like the purse. Stilettos on cobblestone, gah!

  83. Mego says:

Except for the blazer on the shoulders I think her look is cute, fresh and youthful. Love the black and white and love the shoes. The Duchess of Cambridge’s matronly fashion choices and hairstyle make me cringe looking at most pictures of her so Meghan is a breath of fresh air to me. The Duchess of Cambridge is classically beautiful but her style does her no favours.

  84. BILLYPILGRIM says:

Dress to casual. Top buttons look like nipples.

Coat looks like somebody, at the last minute, threw it on her shoulders in case she got cold,
shoes too dressy for the dress, hair needs to be pulled back and negative on the crossbody.

Other than that I love it.
    up,

  85. KiddV says:

I like the dress but I’ve seen it before, years ago. I can’t remember where or on who, though.

It looks like the jacket was thrown over her shoulders at the last minute. Not knowing the weather, it could have been cooler than she was expecting, or if it was hot she could have been protecting herself from tan lines. Don’t want tan lines messing up the look of the wedding dress.

  86. Bliss 51 says:

I remember Melania wearing her coat over shoulders like a cape and it looked uncomfortable. That look is only good in black and white movies of yore. Katherine Hepburn in slacks and a camel coat or Carole Lombard in a fitted beaded gown and coat thrown over the shoulders. Everything beautifully tailored and soignee. In the movies, those coats never, nevah slipped off. Only in the movies.

  87. Cher says:

I love the shoes. But, Meghan’s legs are not made for strappy shoes.

  88. NYCTYPE says:

MM is a very beautiful woman.
Actually stunning, she has amazing skin without tons of make up, unlike a Kardashian.
She has this amazing glow, probably eating very very clean and doing organic skin care rather than war paint.
Probably no alcohol or smoking too, lots of water and good hot yoga for clean, healthy pores.
Great hair, I wouldn’t mind, if she would sometimes put in a ponytail, for example at the Invictus function on the field a few days ago, so the wind doesn’t blow it all over the place.
She could also put it half up/half down for certain occasions.
This outfit is a miss for me and I mostly like her style, well except the pants dragging on the floor.
This outfit seems to swallow her, maybe she is losing weight for her wedding.
It’s also too busy, too much going on here, the belt, the buttons, the stripes, the bag and the shoes are too evening for me, heels are too high for daytime charity event.
And the jacket looks silly to me, a nice cashmere or silk black cardigan would have looked more polished and less buttony.

    • Claire says:

Looks are subjective. I don’t find her beautiful or pretty but somewhat attractive. I find she dresses for someone who is tall. She’s short! Maybe 5’2 if that. I like her shoes but they must be killing her feet.

  89. ASHBY says:

I also find her very attractive, lovely skin. She probably smartly invests in excellent top notch skin care, so there is no need for much make-up. Also a very good head of hair. A bit too thin, losing some curves, I see. Sometimes her shoes are too dressy for certain events, this pair is more for evening event and not a daytime one. I like her style, it’s not “style icon” stuff, as it should be for RF member, but more classic and streamlined. But this look is over the top. Making me dizzy.

  90. Jane says:

    Too busy in my opinion.
She is very cute and pretty, but the clothes are not in this pic. I really dislike coats and jackets thrown over the shoulder, I guess KKW likes this look. Either put it on properly or leave it at home. It seems overboard to me with the striped dress, belt, too many buttons, shiny buttons on the jacket, more stripes on her bag, the shoes are too high for daytime and strapped. No clean, simple, classic lines here.

  91. Ashby says:

This is a messy, overworked and over done look. Too much going on here, too busy and too fussy. Clean classic lines with high quality fabrics and good tailoring is all she really needs. It looks try hard and like too much thinking went into this look.
