Pippa Middleton & James Matthews are expecting their first child, she’s due in October

The wedding of Pippa Middleton and James Matthews

When the news came out about Pippa Middleton’s father-in-law David Matthews being under arrest and investigation for raping multiple women, some people wondered if Pippa Middleton would announce a pregnancy to “distract” from the terrible headlines. I thought those people were rather mean, actually – Pippa and Terribly Moderately Wealthy James Matthews were clearly going to try to start a family at some point, and now it seems like Pippa was already two months pregnant when her father-in-law was arrested. Pippa can’t get a break: what should be such a happy announcement is now being framed in the context of her in-law’s shadiness.

Pippa Middleton is pregnant with her first child, the Sun on Sunday can reveal today. The Duchess of Cambridge’s younger sister, 34, and financier husband James Matthews, 42, are said to be overjoyed. They told close family and friends last week after her 12-week scan.

It comes at a difficult time for the family, after James’s dad, David, 74, was accused of rape.

The Duchess of Cambridge “could not have been more delighted” on learning little sister Pippa was pregnant, a friend revealed. Kate, only days away from giving birth to her third child, was the first person after Pippa’s husband, James Matthews, to hear the good news.

A friend said: “When Pippa found out she was pregnant, she was obviously thrilled and utterly overjoyed. Naturally, big sister Kate and parents, Carole and Michael, were the first people she told — James aside — and they could not have been more delighted. It’s been a tough few weeks for the two families, so this has provided some much-needed happiness and light relief.”

The friend added: “Pippa and James have always known they wanted children. They have made the most of their first few months of marriage and felt the time was right to expand their family.”

The baby is due in October.

[From The Sun]

Congrats to them. I’m sure some people will perhaps note the timing for another reason: passive-aggressive announcements/events between the sisters. Just as Kate is about to give birth, Pippa announces her pregnancy. But I’m sort of over that storyline, honestly – it’s clear that Pippa and Kate do adore each other and they have a strong sisterly bond. Plus, I suspect Kate thinks it’s cute that Pippa could ever steal her thunder. Kate is stroking her maternity buttons right now, thinking, “I’m happy for Pips and everything but her kids ain’t gonna be royalty!” In any case, at least the Middleton and Matthews families will have something nice to look forward to this year. It’s not going to be all about criminal trials and multi-jurisdictional rape investigations.

  1. Millennial says:

Around 12-14 weeks is when a large majority people announce, especially for the first baby. No scandal there about timing.

I do feel bad for her that all this drama is happening when she should be enjoying her first pregnancy, planning her nursery, picking names, registering for ridiculous items, etc… what a cloud over a happy moment. Hope she’s enjoying it anyways.

    • Maria says:

Happy for Pippa especially with everything else she has to deal with with the accusations against her father-in-law. She has been papped a few times recently on her bike or walking so she doesn’t seem to be suffering from HG like her sister

      • Grinning mama bear says:

Likely Pippa’s sister didn’t suffer from HG much either. She was just lazy.

      • ol cranky says:

@Grinning mama bear that’s really friggen cold. If you’ve ever had the misfortune of experiencing HG, maybe you wouldn’t be so quick to play Morrissey and make pronouncements about others like this based on your personal opinion of said person instead actual knowledge of the situation

      • phuggi says:

@Grinning mama bear–Kate was actually hospitalized for her HG. I didn’t have HG by any stretch, but my first trimester nausea was a terrible experience to go through, and I wasn’t half as sick as to need actual hospitalization. Who are you to pass blanket statements like these when there’s actual proof to the contrary?

      • notasugarhere says:

There is significant doubt that she had HG. Morning sickness yes, HG no. Her behavior, appearance, and multiple vacation put the lie to HG.

      • Ankhel says:

This. She was supposed to have HG this time too, but she stepped out, 4-5 months pregnant, looking glowing and with obvious all over weight gain. Weight loss is a major symptom of HG. Those saying she wouldn’t have been hospitalised unless she had HG, forgets she’s carrying heirs to the throne. The doctors would rather be safe than sorry.

    • PrincessK says:

Please do remember that by no stretch of the imagination is Pippa royal. She has been made into a ‘celebrity’ to fill a vacuum because Kate Middleton does not really generate much excitement. The arrival of Meghan relegated Pippa, and now this pregnancy is bringing her back.

      • Joannie says:

        You can’t be serious

      • PrincessK says:

        I am totally serious.

      • Hazel says:

Princessk: I actually agree. Pippa’s popularity, such as it is, is an invention of the celebrity media.

      • Aurelia says:

YAWN. Wonder if the baby will take after pippa or the terribly moderately wealthy meerkat.

      • gingersnaps says:

I agree with PrincessK, it’s bizarre how the families of Crown Princess Mary and Queen Letizia and others are (mostly) quiet in the media but the Middletons seemed to be a thirsty bunch.

      • Vee says:

Maybe so, but there is an established tradition of being obsessed with the sisters of established royals or pseudo royals or socialites. Exhibit A: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s sister Lee. The Press has always enjoyed sisters, whether Hiltons or Middletons or Miller sisters…

  2. Roe says:

Well will she keep the baby away from the grandfather? He allegedly abused a family member

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Important question. The allegations and findings should prompt reconsideration of that relationship. And that responsibility is shared with her husband. I hope he puts his children first.

      • Spicecake38 says:

I think the whole Middleton clan are thirsty, and they love the limelight and their royal connections. That said,I think Pippa will be a good mother-Carole,Kate,and Pippa seem very close and for all of their fame seeking and social climbing they will stick together and be supportive of Pippa throughout her pregnancy.I am happy for her and hope she has an easy pregnancy and delivers a beautiful healthy babe.

    • Milla says:

It’s an awful that she has to think about that while carrying a baby… I hope the press isn’t gonna continue to use her name cos she’s pregnant and she is not responsible for her father in law…

      • Bettyrose says:

IKR? I was so disgusted by the first headline about this yesterday. It’s unreasonably cruel to link her pregnancy and this monster’s actions in sensational headlines.

  3. Miss Gloss says:

Is it just me or could her husband pass for 50? He looks so old.

    • TaniaOG says:

I think they both look so old. I find this is a common look with the more elite athletes. They just don’t have an ounce of fat on them. Between that and outdoor training, it’s aging.

      • minx says:

They do look older. I wonder if pregnancy will flatter Pippa the way it does Kate. A few extra pounds won’t hurt.

      • Spicecake38 says:

I too think pregnancy will flatter her and give her a softer, prettier look.

      • Eleonor says:

        Same here.
I’ve got two friends who are into sport like ultramarathon level, ultra trail and God knows every activity implying a crazy fitness schedule and between the sun (even with sunscreen) and the total absence of fat they both look older.

      • Nic919 says:

Years of smoking and tanning are also a factor here. Many elites athletes don’t look like this and have zero body fat.

      • Merritt says:

You cannot have zero body fat and be alive. Elite athletes have low body fat and maintain it at a healthy level or they are going to risk organ damage.

      • Nic919 says:

The point was that elite athletes don’t all look older than their years despite having minimal body fat. There is more at play, including smoking and excessive tanning for years.

    • Dbw says:

He looks sooooo old! And he’s only 42! That’s nothing. At 50 he will look like he’s pushing 70!

  4. Grinning mama bear says:

Announcing a pregancy at three monthes is kind of “standard” because the highest risk of miscarriage is before the three-monthes-date. Also if Pippa announces this now then:
    1. she won’t steal thunder from Markle/Harry cause it is too early
    2. she won’t steal thunder from Kate’s birth which will be in a few weeks (?)

    • Cynical Ann says:

I’m bemused that she has to “announce” it at all. She’s a private citizen, not a member of the Royal family.

      • TheOriginalMia says:

This. There’s no need for her to announce.

      • Bettyrose says:

The Kardashians are private citizens too.

      • Nancy says:

        Ha! Good response Bettyrose….

      • TheOriginalMia says:

@Bettyrose…yes, they are, but they are also reality TV stars with a multimillion dollar business. While I could care less about their reproductive choices, they actually do something in the entertainment industry to warrant interest in their lives.

      • Megan says:

Lee Radizwill is a private person, but her status as Jackie’s sister made her a celebrity. Same is true for Pippa, who is also a socialite, writer (albeit not a terribly successful one), and charity patron. It’s perfectly reasonable for her to announce her pregnancy.

      • PrincessK says:

Exactly, people must be reminded that Pippa is not royal. The press just wanted to generate stories and it is seems Pippa and her family were happy to go along with making themselves available for things that would get media attention. Royal in laws usually do as much as possible to keep out of the limelight unlike the Middleton’s.

      • Bettyrose says:

        Originalmia-

Kim K and Pippa M both had the good fortune to be related to big names in media. They both hustled to capitalize on their famous family names, and they’ve both kept high enough profiles to stay relevant in media. One has a reality show, the other doesn’t, but they’re both media names. If the headlines had referred to Pippa’s baby as royal, that would be incorrect, but banking on her name to generate clicks is legitimate business. She’s a globally known name, if for no other reason than being the punchline of Pippa Tips.

      • Cynical Ann says:

@Megan-Lee Radziwell was married to a prince-so no, not a private citizen.

      • Enny says:

NOT ANNOUNCE?!? How could they not announce such terribly moderately interesting news?!? You monsters! 😝

  5. sally says:

I really don’t see how Kate pulled focus from Pippa at the latter’s wedding. She had to wrangle kids and wore a boring dress.

    • LAK says:

The video feed of the event was extremely entertaining. Kate definitely tried to pull focus. And she only wrangled her own kids and completely ignored the rest.

      • sally says:

We can agree to disagree on this one. The other kids were older than hers, and perhaps she was told that she only needed to wrangler hers. I watched the video of the wedding and again saw nothing to suggest pulling focus.

      • Bridget says:

Personally, I think that whole “Kate was trying to pull focus” is built upon a logical fallacy in the first place: that it’s easy to outshine a bride on her wedding day, barring an extreme circumstance.

      • Joannie says:

LAK you’re imagining things because of your bias. its pretty obvious.

      • xena says:

Funny how differently we all see this few scenes … I actually expected Kate to look after all the children due to the headlines and was totally irked because she completely ignored all the other children and fussed with her own which was not necessary because they all behaved themselves. She was the one who created the stress.
But I also thought, the choice of pictures with Pippa and James and Kate lurking in the background was a bit mean. There must have been nicer ones.

      • PrincessK says:

Did anybody here actually attend the wedding? We are judging all of this on the basis of a few pictures of Kate scolding George for misbehaving.

      • Hazel says:

Yep, seemed to me she only paid attention to her own kids.

      • notasugarhere says:

With LAK on this. Grabbing her daughter by the shoulders, turning her forcibly, and posing her for the paps? Yep, wrangling her kids for PR.

      • Aurelia says:

Anybody remember kate looking like a total fish wife losing her shit at lil georgie when he copied the older kids and threw his flowers out too soon on the ground?

Kate was mugging in every photo too. Agreed, defo trying to pull focus. I would not have agreed to be a so called wrangler if I was kate. Somebody else could have done it. It took attention away from pippa.

    • spidee!!! says:

@ PrincessK – very well said, and tabloid/internet sites chose their photos to suit their agenda.

    • Luisa says:

Seriously am so bewildered by all the Kate was trying to pull focus from Pippa on her wedding day talk! I just don’t see that at all, and I’m glad a lot of people feel the same way. Some of the narratives about Kate on this site are so ridiculous. And people being so certain! Like Lak claiming to know exactly what is going on, in her usual know-it-all manner lol. Honey, just because you declare that something is “definitely” the case, doesn’t make it so.

  6. Amide says:

I don’t see how it can be seen as conspiratorial.😐
Pippa is in her mid-thirties, it’s normal that she and her hubby would want to start a family soon. I’m actually surprised it didn’t happen sooner.😉

  7. MousieBrown says:

Hers is one of my favorite wedding gowns, and she looked so happy.

  8. cee says:

How awful to be experiencing the joys of a first pregnancy with her FIL cloud hanging over them. Especially since one of the alleged victims is a family member!

Hope all goes well for Pips.

  9. Maria says:

Spencer Matthew’s fiancée is also pregnant so what to do with the grandfather unless he is found innocent or they drop the case altogether might be a problem.

  10. aquarius64 says:

Dragging the FIL’s criminal problems to her pregnancy announcement is pretty low for the tabloids, but it’s the tabloids. I’m surprised Pippa hasn’t been accused of using the pregnancy to distract from the ugly headlines.

  11. Citresse says:

It’s nice baby Cambridge 3 and Pippa’s baby will be close in age and then if H&M have honeymoon baby the three of them may grow up be quite close.

    • Bethany F says:

Pippa is not royal. Why would Harry & Meghan’s child be close to Pippa & James’ child? That is a tenuous link at best and wishful fan fiction.

Pippa and Kate’s children will be cousins, of course, but Pippa and Harry’s children will have no familial link. Harry and Meghan have their own family and friends with children, they will not need to glom onto Harry’s brother’s in-laws

  12. DesertReal says:

Congrats to the parents of a soon-to-be goofy kid.

  13. Jayna says:

Aw, the cousins will grow up playing together. I love that. Congratulations to the happy couple. Pippa has such a beautiful first name, Phillipa. I don’t know why she only goes by her nickname Pippa. That’s just me, though.

    • Spicecake38 says:

On another thread the other day, people were speculating Cambridge baby 3 names.I too, love Phillipa ,and for all of those wondering if Philip will be part of the baby’s name if it’s a boy,I would think it quite lovely if a girl could have Phillipa as part of her name therefore honoring prince Phillip and Pippa.I think Phillipa sounds both strong and elegant, and definitely not overused.

  14. Isa says:

So many people I know (and in this case know of) due in October.
I was too, but we lost our baby boy last week. So many babies I’m going to get to watch grow up that would be the same age of mine.
    Congrats to the happy couple.

    • Jegede says:

      I’m truly so sorry.

      Best Wishes.

    • Spicecake38 says:

Isa thirteen years ago I lost our second,a boy very late in my pregnancy-20 weeks. I have health problems and it happened.Sometimes I still cry, think about what he would be like today, and think what a wonderful big sister our daughter would have been to him.For us it wasn’t meant to be,and only time dulls the hurt.I am sure what you are experiencing is so fresh and new where you alter between loss and shock.Don’t blame yourself, and allow yourself to feel all the feelings that arise.I wish you healing blessings, and peace as you go forward 💔

    • Spicecake38 says:

Also just wanted to say I’ll be thinking of you often even though we don’t know one another.

      • Jegede says:

        That’s beautiful Spicecake38.

      • Isa says:

Thank you so much. My son wanted a younger brother so badly. I keep looking at my other kids and thinking this baby will never get to grow up like them.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Speaking to women that’s been through this has helped so much, but I’m sorry that you’ve had the same experience.

    • minx says:

Isa and Spicecake, so sorry. Take care.

    • Sophia's side eye says:

Oh, Isa, I’m so sorry for your loss, and you as well, spicecake. My daughter would be 28 this year, but I lost her at 20 weeks. It still hurts. Best wishes to all the mommies who lost their precious babies. I’ve heard that some call them rainbow babies. ❤️💛💚💙💜

    • PrincessK says:

Very sorry Isa. All of this baby talk must be difficult for you.

    • Catherine says:

Happened to me almost 40 years ago. I still mentally mark her birthday

    • imqrious2 says:

      Isa and Spicecake, my heart goes out to you both. Sending big virtual hugs to you both, and wishing you healing thoughts. {{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}

      • Isa says:

I’m glad to hear that you always remember. One of my fears is that I’ll forget. I don’t easily remember birthdays. So watching these babies grow up will be a bittersweet reminder.

    • raptor says:

Isa, spicecake, and Catherine, I’m so sorry. I am thinking of you and your precious babies, and hope that comfort finds you.

    • Samantha says:

I’m so sorry for your loss and I hope you don’t give up hope. I had a miscarriage last January and then I had my rainbow this January seven weeks early. The amazing thing was the first day that we really got to hold him was the anniversary of my miscarriage. I had woken up that morning crying for the baby we lost and it was like God knew what I needed. I’ll be praying for you and I hope you get a rainbow.

  15. Bettyrose says:

Surely Pippa wants multiple children, as is the norm in her family. Now is the time to start on that. With these combined families, there will never be perfect timing that doesn’t overlap with other family events, and so what? That’s life. But gawd poor Pippa to be mentioned alongside that monster.

    • Sophia's side eye says:

Exactly, I feel bad for her. Hopefully it’s not affecting her negatively, and she will enjoy this pregnancy. Tabloid fiction is far from real life.

  16. Egla says:

Congrats to her and yes she doesn’t have to wait for others people lives to live hers. Her father in law can go in and out of court for years as far as we know and her sister is having her third by now so no big of a deal. She has has been very low key as far as I can tell for a long time and as it should be as she is not a public figure.
Her situation reminds me of a friend of mine that as soon as she got pregnant all hell broke loose in her and her husbands family and she was told by her mother in law to not tell anybody as it would seem as a slap in the face to others. She was 6 moths pregnant and showing when she started talking about that and everybody at work was “No sh$t”. Some people went as far as to tell her that while others were having problems she was actually managing to have s$x with her husband. Long story but let me tell you at 7 months she blocked 20 people out of her life and when she gave birth she just called her mother and me to let us know (I had to notify work so her maternity leave would kick in not because I was special or something lol).

  17. happy girl says:

I’m really happy for Pippa and her husband. Such a happy time.

  18. Amanda says:

Unfortunate timing with the scandal with her Father-in law , but there was nothing she could do about it. I’m almost certain she didn’t know about what he did until it became public, and by then she was probably already pregnant.

    • Bettyrose says:

Even if she had known he was being investigated, what was she to do? Put her own life on hold because her FiL is a disgusting human? Unless anyone believes Pippa concealed knowledge of his intent to hurt someone, Pippa’s name and pregnancy have zero relevance. (And to be clear, I’m not defending Pippa specifically as much as anyone dragged unfairly into someone else’s evil sphere.)

  19. SJhere says:

IMO, look they are newlyweds and having their first baby together…
Congratulations and I wish them well. The same as I would any new parents to be.

Pippa is a once-removed from the BRF, and she is a private citizen. I hope folks leave her alone, her FIL may be an awful person but she is not responsible for his actions.

I’m tired of the Paps trying to keep stirring crap between all the Royals.
I read celeb gossip to get a little break from the ugliness of everyday life, a baby on the way is good news, leave it at that.

  20. Rae says:

I’m more excited about this baby than Cambridge #3.

I’ve always liked Pippa, so I’m happy to hear that’s she got some good news. Wishing her a healthy, problem free, pregnancy.

  21. L84Tea says:

I really do wish them well and hope they can enjoy this time. I experienced something similar during my second pregnancy–a situation beyond my control that made the general mood very difficult to just enjoy and be happy during the last few months–and it wasn’t nearly as bad as her circumstances, which tells me the stress for them would be pretty intense. 🙁

  22. raincoaster says:

I had no idea she was that rexy for her wedding. She looks like an inpatient!
