The trailer for Crazy Rich Asians looks like nothing that would typically drive me to go see a movie in theatre, but I’ll probably go see it just because POC-led films always have the unfair burden of having to do well for others to get greenlit.

    • NameChange says:

The books were really good. And yes, I’ll see it three times on the opening weekend just to bump up its numbers. 😀

      • Veronica S. says:

I did hear the book is really good, which surprised me when I glanced through the synopsis to see what it was about. I have to get around to reading it eventually. The movie looks *fun,* just not from a genre that gets me out the door for a theatre run.

      • Imqrious2 says:

I LOVED the books, esp. the first. Easy, fun read…perfect for a plane/trip beach… I’ve been so looking forward to this movie since it was announced. And casting Constance Wu…YAY! She is fabulous! Can’t wait!

      • Anners says:

Yes yes yes!!!! Love the books (especially the first) and it’s just pure poppy goodness done way over the top super rich styles. Can’t wait to see it!

      • Liberty says:

Agreed. Loved the books, rec to me by a friend who was born and raised in Singapore. And will see it in a theatre to bump numbers too.

    • LT says:

And Michelle Yeoh! Love her in everything she’s ever done.

  2. Lucy says:

So sad and unexpected, Avicii’s death. He did look quite unwell in his last public appearances but still, 28 is way too young to die. Plus, he was very talented. May he rest in peace.

  3. Nicegirl says:

I’m all in for the Crazy Rich Asians movie.

  4. Reef says:

Baby girl with the blonde mushroom cut, I can tell is already gonna be annoying.
But I stan Constance Wu so…I’m there.

  5. Zondie says:

    This looks great!!!

  6. Andrea says:

It looks like a generic rom com, it looks like Aloha.

    • booRadley says:

exactly!! and for that reason alone I hope it does well. rom-com doesn’t mean generic white people. I’m hoping this movie will help to sell the idea that anyone can star in a mediocre rom-com, hopefully this one is better than mediocre, but the genre is what it is.

  7. Tiffany :) says:

I want really good things for this film!

  8. Valois says:

So sad about Avicii. It seemed he was doing better after he retired from touring.

  9. Lyla says:

I liked the first book the best out of the three. I’m looking forward to the movie. When I was reading the book though, I was picturing more of a Daniel Henney type for Nick.

    • Alexandria says:

Just sharing that the casting and the books did receive some mixed reactions from the locals here (Singapore and Malaysia).

  10. Menlisa says:

    Avicii was way too young.
    So devastating.

  11. MellyMel says:

I really want this movie to do well. The book is sooo good! Even if the reviews are bad, I’ll see it since it’s a POC rom-com which there are not enough of.

  12. EG says:

I just finished Kwan’s sequel to CRA and it was so enjoyable! I can’t wait to see this.

  13. lenje says:

I’m an Asian, and although the first book is quite entertaining (haven’t read the next books), it also sorta annoyed me. This said, the portrayal of the lifestyle of the Asian riches is pretty much spot on.

  14. Dee Kay says:

CRA movie is LIT!!!!!!! I didn’t like the book (the plot and settings were great but I thought the writing of the characters was so flat and basic), but I knew it would make an excellent film b/c the characters can be sort of stock stereotypes, and the luxurious costumes and food and houses and cars and everything would look fantastic. And they DO!!!!! Excited just to see more Asian American representation onscreen, YAY!!!!

  15. Betsy says:

I think Hillary’s bio can say whatever the hell she wants it to say. That woman gets kicked in the damn teeth no matter what she says, does, looks like, or sounds like. I really like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, but seriously. Hillary has done enough.

  16. adastraperaspera says:

I’ve adored Michelle Yeoh since I watched tons of her Hong Kong films in the 90s. She’s got an incredible screen presence!

  17. Melissa Melissa says:

Chimamanda’s question feels like picking a fight where there should not be any. For me it’s the same as the breastfeeding vs formula debate, or natural birth vs medicated birth, stay-at-home vs working mothers, organic oreos vs real ones in all their chemical glory.

This is when feminism turns sour for me, isn’t the whole point, the whole fight that women should be able to make their own choices? Does it matter, should it matter to us if Hillary Clinton sees herself as a wife and mother first? Shouldn’t she be allowed that choice? I am not fan of the Clintons, but when a woman questions another woman about decisions and choices made in her personal life, in this case personal twitter account, I don’t see how it helps the gender equality battle.

  18. Miasys says:

The books were great, so crossing my fingers that the movie is equally enjoyable.
Regarding Chimamanda- I am kind of over anyone telling me how to be a feminist or how I should identify. I could respect if she told Hillary it bothered her and why, and they had a conversation about it, instead of turning it into another attack. Hillary can say whatever she wants on her Twitter bio, geez.
