Benedict Cumberbatch, Sophie Hunter & a hat premiere ‘Patrick Melrose’

Showtime Limited Series "Patrick Melrose" premiere

Last night was the big LA premiere of Patrick Melrose, the Showtime miniseries starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The Batches must have moved to LA temporarily so that Benedict could promote all of his projects, because this premiere came just a few days after the big Avengers: Infinity War premiere. Remember the days when new photos of Benedict and Sophie Hunter would cause such a flurry that there would be 500+ comments arguing about his hair, when they met, her dress and whether it was all faked? Now that they’ve turned into twins (complete with matching faces which I cannot unsee), the hubbub has died down. I feel like Sophie is trying to revive some controversy with THAT HAT though. That hat is a tragedy.

Meanwhile, did you remember that Benedict was supposed to take part in some kind of Oscar campaign last year? It’s true. He and Michael Shannon starred in The Current War, and it was set to be released last November. The film was held back in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein/Sex-Predator-gate stories because Weinstein was the producer and distributor of The Current War. Cumberbatch was asked about it recently and he said he’s not disappointed about the film not being released yet. He said: “If it takes us not releasing our film for a couple of years just to be rid of that toxicity, I’m fine with that. To step back and be as far removed from that influence as possible, both as filmmaker and as human being.”

I’m also including photos of Allison Williams and Jennifer Jason Leigh. JJL plays Melrose’s mother, I believe. I don’t know who Allison plays, but IMDB says that she’s only in one episode.

Allison Williams looks like Joan Crawford in drag.
All that weight loss has aged her. Egads!

    • maxine ducamp says:

That’s a bit harsh. I agree that weight loss can be aging and she could use a few pounds, but I love her dress!

      • Apalapa says:

I would put that dress of Allison Williams on Meghan Markle! It is perfect for her.
The orange one would be nice on Kate or Meghan. I am brilliant I know. Ta and Ta.

I will leave my resume with poor KEEN Jason.

  2. Miss Melissa says:

Is JJL even ten years older than Cumberbatch? And she is playing his mother?

ETA, 14 years. Hollywood doesn’t change.

    • Siobhan says:

i think she’s playing his mother when he was a boy! I stand to be corrected though. If I’m proved wrong then Hollywood does it again!!

    • Caro says:

Jennifer is playing the mother of the young Patrick – BC has a good record of playing opposite women his own age

    • Kaye says:

Only when the character’s a boy.

  3. Lala says:

Sophie’s hat…nor outfit bothers me…but then, I rocked that hat for YEARS back in the day…me and “Boy George” of course…..anytime I can see JJL on screen…is a GOOD TIME! So I will be watching this.

    • KNy says:

I had that hat in the 2nd grade (this was the 90s) and I LOVED it so no shade from me. I wish I still had it because I had a freaking adult-sized head in the 2nd grade (I was a walking lollipop) and it would probably still fit me.

    • Jag says:

Yes, I was thinking that if it were brown, it could be my Simon Le Bon hat from Hungry Like The Wolf! (Duran Duran) I love that hat. lol

  4. Digital Unicorn says:

Me likey Sophie’s outfit, it is very 80s but one of the better 80s looks if there ever was any.

  5. Slowsnow says:

Sophie Hunter looks really good. I’m all for bringing back stuff from the 80’s as long as it looks this good. And I love hats anyway so I’m biased.

I cannot wait for this show! The early buzz seems to indicate that this might win quite a few Emmys (or at the very least a nomination for Benedict) and the trailers look fabulous. The source material is simply amazing too. Edward St Aubyn is a genius and my favorite modern author. You really can’t go wrong with adapting these books – the acerbic wit will always win over the crowd.
Also, I’m really liking Sophie’s choice of clothes these days. They are interesting but classy at the same time. I respect the fact that she doesn’t resort to excessively revealing outfits. Sure these might be considered ‘safe’ choices but they look lovely on her. The hat goes well with the outfit too.

Unfortunately it is on Sky Atlantic and I can’t get that with my Virgin Media package.

  8. EscapedConvent says:

I think Sophie is wearing Cumby’s hat, or he has one just like it. It looked dumb on him too.

  9. Wellsie says:

The hat is an interesting choice but it’s the belt that bothers me. JJL’s dress is totally doing it for me though. Love it.

  10. Kaye says:

Early word from critics is that this is amazing and everyone is excellent in it, particularly BC.

He’s got my respect with his production company. All three top positions in it are now held by women. That’s true action and what we need if the industry is going to change.

    • Rumi says:

Yes getting past the rhetoric and into action. Thank you for bringing that up.
Oh Benedict and Shannon, I’m looking forward to it, I like his response to the release of the film. As much I despise Weinstein, the company produced some of my all time favourite movies.
Love her outfit especially the hat!

  11. aerohead21 says:

Oh girl no…go back to that metallic dress you were wearing.

  12. Anare says:

Hate when people wear hats way back on their head like that. It looks so cutsie.

  13. Mei says:

Love love love Allison’s dress. That is where the ‘sheer’-style anything should go to, no further. Black on the collar and cuffs makes it.
