Serena Williams premieres HBO’s ‘Being Serena’ with help from the Hadid sisters

HBO New York Premiere of 'Being Serena'

Here are some photos from last night’s premiere of HBO’s Being Serena, the latest documentary about Serena Williams. I guess I had forgotten that Serena is really down with the whole Hadid crew? Because Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid came out to support her and it was very cute. It was like… sister love, I think. I can just imagine Gigi and Bella growing up and watching and admiring Serena and Venus. Venus was there too, as was Serena’s husband Alexis Ohanian (Sr.). Junior stayed at home! I don’t really care for Serena’s dress here, but it looks like she’s lost weight just in the past month and a half, since we last saw her compete. Either that or Nike has been doing her dirty with some unflattering tennis kits (which is also a possibility).

Serena has taken part in a number of documentaries and docu-series over the years, and I don’t hate it. In years past, she could be a bit cryptic about her personal life, but I think agreeing to documentaries is her way of allowing fans into her world, showing them her highs and lows, but on her terms. Being Serena is about her pregnancy and her current attempt at a comeback. She’s already played two tournaments, Indian Wells and Miami, and for 2018, she’s only got two match wins and two losses. She’s scheduled to play in Madrid in a few weeks, and then Rome probably, and then the French Open and I think people are expecting her to be in good form for Wimbledon.

Weeks ago, I read a tennis-commentary piece about whether we should be worried about the fact that Serena appears to be trying to “play her way” back into form. As in, she’s going into tournaments knowing that she’ll probably lose early, but she just wants to get a few matches in and see if her competitive streak sparks. I half-believe that, but I also believe she really wants to win and she’s mad at herself if she doesn’t win. Anyway… I’m looking forward to seeing how she looks on clay, and I do have high hopes for her on grass.

I’ll watch this. That Vogue piece with her, Alexis, and baby really got me into her (more than I was before). I’m always thrilled to see people of all colors and genders adoring a woman of color – not just a subset of the population. THIS is how society should look at all its role models.

I like that this site covers people other celeb sites don’t! It’s nice to read and learn about a wide variety of people!

  3. Catherine says:

Serena Williams is a national treasure. I’ve been lucky to see her play live, and see her win Wimbledon. She embodies the American spirit of competition, athletics, drive, intelligence and beauty. Never bet against Serena, she is so deseptive in her play and is a damn serial killer on the court. STAN ALL DAY 🙌🏼👑💖

  4. Anniefannie says:

She and Venus donated $1,000,000 to the
Tennis Association to support scholarships for woman. They’re remarkably, unbelievably talented in their sport but it’s their support and ambassadorship of tennis that makes me a total fan-girl!

  5. Wal says:

She’s a beautiful woman, I just wish she’d use a lip liner and those eyebrows are not good.

    • Jussie says:

I don’t know what she’s thinking with those eyebrows. The shape and size is unflattering enough, and then the weird glossy finish just draws even more attention.

      • Beth says:

Those eyebrows were what caught my eye immediately. They look like big streaks of shoe polish across her forehead. Pretty woman, but those are horrible

  6. Betty Whoo says:

She and Venus got their lips done. Thats No make-Up, No mam.

    • kittyhawk says:

I thought Serena’s lips looked different in the head shot in the white dress. I hope it was just an illusion caused by the lipstick.

1.) Unshallow comment: She is an incredible athlete, and I happy to see her always on the up and up.

2.) Moderately shallow comment: That is a great dress on her.

2.) Shallow comment: Did she…do something to her lips? What work she’s had done has been relatively minor, so I’m really surprised to see her do something that dramatic. But I’m also really distracted by the makeup job because the artist used way too light of a highlighting shade for the “peak” point of her features.

  8. Magdalin says:

Serena is an amazing woman and athlete and it’s great that this project is being done and promoted.

That being said, she looks SO much better on the court with no make-up. Fresh, natural. She looked great on the recent, what, Vogue cover, with her baby as well.

But here, she looks really harsh, with overly enhanced lips and her left eyebrow looks like it was taped on. Somehow these two cosmetic enhancements actually give way to a more masculine look. She would have been alot better off without them.

Why do perfectly lovely people mess with their faces and appearance?

  9. Yup, Me says:

Yaaaaaay! Serena! I’m rooting for her and looking forward to celebrating her progress as an athlete and mother.

That said- those sleeves- nope. And whoever is doing her makeup doesn’t seem to know how to highlight strong features without making her look like “My FACE has arrived. FACE. Wearing a dress . . . and giving ’em FACE. FACE.”

I’ll be checking out this doc also because Serena is always awesome motivation for me to go hard in the gym.

  10. HannahF says:

I think that Serena is playing her way into shape. However, she is so competitive that although intellectually she understands that there will be lost matches, emotionally she can’t accept anything less than a win.

  11. Ce2495 says:

She is a lovely beautiful lady but those eyebrows are terrible and too glossy. Anyway, I love her so I def wil watch the documentary. She is incredible!
