Halle Berry’s trainer: She ‘has the discipline and athleticism of a 25-year old’

A post shared by Halle Berry (@halleberry) on

We last checked in with Halle Berry’s equally hot trainer, Peter Lee Thomas, about a month ago. It turns out Halle and Peter are launching a health and wellness site called Hallewood, which is up with photos but doesn’t have any content yet. This is a good move for Halle and one that’s consistent with her brand. Peter clearly adores Halle and admires her commitment to fitness. In an interview with People, Peter claims that when he first met Halle he didn’t realize her age (now 51) because she has the “athleticism of a 25 year-old.” She’s also game for whatever he throws her way and he says not all of his clients can handle that.

Thomas, who has been working with Berry for about two years, credits the star’s commitment to health, wellness and workouts for staying in tip-top shape.

“I had no idea what her age was when I met her. I never looked or was interested in that and when I found out I was absolutely shellshocked because she has the discipline and athleticism of a 25-year old,” Thomas tells PEOPLE.

Thomas sought to “challenge” Berry further while using a combination of exercise techniques such as martial arts, boxing, yoga and “a lot of military training [like] the Navy Seals would do.”

“If Halle wasn’t an actress, she would very easily transition into becoming a professional athlete if she was coached the right way,” he says. “She’s also not afraid to experiment and explore and take risks when it comes to fitness because she understands that in order for there to be potential growth and change, she’s going to have to do things that are commonly difficult to do.”

Also key for Berry is the element of surprise.

“She never truly understands what’s going to happen for that morning, for that day,” says Thomas, who trains the actress five days a week. “I bring a constellation of things. That, in itself, is quite challenging because she has to be ready almost on improv. It can break a lot of people, who don’t see the workout the day prior.”

Fitness is my favorite hobby and I love it because it trains you to adapt to whatever life throws your way. When you’re strong and when you challenge your body on a daily basis you just handle things better. Reading this interview makes me wonder if I should splurge on a trainer at some point, but for now I just mix it up with different classes and YouTube workouts. I had a guy a few years ago but he moved away and I never got a new trainer.

Last week Halle talked about the fact that she follows a ketogenic diet, which limits carbs and sugar. She said “I don’t really eat pasta, anything with sugar, it’s very much meat-based. I eat meat, I enjoy chicken and beef and a lot of vegetables.” Halle has type 1 diabetes so sticking to a strict diet is necessary for her condition. While I’m not on board with a keto diet, it’s smart for her to launch a lifestyle site, she’s goals to so many of us.

Here’s a post Halle made with Peter in which she touts the benefits of bone broth. (You can read that caption at the source, it’s long.) I first heard about that from Shailene Woodley and I have a bone from the butcher sitting in the freezer waiting for me to make this.

Halle has another long caption to this Instagram post below in which she talks about the benefits of meditation and describes her practice. You can read that by viewing the original post. I can recommended guided short meditations on YouTube from The Honest Guys and Great Meditation. They really help me relax and focus.

She does look incredible. Wonder what’s in the Tiffany bag?

  2. Ponytail says:

Bone broth ? Stock, then ?

    • Astrid says:

Yes, that bone broth hype pisses me off. It’s soup broth for the love of god. People have been eating this forever!

  3. Slowsnow says:

Celebitchy, if you splurge on a personal trainer, will you also pay him to say to the press that you have the energy of a 25 year old?

    I kid, I kid.

    She does look awesome.

From what I know of T1 Diabetes, a strict diet isn’t at all necessary. Being aware of your highs and lows and when you need to time insulin IS. But isn’t Halle someone who’s tried to say that she’s cured her T1 through diet (which is physically impossible)? She’s in her 50s, she’s avoiding added sugar so she can control her weight.

    • Cate says:

You don’t HAVE to have a strict low-carb diet, but it is much easier to control the disease if you do. A good friend of mine has T1 and while she’s not as strict as what Halle describes she says she has much better luck controlling her blood sugar and not having to use a lot of insulin when she eats a lower-carb paleo style diet. I’m sure needing to control her weight is a powerful extra motivation, but I also don’t doubt that this diet helps Halle control her diabetes and keeps her insulin use minimal (and there are long-term health side effects to using more insulin).

      • Bridget says:

I don’t think that’s correct. We all naturally produce insulin in our bodies. The issue that diabetics have is due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels. THAT’s where the diet comes in, but a keto diet would actually be a bad fit – you’re better off eating whole grains and foods that are low on the glycemic index so your blood sugar is steady.

  5. Red says:

She obviously looks incredibly, but can’t women just look/feel great at any age? I hate that compliments have to be comparative to younger women. She looks great, kicks butt at the gym…but she’s in her 50’s. That’s an accomplishment. She doesn’t have to look 25 because she’s not. Ugh I don’t know if I’m even making sense but it’s a pet peeve.

    • Slowsnow says:

Completely agree. It indulges the fallacy that a 50 year old woman cannot be a kickass athlete. And that past 25 if you are a woman you might as well die as you instantly become ugly, flaccid and weak.

    • Gigi LaMoore says:

He said the discipline and athleticism of a 25 year old, not that she looked 25.

  6. Zondie says:

It doesn’t hurt that she has nice bone structure

  7. Surely Wolfbeak says:

“The discipline of a 25 year old.”

    Still laughing.

  8. BaBaDook says:

As a 25 year old, I’d like to say I read the headline and lolled

  9. isabelle says:

A 25 year old has more discipline than an older person, haha. Sorry but that isn’t most people, most have bad habits when we are young. Really bad habits. Does he realize she has discipline because of her age? Have x10 more discipline at 40 than 25, but more priorities. Also over 40 the body, it takes longer to recover so you need to rediscover how to work out. A 25 year old can walk in do half the work and look “disciplined”. So no knocking being older and not having discipline.
She looks amazing and you can tell she puts a lot of hard work into staying in shape and working on her health.

    • minx says:

This is very true. I was much less disciplined in my twenties, in many ways, because I could get away with it.

  10. Huckle says:

    She’s gorgeous and he’s hot. I hope they’re boning.

  11. Bailie says:

My mom is 58 years old, worked full time most of her life, raised 3 children on her own and works out 5 days a week for many years now.

She is also a very healthy eating vegan for over 40 years, never drinks alcohol or smokes cigarettes.

People never believe her age, she feels and looks incredible.

The oldest her age was guessed at was 40 years old.

  12. Tania says:

Meanwhile here I am and I have the discipline of a 2 year old, and the athleticism of a 1 year old, so beat that Halle!

  13. browniecakes says:

Halle may be part of John Wick 3 with Keanu Reeves.

    • Rumi says:

      Ooooooh I hope that happens!
Physically Halle is my inspiration. She looks fit, strong and beautiful. Not waif thin. I recently started the Keto diet and it’s not easy especially if you love pasta and rice. And I wasn’t aware that fruitsvsd vegetables have alot of carbs too.

  14. Pandy says:

I don’t like his body – it’s too ‘roidy looking. All this talk like she’s ready to enter into combat!
Or things mere mortals cannot accomplish!! She’s doing squats so her @ss looks good in movies. Get a grip. Blow some more smoke up her 25 y o @ss already.

  15. perplexed says:

Maybe he meant she had the discipline of a 25 year-old athlete.

  16. Harryg says:

    Okay good to know.
    What else?

  17. Marianne says:

She’s been in really good shape since the beginning of her career though, which probably makes it easier. Im sure most women her age who are starting to work out/diet will not have her athleticism.
