Oh God, is Kanye West planning to attend Monday night’s Met Gala?!

'China: Through The Looking Glass' Costume Institute Benefit Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

I’m sorry this didn’t even occur to me before now, but OH GOD do you think Kanye West is going to try to attend the Met Gala?? Kanye didn’t go to last year’s Met Gala because he was still in his “less is more” phase post-breakdown. Kim Kardashian attended the 2017 Met Gala solo, and she barely got any attention. But! From 2013-2016, Kim and Kanye attended every Met Gala together, to varying degrees of success. It wouldn’t surprise me if Kim had plans to attend, with or without Kanye. But in the wake of his “slavery was a choice” comments and his general Deplorable-ness, what will Kanye do?

Kanye West won’t be making a trip to the tailor this month. A source close to the Kardashians tells Us Weekly exclusively that the rapper will not attend the 2018 Met Gala on Monday, May 7, with his wife, Kim Kardashian.

“Kanye is definitely not going,” the source insists. A second source tells Us that West had been “all over the place about going,” adding, “One minute he says that he will go. Another, he insists that the album needs more work. Kim just wants to go to the gala and have a great time.“

This will be the second consecutive year that West, 40, skips the annual fashion event in New York City. Last year, he instead opted to relax back in Los Angeles in the wake of his nine-day hospitalization for a mental breakdown the previous November.

[From Us Weekly]

Part of me wants Kanye to go to the Met Gala just so we can hear how everyone reacts to him. I imagine that if he dared to walk the carpet, there would be boos and hisses from the photographers and that he would be shunned by many celebrities. It’s also possible that Anna Wintour doesn’t want him there and she’s told him as much – Wintour has always been Kanye’s champion and apologist, but I get the feeling that she would not want her big event overshadowed by Kanye showing up in a MAGA hat. Wow, the thought of that just made me shudder. Yikes.

As for Kanye’s other enablers… Adidas is sticking with him. For now. I get the feeling that Adidas corporate is just going to wait this out and see if the whole thing blows over. Guess what? It won’t blow over. Kanye is canceled.

Wouldn’t this be Wintour’s last year as she rumored to be leaving Vogue? I’ll bet until Monday we won’t know if he is going or not.

  2. Anastasia says:

Ug, I hope he doesn’t go. Sit your ass home, Kanye.

And in that last pic, WHAT did she scrape through her hair? Motor oil?

    • MagicalDay says:

I’m in between feeling badly for him and everyone as it’s likely he’s in the last blast of a manic upswing. However, he’s causing a wake of destruction this time with his racist rants and attachment to the orange furer. Let’s hope he stays in or just away.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

Have you seen the discussion about all of this being a performance art piece? That this is long planned to see if embracing Trump will move the movement to understanding of others and love. @snowcone on Twitter has a thread.

      • MagicalDay says:

He’s not important enough to “move a movement”. Ugh. His grandiose delusions are symptomatic, but still eye roll worthy. Ugh.

      • Babs says:

What is clearly symptomatic is the rage to disminish Kanye. He might have wasted the potential he had but yes, he is important enough to move anything. Everytime he has an album out it makes 1 in streaming and illegal downloads, and is dissected to bits even by people who don’t listen to him. Everytime he drops a line on twitter it makes a headline. People are here wondering if he will make it to an event while pretending not caring about that man and what he does. A whole effin lot of people cares about Kanye West, what he says, what he does, what his next move will be. What’s delusional is to deny it.

That said, sadly I don’t believe for one second that we are witnessing some kind of performance here.

      • NameChange says:

This is another excuse to give him a pass on his deplorable comments. This is not a performance. He either genuinely believes this or is having some sort of mental health issue.

      • Cberry says:

        @Babs
Having influence among hip hop consumers and entertainment/gossip consumers is not the same as having influence over a cultural/political movement. The later has a much broader reach with a strong sense of purpose and commitment. A real movement is life affirming and life changing. It defines a generation(s) for all of history.

Whereas music fans and those that consume pop culture media and gossip are not reliant as a voter block. Music is important to people, but people aren’t moved to vote in any credible numbers based on their music idols beliefs. Even if they share the same beliefs, they’re not likely to get politically engaged or disengaged based only on their idols views. People get involved in movements because of people in their lives at home, school, work turning them onto what’s happening.

Music stars can help to compliment and to some degree help reinforce a movement’s momentum. But an artist isn’t going to have much effect steering a movement unless the movement is already dying down and fracturing apart (*more than the usual fracturing of diverging views within any movement).

I would think he’d be all over this – another chance to say something stupid in front of lots of press. Everyone would be focused on him waiting for him to stick his foot in his mouth and he knows it. It’s a win/win for him – he gets a ton of free publicity and a chance to whine about how no one understands his dragon blood.

  4. Jag says:

I think he’d go and would wear something completely offensive that he then would try to explain away that we just weren’t avant garde to understand it. But I doubt that Kim would even ride in the same car due to how awful he’s being.

As for the photographers and other people there, not many would talk to him, but I’d doubt that they’d boo him. Certain ones would still be photographed with him, but only those who think they’re teflon, imo.

    • NameChange says:

Maybe he’ll wear a confederate flag and parrot the deplorable talking point about how the war was about a lack of compromise on the North’s part … That’s the only thing left for Kanye to do.

And he’s not canceled. To the contrary, I hear a lot of the younger kids just shrugging and saying they’ll wait for the next iteration of Yeezys to come out before they decide. People are morally bankrupt these days, sad to say.

  5. RBC says:

Here is another thought… If Kanye doesn’t attend the Met Gala then there would be rumours of trouble in his marriage to Kim. Of course that may be good for Kim as everyone would be paying attention to her and asking her about Kanye’s comments. Attend or not, this would still give Kim more attention than last year

  6. KeWest says:

I bet kanye goes and ruins the event.

  7. Smokey says:

I’d forgotten all about his blue contacts phase. Hope he saved them. They’ll really compliment his MAGA hat.

    • Kitten says:

You took the words right out of my mouth!
Man, he’s become such an embarrassment; a total parody.

    • whatWHAT? says:

blue contacts, dyed blond hair, MAGA hat…at least he hasn’t started lightening his skin, a la Stacey Dash.

to paraphrase Tropic Thunder, never go full Aryan, I guess.

    • launicaangelina says:

He also literally shit his pants at that Met Gala. Every time I see the blue contact pics, I remember that.

      • RBC says:

        I remember seeing those pics!

      • Kate says:

I came here just to comment about the poop! HA!

      • Honey says:

how did I never know about this??? I am on this site every day, but I missed this? Kris must be an actually genius because she managed to not make this a bigger story.

    • minx says:

Yeah, the blue contacts look completely natural 🙄.

  8. HK9 says:

Kanye at the Met Gala in this state?? Jesus, get your sandals, this is an emergency.

  9. JennyJazzhands says:

Kim was there last year? What did she wear? I have no memory of her presence.

  10. Babs says:

He’ll go with candace owens and kim will beat his ass in an elevator #SWF

  11. Tw says:

In the end the gala is a fundraiser and it would be sad to cheapen it further. I still think it was classless for Gwyneth Paltrow to make the comments she did a few years ago. It’s not about her and if she enjoyed the party, it’s about raising millions to benefit the Costume Institute.

  12. Virtual Not Actual Me says:

‘Kanye West needs to visit the Alabama Slavery Memorial’

    https://www.truthdig.com/tag/amy-goodman/

  13. lightpurple says:

Won’t be visiting a tailor? As if we’re supposed to believe he visited a tailor for those get-ups he wore in those pictures? Nothing he’s wearing was fitted to him.

  14. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

    Kanye: Zombie Edition
He looks even worse than normal with those stupid light-colored contacts.
Let’s hope he does stay home.

  15. Case says:

There are a lot of things I can’t stand about Kim, but she does have a conscience when it comes to politics and social issues. I actually believes she tries to educate herself on this stuff. With all the nonsense he has been spewing I doubt she’d step on a red carpet with him.

  16. Amelie says:

He’s unstable (this is my opinion fyi) and the media will just profit off of Kanye’s tirades. He isn’t thinking clearly but the Met Gala should make the decision for him and disinvite him if he is invited. I feel sorry for Kanye in the sense that I remember how celebrity news thrived off of Amanda Bynes and Britney Spears’s very public breakdowns. It was VERY clear both women were very unwell (even if people kept saying no one should judge) and the media amplified their trauma. Amanda was so incoherent on Twitter, it was finally clear to everyone it wasn’t an act when she set a fire in some stranger’s driveway. I don’t think Kanye is at that level but he’s already been through a very public breakdown. This is just a sad situation all around. He’s been cancelled to me for a very long time (way before he made any of these recent comments) but it just makes me sad to see a talented artist fall so low. And most of all sorry for his children who will one day be old enough to read all of this online.

    • Fleur says:

I feel the same. Re: his rap music, I’ve never been a fan of his work, and never understood the great fuss over him, the messaging within his music in the past, or his massive, self-deifying ego.

That said, I do think he’s seriously mentally ill and is speaking/fixating on thoughts/delusions that are an outgrowth of that mental illness. I feel sorry for him, and for Kim. I hope he gets the help he needs.

That said, I never understood why Kim would allow him to have so much control over HER image, from how she dresses to how she wears her hair. It’s clear that she loves him, but there seems to be a power imbalance there that surprises me for such a strong minded woman.

  17. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch says:

Working on his album? How long does it take to press delete?

    • me says:

Kim’s in Wyoming with Kanye right now. He’s doing his “final touches”…which probably means he’s doing some new tracks about the recent backlash he’s had.

  18. kate says:

I wonder what he’ll wear if he does go, He wore poop stained pants the last time, maybe this time he’ll wear piss stains. It’ll do double duty homage, both to his BFF’s piss colored rug and his wife’s chief claim to fame.

  19. kellyrae says:

I bet he doesn’t go. I also would put money on a divorce announcement coming soon. Kim got what she wanted, 3 kids same dad, she’s not going to continue to risk her ‘brand’ to support Kanye. I think she’s out and he will spiral further.

  20. Kitten says:

Trump thanked Kanye at the NRA rally in Dallas today, saying that his poll numbers with AA doubled from 11% to 22% because of him. F*ck Kanye.

    • Babs says:

I doubt this is true. The poll numbers I mean.

    • Yasmine says:

I would worry about the 53% of white women who put that monster in office before some fake poll numbers.

    • Jayna says:

While Kanye cozies up to a racist, misogynist president and alt-right Republican commentators, a little Irish band called U2 had their opening night of their tour in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Wednesday night, a state that is a majority Republican state, voting for Trump, and U2 did not shy away from focusing in their art about violence in American schools, racism, white supremacists, on and on. They aren’t even from our country, but love America, the idea of America, and what it should represent. Surprisingly, the audience didn’t boo them. And U2 has a lot of Republican fans.

They had a backdrop to their song One showing kids getting up and putting battle helmets on to go to school, to take dance class, swim, with their parents oblivious to what their children fear every day. It was so pointed and spot on. It’s a commentary on what we are doing to our children, what our society is becoming.

In the beginning of the show they had posters up regarding empowerment for women, etc. They had slogans like used back in their infamous Zoo TV tour in the early ’90s, and this time the mantras on the big screen reflected a post Harvey Weinstein, Me-Too era in America and beyond. It had things important in school, like learning math, etc., and the bottom was the word guns with a line crossed through it.

They did a song and the backdrop was about Charlottesville. Bono revisited the horned character of MacPhisto with a chilling speech on the nature of evil, before going into Acrobat from Achtung Baby, complete with Bono singing: “If you just close your eyes/You can feel the enemy.” Trump anyone? They focus on immigration.

One review said Bono isn’t preachy in this tour or self-important, as he can be at times. He’s angry.

All I have to say is Kanye should be ashamed of himself. A white Irish band is taking on what Trump’s election and presidency is doing to this country, emboldening racist, bigoted, misogynistic behavior. And Kanye is declaring his love for Trump, his dragon brother, etc. It’s so disappointing to see someone like him embracing the scum on the other side.

    • jwoolman says:

Kitten – Of course Trump’s AA supporters doubled. From 1 to 2, approximately…

  21. Berry says:

Did anyone else see a post Kanye later deleted that said that he didn’t identify as black?

  22. me says:

I think Kim and Kanye will be at the Met Gala. She needs publicity and he’s still trying to get more pr for his upcoming albums. Those two never shy away from attention do they?

  23. Annabelle says:

I thought Kanye West was being redubbed General Deplorableness. It fits. I hope he goes to the MET Gala so he can get raw-egged and tomatoed in his forehead.

  24. Jessica says:

He’s likely going. Kim, Kylie, and Kendall have a small role in Ocean’s 8 so they’ll be there to promote themselves and the film.

I just hope the Oceans 8 cast is the focus.
