The theme of the 2018 Met Gala was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and oh my God, was this one of the best themes in the history of the Met Gala. People had so much FUN with it. Some interpretations were very literal – like, people dressed up in New Fashion-Forward Pope Gear – but many people used religious art, gospel, and Catholic imagery to create their own twists on the theme. Katy Perry was one of the more literal-themed people. Katy came dressed as an angel. And it was awesome…? I think it was awesome. This is a custom Versace and on the cream-and-gold carpet, Katy posed like a kneeling (perhaps fallen?) angel. The Versace dress was gold chainmail and her wings spanned six feet… but it looks like more. She almost knocked out her stylist with her wings!

Also in Versace? Gigi Hadid. I don’t hate what Gigi is wearing here, but it’s basically just a pretty dress with no huge connection to the theme. Donatella Versace was one of the co-chairs for the event, so I’m a little bit surprised that more people didn’t go this route – just picking out a pretty Versace dress and calling it a day. Apparently, Gigi’s dress is supposed to look like “stained glass,” like that in a church. Again, I don’t hate it. I just think the reference was a bit oblique.

When I saw Gigi hadid’s dress, I thought of the intricate stained glass windows of catholic cathedrals I visited as child or heard Sunday mass in.
Same. That and the wing motif. It’s a very pretty dress and I think it’s a success as one of the more low key themed dresses. Subtle. Works for me. Hate the hair though.
I agree with both of you. I definitely prefer Gigi’s dress to Katy’s. If I were about three feet taller I’d wear the hell (blasphemy!) out of that gown.
Katy is in full-on try-hard mode which usually causes me to check out entirely, but since it’s the Met Ball it’s the one of the correct places for it. The problem is that the look is just no good. I actually don’t mind the wings – it’s the dress that gets me, the fit of it is all wrong.

Actually Katy Perry didn’t ‘kick out’ the nuns. The nuns and the Archdiocese have been fighting over who has the right to sell the property – one party attempted to sell it to KP the other to another buyer. But you do you with making up a nice little story lol

She ran to the archbishop and promised him a lot of money for the property, they went to court a nun died during said court procession and the nuns got kicked out of the property so that katy can move in.
I take umbridge with a woman who was so adomant to hear yes that she ran to the archbishop to get what she wanted, thus taking sovereignity away from the inhabitants of the house. that effectively took the power away from the nuns to decide how they move out, when and who they want to replace their convent.

Yeah, but the nuns wanted to sell it for very little ($40K) to a woman who made lots of promises. It was alleged at trial that this woman (Hollister) is a con artist who was swindling the elderly nuns. A jury (who heard all the facts) decided the diocese owned the property and that Hollister had acted with malice, awarding the diocese and Perry damages. Perry agreed that the nuns should remain living there as long as they wished. These facts get ignored all the time in favour of the headline grabbing spin. Perry is not the bad guy here, no matter how much people want to believe otherwise.
Only the owner of a property can sell it. The Archdiocese owns it, not the nuns. Perry didn’t run to the archbishop. Keep your umbrage.
Re Katy Perry: it looks like a cheap Miss Universe National costume.
I get the reference so I’m ok with it but the gown is a safe choice and I’m not ok with that. This is one of the greatest themes for a party where you are requested to go all out. Gigi looks good but not WOW AMAZING and that’s that.
Katy Perry brought it but the wings are the best part of this. Everything else is only mediocre which I guess is ok because otherwise people would say its too much. But the angel motif is, to me, boring and over done. On another note–why tf didn’t Gisele Bundchen wear this?!

Just noticing some details now of katy’s ensemble… it all comes together like magic in the pic where she’s kneeling. The way she’s holding her arms across her body, there’s even the slightest hint of bump behind her angelic hands, the fallen angel motif really comes through. When she’s standing… why would the sleeves need to be so long? It looks like someone chopped off her hands! And if she’s pregnant, good for her… but if not? Why is the dress so damn unflattering around her midsection?

Gigi’s subtle take on wings and the theme and the theme are…kind of lackluster to me.
Katy’s take is a more high voltage (and literal) take on it, but as far as fashion goes- it falls flat. Even if she’d worn a piece of draped silk underneath that costume, it would’ve been better than that golden chain Reno escort getup.
I think she’s supposed to be the archangel Michael, who is often portrayed in armour. Just my impression, though. I hope she took the wings off at some point; I can’t imagine they’d be easy to sit in. I can’t decide whether to chuckle or cringe at her outfit. Maybe both?

gawd yes, I canNOT stand her. When my son was just a wee baby, he knew that if we were shopping for groceries and Firework came on over the speakers, we had to MOVE FAST to get the hell outta the store before her braying chorus started. I’d have to come back for my (full) shopping cart after the coast was clear. Also, her style sucks.

I like the drama of the wings, but I can’t get past Katy’s hair like that. To me it screams PTA mom trying to look edgy, and a pixie cut is not flattering on her.
I love the idea of the stained glass and the technique they used to imitate it, but the colors are a little drab if it’s supposed to represent church windows.
I actually thought her hair looked better than usual here. Plus, she’s totally having fun, so it is a win in my book. GH’s dress is gorgeous, but I agree with folks up thread who point out that this is the time to go big and bold

I’ve been coming back to these pictures and looking at it up close…just gorgeous fabric, beautifully sewn.
I think Katy doesn’t pull this look off. She looks too chubby for this ensemble, especially her legs (before you yell at me, she looks normal for a “real life”. Like someone who enjoys food and is not as into exercising as the rest of the Hollywood).

Gigi’s dress absolutely fits the theme, which is Catholic art and artwork. Stained glass is an incredibly important part of that – I also loved the dresses that were inspired by paintings.
Gigi’s dress reminds me more of what i would see at a Renaissance Faire- people dressed up in fairy/woodland outfits – though i think she looks beautiful

I liked Gigi’s dress but I too thought it wasnt on theme until someone pointed out that it was supposed to look like stained glass windows. I took a long second look and while I can kind of see that, I wish they had used more traditional imagery and colors for it. If you have to explain what the theme is then it’s too subtle IMO.
I have several reservations against church/religion but I, too, absolutely loved this theme!! People had fun, were creative, and really brought it!! Katy and Gigi represent two completely different extremes (extravagant, subdued), but I loved them both.
Gigi’s dress is now my favorite after seeing it. It’s beautiful. Katy looks like a dumpster in a dress.

Gigi looks breathtakingly beautiful. The dress is divine, as is her luminous makeup ( the little gold dots below her eyes are subtle and make her look angelic) and I even love her hair, despite two toned-ness of it.
