Zendaya as Joan of Arc in Versace at the Met Gala: dramatic and impressive?

Zendaya somehow manages to pull off the riskiest of looks. She’s a chameleon and she has a skilled stylist, Law Roach, who has helped her stand out at countless events. Roach told Woman’s Wear Daily that the inspiration for this gown came to him in a dream and that he collaborated with Versace’s team. He said “When I knew the theme and Versace, we started the conversation, there were a lot of sketches from Versace and I started thinking about strong women who had a connection to religion. I dreamt of Joan of Arc one night and called Versace and was like, ‘What if we did something to reference Joan of Arc?’ They came back with really, really great sketches.

Shailene Woodley also did Joan of Arc but her Ralph Lauren looked more puffy and quilted. This somehow combines elegance with the flowing train and bell sleeves and strength, with the armoured and riveted shoulders, waistline and collar. The skirt and sleeves look like they’re made of chain mail. I’m so impressed with this gown and this look overall. They even got the hair down.

Dakota Fanning just went with a white Grecian look Miu Miu gown. This is so pretty and her styling is spot on, but I wanted to see more from her.

Do you see Lena Waithe rocking a pride flag as a cape behind Dakota, above? She’s reminding us of the Catholic Church’s stance on homosexuality, which is to declare it sinful and a disorder. They’re not the worst church by any means, Catholics don’t run conversion camps, but they’re not an inclusive religion and they don’t recognize same sex marriages. I just saw Lena in Ready Player One and her career is on fire.

    Zendaya looks exquisite.

I love the hair too- it just works.

    • Rumi says:

She was sheer perfection, that pose on the steps she knew she totally nailed it. The hair was genius.

    • Josephine says:

Yes!! My favorite. So few decent outfits this year, and this one would win even in a group of stellar dresses. So strong, so gorgeous.

    • Carol says:

Zendaya always knocks it out of the park with her style choices. She looks FANTASTIC here!!

    • Pandy says:

Zendaya is one of -if not THE – best dressed. IMHO.

    • what's inside says:

Zendaya’s look is inspiring and she looks fierce.

    • otaku fairy says:

This was one of my favorite looks of the night. The other was the dress Lili (forgot her last name, but she was with Cole Sprouse) wore. Zendaya usually looks great though. She’s another one of my red carpet faves.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I love Zendaya’s look. The shape, the textures, the fit, it’s all perfect.

    • Hazel says:

      Zendaya FTW! Fabulous!🙌

    • Danielle says:

The dress fits the theme, but is also a gorgeous dress. Add in the styling and zendayas confidence and ability to work the dress and it is all perfection.

    • Trashaddict says:

Should have been the lead post for this series.

    • Jag says:

Fantastic and my favorite look of the night!

    • Sunglass Already says:

      Zendaya
This woman has sealed her position as a fashion icon.

  2. Lucy2 says:

Zendaya’s look is AMAZING. It looks like armor but also light and pretty.
    Lena is rocking it.

  3. Baebae says:

Lena is gorgeous af!!!! That face and bone structure cannot be denied. Zendaya nailed it for me.

  4. SKF says:

    Lena is a bloody legend!!!

    • ichsi says:

Lena had the BEST answer to that stupid theme. I don’t know what religion would have to do to be the “worst” religion, but the Catholic church with its centuries of oppression, murder and abuse of power definitely is a strong contender for it.

      • Liberty says:

Oh, hm, maybe a religion that stones women and throws gay people off rooftops and balconies? Would that be a contender?

  5. Kitty says:

Her eyebrows are to die for

  6. Elle says:

Zendaya was my fave of the night.

  7. Slowsnow says:

Zendaya and Lena were really original.
And spot on the theme of the body: Joan of Arc was a woman and as such could not go to war. She also heard god’s voice so her body was the vehicle of rebellion. She was also burned at the stake, which gives me mixed feelings when I see her memory being trivialized.
Lena’s priestess of LGBTQ rights is awesome.

  8. minx says:

    Zendaya was perfect.

  9. Miles says:

Versace was really on point this year. In terms of great dresses that were also on theme. Between this look, Blake’s look, Chadwick’s look and Gigi’s look they were probably my favorite designer this year.

  10. Lexter says:

    Hot damn Dakota is beautiful!

  11. Betsy says:

Zendaya look amazing – I feel like even that hair color was Joan inspired?
Dakota was there. Her powder was not.
Lena’s look is amazing and meaningful and I love it.

    • Ellaus says:

I recognized Jean D’Arc the moment I saw her! The hair, the cut (medieval page boy), and the fierceness of the chainmail like fábric. Generally Jean id portrayed as a straw-brownish blonde but thecut is the same.
Zendaya, Rihanna, Chadwick and Blake really really got the theme of the Ball, enjoyed it and were amazing!

  12. Aang says:

Very literal I guess. She looks great but it seems like cosplay. And the Church is changing parish by parish from the ground up. Our parish is very lgbtq friendly and welcomes same sex couples and trans Catholics to take communion.

    • La says:

That’s awesome! I live in a very Catholic conservative area but I hope we get there eventually! Some of the Jesuit churches around here are relatively progressive but they are too far away from my house for me to attend regularly.

  13. Reef says:

Zendaya’s was my favorite look. Rhianna being a close second.
In an unrelated note: Is Lena in the market for a second wife? Asking for myself.

  14. Lindy says:

Zendaya as joan of arc looks amazing. Dakota fanning’s dress could be a prom dress its soo vanilla boring.

  15. lightpurple says:

Zendaya’s whole look was amazing and she looked gorgeous without it looking at all gimmicky. The skirt is so beautiful. Joan of Arc as fashion icon.

  16. Louise177 says:

Loved Zendaya. I usually don’t like the costume-like outfits but this was a good mix of both. Very original but not odd and laughable.

  17. Lizzie says:

zendaya got the best versace dress in a decade. she looks incredible. law roach is an artist.

  18. Nicole says:

Zendaya just constantly kills it for me. Amazing. Also Tom Holland posted a picture of her and they are so cute *runs away*
The rest of the looks in the post were good if not some of the better ones. Z just wins

    • Lightpurple says:

I think they’re an adorable couple. They’re both so young but I hope they last a while. There does seem to be a trend of Spider-Man co-stars hooking up. I hope they fare better than the previous sets.

  19. Lala says:

Zendaya’s stylist is a GENIUS!!! I’m excited to see her public looks each and every time because I KNOW I am going to be delighted!!! Lena…can do NO WRONG…on or off!!!!

  20. Jess says:

Zendaya had the best look of the night. Lena’s look was also amazing in many ways

  21. OSTONE says:

Zendaya is a contender for best dressed. Her style is exquisite!!

  22. adastraperaspera says:

Wow, Zendaya. What an amazing look! Just breathtaking.

  23. lower-case deb says:

i would think that i am willing to pay money to watch a film inspired by RihRih, Lena Waithe, Cardi B, and Zendaya and their respective costumes… “Pope Priestess Queen and Knight”

  24. Alarmjaguar says:

Oh, I hadn’t seen the back with that train. I love it. My favorite look of the night, though Lena’s was definitely a close second

  25. Lucy says:

Yes and yes. The girl’s an icon, that’s out of discussion. Loved Lena’s statement, too. CH did her well!

  26. ValiantlyVarnished says:

I loved everything about Zenday’s look. But a quick correction: her hair was not styled to look like a helmet. It was styled to resemble Joan of Arc’s hair in famous paintings of her. This was literally what her hair looked like. Which is another reason why I love this look. They spared no detail and went off of actual artwork of Joan.

  27. Carmen says:

Zendaya killed it ten ways from Sunday. Waithe made a very bold statement. Good for her.

    Fanning was boringly pretty IMO.

  28. ninaK says:

Omg, Zendaya was the best hands down. She’s always so interesting at these events cause she doesn’t settle for pretty.

  29. ChillyWilly says:

Zendaya always does it for me. This girl is so young and still runs circles around red carpet vets. Good on Lena! A much needed healthy dose of reality about the Catholic church.

  30. Sage says:

Zendaya was the best dressed of the night!!!

  31. Appalachian says:

Zendaya could wrap herself in a burlap sack and stick her head in a toilet for a swirlie….

She’d still be gorgeous and on point. I just think she’s so pretty and confident looking.

  32. Hazel says:

Zendaya was the best. Oh to be young, thin and 6 feet tall

  33. Gaby says:

Zendaya! OMG beautiful, she nails it every time.

  34. tealily says:

Love love love love Zendaya’s look! Dakota looks so boring. And Lena Waithe just rocks.

  35. Kitten says:

The best. There are other pics out there that really showcase that dress even better than the ones here. Also, Zendaya is giving FACE with every perfect pose. Flawless.

  36. A says:

I’m loving the fact that Zendaya’s stylist was inspired to do a Joan of Arc theme via a dream. How very Joan of Arc! The aesthetic is committed from start to finish, which I appreciate.

I do think the look itself was somewhat underwhelming compared to the other looks on the carpet, which brought the drama. But Joan of Arc is a story that’s dramatic in a profoundly understated way after all. Zendaya is perfect for this, and I love it. I really love it.

Lily Collins looks good, but I thought it was somewhat basic. But she committed to the theme as well, and she looked good, so points for her.

Lena Waithe’s outfit brought a tear to my eye. I know Catholicism is not big on homosexuality, but there’s still so much art and aesthetic created by individuals throughout history who were probably gay (Michelangelo for instance). I talked in another post about how art and creativity flourishes, even in places where people might least expect it. And this is a corner of history that’s one of them. I wish the church would do better for those among us who have been so hurt by it.

  37. serena says:

I frigging loved Zendaya’s look, it’s my favourite up until now!
Dakota Fanning though.. I think she was confused? It’s not a Greek theme girl.

  38. jferber says:

Zendaya is incredibly beautiful and versatile. She kills every look she tries. Loved her in Spider Man.

  39. Gigi LaMoore says:

    The best in my book.

  40. sza says:

There are a few queens of heaven and my Z is one of them Look at this Joan Of arc knights Templar powerhouse beauty. OMG I do worship.

  41. Lady Rain says:

Zendaya was definitely my favorite of the night, with Rihanna a close second.

  42. Boopy says:

What is this chick famous for? Oh yeah, crying racism when trying to buy gift cards with credit cards (which isn’t allowed at most places) and for crying racism when someone said her dreads smelled like weed.

    • Vanessa says:

Zendaya is a actress who has a successful career on the Disney channel she not only started in K.C. Undercover for three years but she also produced the series. Zendaya use her platform to speak up about intolerance that’s the problem with society that you deem her speak up as her crying about her racism as if she making it up .Its pretty clear with your Dismissal tone you didn’t bother to understand where Zendaya was coming for maybe you should educate yourself

      • Boopy says:

But it was a store policy, like it is for several places. There are too many people using stolen credit cards to buy gift cards so that is why she was told no. She is a spoiled brat who thinks because she is famous and was told no, that it is racism. Not everything is about race.

    • MeNina says:

Her braids did not smell of weed Rancic said her hair reminded her of weed so yes that’s racist. And I live near her and yes you can but gift cards at any supermarket with credit cards. She graduated in the independent program of my kids school district and was an absolute sweetheart to all the kids who flocked around her when she’s visit the independent office on campus. She’s a class act so don’t dismiss her like that.

      • Boopy says:

It is a store policy for many places, including where I work at. She cried racism because she thinks because she is famous, she is above the rules. If she had been white, the same would have been said to her.

  43. K says:

Zendaya looks marvelous. Like a warrior angel (or valkyrie.)

Love the rainbow cape and suiting combo…on most people it would look silly, but she’s pulling it off.

Dakota looks very pretty and I tend to really like her stylist’s choices (she put ERW in that cool gilded feather cape), but this is an Oscars or Cannes gown. It’s weak for a costume party where the aforementioned women are dressed like superheroes. And actually, this looks much more like an Elle dress than Dakota’s usual thing. Maybe a last minute switcheroo of dress or sister attending?

  44. Cher says:

Zendaya nailed it. Everyone else should just step aside…
