Why did Scarlett Johansson wear a Marchesa bridesmaid’s dress to the Met Gala?!

Here are some people who didn’t care one bit about the Met Gala theme. Shockingly, one of those people was Scarlett Johansson. Scarlett wore… Marchesa. Yes, that Marchesa. Marchesa designed by Georgina Chapman, who is divorcing Harvey Weinstein. Marchesa’s couture line is struggling, and Chapman is actually looking to change up the whole fashion house and possibly make it more mass-market and less couture. But in the meantime, Scarlett has her back? Although I don’t think wearing a fugly bridesmaid’s dress is really having Georgina’s back. Scarlett also brought her boyfriend Colin Jost. Ugh.

Kylie Jenner also didn’t care about the theme. She just wore this boring Alexander Wang gown in black and tiny little glasses. She came with Travis Scott.

The matriarch of the Kardashian-Jenner clan attended the Met Gala as well. Kris Jenner wore Tommy Hilfiger and this looks so cheap.

Kris Jenner…serving feather duster momager realness…. Oh Kylie? The 90’s called, they want those ridiculous granny glasses back…

    • Maya says:

She looks like an ostrich 😂

    • Imqrious2 says:

Someone on my Twitter feed said she’s dressed as a feather duster to clean up Kanye’s mess 😂😂

I thought Kylie was Yoko Ono at first (and second!) glance!

      • Pandy says:

THAT’S who she looks like – Yoko Ono! What an ugly outfit and what’s happened to her face???? Is she even 21 yet? And I LOVE your twitter feed re Momager’s dress. All that money and these women can’t dress to suit an occasion. Everything is cheap on them.

      • Christin says:

        100 percent Yoko.

  2. Nemo says:

I…actually kind of like ScarJo’s dress.
    *hides in the corner*

    • Lucy2 says:

It’s one of the least bad Marchesas I think. But why wear that now?

    • Mia4s says:

It’s a reasonably pretty but uninspired dress that a million designers have a version of. Versions that are not from a fashion house steeped in a legacy of sexual abuse and harassment that came to light LESS THAN A YEAR ago and that largely remains unresolved. I’m honestly disgusted she would wear this for attention.

      • mmm says:

I don’t know man, Scarlett’s pretty firmly in support of the metoo movement (I know this specifically and personally). HW obviously has some very serious issues, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Chapman was entangled in an abusive relationship of sorts with him. I don’t think wearing marchesa sends out a message of support for HW in any way.

    • Carol says:

I like it too! Kind of reminds me of a 1940s debutant dress, but whatever. What I dont like is scarjo’s hair

    • Trashaddict says:

The color is great on her. I like it.

    • Siiiigh says:

Why would we punish a woman for a man’s transgressions? This dress is beautiful, and I’m glad her hair is looking better.

  3. minx says:

Kris Jenner thinks a nose can never be too small. Hers looks ridiculous.

    • Grapefruit says:

LOL. So true. I’m also shocked that they were approved by Wintour to be there. The only one I’m not shocked by is the model sister whatshername. But the rest? Shocked. Maybe I’m missing it.

      • Brandy Alexander says:

They’re all there every year. Why would Anna disapprove of them this year?

      • MissMarierose says:

@Brandy: There was an article after last year’s Met where a bunch of people were caught smoking and taking selfies in the bathroom that said Wintour was going to clear out the Kardashians and other low grade social media celebrities from the 2018 guest list.
        I guess that didn’t happen.

    • holly hobby says:

Looks like she got cheek implants too? She looks really different – not in a good way either.

    • Josephine says:

Her whole look – I burst out laughing. No grace or class with that bunch, though, so not sure why I’m surprised.

This seems like the worst Met Gala to date. Almost everyone looks so cheap and boring. Very few standouts.

  4. MostlyMegan says:

I hate Scarlet’s hair and dress. It’s one thing to go brunette, it’s another thing entirely to have the same hairstyle as Laura Bush. The rest of them look desperate. I guess it’s useless to wish the Kardashian clan would just fade into obscurity.

    • Esmom says:

Lol @ Laura Bush. I kinda like the color but the style strikes me as someone in the early stages of growing out a pixie. If that’s the case, I feel her pain.

And I’m 100% with you about the K clan. I looked at these photos of them with a bit of despair.

      • Rose says:

Yup growing out a pixie is hell 🙁
My hair looked like crap for two years, this is no lie , lol .

    • Grapefruit says:

Totally agree. She looks better blonde with the cute blunt bob she had in Avengers. This style and color ages her. I agree with Esmom in that she might be growing it out but honey can afford some extensions or something.

    • holly hobby says:

Yep she is finally growing out her hair. It will take awhile.

  5. Jussie says:

I think it’s time to just accept Scarlett has bad taste across all aspects of her life.

    • JustBitchy says:

Jost was a playah-as much as any guy could be at Harvard- she’s going to chew him up and spit him out. Remember the scarjo days with Sean Penn? Now a comedy writer. Instead of #PoorsJason it’s #PoorColin even if he was douchey in college

    • Kitten says:

I feel like she has to be the hotter one in the relationship.

    • Ada says:

THIS. Horribly boring and ugly dress, the blandest, smuggest date, a hairdo that looks like a suburban mom birthed a poo emoji, AND the bizarro choice to wear Marchesa?? Scarjo needs her mojo back.

  6. mia girl says:

Is Scarlett’s dress supposed to signify the blood of original sin or something? I’m trying to understand how it fits to theme.

    • stephka says:

I think you’re on the right track — something about blood/wine. I think it works for that reason.

    • Bridget says:

I figured that it’s a Renaissance inspired style.

    • grizzled says:

Maybe she’s in a bridesmaid dress that looks like water to wine in reference to Jesus at the wedding in Cana. Maybe she just thought it was pretty and couldn’t be bothered with a theme.

      • The Hench says:

Putting aside the whole Marchesa thing ( which requires quite a lot of metaphorical heavy lifting in itself) my biggest issue with Scarlett’s dress is that the paler colour at the bottom makes it look as though she is vanishing Avenger style from the feet up. Another five minutes and she will have completely disappeared…

      • Carrie1 says:

Yeah, the white bottom makes me think she’s a ghost floating around which is kind of cool… Holy Ghost doused in wine maybe? Dunno. I’m not catholic, avoid religion etc.

    • Uglyartwork says:

      Like a tampon?

  7. Maum says:

I don’t mind the Marchesa too much but the hair is so…. blah.

Kylie’s boyfriend appears to have raided Admiral Hux’s wardrobe.

    • Erinn says:

YESSS. I got MAJOR star wars vibes from him.

I actually almost bought a jacket at winners the other day – that I really didn’t need – just because it reminded me of star wars. But not as on the nose as Travis’ look hahaha.

  8. Miles says:

It’s one thing to not show up on theme and actually look amazing. It’s another thing to not show up on theme and then wear a basic tragic mess. The people who do the latter shouldn’t be invited back. This was one of my favorite Met Galas because so many folks showed up on theme/actually went all in with the craziness of the Gala and then you have folks like Scarjo and the Kardashians (all of them) sticking out for the wrong reasons. Should have just stayed at home to be honest.

  9. QueenB says:

Ugh. Georgina profited directly from Harveys reign of terror. I dont care if she knew all the details. She specifically married him for his contacts to push her terrible fashion on starlets who didnt have the power to say no. She always knew they wouldnt just pick her clothes by her own merit, only because of Harvey.
I canceled Scarlett Johansson after the whole Soda Stream controversy so this isnt surprising.

    • Maria F. says:

i agree. This is not about his sexual harressment, but about the fact that he bullied actresses into wearing her clothes. And that at least she knew and tolerated.

    • Betsy says:

So… condemn her to rot? Let her business collapse?

      • Mia4s says:

If her business was anything worthwhile she wouldn’t have had to marry a pig and have him bully and harass actresses into wearing her clothes. She was nothing without the monster. That’s a legacy of Marchesa. Georgina is trash and that’s the legacy Scarlett is choosing to celebrate. She really is useless.

      • Kitten says:

Yet Scarlett STILL chose to work with Georgina, even though we know that Harvey isn’t in a position of power anymore.

Is the seemingly impossible true? Maybe these women genuinely like Marchesa.

      • Sherry says:

        @Mia4s – +1000

@Kitten – Do we know he has no power? My first thought was, “Does Harvey have some kind of tape of Scarlett he’s threatening to have ‘hacked’ to get her wear this crappolla of a dress?”

Just because Harvey isn’t with Miramax anymore, doesn’t mean he’s powerless.

      • Kitten says:

Eh. I’m more of an Occam’s Razor gal. The easiest, most logical answer is usually the correct one.
Given Scarlett’s problematic past, I think she simply liked the gown and didn’t GAF about what kind of a message it sent. Typical of her and no suspension of disbelief is required to accept it.

      • tracking says:

        Agree with Kitten. Ugh.

    • Clare says:

Yep, Johanson has a history of aligning herself to really shitty people. I mean, if Oxfam are publicly cutting ties with you, you should probably reconsider your choices.

You know that saying – when someone shows you who they are, believe them? Johanson has shown time again again that she is a crappy person sooo…I’ll believe her. Cancelled.

    • Rina says:

Here’s an on BBC about the controversy involving Scarlett:

  10. Lexter says:

Kylie’s fake over inflated bust looks sad and saggy. Don’t get enormous fake tatas and then have a baby, folks!

    • Silent Star says:

From day one Kylie’s implants have looked middle aged. I don’t get why you’d pay good money to look like you’ve spent twenty years as the village wetnurse!

  11. Slowsnow says:

Is Kylie trying to prove gravity?

    • Kitten says:

LOL….you might wanna hide before large-breasted come out in droves to lecture you. 😉

Kylie and Kendall didn’t even try. This is what we mean by “It Factor”. They are young and (arguably) beautiful and they have money and fame already. No excuses for this nonsense. Kendall is a f*cking MODEL FFS. They should be bringing the daring costumes and embracing the potentially dramatic theme but instead they show up in these Wet Seal-looking cut-out dress and jumpsuit. They didn’t make brave choices because they are too bland to pull it off.

      • Veronica S. says:

Sadly, this is true. Gravity is not the friend of the naturally big-breasted. U_U

      • Kitten says:

She has great breasts but the top part of that outfit isn’t doing right by them. Her boobs deserve better.

      • Veronica S. says:

Considering hers are surgically crafted, that’s even more of a strike against the dress. It’s actively pulling them down.

      • Slowsnow says:

OOOps 😬 I obviously talking about the poorly tailored gown though. Same with Selena. Both women have gorgeous bodies, even if surgically enhanced.

      • Veronica S. says:

Nah, your comment was fine. Natural breasts sit in a tear drop shape. A dress has to be cut to properly accommodate that. It’s a failure of the design not to acknowledge that reality, which is why Selena and Kylie look droopy – the dress is pulling the eye down lower on the bust than it actually sits. Kylie’s dress is even making her stomach look weirdly convex.

  12. Ally says:

That dress is probably leftovers from the collection(s) that got cancelled in the wake of Weinstein’s disgrace.

  13. Betsy says:

Scarlett’s dress is fine, especially if the wine/blood theme is what she was going for.
Kylie…. strapless dresses are challenging to wear, especially if you’re newly post partum.

  14. Nicole says:

This post should be called Basic.

  15. Becks says:

What I like about Scarlett’s dress is how well it works with the floor, lol. The train blends into the floor and the red matches the red tiles.

But when the best thing you can say about a dress is how well it works with the floor…..haha.

  16. CadiC says:

Biggest takeaway for me scrolling through all the Met Gala posts is how B/C list of an event this has become. I know Anna Wintour is controlling over all the invitees, makes me wonder if there are a a whole lot more No than Yes RSVPs the last couple of years and this is the best she could get. Also read yesterday where costs have gone up and money back to the Met is decreasing from this event.

    • stinky says:

When people like Demi Lovato are in attendance, you can bet I’d be RSVPing with a big fat “Hell no”. It jumped the shark long ago. The exclusivity of it was the point.

    • Lynnie says:

Old money does not like to mix with new money especially when the new money is as tacky as the Kardashians. I’m sure many aren’t feeling the need to donate/attend anymore especially when it’s getting to the point that anyone can attend it seems

    • what's inside says:

+10,000. It screams B list and C list with a few Ds for filler.

    • Carrie1 says:

I watched the Cannes arrivals and opening red carpet today. Wayyyyyy more star power and far more interesting. This gala carpet was boring and try hard in comparison I’m sad to say.

  17. KLO says:

I personally low key love Scarletts dress. I dont like all the detailing but it with the coloring it looks like a bloody sheet to me, like the sheet Jesus was buried in, maybe? Or maybe I am being too generous. Anyone with me?

  18. SM says:

As I look through the looks that have nothing to do with the theme, I start to believe when asked about thinks like rumours of abuse or sexual missconduct, working with Woody, etc. They sometimes answer that they don’t know anything. There are just oblivious people who do not care. They may have heard you have to put on a dress for MET gala but don’t bother finding out anything alse. As for Scarlett, this dress is bad as it is, the fact that it’s Marchesa makes it even worse. I have do doubt that Georgina was comlicit, there is no way she hasn’t heard the rumours and decided not to question it as long as she her self could milk that cow for profit ans self advancement.

  19. Jayna says:

I actually really like Scarlett’s gown, and I like the unique way she went at the theme with it. I have no problem with her wearing Marchesa. The problem is this gown isn’t all that flattering on Scarlett. I think it would look great on someone taller like Amal, with her dark hair and skin tone.

    And her hair was awful.

  20. Anastasia says:

Did y’all see Scar-Jo from the side? Holy hell, that dress made her look like a huge sausage (her torso). And damn, that haircut and color ages her. Just…I don’t know what’s going on with her.

I’m not even going to comment on the others. Too basic.

  21. Case says:

It drives me crazy when celebs don’t bother with the theme.

    • minx says:

Same. If you don’t want to do an all-out Rihanna or SJP look you can still be more low key but true to the theme. There are endless ways to do that, we’re seeing some of them. Otherwise don’t bother.

  22. Veronica S. says:

I will say the gradient from the white to the dark maroon is exquisitely done, and that does give it a sense of “ascension” to the look, but yes. It’s definitely a miss on the theme.

  23. Spring says:

Agreed–I think SJ looks fine; not everyone’s going to go big or wear a color I’m drawn to. I also don’t get the “ugh” after Colin Jost’s name; it seems like a gratuitous swipe at gainfully employed and, AFAIK, decent guy. If “ugh” were after Kris Jenner’s name, I’d be all in, both for that dress & especially for being a mom-pimp.

  24. justcrimmles says:

She looks like a ghost rising out of the floor. As for the rest, Kylie’s makes no sense (she looks like she raided Lisa Lopes’ wardrobe) Kris like she couldn’t pick one terrible theme and had to use them all.

  25. LaraK says:

What’s the deal with Jost? Is he bad? Boring?
I’ve never heard of the dude except the occasional SNL clip but nothing personal

  26. Anabe says:

If you didn’t believe ScarJo is basic af, take a look at that dress. And that boyfriend. That’s all the proof you need.

  27. DiligentDiva says:

The bigger problem is Scarjo considers herself a feminist and spoke at the woman’s march. She’s already on shaky ground with feminist and doesn’t need the association with Harvey Weinstein considering she won’t denounce Woody Allen. It’s just a stupid PR move to wear this dress.

  28. Rachel in August says:

I actually like Travis Scott’s look. Kylie, on the other hand is what? Twenty years old? That bust on her makes her look like a tired, saggy-boobed middle-aged housewife from the head to the waist. The rest is all just fat injections. Her outfit is out of place and hideous. And I can’t believe I’m saying this but Kim’s dress was the only one amongst her family that remotely represented the theme. A little less tit showing and it would’ve been actually nice. And her waistline? I’d love to have seen the liposuction bill for that, lol.

  29. Philo says:

Not only the dress- but why the mom hair ?

  30. emma peel says:

These days, Colin Jost IS the most interesting aspect of Scarlett. Without him she’s just the margarine to his white bread.

  31. elle says:

Bummed to find Kartrashian stuff in this post – I purposely avoid anything Kardashian/Jenner/West. This click is for Scarjo/Marchesa.

The gown has an interesting effect – like she’s in the process of materializing or disappearing. Not sure whether or not I like it, though. There’s something immature about it.

  32. HeyThere! says:

Kylie looks bad here. Scarlett’s dress is not my jam. That is all.

  33. Joh says:

Isn’t that the dress that Lucy and Ethel both bought and refused to return?

  34. sza says:

As inspiring as a pair of sweats. i mean..pretty dress but COME ON EILEEN!!!!!!!!

  35. At says:

I see Deepika in the back , lol
