Mindy Kaling wore a literal crown to the Met Gala: queen realness or not so much?

Here’s my feeling about Mindy Kaling: she just recently had a baby, she loves super-feminine princess vibes, she loves tiaras and crowns and she probably has no idea about Catholic stuff. She’s a Hindu! So this was a Hindu’s interpretation of the Catholic theme. The Vassilis Zoulais gown looks retro and cute and it has nothing to do with the theme, really. But the crown? The crown is likely an allusion to papal something, or something she saw in whatever Catholic artwork. And that’s fine. I get it. My criticism is that she should have gotten the crown made to sit lower on her head, because it just looks weird “sitting up” that high. The crown was made by Pericles Kondylatos, just FYI.

The Olsen twins!! They are dressed as monks, the kinds of monks who suck on prunes and smoke cigs. Ashley is wearing Paco Rabanne and Mary-Kate is wearing The Row. Bless them.

Emilia Clarke in Dolce & Gabbana. I was a little bit surprised that we didn’t see more D&G on the carpet, because their clothing has so many Catholic-imagery influences. But Dolce and Gabbana are garbage people, so maybe that’s why. I don’t hate this on Emilia – she looks fine. Whatever!

Michael B Jordan in Givenchy. I don’t get it, but I’m glad he came out for the gala! Also: Donald Glover was at the gala too and they posed together.

Her crown looks so weird, like clipart or something.

    • Anguishedcorn says:

      Perfect description!

    • C says:

What’s wrong with her arms? They look weird.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I can’t get over how horribly Mindy’s straps are digging into her shoulders. Thick straps like that shouldn’t be so tight that they dig into your flesh. I don’t know if the cape was super heavy or if the shoulder-to-waist measurement was off, but it looks painful.

      • lisa says:

This is worst dress Mindy has ever worn. What’s up with the armpit slugs? Don’t these people look in the mirror before walking out the door?

      • C says:

        @Tiffany 🙂 you’re right! that shouldn’t be so tight!!!!

    • MagicalDay says:

In antiquity paintings, the crown kind of “floats” above heads- I like that she played on the lack of prospective from early religious art.

      • Taxi says:

Her float is lopsided & she’s wearing it sideways. The highest point should be in front. It’s a “miss Mindy.”

    • Siiiigh says:

      So bad. So, so bad.

  2. Amy says:

Some Orthodox religions incorporate crowns into their weddings, maybe it was a nod to that?

    • Hannah says:

Which Orthodox religions incorporate crowns made of jewels?

      • Jen says:

I was raised Byzantine Catholic and we had these really tacky red velvet crowns encrusted with jewels at weddings – kinda like in the 2nd photo down: https://parma.org/marriage

      • Asiyah says:

        @Jen

Forgive me my ignorance, is Byzantine Catholic a part of Orthodoxy or a part of mainstream Catholicism? Again, please forgive my ignorance, as I mean no disrespect. It’s just I never heard the term “Byzantine Catholic” before.

      • Nicky says:

Crowns are part of eastern orthodox church wedding ceremony in Eastern and Southern Europe: Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, etc. In some communities, crowns are just golden headband with cross on top, and in some tacky golden and red velvet crowns with fake diamonds, pearls and icons of saints and Christ, especially in Eastern countries 🙂

      • Genessee says:

Hi Asiyah, I’m not Jen, but I found this explanation online that pretty much nails it:

“When most people think of the “Catholic Church,” they are thinking of the Roman Catholic Church. However, the Catholic Church is in fact very diversified. It is a little known fact that there are many Catholic Churches in union with the Bishop of Rome, commonly referred to as the pope. There are six principle — or main — rites used in the Catholic Church: Alexandrian, Armenian, Byzantine, East Syrian, Latin and West Syrian.”

      • ItsTooEarly says:

One of my aunts is Russian or Ukrainian and the Orthodox wedding service was ridiculously long (she fainted twice) and part of it, the best man and maid of honor had to follow the marrying couple in a circle around the altar holding crowns above their heads. What makes it funny is that my aunt and uncle are both over 6ft and their attendants were decidedly not.

      • Asiyah says:

Thank you, Gennessee. That’s what I thought. I was afraid that googling it would lead to a wide range of misinformation.

  3. Jussie says:

Mindy’s look is somehow weird yet painfully boring.

I like that Emilia at least did some fun makeup. This was a great theme for some experimental makeup looks but almost everyone played it totally safe.

  4. Kitten says:

Wow Ariana looks so gorgeous. I’m not sure how thematic the dress is but good lord it is lovely. The colors look incredible on her skin tone.
I love Mindy but NO. David’s Bridal white satin: no. Black elbow-length gloves: no. Ridiculous crown barely balancing on her head: NO. Just so many NOs. I think her makeup looks nice but that’s about the only compliment I can give here.

Michael B Jordan looks so handsome. The suit is a bit tight but it doesn’t bother me. Reminds me of his shirtless scenes in Black Panther which is never a bad thing 😉

    • Lightpurple says:

The theme is based on Vatican art and the print is a copy of the most famous Vatican artwork. On theme

      • Kitten says:

Ah ok! Scrolled back up and zoomed in and now I see it. What an incredible dress….

      • Lightpurple says:

This whole thing is making me want to skip work and rush over to the Gardner for the Fra Angelico exhibit.

      • Kitten says:

My BF still hasn’t been to the ISG Museum. I told him it’s an absolute MUST for him to experience. We’ll probably do that and the MFA sometime this month.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

      But. The. Bow.

Is she a six year old???

      • Sigh... says:

I thought I was the only one irked by that bow!

The dress is magnificent, and she was posing FOH THE GAWDS, but my oonnnnnly gripe is that bow. So many beautiful ways they could’ve wrapped/draped that material, but being infantized was/is her “go to,” so…I guess…

      • Kitten says:

I thought it was a nod to the bows that she always wears in her hair–that “Lolita” signature style of hers lol.
Anyway, I don’t mind it in that I feel like she was trying to be true to herself while maintaining the Met Gala theme.

      • Snowflake says:

She annoys me with that style of “lolita” dress she always does.

    • Renee says:

Yes Ariana’s look is amazing. The color is great on her.

Michael B. Jordan looks great no matter what (or how little) he wears. He is so sexy.

    • Grant says:

I LOVE Ariana’s gown and I kind of like the bow? I feel like she fully committed to the theme whilst throwing a bit of her own signature style into the mix. We all know girlfriend loves a ponytail! She knocked it out of the park.

      • Kitten says:

It’s weird because you would think a big dress like that would overwhelm her tiny stature but she carried it off with confidence.

      • AnneC says:

The bow gave me some nun vibes. She looked great.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I feel bad for Mindy. She is totally down to wear colors and prints. This is just a generic, ill-fitting mess. The design itself is so basic and boring. And then the construction, wtf! Those shoulder straps should NOT be digging into her flesh like that! It looks painful.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Is anyone else surprised the cast of Ocean’s 8 didn’t turn this into more of a promo event? It ties in with the plot of their movie, so I’d think they might have come together, coordinated outfits, etc.

  5. T.Fanty says:

I get that MBJ is hot, etc., but the man has no idea how to pose. He always sticks his head way back and gives himself three more chins than he needs to have.

  6. Red says:

Ariana Grande was one of the best looks of the night. She looked amazing and obviously was part of the theme. I’ll never get over how different Mary Kate and Ashley look now. I was OBSESSED with them as a kid and I still love them, but what happened to their faces?!

    • Carmen says:

Ariana looked wonderful but she should have lost the bow and gone for a headpiece instead.

  7. Lala says:

I long for the “too tight suit” phase on men to…disappear!!!!! Why is it that the ONLY time Emilia impresses me fashion-wise is on GOT?!?! Mindy and that crown? No…it’s too big…and it looks awkward….Ariana looks angelic!

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I despise the tight leg pant in this trend.

    • minx says:

Yes, please! If you’re not a big guy a tight suit makes you look twerpy. If you ARE a big guy you look like ten pounds of baloney in a five pound bag. Bad either way.

  8. broodytrudy says:

Y’all know that I am an Olsens forever stan and I’m dying over MK’s outfit. I would wear that all the time. Witchy mystic catholic realness over there. They look incredible every year.

    • Ada says:

I aways want everything they’re wearing! Their formalwear looks dramatic and comfy at the same time. I’m imagining that they have a magical treasure chest of heirlooms and historical artifacts somewhere and they just pull stuff out of it and remix – kind of like the vampires in Only Lovers Left Alive, which is my life aesthetic in general.

      • Hrefna says:

Oh yes, totally with you on the OLLA fixation, and Ashley (she is the one in the warm toned gown, right?)’s gown is the one look I’ve seen that I would love to wear myself. Sized up a LOT. It’s so beautiful! Maybe she could have added a halo headpiece to fit the theme a bit better, but it really is gorgeous as stands.

  9. Morning Coffee says:

I love, love, LOVE Ariana’s look. Wow.

  10. Ann Carter says:

    A swing and a miss.
    Bless her.
    She tried.

  11. HK9 says:

See, there’s potential here, but to pull off that crown, she’d have to add hair extensions so that there would be hair inside the crown and push the crown slightly back on her head. If the dress were a little more Lacrezia Borgeas and a little less Vera Wang we might have something.

  12. ValiantlyVarnished says:

Lol to Mindy being Hindu and not knowing about Catholicism and Catholic themes. Mindy is American she was raised in America. She grew up in a predominantly white town. I am Muslim and was born and raised in America in a large city and I could whip out a Catholic-themed look with no problem lol. Her look is just lazy.

I can’t stand Ariana Grande but her look was one of my faves. That dress is stunning. Emilia Clarke is such a beautiful woman but that blonde hair and makeup looked terrible on her. The dress was pretty and on theme.

    • Sigh... says:

Wasn’t Kaling raised in Cambridge? And even if she managed to miss all the catholic ppl, symbolism, churches and the like, she’s in Unholywood, she couldn’t get a little help on this…? Google’s not a thing where she’s from or at? Crowns are prominent in Catholic imagery, but I agree, like others in attendance, it’s a case of not feeling the theme, but wanting to be seen.

      • ValiantlyVarnished says:

Yup. Which has a sizeable Catholic population. And I agree. A stylist could have helped her- just like stylist helped everyone else on their looks. The dress doesnt even fit her nicely. It looks like an off the rack prom dress.

      • Bridget says:

Um, she’s wearing a Greek designer and the crown is intended to evoke Greek Orthodox imagery.

    • Asiyah says:

      Excellent point, Valiant.

    • ValiantlyVarnished says:

@Bridget that’s great. Too bad her look is so poorly executed that it has to literally be explaines in order for people to “get it”. Greek designer or not – the dress is boring and ill-fitting. And the crown doesn’t fit her head either.

      • Bridget says:

Um, I’m not the one suggesting that she use Google to learn about Catholicism. You guys can like what you want.

  13. Moxie Remon says:

MBJ is actually wearing Off- White.

  14. Splinter says:

There are a lot of images of Mary with a crown, google it. Like this: https://goo.gl/images/krf4Dk
So this was not “hindu” of her to chose a crown, but I must say that looks like a very cheap one.

    • Misery Fox says:

I was going to comment the same thing! The crown is often even perched weirdly on Mary’s head, like in the picture you linked to.

I actually like the idea of the crown but since she didn’t follow through on the rest of the look (which I understand, not wanting to look like the actual virgin Mary) and now it looks like she didn’t follow the theme to anyone who doesn’t know the inspiration behind it (and doesn’t Google it).

  15. Veronica S. says:

Ariana is the only one who gets any credit from me. Everybody else is…boring.

Mary Kate looks HAGGARD, though. The contrast with her sister is just mind-blowing. (They’re only 31!) I really hope she hasn’t relapsed with her ED. They’re such awful, oppressive disorders to have.

  16. Chaine says:

Crown is a no, on her and most of the people that did crowns. Just makes them look like they’re wearing a bad Halloween costume, not like fashion. Plus, that crown bears no relationship whatsoever to the rest of her outfit. It’s very random.

  17. Bridget says:

Mindy’s wearing an Orthodox crown. She’s wearing a Greek designer, it’s not that hard to make that connection. It has nothing to do with her being Hindu.

  18. Anastasia says:

The crown makes it look as if Mindy is about to fly away.

Wouldn’t Hindu fashion be a great theme? God, the colors! BUT I fear it would involve culture appropriation.

    • Tan says:

It would, but Catholic art is so popular and look what came out.
Everyone will probabr do a Heidi Klum and blackface up Kali and call her demon Goddess and be done with it,

  19. Ellie66 says:

Mary-Kate looks like she needs a fresh soul 😂 seriously she looks rough.

  20. Rose says:

Ariana always looks the same no matter what right? Pretty but always the same .

    • otaku fairy says:

True. This dress was a creative choice though. I’m starting to like this hair color on her, but her natural, curly, almost-black hair would be best. Even if she wanted her hair curly in a ponytail, that would be an improvement over the straight ridiculously long one she’s had for years.

  21. smee says:

Mindy’s dress is so rumpled at the seams – crappy sewing or poorly steamed? Ice Blue isn’t really her color, but I love the indigo blue gloves. The crown is incredible on it’s own – it looks good on her and she obviously loves it.

    DONALD GLOVER!!!!

  22. Darla says:

IMO Ariana Grande had one of the best looks of the night. Loved it.

    • savu says:

YES!! She was my best-dressed for sure. It was so unique and not over-the-top, not mostly missing the theme: just right. Loved it!

  23. Sage says:

    Adriana looks like a doll.
Mindy tweaked her face too much but I do like the crown.

  24. jess1632 says:

Michael is wearing Off White. He and I apparently wear the same belt. He’s so f**king gorgeous

  25. Alexandria says:

I kind of like how crazy and unreal that crown looks.

    • Hazel says:

      Me, too! It’s a kid’s dress-up crown & I like the humor behind it!
I hope it wasn’t heavy like a real crown, though, because between that & the over-tight bodice she must have been in serious pain for quite a few hours.

  26. emma peel says:

Whichever Olsen twin is wearing black (I don’t know one from the other) looks amazing.

  27. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Emilia Clarke’s look is amazeballs. Even the makeup (which I don’t like for anything else other than it looks relevant to the theme).

I like MK’s dress, but all I can think of when I see her anywhere is “bowls filled with cigarettes for guests at her wedding reception.” I can see said effects of all that smoking, and it’s a shame. She’s so young. Their faces are so different.

Mindy’s crown – no idea how they got it to stay on her head. It looks painful. In the pic furthest away, the crown looks crazy. Closer up, it looks better.

Ariana’s dress is beautiful, and I like the veil in back.

The guys…well, I don’t get their attire regarding the theme, but they’re cuties.

  28. Philo says:

Karling was one that made me laugh out loud. I had to go and find another source of photos becauseI was convinced that someone had just pasted that crown in a photo onto her head. But nope – that’s what she wore. Very odd.
Those poor Olsen girls – especially the one that always looks a step away from death. What the hell went wrong there? Other than some of the obvious?
Emilia looked lovely – not sure about that pink blusher though.
Ariana’s dress was stunning. Absolutely gorgeous – I just wish she had the personality to give it that extra bit of life.

  29. Happy21 says:

Mindy’s crown looks like a snap chat addition or something on my computer screen, just odd.
MBJ is hot. He can wear whatever he wants.
Ugh. It pains me to say this because I loathe Ariana Grande but besides the awful bow, her dress looks gorgeous. I really can’t stand her ‘posing’ though.

  30. Pandy says:

Blah, they are all dull to me. Who invited Arianna?

  31. Grinning mama bear says:

    Mindy Kaling
Nope. That dress is too small and too tight upstairs. She is a beautiful women in an interesting-cute way of beautiful But that dress just doesn’t get it.

    Emilia Clarke
Yep, D&G know what they are doing. Grand dress. But why the reddish make up?

    Ariana Grande
Looks like somebody tries to restaurate the ceiling of the Sixtinian Chapel and some of the beige scaffolding came down. And the colouring is too weak for Ariana’s colouring. And the posing .. Girl, you are wearing classic fashion and not 90ies pop fashion.

  32. bitchy architect says:

I love Mindy but NOOOOOO. And what has she done to her face? Has she done something to her nose in addition to the lip injection? Whyyyy. (insert whine here) She was so stunning just as she was….
I think Emilia looks amazing – the best I’ve seen her look.

  33. Lilly says:

As I looked through details last night, I quick clicked through many, but stopped on Mindy (among others) and I adored this look.

  34. Cee says:

Some people forget that for a while Catholicism and Royalty was interlinked. To me she’s channeling an over the top Catholic Queen. Dramatic AF and so at home at the Met Gala.

  35. Quita says:

Mindy Kaling is usually a fashion fail. She needs a new stylist. She also has that weird armpit fat thing going on with that dress. Ariana Grande looked amazing!

  36. Jag says:

Mindy’s dress is cut horribly and doesn’t look good. She’s beautiful, but it does her no favors. Yes, the crown should be sitting more on her head, too, imo.

Ariana looks the best she ever has. Everyone else looks nice.
