Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive in Cannes: doily realness or just beautiful?

71st annual Cannes Film Festival

Wow, the Cannes Film Festival started and I was completely caught off-guard! Usually Cannes starts on a Wednesday, right? Right. So they started a day early, and they started just a day after the Met Gala. That’s a quick turnaround for fashionistas! Thankfully, we’re going to have lots of fun photos from Cannes this year: Cate Blanchett is the Cannes jury president. Other jurors include Ava DuVernay, Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux. It’s going to be fun, I’m telling you. Here is Cate at the Cannes opening night premiere of Everybody Knows. She was one of the best-dressed at the premiere in this beautifully constructed Armani Privé gown. Love her or hate her, Cate knows how to fashion. (Also: GAH, HER EARRINGS, I WANT THEM.)

Julianne Moore, on the other hand, sometimes doesn’t know how to “fashion.” I love her to pieces too, so it pains me every time she wanders around wearing a sad sack dress. Thankfully, I don’t completely hate this Givenchy gown on her. Would I have chosen this for her? No. But she looks good. I was going to criticize the updo, but upon closer inspection, I love this hairstyle, especially with the earrings.

Léa Seydoux in Louis Vuitton. Lord knows I think Nicolas Ghesquiere has lost the thread, but my only real beef with this gown is that the skirt should have been lined. The granny panties-under-a-sheer-skirt are just so… tired.

Georgia May Jagger is a model now. She’s very pretty but it’s going to take me a while before I really embrace her as a model-actress-whatever. She wore an incredibly boring Twinset gown in boring basic black. I mean, if you look closely, the gown is well-constructed. But she doesn’t stand out at all.

Fan Bingbing in Ali Karoui Haute Couture. It’s weird and she stood out on the carpet, so props to her. Do you like the ruffled tiers? I do not.

    Those earrings stole the show!

  2. Josephine says:

Fan Bingbing always looks good. The dress is odd but oddly intriguing as well. The color is so refreshing but I can’t imagine too many people who could pull it off.

Julianne looks . . . appropriate? She looks regal and like she belongs at Cannes, so I’m all for it.

    • Honest B says:

The dress with ruffles makes her look like one of those toilet roll dolls (or do they only exist in Australia?)

      • Carrie says:

@Honest B – no, my grandmother in New York also had one of those ruffly things!

      • Lightpurple says:

They exist here and people filled Ivanka Trump’s twitter feed with pictures of them after the State dinner last month because that’s exactly what she looked like.

      • AnnaKist says:

I’m Australian, and married a Kiwi. His mother and all his aunts had them in various locations in En Zed. All pastel ruffles, except for the rebel aunt, who had one that she could stack two loo rolls under, making it a tall dunny dolly. And hers was black and red. I got along so well with that aunt…

      • ravynrobyn says:

My grandma was a real rebel! She made hers with VARIEGATED (sp??) yarn. Pinks, blues. Wish I had one of those damn dolls now. Still have a few of her handmade afghans which I treasure. Nice memories!

    • Your Mom says:

I see stacks of green coffee filters.

  3. JAC says:

Didn’t she wear the same dress, or a very similar one to an award show a few years ago?

Did Fan Bingbing have a lot of plastic surgery or something? There is just something off about her face.

  4. Steph says:

    I don’t give a f*ck about Cate, moving on…

    • laulau says:

Cate had that surgery that causes people to have an odd intensity to their eyes I think. Not a great choice for an actor.

I do love that she re-wore a gown as I think we should all embrace a more responsible consumerism.

    • Lady D says:

I see a oily pedophile protector.

  5. SM says:

The Blanchet looks like a godess. Too bad that recent thoughts of hers on metoo and sexual assault somehow prevents me from typing “she is the godess”, but maybe she will correct that in the future. I feel exactly the same about Julianne Moore, she is so beautiful to me, but she consistently wears bad clothes. So I am releaved this look is not as bad.

  6. lightpurple says:

Cate’s dress is really pretty and those earrings are spectacular.

Julianne looks fantastic. I was expecting disaster as she is so often a miss but this dress is stunning on her and those earrings are great.

Fan BingBing ‘s look is colorful and fun. It looks like the silver is worked through the tiers.

Lea, just no, and Georgia model is there just to model.

    • KB says:

Completely agree about Julianne. She looks great.

      • tegteg says:

I don’t think that color is flattering on Julianne. Also, she seems to really have an affinity for FEATHERS. I feel like every other (fugly) dress she wears has feathers. Love her though!

  7. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

I am a little disappointed in Fan Bingbing as this dress is just ok. She usually hits it out of the park. It is the beginning of the festival so maybe she has other chances to do better.

I actually really like Julianne’s dress. She normally looks like crap but this dress is well constructed and compliments her well.

Cate is in a nice black dress with great earings, nothing more nothing less.

Lea needs to get out of her Vuitton contract. I would have said that Nicolas needs to go back to Balenciaga but I like the current regime there. He needs new inspiration.

  8. Chaine says:

    Julianne looks amazing IMO.

  9. Yeahright says:

Boring for Kate. She usually brings it!

  10. minx says:

This is one of Julianne’s best looks, ever.

    • Kate says:

Agree! So clean and well fitted. Fresh hair too!

    • lucy2 says:

I agree. I really like her, but usually don’t care for her fashion choices. This one is perfect on her though.
      Cate’s look is good too.
      The Jagger girl looks bored.
Fan Bingbing’s dress looks like something my grandmother would have made for one of her dolls.

  11. Anare says:

Julianne’s gown could have walked the met gala. Giving me cardinal vibes. Don’t think she looks good in red.

  12. Elna says:

Ummmm, Georgia has been a model for a LONG time.

    • Jayna says:

Right? The “now” threw me also.

    • MellyMel says:

Exactly! Like since she and I both were teenagers.

    • amyston says:

This was my thought, too. “Wait. Has she been something other than a model before now?!?” No, she hasn’t. The internet states that she’s been a model since 2008 when she was 16-years-old.

    • Suzanne says:

That’s what I was going to say! Where has whoever posted that…been for the last five years or more. Perhaps its just that they didn’t recognize her without her signature gap between her two front teeth… showing. She is a knock out though…

  13. Lucy says:

Loved CB’s gown back in 2014, still love it now. How cool it is that she repeated it, right?

    • Jessica says:

Hopefully it’ll become a trend for actresses and models to repeat really nice gowns.

  14. Veronica says:

Cate is elevating that gown. It’s delicately beautiful, but it definitely has a “funerary” feel to it. I’m actually digging Julianne Moore’s gown more, which is…a rare turn of events if there ever was one.

Fan Bing Bing’s (god her name is so fun and happy sounding to say aloud) is the only person who can wear that dress without making me roll my eyes, mainly because that “princess” look is her go-to style.

  15. Rumi says:

LV is consistently bad unlike Armani Prive. Julianne looks beautiful. I love the colour combo of Fan’s dress but the skirt is terrible. She’s so petite why all that volume and fabric

  16. MellyMel says:

Cate and Julianne look fantastic. I love when redheads wear red!

  17. Div says:

Seriously, what happened to Nicolas? I didn’t always love his work at Balenciaga but I could appreciate it. However, his work at LV is consistently ugly, boring, and derivative. I criticize Dior and Chanel a lot but at least both houses still manage to put out mostly decent gowns and sometimes great ones.

Julianne looks great. I’ve always liked simple, clean dresses with good lines.

  18. K says:

    beautiful

  19. Violet says:

Julianne takes it for sheer elegance.

  20. Meh says:

Cate looks like Laura Prepon in these photos!
