Kristen Stewart in Chanel at Cannes Opening Night: delicately lovely or just meh?

71st annual Cannes Film Festival

Kristen Stewart is on the Cannes Film Festival jury this year. Take that, Twihards! Twihards wanted to keep K-Stew in her little Bella-Swan-box, but she said nuh-uh to that. As soon as the Twilight franchise was over, she stopped dating dudes, shaved her head and started doing weird indie films. And it worked. She won a Cesar Award and now France loves her, and they invite her to sit on the jury for their most prestigious film festival. K-Stew wore Chanel for the opening night premiere and ceremony. I’ve said before that I don’t believe Kristen’s brand-ambassadorship with Chanel is a good fit, and this dress is a good example why. Sure, she takes it to a goth/cool-girl level with the hair, but this dress just doesn’t look RIGHT on her.

Penélope Cruz also wore Chanel to the opening night premiere – this is vintage and it definitely looks and feels dated. I mean, Penelope is a beautiful woman and she could look beautiful in a sack. But I do feel like she’s been stuck in a style rut for about 5-plus years, right?

Oh, and here’s another Kristen Stewart-Chanel look, from the Tuesday afternoon jury photocall. I actually love this suit on her. Cate Blanchett’s suit is Stella McCartney and… that’s all I’ll say about that.

I like it. She has the vube to pull it off

Who’s the guy next to her? He’s very handsome.

    • Ratsy Pomona says:

That’s what I want to know too!

      • M4lificent says:

Kristin’s dress is meh. My first thought was, who’s the cutie on the left. My second thought was to be really impressed with Ava’s dress — it is perfectly cut to bring out her hourglass figure.

    • Anna says:

That’s Chang Chen, he’s a Taiwanese actor whose been in tons of great movies. Many of Wong Kar wai’s films for example. He was also in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

  2. Clare says:

I feel like you can put Stewart in the lovliest clothes (LOVE the suit) but she spoils it with her frown/scowl combo. I get it, you don’t have to smile and cheese all over the place, but to me she just has such a negative vibe ALL.THE.TIME. It’s a struggle to enjoy the outfit when the wearer looks so damn unhappy. Shrug.

    • Astrid says:

      +1

    • Morning Coffee says:

      +1000

    • Jessie says:

      @Clare

      This. All day.

I saw some short interview clip of her the other day, and she always comes across as taking herself sooooooo seriously, and just uber-focused on making sure whatever comes out of her mouth is erudite and art/self-reflective, which comes across as completely self-absorbed and not self-aware in the least.

All done in that brooding sometimes earnest super fast herky jerky stilted delivery of hers, chock full of tics. Lol

    • Shelly says:

There are plenty of photos of her smiling at Cannes. Y’all are all bent out of shape for no reason. It’s the go to critique of her and it isn’t even a valid one.

  3. Josephine says:

My issue with Kristen Stewart is that the clothes always wear her. She always looks uncomfortable and slightly afraid of everything she is wearing. No presence at all, and I don’t hate her as an actress. I guess the money is worth it to her to be a clothes patsy for some designer? I don’t get any of these Chanel looks.

    • Div says:

I think only one of the actresses actually admitted it (might have been Rooney Mara), but the case with 90% of these contracts with fashion houses is money/exposure. Actresses can keep making weird indies and/or critically successful (if not commercial) films and keep afloat as it’s much harder for films to make money in the golden age of TV and streaming. A good example is Natalie Portman, who made the critical darlings Annihilation and Jackie, but Jackie barely made its budget back and Annihilation got bundled off to Netflix outside of its limited, short US release. Natalie, however, has repped Dior forever and it probably brings a nice stream of money in.

  4. Chaine says:

    The blue suit is smashing!

    • Darla says:

Right? God I want that suit

    • Milla says:

Yup. It really suits her. As for the dress… The skirt is not great. Same for Penelope. Make up, hair, all is gorgeous.

  5. mia girl says:

I think her hair and makeup are great.
    Love the suit.

  6. lightpurple says:

Kristin looks good in both these looks. The black dress is pretty and the suit is fantastic. Also, I think it takes real courage to wear boucle pants because that fabric can look bulky and adds the appearance of a lot of weight to the wearing. But she looks good and the unexpected pastel color on her is refreshing.

  7. Renee2 says:

I think that K-Stew looks good in both ensembles. I am not a fan, but I do sympathize with her because I think that she has social anxiety, and that although she has mastered it somewhat that she is still suffering from it. Also, why do we keep on telling women to smile?

  8. Beth says:

I like the clothes, but with Kristens bad posture and unhappy facial expressions, clothes don’t look right and she looks bored and uncomfortable

  9. Jussie says:

The Chanel suit is lovely. I don’t know why Chanel doesn’t put her in more suits and blazer/mini-skirt combos. She always sells the hell out of those.

    Penelope’s dress is just…yeesh.

    • Pandy says:

Agree, Jussie. She looks great in suits. The black dress was dull. As is Penelope’s ! I kind of like Chloe’s dress – it’s interesting. Would like to see the back of it. Cate looks like a Kardashian with that exaggerated hourglass suit. But that blue Chanel suit is the bomb.

  10. Anare says:

Not into that hair. I think Kristen is beautiful and has delicate features. She seems to counteract that by looking all tough and scowly and slouching. I’m always interested to see what she is wearing but she herself usually elicits an eye roll. Those suits look like Easter at Talbots. Nope!

    • lydia says:

The important thing is kristen is on the Cannes jury. She was asked last year too but screened her short film instead. It’s quite prestigious. Looks are subjective.

  11. Tiny Martian says:

I love the suit on Kristen because she is not a middle aged business woman. But if the same suit were worn by a middle aged business woman, I wouldn’t even notice it. It looks like something a southern real estate agent would wear to an open house, or that a smart, wealthy grandma would wear to a Mother’s Day brunch. The dress is okay, but it makes her look lumpy, so I think the fit is off.

Chanel frequently just looks dowdy to me these days, they need to step up their game!

    • Becks says:

BINGO. I feel like Jane Fonda would wear it on Grace and Frankie. But, it works because its unexpected on Stewart, the color is lovely on her, and the white bodysuit/tshirt thing dresses it down a notch.

  12. Va Va Kaboom says:

Super weird, but Kristen resembles a young sober Johnny Depp in the blue suit photo.

  13. Ninks says:

This is the closest I’ve ever come to liking something Chloë Sevigny is wearing.

  14. Veronica says:

The dress is lovely, but it’s not quite fitted right, yeah? It either needs to be tighter in the torso or slightly more billowy. They both look good in the suits, though.

Not digging Penelope’s dress. I like Chloe’s, though I’m not thrilled about the drop waist look coming back.

  15. JennyJenny says:

I cannot even imagine poor Cate sitting in that pink suit ~
As for Penelope, I always love seeing the vintage gowns come back.

  16. Red says:

I actually really like that suit Cate Blanchett is wearing. Is it uncomfortable to wear? Idk but it looks great on her and gives off a nice shape.

    • Lady D says:

I like it too, and I also think it looks good on. It is a little tight, she could have gone up a size, but other than that it seems fine.

    • Veronica S. says:

I like the suit, too. But it’s definitely a little tight across the waist – which makes a sad statement about the cut of designer clothes, honestly, since Cate can’t be more than – what, a size 4 at most?

  17. Becks says:

I like both looks on Kristen actually. I think she has the vibe to pull of that black Chanel. I don’t think its objectively a nice dress, but she makes it work. And the suit looks really good on her.

Cate Blanchett looks fine in the Stella McCartney suit but its very yawn-inducing.

  18. Becks says:

Also, Penelope Cruz looks gorgeous. Yes she’s worn similar silhouettes countless times in the past, but if it works for her, why not?

  19. PunkyMomma says:

Love Kristen’s hair, but she always looks so uncomfortable in Chanel. Maybe it’s because Chanel has become so matronly, IMO. Dress her in something less frills, less “ladies who lunch” — something more edgier.

  20. Maum says:

    I want that Chanel suit.

Am horrified to see that we might moan about McCartney dresses… and then we see another of her suits and pine for the dresses.
Seriously how can you manage to make Cate Blanchett look like she’s wearing clothes two sizes too small????

  21. MellyMel says:

Honestly my favorite thing from Cannes every year is the sunglasses ppl wear at the photocalls. I need the pair Cate is wearing asap!

Also the Chanel suit is pretty, but I just like the pants and not the blazer for some reason. maybe it’s too long?

  22. Naomi11 says:

I say meh! She always looks miserable to me. It just doesn’t work for me.

  23. Lizzie says:

Kristen Stewart’s style always does it for me. Even when she misses – I like something about her look. she just looks cool…always

  24. Div says:

I love Penelope’s dress actually. It is dated, but it still is a great look and I can’t believe it’s Chanel. Kristen’s outfits are nice, especially the suit, but would be better with cleaner lines. She, like most, usually looks better in non-Chanel looks as something about the lines/fit with Chanel always seem a bit off nowadays. I love Cate but what I’ve seen so far is…nope. How can Stella be so bad and make Dior and Chanel look good? The Armani gown Cate wore isn’t great either.

  25. Reef says:

*sigh* Cate Blanchett in a tailored suit is one of the universe’s greatest things.
Ms. Ava “I invite them to sue me” DuVernay is really beautiful.
ETA: What exactly is wrong the McCartney suit? The flare out in the suit jacket is intentional. It’s well fitted.
I’m biased though. I have always loved McCartney suits. It’s the one thing she does exceptionally well.

    • Maum says:

      Exceptionally well?
      Wow.
These trousers look too short and give her a camel toes.
Cate looks exceptionally uncomfortable in them and looks like she’s pushing the hem of the jacket to cover her crotch (in a few of the other pics I’ve seen too).
She normally has such good posture but she’s all hunched up in her suit.

      • Reef says:

Upon further inspection and viewing other sources, I don’t see camel toe. (lol)
They’re cigarette pants. The cuffs are supposed to stop at the ankle. The silhouette is perfect for her angular shape. This pic caught her awkwardly adjusting. I don’t think the intention of the blazer was to cover her crotch, as that would make the flare at the hem pointless.

      • Veronica S. says:

I don’t see camel toe either? That’s just how the material stretches when you move in certain ways. The pants are cut perfectly for a cigarette pant. It’s the jacket that may be a tad too tight across the midsection, given the way it’s seems to be pulling a tad at the linkage.

  26. Paisley says:

The Chanel suit is lovely! Her hair and the sunglasses are off, though.

  27. Cat says:

She looks great in both outfits, plus she is a juror, and not representing a movie. I’m not sure why that makes a difference, with me.

Why do women have to stand around cheesing, for the camera? Of course the pictures of her smiling, laughing and dancing, at last night’s premiere… will never be shown. An official trip over her on stage, and Kristen was laughing, with him about it… and of course that will never be shown.
She should ‘ve proud to have been asked two years, in a row, to be a juror.

  28. Sherry says:

I’m not a suit person, but I like both suits, even the McCartney one on Cate!

  29. ChillyWilly says:

Agree with Kaiser. Love the blue suit on her and hate the black dress. And I am not a fan of this hair on her. I love it short but don’t like the sculpting she has going on. Cate’s suit looks cheap and the jacket is ill fitting.

  30. Chinoiserie says:

Um, I recall a LOT of negativity here about Stewart, expecially after Sanders affair. So saying Twihards wanted to end her career is a bit…odd. I’d doing indie films and dating women what made you change your mind or did you just forget???

  31. mela says:

what I think ruins EVERY kstew look is #1 her skin and hair looks dirty and #2 her perpetul BAGS under her eyes. she always looks like she is strung out or stoned

  32. BooRadley says:

not a Twihard, not even close.
But…. Kristen is looking mighty yummy these days. that’s all i’ll say.

  33. Sage says:

I love the Kristen Stewart and Chanel partnership! The blue suit is perfection!

  34. Addison says:

I really like the top part of the dress. Those two things hanging at the bottom are a negative. I think if they were not there I would really like this.

The pantsuit on Kristin really works.

  35. Elisse says:

I love the black Chanel dress, but not on Kristen. It’s too girly for her.

  36. Shelly says:

She looks great actually. Her day to day style is usually godawful – its her thing but she dresses like a 14 yr old boy. Not so cute at almost 30. But she can look a million dollars when styled and she has a stunning face.

Also do not get Kaiser’s quip on twihards trying to keep her as Bella … it’s the haters who cannot let go ofthat. Any Twihard i see on twitter or comment section are super excited for any movie she makes. I think ppl forget that she started out in indie movies and did them throughout the Twilight era too. She didn’t fight to do them, she just kept doing them and struck gold when she teamed with Assayas

  37. Pandakeeper says:

Kristen’s make-up is flawless. She is pretty. Digging the pant suits on both Kristen and Cate. Cate looks really sexy in the pant suit.
