Rihanna launched her Savage lingerie collection, but no one can get on the site!

My breasts got bigger in my 20s, and that was when I just stopped trying to find cute lingerie. There just isn’t a lot of cute stuff for women who are bigger than, say, DD-cup. Even if you are a DD-cup, you still have to really search for cute stuff, or just squash your ladies into too-small bras and negligees and such. So many people were hopeful that Rihanna’s lingerie brand, Savage X Fenty, would be the next big thing. They hoped that Rihanna would do for bigger women what she did for women of all colors and skin tones: make a good product which appealed to ALL women. Rihanna launched the Savage collection in New York last night, and the collection went online overnight too. Unfortunately, few people have even gotten a look at it because this happened:

Just when you thought the wait was over, an online queue to view Rihanna‘s highly anticipated lingerie collection might just stop you in your tracks. The “Work” singer has been heavily promoting her Savage x Fenty lingerie collection, so when fans thought the wait was over they were sorely disappointed when they were met with a black screen reading “We’re holding your spot.”

Not only were fans and would-be shoppers prevented from viewing the items on sale, several people were also given an estimated wait time until they could enter and buy products. An option to leave the “line” was made available, but users were warned they could lose their spot. And those who opted to stay, saw their wait time extended multiple times. Others were just about to pay for their lingerie when the website refreshed, causing them to start the process all over again.

[From People]

I’m not saying this is Rihanna’s fault, per se. I mean, she wasn’t sitting there, designing the website all by herself. Rihanna has people. Those people hire other people to design and operate the site. But considering the rollout of Fenty Beauty was so flawless, this shambolic rollout does make it seem like… maybe Rihanna doesn’t give as much of a sh-t about lingerie? I’ve been looking through the photos of the pieces too – NSFW images here – and while I applaud her for making some stuff for bigger women, a lot of the pieces don’t look very high-quality. Hmm… okay, there’s one lace babydoll that I really want. Except when I tried to look it up on the Savage site, I just kept getting error messages!! FIX THIS, RIH.

Clicked on the link and…..it all looks kind of tacky

I feel like maybe she’s doing too much at once. I understand the need to strike while the iron’s hot, but it’s better to at least take a bit of time to make sure you can oversee some of the details… But I didn’t like what I saw either. The lingerie looked cheap, I think I’ll stick with the makeup for now.

This isn’t a shambolic or messy launch. Every smart retailer sets up their website to put people in a queue on launch day if they know they’re going to have the kind of interest that crashes servers. Would you rather be in an orderly queue or sat refreshing an error page for hours and hours? As you mention, you’re already getting error messages WITH the queue. Without it the site would just be totally down.

It costs an absolute fortune to beef up your servers so they can handle this kind of instant avalanche of traffic. No one in their right minds would spend that kind of money, not when it’s only a problem for one day. You might as well just set fire to a few million dollars.

Fenty Beauty launched worldwide in stores and online at Sephora, not just online at the Fenty Beauty store, so there was far, far less strain on the website.

Anyway, I joined the queue late, got an estimate of 25 minutes, went and made breakfast and came back 15 minutes later to find it was already my turn. Bought what I wanted with no frustrating checkout crashes or bugs. This was an absolute breeze compared to things like sneaker launch queues, or god forbid, ticket sale queues.

Tell me if I’m on the right path here. I’ve always been under the assumption, and I see this mostly in cosmetics, that the “x” in the name is said as “by”. Like, one would say, Savage by Fenty, rather than Savage “ex” Fenty. (Ie: 2×4 is ”2 by 4”, not “2 ex 4”)

It gives me unnecessary anxiety when I see makeup people on YouTube say “ex” when talking about a palette or something, that this will cause a huge rash of people to start saying “ex” and the concept of x meaning “by” will be lost with time forever like the pound sign, the beanie (which is different than a stocking cap) and some other one I can’t think of right now.

    • Veronica S. says:

Yeah, that’s how it’s supposed to read. The multiplication symbol just gives it the idea of being “greater” in combination than either by itself. The people on YouTube are just idiots.

      • Lagertha says:

I think the reading is supposed to be ‘by’ as in 3 by 2 is 6, it’s a shorthand way of saying that you’re multiplying by. But it doesn’t read all that clearly…

  5. Veronica S. says:

That’s actually a really smart way to do it, IMO. It’s better to queue people up than overload the server and have it crash.

  6. Yathink says:

I buy a stupid amount of lingerie. I have a stupid amount of very expensive lingerie. I wouldn’t pay Kmart prices for this stuff. It looks like the horrible tacky stuff that sells in bulk from sweatshops online.

  7. Valois says:

Most of the pieces look like something I could get at Ann Summers or Primark, sorry. Maybe they look more high quality in person.

  8. Yeahright says:

I got through to the site.
    No thanks.
It looks chap but I applaud her for using real models.
