Mindy Kaling sparks debate: ‘I think we will regret this tiny sunglasses look’

A post shared by Mindy Kaling (@mindykaling) on

Mindy Kaling unexpectedly started a major conversation about sunglasses this week. And I love it. I love talking about sunglasses!! Somewhat randomly, Mindy had a thought about sunglasses trends and she tweeted this:

Many believe she was referring to the general “retro ‘90s” vibe in the sunglasses world right now, where major designers have featured tiny sunglasses on their runways, and celebrities have been seen with tiny sunglasses all over the place. Kanye West is partially to blame too – he famously told Kim Kardashian that big glasses are over, and that the new trend is smaller eyewear.

Personally, I remember the ‘90s trends with great shame and great joy. Like, I still really miss some of my clothes from that era, especially the grunge stuff. And I miss dressing like a witch for no real reason. I had the tiny sunglasses too and let me just say… the trend is best left in the ‘90s. We should be beyond that as a society. The fashion in glasses now should be oversized, Jackie O-style sunglasses. Also: I’m still waiting for the aviator shades trend to die. Aviator sunglasses are TRASH. Go ahead and yell at me.

Having survived the fashion of the 90’s, I agree with Mindy.

  2. Electric Tuba says:

Hahahaha aviator glasses are trash and this entire article just cracked me up so thank you very much for the laugh

  3. Gaby says:

I completely agree with her. Tiny sunglasses are ridiculous and look unflattering on everyone.

  4. OriginalLala says:

    yes! Mindy speaks the truth

  5. Skittlebrau says:

I love huge sunglasses and will wear them forever.

  6. Noddles says:

As a petit person, I love the tiny glasses on the 90’s. I loved the 90’s in general but I look wrong in oversized glasses

    • Lightpurple says:

Large sunglasses make me look like a bug.

      • Dee says:

Large sunglasses make ME look like a bug!
(Thats EXACTLY what I came to write, too!)

      • Cher says:

        I am dying right now…😂😂😂😂
        So funny!
I am sure you don’t look like a bug.

    • Erinn says:

I’m 5’2″. I used to ONLY want the tiniest glasses because I didn’t want people to immediately notice I was wearing them. To be fair I had to start wearing them at around 10/11 so I was starting to get self-conscious. As an adult I refuse to wear small glasses or sunglasses. I’d rather look ridiculous than have such a small area of lense. I also get migraines, so the larger and darker the sunglasses the better 😀

    • Tiffany :) says:

When it comes to actual glasses, I like the frames small to fit my face.

When it comes to sunglasses, I like big frames and lenses to help cover the delicate eye area and protect it from sun damage.

  7. Chaine says:

I agree with her and you. Tiny sunglasses are useless and silly-looking, and aviator sunglasses make one look like a bad cop or a serial killer.

  8. Valerie says:

You’ll have to pry gigantic sunglasses out of my cold, dead hands. I remember the tiny 90s sunglasses. I wanted a blue-tinted pair, but I love gigantic ones that actually cover my eyes.

    • minx says:

Same. I’m tall and look ridiculous in small sunglasses. I wear the biggest ones I can find, year in and year out, I don’t care what Kanye says. I want to protect my eyes, not squint and see comfortably.

      • Valerie says:

Yes, same! I have a pair of big prescription sunglasses. There is no way I’ll trade them for something trendier. In a year, the bug-eyes will be back, anyway. 😉

    • Ladykeller says:

You can pull my oversize bug glasses off my cold dead face. I know what looks good on me and what doesn’t.

  9. Leeschu says:

Yep, I will forever love big sunglasses. For some reason, I keep picturing Gary Oldman as Dracula wearing those tiny ass glasses. Maybe my recollection is wrong though?

    • launicaangelina says:

This!!!! I love the reference. I’m Team Big Glasses especially since I’m tall, curvy, and have prominent facial features.

  10. leskat says:

Why do you wear sunglasses? To protect your eyes from the sun. What does that better- small glasses or huge ones? You’ll never get big sunglasses away from me, my eyes just won’t let you destroy them for a fleeting nostalgic trend.

  11. savu says:

I retweeted her right after she tweeted it. I support this theory!!! Big sunglasses fa lyfe!!!

  12. Veronica S. says:

I don’t have strong feelings about it one way or the other, but like…I wear my sunglasses for the actual purpose of protecting my eyes, not just to look cool because sunglasses will certainly not help with that. So big glasses it is.

  13. Beth says:

I hate tiny sunglasses and aviators are ugly. I’ll stick with my Ray-Ban wayfarer shades which actually protect my eyes and look good

    • Luisa says:

yep, agree with every word you said Beth. tiny sunglasses stupid, aviators ugly (though they look alright on some people, if they don’t mind looking like a cop), ray ban wayfarers for life.

  14. Alexandria says:

But but but but but my Angie looks hot in aviators…

  15. Reginaphalange says:

AVIATORS FOR LIFE. I’ll take everyone’s that’s fine. Sexy bad ass mofo glasses.

    • Crowhood says:

I should Have known that the best name I have Seen would be my only support in the best sunglasses ever- AVIATORS

    • Giddy says:

I look awful in Aviators, but my husband looks fantastic! I just bought him a new pair for his birthday so he has a back-up pair.

      • Mel M says:

I also look terrible in aviators because I have a wide face. My husband though has an oval face so they look great on him. Honestly anything else looks ridiculous on him, like he’s trying to hard or something. So I’ll stick with my plan of getting him a good pair for his birthday this summer.

    • Erinn says:

I don’t hate them at all. I used to have a pair that actually looked surprisingly good. I had jokingly tried them on because it was when Dexter was really big still. I was like “DEBORAH MORGAN GLASSES, THANKS” and my hair was pretty similar to hers at the time. Pre-marriage husband convinced me to actually buy them in the end. They were just a cheap pair, but I refuse to believe I was sending uni-bomber vibes haha.

    • InVain says:

As someone who wears sunglasses almost every day and have for years (and owns at least 10 pair), aviators are the only style that consistently look good on me. I have a very small face and often have to find medium-small frames to look good or not push on my cheeks, but without a doubt it’s my signature style. The only other frames I can’t be without are the Ray Ban Justin. It was made for me (in the small size). But seriously, AVIATORS 4-EVA.

    • Lex says:

I wear aviators (or a similar variation) almost exclusively because I have a large wide head. Nearly every pair of glasses for women are too narrow and push into my temples. Large aviators are great as they give me good eye coverage and they’re usually wire so if they are a touch too small, I can bend them slightly outward to fit my head.
      Aviators fo lyf!

  16. Lucy says:

I recently got some huge round ones and I’m obsessed with them. Mindy speaks the truth!

  17. SequinedHeart says:

Most of the time Mindy grates me. but for this I am praisin’ her. I hate them, get rid of them, they look ridiculous.

  18. MandyPurr says:

Aviators are classic! My grandfather wore gold rimmed ones and because of that I’ll always love them. They aren’t for every face though.

  19. jess1632 says:

They only look good on Bella Hadid besides that tiny sunglasses is just a fad that’ll be gone by end of 2018

  20. Case says:

Totally agree. Not only are tiny sunglasses ugly — they’re so small that they can’t possibly do what they’re meant to do.

  21. Rori says:

The tiny sunglasses are horribly unflattering. I honestly think that the kardash-jenners start deliberately bad trends just to prove they can make anything catch on. Like, if kylie were to start wearing square shaped French manicures, people would follow suit even though we all currently mock that trend’s pervasiveness from the 00’s (for the record, I actually like those nails and think they’re objectively more flattering than the talons currently on trend). So, yes, Mindy is correct. Large shades are just more flattering on all faces than tiny shades or circular lennon-style shades.

  22. Jilly says:

Oversized sunnies will NEVER be over. That is all.

  23. Aud says:

You’ll have to pry my aviators out of my cold, dead fingers. Or off of my stiff, dead face. Or whatever.
