Will ‘Ocean’s 8’ encourage little girls to grow up and pursue a life a crime?

'Ocean's 8' Photo Call at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Ocean’s 8 comes out on June 8th. I just realized that: the EIGHT comes out on the 8th. Smart branding. So, we have a few more weeks to go, and I actually think this might be one of the few movies I actually go to see in the theater. Part of it is me just wanting to support an all-female cast. But there’s another part of me that just wants to see this movie because it looks like glamorous fun.

Anyway, the ladies – minus Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter!! – got together for a photocall in New York yesterday. Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Mindy Kaling all gathered for a photocall at… The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Get it? Because their heist takes place at the Met Gala. The ladies also did their first press conference as a group, which is how we got major Hollywood actresses suggesting that little girls can and should dream of growing up to be jewel thieves.

Midway through Ocean’s 8, there’s a scene where Sandra Bullock’s exquisitely coated Debbie Ocean faces a mirror and reminds herself why she’s decided to rob the Met Gala: not for man, not for herself, she says, but for the 8-year-old girl out there who could be inspired to lead a life of crime. At an extravagant press conference for Ocean’s 8 held next to the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art today, one reporter asked the cast if they really were trying inspire 8-year-old girls with their work. What effect would these “strong female roles” have? “Encouraging children to crime,” Cate Blanchett deadpanned.

Mindy Kaling then took the conversation in another direction, pointing out that the film provides positive representation of another, noncriminal sort in the fact that the characters are “orchestrating a crime, rather than fighting over a man.” Sandra Bullock pointed out that there is a man the characters in Ocean’s 8 fixate on, but more because he’s a target, not a love interest. The film aces the Bechdel test and probably earns a heap of extra credit on the assignment. “Our conversations are not about that man, and I think that’s very exciting,” Kaling said.

Really, being a criminal is just another form of self-actualization. “To an 8-year-old girl, maybe we’re not trying to say, ‘Go have a life of crime,’” Anne Hathaway added, “But we’re saying, ‘Go do what you want, there’s space for you.’” She commended it for having a “everybody in” message, and for showcasing a variety of perspectives.

[From Vulture]

If the women had taken the reporters’ questions seriously, I would hope that at least one of the women would say “we don’t have to be all things at all times, you know?” Why get pearl-clutchy about “what will the children think?” about a glamorous movie about glamorous women going on a jewel heist at the Met Gala? Did people worry that Ocean’s Eleven would encourage little boys to want to grow up to rob casinos?

Some fashion notes: Cate Blanchett’s purple suit is Salvatore Ferragamo (and I kind of love it). Bullock’s jumpsuit is Elie Saab (great color). Sarah Paulson wore Michael Kors, Anne Hathaway wore Maticevski and Mindy Kaling wore Stella McCartney (HATE IT).

Oh please, people need to loosen up and not take everything so seriously:( The movie looks fun and these women look amazing in the photos.

  2. Who ARE These People? says:

Why is Ivanka Trump not in this movie?

  3. anon says:

Did the 3 original ocean’s movies encourage boys to pursue a life of crime?

    • BB90 says:

      THIS

    • Rhys says:

Gawd, exactly! It’s like it’s 19 century and females need someone to show them the way, because obviously they are not capable figure it out themselves.

    • bbn says:

Exactly. Did we even have this conversation when they came out? How about The Godfather? Or Scarface? No? No need for one now then, end of discussion.

    • elle says:

I read InStyle’s interview with Bullock this past weekend, and I swear, half of it was her insisting how well the cast got along even though everybody was wondering how all those women could keep from catfighting.

      Sigh.

      • citney says:

I watched “Speed” the other day, Bullock does not even resemble the same person she was when she was younger.

      • Lex says:

Lol @ cityney of course she does and that movie was 25 damn years ago!
Do you look identical to 25 years ago?

    • Izzy says:

Exactly what I was coming here to say.

    • well maybe says:

      Perfectly said

  4. Lucy says:

LOL, as if. Can’t wait for this movie!!!!!!!!!

  5. Natalie S says:

I know that they were just joking around here but it’s slowly starting to stand out to me how we seem to expect women in the public eye, especially young women, to be role models in a way that we don’t in men. As if we get a say in the validity of their personal choices.

  6. minx says:

I have to say they all look great here. Anne Hathaway looks really pretty and love Sarah Paulson’s outfit. I don’t acknowledge that Cate Blanchett exists so my eyes slid right over her.

  7. Lala says:

I LOVE THAT GREEN JUMPSUIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I adore jumpsuits SO MUCH…of course, until it’s time to handle your bidness!!!!

    • Betsy says:

Was gonna say, I love their monocolor lusciousness, but I need to use the toilet and so I will never get one!

    • Louisa says:

I wore one to work yesterday and instantly regretted it after that second cup of coffee!

  8. Jess says:

Can’t wait to see this movie! And a ton of other “female” movies in the theater this summer. Gotta go out to watch them so the studios don’t just make movies with explosions.

  9. Betsy says:

    Sandra and Cate look…. different.

I love that all their outfits look beat crap crazy. Like Leandra Medina bat crap crazy.

  10. M.A.F. says:

Just like Harry Potter encourage little kids to turn to witchcraft and become witches and warlocks (although, lets be honest, still kind of a bummer that Hogwarts doesn’t exist).

    • Betsy says:

My oldest is a Harry Potter fan and I think a part of him is definitely still hoping.

  11. Ladykeller says:

Were people asking the same question about George clooney’s oceans movies? How many little boys saw him and his entourage and thought robbing a casino would be cool. How many little boys have seen shoot em up movies or drive like a maniac movies(which in real life is not cool and most likely results in vehicular homicide) and thought I want to do that. We finally are getting movies with female casts and female driven story lines and now we have to be accountable in ways that men never are.

  12. courtney says:

uh you do realize the 2001 Ocean’s 11 was a remake of the 1960 Rat pack film of the same name and no the film won’t encourage a life of crime unless those viewing it are at risk to start with

    • boredblond says:

Silly question wasn’t it? A 1980 movie called “How to Beat the High Cost of Living” about an all-female heist still makes me laugh. I know why they used the ‘ocean’s’ as a title, but that will just draw comparisons in every review rather than allowing it to stand on it’s own.

  13. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

People are stupid. Maybe if you’re worried about your LITTLE GIRL becoming a criminal, here’s a crazy thought… Don’t. Take. Her. Excuse me while I go back to applying this blue body makeup and glitter. I’m being inducted into the Omaticaya clan today and don’t want to miss my Na’vi birthday party.

    • lucy2 says:

The movie is rated PG-13, so maybe not appropriate for 8 year olds to begin with? And what 8 year old would be interested in this?

  14. Neelyo says:

I’m all for a female ensemble movie, just not this tired story and certainly not most of these particular women.

Can’t stand Bullock, Hathaway and Paulson. Blanchett may be talented but most of her movies are terrible.

  15. Betti says:

What is all the beef with Cate Blanchett. Did I miss anything?

  16. homeslice says:

I can’t stand Cate and wouldn’t pay a nickel to support a film she is in.
Sandy, I think, lied. She said she didn’t mess with her face at the Oscars, but she looks very “messed” with here too. And for goodness sake, dump the center part! She is starting to look like Cher.

    • Neelyo says:

Bullock totally messed with her face.

      • Marianne says:

I think she did as well (as well as most of people in Hollywood). And I mean, I get it. Hollywood is this really vicious society that values people more on their looks rather than talent/brains etc. She probably feels pressured to look like her 1990s self and never age from that point on. But because of her “America’s Sweetheart” image she can’t be honest about it.

  17. pixiewitch says:

I hope so. Men doing most of the crime is simply unfair.

  18. raincoaster says:

It’s a golden opportunity! Most jewel thieves are men, and jewellers know that, so they don’t keep as close an eye on women. Let’s make sexism cost the world!

  19. jferber says:

Can’t WAIT to see this movie.

  20. Anoni Mus says:

    Awkwafina? Awkward! *ducks*😜

  21. Cher says:

    Where is Rihanna?

  22. Marianne says:

Did Oceans 11 inspire boys to lead a life a crime? Seriously, what a stupid question.

  23. tearose11 says:

Love the green colour on Sandy, but those pants legs are just too long.

Kors isn’t flattering Paulson and considering we just saw a lovely evening gown from Stella McCartney this is really fug. Why are there shawls attached to Anne Hathaway’s top?

I think Cate and Awkwafina are the only ones whose clothes aren’t bad, but oh my gosh, all the ladies’ faces and hair look lovely! I want to see this movie so bad.

And why don’t reporters ask that dumb question every time there’s some heist movie starting men, if a life of crime is what they are teaching boys?

    • Snazzy says:

Yes! Sandra’s pants are way too long. Vic Beckham often does the same thing. Drives me bonkers

  24. Kizzy says:

Saw this last night at an advanced screening and we had a blast! I definitely recommend it.

  25. Valerie says:

Did anyone ask this about the other Oceans movies? Goodfellas? Casino?

  26. TheNotoriousMCG says:

Where’s the designer ID for Awkwafina?

  27. Doc says:

    I actually like Mindy’s outfit.

I like their group photo together, definitely going to go see the movie, love that it aces the Beschel test.

  28. Milavanilla says:

Hope so. It works pretty well for the president.
