Jane Krakowski’s 7 year-old son loves RuPaul’s Drag Race

When I saw this story pop up, all I could think was, “Who doesn’t?” The lovely Jane Krakowski, who reminded me that I still need to catch up on a season and a half of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday night to discuss the end of the series and the Tonys. Jane told Seth that her 7-year-old son was about to graduate from first grade and shared the tale of one of his recent playdates.

Jane’s son took part in some after school fun with a few close girlfriends. One of the moms sent her a video of the kids putting on an impromptu fashion show. The little girls came out in full princess regalia and then her son sashayed down the imaginary runway in his own princess dress, using purple marker as eye shadow and contour. Jane recalled that “he gave his best walk and then he went ‘fashion!'” Jane later asked him, “Where did you learn this? What was your inspiration?” Her son quickly responded “It’s because I watch RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

The 49-year-old actress confessed, “For a moment, I questioned my parenting,” but then thought, “No, this is amazing. He picked up some good tips…I’m proud that my son knows RuPaul’s Drag Race, and could compete!” But did he have to lip sync for his life? I need to know. At least Jane’s son can work on his contouring and “fashion!” as it was announced on Wednesday that Drag Race was picked up for an 11th season. (And in case anyone cares, as far as season 10, I am #TeamKameron all the way – and not only because he is one good looking man.)

Jane also talked a little about Sunday night’s Tonys. She won a Tony in 2003 for her role in Nine. Jane, who made her Broadway debut in 1987 in the infamous roller skating musical Starlight Express, told Seth that the awards ceremony is “the Super Bowl for my people.” She noted that “It was the first time I actually watched an awards show with my son,” telling Seth, “We were having this hilarious time making commentary and rooting for our friends to win.” Of course, when Jane said “friends,” she meant Tina Fey, who was robbed for Mean Girls. Jane added, “I’m trying to get my son as addicted to it as I am,” recalling her youth recreating the musical numbers from the ceremony in her living room. I think I have found my theater nerd twin.

I love that Jane has no problem letting her son be whoever he wants to be. That’s really awesome. Jane needs to be a judge on the show next season. Make it happen, Ru.

Would love to see Jane on drag race!

Unrelated but funny story. My almost six year old daughter tries to watch Brooklyn nine nine when she’s supposed to be sleeping, peeks out the door to see it. She loves terry crews, says she either wants to be him when she’s older, or marry him lol

    • Brittany says:

Aww cute!! Terry Crews is the best though, your daughter has good taste!

    • Samigirl says:

I let my 6 yo daughter watch B99. I’ll confess don’t censor much in our household, unless it’s sex related. Rosa is her favorite girl because she’s “scary pretty,” but Cheddar is her favorite boy😂😂. When it comes on, she yells out 99! So cute☺️
Terry Crews is a national treasure. Your little has amazing taste!

      • Kitty says:

I’m guilty of letting my daughter watch it sometimes too. It’s not that bad really, I tend to loudly clear my throat if I don’t want her to hear something lol. She loves any moment with rosa and Amy, if they something really cool she goes nuts.

I love her! She is so incredibly talented and it is so great she can enjoy her son just being himself and that he’s not self-conscious about what he likes. And yes, she needs to be a guest judge on Drag Race (with her son?!)!

My 18 year old daughter and my 12 year old son have been watching Rupaul Drag Race together for 2 years now.
My 17 year old son says that he finds it strange that there is no “drag” for women to dress as boys but culturally, women dress for show and men just don’t, hence drag.
I love that kids have access to this. I was watching “tortured” teens in some crappy show at their age.

    • Neva_D says:

There actually is drag for women, it’s just not as well known and the culture is much smaller, I believe. They’re called “Drag Kings” and you can see clips of performances on YouTube.

    • Rascalito says:

Yeah I often wondered why Drag Kings weren’t a bigger deal, because I thought I would find it fun to watch. But when you think about it, women and girls dress in men’s clothing all the time in everyday life, and nobody bats an eye. But if a boy or man wears any women’s clothing, suddenly everyone starts freaking out. So to be a drag QUEEN, is really making a statement, socially, politically, and personally. I really loved Madonna’s song “What It Feels Life For a Girl”, which was about this topic…

“Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short
Wear shirts and boots ’cause it’s okay to be a boy
But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading
‘Cause you think that being a girl is degrading
But secretly you’d love to know what it’s like wouldn’t you
What it feels like for a girl.”

      – Madonna

Sorry I don’t know how it is in the US but isn’t 7 years old for first grade late? I thought it was 5 years old.

    • AG-UK says:

School in the US begins later I am in the UK reception starts here at 4 he could be born after 1st Sep and would be starting school later

    • Lucy2 says:

He possibly recently turned seven, which would put him in the average age range for first grade. The majority of kids are 5/turning six in kindergarten, 6/turning 7 in first.

The new season of Kimmy is very good, and I’ve always loved Jane. I’m still disappointed she never won an Emmy for 30 rock.

    • Kitty says:

My daughter will be five when she starts grade 1 in September. Her birthday is in November, so she will already be in grade one for a few months before she turns six, won’t be 7 until she’s in grade 2

      • lucy2 says:

I was the same, early October birthday, and started kindergarten at 4, but I was always the youngest in the class.

    • AMA1977 says:

Exactly, it depends on the child’s birthday. Most districts use September 1st as the cutoff. My kids have birthdays in late September and late October, so they are always among the oldest in their grade. My daughter is 5 turning 6 going into Kindergarten, and my son is 10 turning 11 going into 5th grade. They’ve both got classmates with summer birthdays who are almost a year younger, and everything in between.

Jane is talented and hilarious; I loved her on “30 Rock” and I love her in “Kimmy.” Glad to see a story about her today!

  5. Patricia says:

I love Kameron too! What a fabulous fantasy queen. And she’s the person who is the least bothered by her quiet nature, everyone else is so concerned with it. She’s quiet but confident, and there’s obviously a lot going on in her mind and in her heart. Actually it makes her transformations that much more amazing, that she goes from a quiet man to a wonderful queen who KNOWS HER STUFF.

I wonder (even as a huge drag race fan) if 7 is a bit young for the show. Ru LOVES her dirty puns. I guess it’s over the head of a 7 year old.
But who am I to talk… my three year old has been walking around saying “miss Vanjie… miss Vaaaanjie…” for weeks now Hahahaha.

    • Slowsnow says:

I also wonder about the racy stuff regarding my kids.
But then again, better to start hearing a few things here and there from a few queens than in school from older kids and being completely naïve.

  6. Anna says:

This brought me such joy! But #teamasia all the way. I’m in Dallas though, so I’ve been watching her perform for years. She’s a ray of sunshine. I have a new found appreciation for Kameron after following her on instagram.

  7. Samigirl says:

I mentioned in a sub thread, but we aren’t huge on censoring in our house. We’re also very sex positive. My 6 yo daughter LOVES RPDR, but I will ff thru some of the more “scandalous” stuff (such as the bottoms up game a few episodes ago). She thinks the makeup is amazing (which it is) and loves the transformations. Honestly, I’d rather her watch that then SBSP.

As for this last season of Kimmy…what a let down. Hubs and I literally said “that’s it?!” When it was over. Sorely disappointed. I need more Titus in my life!

  8. Lynn says:

My daughter is 15. When I heard a dear, talented and fabulous friend of mine was going to be on season 7 of Drag race I asked her if she would like to watch it with me. She said “OK” not even really knowing what the show was about. She actually thought it was about car racing, Lol. Now, she is like Drag Race wikipedia. She’s seen every season multiple times, can tell you who was eliminated in what order and is pretty much obsessed with the show. I even took her to Dragcon NYC last year. She was devastated when Miz Cracker was eliminated. I think Cracker was robbed, as was my friend is season 7, unfortunately. But, I created this little drag monster so I have no one to blame but myself. And, for a high school freshman, she is still surprisingly innocent. A lot of the dirty puns go right over her head.

    • Patricia says:

Ms Cracker was tiring me right out. The over blown self analysis at all times was not entertaining. I think she’s a wonderful queen but the competition was really getting to her and it was becoming hard to watch.

It’s so funny though how different people see different things. My good friend couldn’t get enough of cracker and didn’t find her tiring at all.

      • Lynn says:

I agree, she was too much in her own head, she let the competition get to her. However, I do think she won that lip sync. She was never going to win it all though.

    • PamelaJudy says:

Cracker will be back for All Stars. I wonder if The Vixen will also get a rudemption on Allstars? I love how Kameron is always suuuuuuper prepared to lipsync and i’m living for the Eureka/Kameron bff storyline .

  9. Grant says:

I adore her. She is such a gifted comedic actress. Jenna Maroney is iconic, and she makes me cackle on Kimmy Schmidt. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

  10. Betsy says:

Isn’t the language a bit adult on that show?

I love her on Kimmy and I loved her on 30Rock.

    • Ange says:

I’m sure a 7 year old living in the city hears a lot worse during their day to day.
