Roseanne Barr still claims she’s ‘never practiced racism’, ‘it was misunderstood’

'Roseanne' at Walt Disney Studios - Premiere

Roseanne Barr is still tweeting, in case anyone was wondering. Her show has been cancelled by ABC, but Sara Gilbert and others are trying to make a spinoff happen without Roseanne. It will probably be a difficult task, considering that Roseanne is the partial owner of the Roseanne property and those particular characters. It doesn’t even matter to me, because even if Gilbert and others are able to put together some kind of spinoff show, Roseanne Barr will not go down quietly. ABC gave her legitimacy and the platform to show her racist ass all the time now. Which is why Roseanne went on another tweet-storm about how she’s definitely not racist.

Roseanne Barr says she has taken a good hard look at herself –– and is sure she is not a racist. The former Roseanne actress, 65, tweeted on Wednesday that she’s reflected on things since the cancellation of her ABC show spurred by a racist tweet she made about former Barack Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett.

“1) I want u all2 know I’m fine. I’ve been using this time2 reflect &2 gain insight on what I said & how it was misunderstood..,” Barr tweeted. “Needless2 say I’m NOT what people have accused me of! I’ve never practiced “RACISM” in my entire life & never will. Meantime…2) I’ve been watching this new doc called “Malcolm X: An overwhelming Influence on th Black Power Movement.” Directed by my dear friend Thomas Muhammad (my campaign manager in 2012)who called me immediately when my show was canceled. If you have any questions for me, direct them to Mr. Muhammad please. Be sure to watch his brilliant movie!” she wrote, adding that Muhammad had “agreed to speak for me.”

“He knows the work I have done in civil rights against racism ALL MY LIFE & understands my tweet was about Iran’s regime, not race-The website is: http://www.bbunity.com ,” Barr added.

On top of watching the documentary about human rights acitivist, Malcolm X, the comedian has also been inspired by the music of Kanye West.

“MUCH LOVE 2 U all-thanks for helping and praying for me! It worked! Listen to @kanyewest new album about mental illness, it’s the greatest thing ever,” she tweeted. Barr continued tweeting, writing, “guys, I have been planting trees digging in the earth singing and feeling a great deal of relief. I will begin to speak for myself in media soon.”

However, the actress then went to defend herself addressing how she referred to Jarrett, who is black, as a cross “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes”. Barr tweeted, “Rod Serling wrote Planet of The Apes. It was about anti-semitism. That is what my tweet referred to-the anti semitism of the Iran deal. Low IQ ppl can think whatever they want. My mind went into deep shock and my body too. I see clearly now- My faith is stronger today than ever before. I have faith in the American people to free their minds & unite.”

It’s difficult to read those tweets and try to translate them into English. But I’m absolutely 100% positive that this sh-t is offensive. Someone claiming that they’ve “never practiced racism” just after they were fired for tweeting racist sh-t is just… exhausting. And no, Roseanne’s “Planet of the Apes” reference was not about anti-Semitism, my God. This is Roseanne’s version of “But I have black friends!” except she doesn’t actually have black friends, so she’s saying she’s watching a documentary about Malcolm X and she’s listening to Kanye “Slavery Was A Choice” West. I can’t.

    • Megan says:

Is trying to win worst person of the year? If so, she will nail the first runner up slot and Trump will finally get a real win.

      • j says:

I’m so stoked that she used the “low IQ people” quip – if all Trump loving idiots could start revealing themselves this way it’d make my life much easier.

  2. Lynnie says:

What I’m confused on was has Roseanne been racist in the past? I keep on hearing conflicting stories, and since I only vaguely know her from the anthem thing idk who to believe (although I am inclined to go with the ones saying this behavior isn’t new).

Also I’m firmly under the belief that it should be mandatory for stars to have a professional tweeter so you can avoid rambling excuses such as the one above 🤦🏾‍♀️

    • Milla says:

Nooooo never. Let them show their true colors.

I did a little research and this person is very problematic. She’s a typical 45 supporter… Glad never watched her show. Sad for all people involved.

    • Darla says:

Well she called Susan Rice an ape too, several years ago. So, yeah.

    • QueenB says:

She had a similiar incident not long ago.
For the time when she was originally famous its hard to tell because the media landscape was different. She certainly was progressive in the original Roseanne, that was a groundbreaking show. If she dealt with racism or if she was your typical white lady I do not know. I guess people just assumed because she wrote and created that show that she must be enlightened.

    • MissMarierose says:

Yes. Read Tiffany Haddish’s interview with the Hollywood Reporter. It just came out.

      • Lynnie says:

Thanks for all the replies everyone! That and reading the comments down below have me wondering why the networks decided to reboot the show in the first place smh

    • nikki says:

The weird thing is, no, she wasn’t, at least never publicly. And her show dealt with hard issues in a really liberal way. Her racist insane BS has just been over the past decade or so, it’s like she just sailed right off the deep end.

  3. Kitty says:

I love how she says low iq people won’t understand her. She sounds like a certain old racist she loves so much

    • minx says:

Yes. And she’s a perfect Trump supporter, she’s not intelligent and she’s paranoid. So she buys into any half-baked conspiracy theory and repeats it like it’s truth.

  4. ZigZags says:

“Low IQ ppl”? That is straight out of the Trump/Nazi handbook.

    Dear haters,

Look at me!! I have Black friends and I listen to Black music (it’s really good!) and Black people can move into my neighborhood (not that they can afford it) and love is love so I’m happy if my child marries a Black person because mixed kids are so cute (sometimes so long as they look more white). Malcolm X and Kanye are so amazing and inspirational. I’ve loved learning about the Black experience in America. Free your minds and unite under the banner of Trumpism because it’s good for Amerikkka!

    Your girl in white power,

    Roseanne

“It’s difficult to read those tweets and try to translate them into English. But I’m absolutely 100% positive that this sh-t is offensive.”

Lmao, this. She’s a turd and not a polished one.

  6. ChrissyMS says:

Ok, I don’t believe Roseanne is a card carrying 100 percent racist person. I think people have complicated and weird opinions about shit…and yes some of those opinions can be racist even if other opinions they have are not racist.

    But that doesn’t matter.

You were the #1 star on a network television show and it wasn’t your first time around so you really should have known better Roseanne. The show had to be cancelled. Because that tweet sounded totally RACIST. Your stupidity and likely addiction problems that you refuse to acknowledge lost you and a bunch of other people millions of dollars.

    • ValiantlyVarnished says:

Ummm NO. She has said racist things about black women NUMEROUS times. Valerie isnt even the first black woman she’s called an ape on Twitter. Susan Rice has that honor. Here’s the deal: if she talks like a racist, she’s a racist. Im tired of this splitting hairs crap about what constitutes racism. Im also tired of white people thinking they get to define or decide who is or isnt racist. That’s not how this works. Non- racist people don’t go around saying racist things! Period. And they certainly don’t double down on it once they’ve been called out.

      • ChrissyMS says:

Well I am half Indian so not exactly white. I just think she is crazy and doesn’t think of herself as a racist. I guess also I really like her old show so I want it to not be true. It was a big part of my childhood. I am just as disgusted and disapointed as anyone else.

    • S says:

The idea that you have to be a “card carrying 100 percent racist person,” to earn the title is an enormous load of crap. Stop enabling terrible people to be even more terrible by excusing or minimizing their words and actions, or engaging in whataboutism.

      Roseanne is a racist. Period.

She’s been a racist for a long, LONG time. She dressed as Hitler and made burnt “jew cookies” and then said it was a “joke.” (Hilarious!) She’s called multiple African-American people “apes” or “monkeys” and said it was a “just comment on their looks.” She accused George Soros, a holocaust survivor, of being a Nazi collaborator who led Jews to the ovens. (He was 13 and in hiding during the war.) She promotes and endorses dangerous, bogus conspiracy theories like Pizzagate, MK Ultra and Q Anon. She believes 9/11 and Sandy Hook were false flags and/or inside jobs. She engages in anti-vaxxer talk and conspiracy theories about gov’t mind control via vaccine. She called Israel a “Nazi state,” promoted a Holocaust-denying musician and used to talk a lot about “jewish mind control,” before switching to Islamaphobia as her religious bigotry of choice and now claims Islam is a “pedo rape culture.” She said that student activist David Hogg gave a Nazi salute at a rally. She called Clinton aide Huma Abedin a “filthy Nazi whore,” and claimed Clinton was surrounded by, “filthy jew haters who make fun of the holocaust” and, yeah, she called Clinton a c-u-next-Tuesday, publicly.

So, no, people who point out racism are not “the real racists,” and I don’t give two poops on a stick whether or not someone is “100% racist” or not. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a quack and spews cruel, dangerous racist rhetoric … It’s a racist.

      • J.Mo says:

Thank you, S! She hasn’t even touched her Susan Rice comment in her explanations. I do, however, think her behaviour can be attributed to mental health issues but the thoughts that lurk are all hers.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Thank you for this, S! I have not kept up with her – besides hearing that she was a Trumpster which made me ill. I saw her on Conan several years back talking about her macadamia nuts. Truth is she’s always been difficult to listen to…but now she sounds like a lunatic. And claiming her comments are misunderstood? C’mon Roseanne, you never ever ever compare or call a POC an ape! Roseanne is actually the one suffering from a low IQ.

She did surround herself (or had a good casting agent) with good actors: Laurie Metcalf & John Goodman. I have this tiny feeling that they all knew she’s a racist. I wouldn’t be excited about a spin-off show of hers in any way, shape or form. She would profit from it. Forget that.

  7. Starryfish says:

Why would she need to practice, when she’s clearly already an expert.

  8. QueenB says:

Did Trump write her statements? Hard to tell them apart. For a Low IQ indiviual.

  9. MissMarierose says:

    Bullshit.

  10. Valerie says:

Racist people never think they’re racist.

    • Anika says:

Valerie: Actually, no, not true. Plenty of racist people–think David Duke and his despicable followers, other neo Nazi groups–are racist and quite PROUD of being racist.

  11. Muprhy says:

Why doesn’t she explain to us how we were supposed to understand it? She thinks Valerie has a wide upper lip area?

  12. Rapunzel says:

“I’m not a racist, I just play one on Twitter.”- Roseanne

  13. me says:

Why would they even consider a spinoff? The acting on that show is horrible !

  14. ocjulia says:

    So, sorry, not sorry?

    Got it (I think).

I’m a low IQ person, so I may have misunderstood.

  15. Stella in NH says:

She says that she doesn’t “practice racism”. Hmmm, no need to practice it, honey, you’re pretty damn good at it.

  16. Anniefannie says:

After reading the Tiffany Haddish interview I’m 100% confident Rosanne is a racist. She’s problematic on so many levels its exhausting.
I’ve dealt with and married into ( sob) so many people with racial issues and the common denominator when called out was a horrified ” I’m not a racist!” Ya uhh huh the behavior, attitude was consistent but they always rejected the label. Own your s#^t people then maybe you can make the change!

    • Jocey says:

Yup. People act like being called racist means they’re evil monsters who gleefully murder people of color with their bare hands. Instead of owning that yes, you can be a pleasant, educated, liberal person and still be really freaking racist. Racism isn’t just violence and slurs, it’s internalized reactions that we often don’t even think about.

  17. Incredulous says:

Obligatory “I can’t believe leopards would eat MY face!” cries woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party.

  18. S says:

Amazing someone can be so good at something without any practice at all. 🙄

    But, seriously …

-If you are constantly finding that you have to deny what you’ve said or done is racist, guess what? You’re a racist.

-If you say or do racist things…You’re a racist.

-If you condone racist jokes, actions and rants from others…You’re a racist.

-If you must fondly about the “good old days,” ignoring they weren’t at all good for people of color in this country…You’re a racist.

-If you think people are criminal, lazy, stupid or somehow less deserving of sympathy, empathy or social services than you, based on their accent, skin color or birthplace … You’re a racist.

-If you make excuses for those who do any of the above…You’re a racist.

-If you believe respect for a piece of cloth is a bigger issue than black men dying at the hands of police for doing nothing more than living their lives…You’re a racist. (Ditto if you start any sentence discussing these tragedies with the phrase “But if they wouldn’t have done ____”)

-If you deny that racism and white privilege exist, or argue why YOU can’t possibly be racist because _____…You’re a racist.

    So, yeah.

And, heck, even if you, personally, “don’t have a racist bone in your body,” every white person alive in the United States has benefitted from, and been a party to, systemic racism. Also, it’s impossible to live in a racist society without absorbing some of those messages. Heck, studies of African American children show they’ve accepted and believe, subconsciously, that their white peers are prettier, smarter and more trustworthy.

And, no, I’m not saying that, “all white people are evil,” or “all white people are racists,” it means, simply, that racism is very real, and its effects are systemic and devastating and acknowledging that truth is, literally, the very least all Americans should be able to do.

    • ChrissyMS says:

I am not white but I do not agree with all of this. I also have seen people be racist towards white people. Sorry, that is cultural racism. It doesn’t have to be white to (insert minority) racism to be racism. This sounds like you are taking white people and putting them into a pretty small box which in my opinion is not going to bring on any change. The goal is to live and love together as equals and not as enemies. Obviously racism exists so don’t take my words out of context.

Roseanne may very well be racist but also quite mentally ill. I choose to give her some sympathy even though I think that she deserved to lose the show. She is being punished.

      • ChrissyMS says:

Also that piece of cloth is the American Flag. I don’t have any problem with kneeling during the anthem. but I recognize the flag for what it is.

      • S says:

You can’t be “racist against white people” because that’s not what racism is. Racism is about oppression, and people of color in the United States do not now, nor ever have had, the power to oppress. White people made very sure of that. So, sure, it’s possible for people of color to have prejudices about white folks, but without the power to oppress them, that’s not racism.

Also, not for nothing, but 99% of white people’s PERCEPTION that they’re victims in favor of people of color is pure, unadulterated delusion. Every educational, financial, employment and success statistic shows that white people remain advantaged over people of color at every single level of American society. White people who didn’t finish high school, have better long term financial prospects than African-American’s with a college education, for example. And the list goes on and on and on.

When you’re used to privilege, increasing equality may feel like oppression, but that doesn’t make it so.

The flag of any nation is, literally, a piece of cloth. People wear bikinis and thongs made out of the Stars and Stripes, a clear violation of the actual U.S. military Flag Code, unlike kneeling. So, again, if someone whose ancestors were brought here in the chains and is watching descendants of those people murdered on a near daily basis by those paid with their tax dollars to serve and protect wants to take a knee during a song which itself is an ode to slavery than, yeah, I’m pretty fine with it. Just as fine as I am with those who feel like they should stand, salute and honor at the same time. The nation which that piece of cloth represents guarantees the rights of both those individuals to co-exist, and for each to do what they feel is right without government prosecution.

      • ChrissyMS says:

White people with no high school diploma have better financial odds then Black people with a degree. I am going to have to look that up. I am not even sure how that works. You can’t get a job above minimum wage anywhere without a high school diploma. How does that work exactly? You may be right but I have not experienced that seeing people around me with or without diplomas. You can for sure show racism towards white people. It is illogical to think otherwise. It may not be systematic but individuals can be racist towards whatever race they would like too. Roseanne is a racist but not all white people are on one level or another or just by being white. That is what I think is what you are saying…..

      • S says:

All white people in America have benefited from system racism. That’s simply a fact. But it seems odd to me that you “think I am saying” something when I explicitly stated … “And, no, I’m not saying that, ‘all white people are evil,’ or ‘all white people are racists,’ it means, simply, that racism is very real, and its effects are systemic and devastating and acknowledging that truth is, literally, the very least all Americans should be able to do.”

        🤔

    • redsolesista says:

      👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 S!! #truth. Thank you.

Willful ignorance irks me to no end.
There is a plethora of books and online searchable info on systemic racism. People need to educate themselves instead of having a knee jerk reaction of denial. This willful ignorance of not knowing the difference between being prejudiced and being a racist is tired. White people in the US have benefited from systemic racism since it’s inception. This was thought out and purposeful. One of the best books I’ve read is
We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy – Ta-Nehisi Coates. This book gives you a history of the past and current systemic racism in the US.

  19. holly hobby says:

Ugh who wrote these for her? Orangino? Hey Roseanne, I heard Suckabee is stepping down at the end of the year so her job is open. Since you tweet just like the orange baby, maybe you can apply for this job!

  20. hogtowngooner says:

    Whatever, Adolf.

I’m so sick of people like her thinking that just because they don’t say the N-word (or any racial epithet) or own a Klan robe, that means they are not racist. Racism is a poison that permeates our society in a million different ways, some overt but more often than not, it’s covert. It’s in dog-whistle terms like “welfare queen.”

  21. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

My sister said a couple years ago, “I’m not racist, but…….” and as soon as I hear that $hit, I roll my eyes hard enough to give myself a migraine & I check out of the convo. I actually don’t recall what she even said because I just go dead inside.
