If Danai Gurira skips a workout: ‘It chips away at my feeling of well-being’

I know Danai Gurira primarily as Michonne on Walking Dead and Okoye in Black Panther. She’s also an accomplished stage actress and playwright, having won a Tony for her play Eclipsed. It’s nice to get to know her and I’m happy to see her on the cover of Women’s Health, where she’s of course discussing her workouts and her diet. (You can see the cover here. She’s so gorgeous.) Danai sounds like she does a little of everything to keep active. She has a taskmaster of a trainer who does a lot of inner and outer thigh and butt work with Danai and it shows. She also runs with her dog, does yoga and swims regularly. Oh and she has a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the dramatic arts in Zimbabwe. (Her parents are Zimbabwean academics. She was born in Iowa and moved with them to Zimbabwe at six. She calls herself a “Zimerican.”)

Here’s part of her profile with Women’s Health, with more at the source.

She works out up to four times weekly with her trainer
A typical workout for Danai includes lots of circuit training and Pilates-inspired moves, in which she alternates high-intensity intervals and active rest. Fisher has Denai wear a heart monitor and use resistance bands, which the actress travels with so she can do her workouts no matter where she is in the world. Every workout also includes glute work. “Sometimes it’s so intense I can’t remember what we did.”

“If I haven’t worked out, if I haven’t exercised and connected with my body in some way, it chips away at my feeling of well-being.”

She doesn’t focus on the pain when she’s sore
“It’s not like, ‘Oh, I’m in so much pain from that,’” she explains. “It’s like, ‘Oh, I feel the strength in my core, I feel the strength in my back.’”

“As women, we’re not always encouraged to find the fullest extent of our physical power,” she says. “There’s something so exciting about tapping into that part of ourselves.”

She limits dairy and meat and loves spinach
“I used to have spinach when I was a kid, and my mom wouldn’t let me leave the table until I’d eaten it,” says the actress, who was born in Iowa and grew up in Zimbabwe (her parents were academics).

“Somehow that worked its way into me feeling like I have to eat spinach. And now I love spinach—I mean, I love spinach. I want it in my smoothies, I want it on the side, I want it with my meals,” she says with a smile as she digs into a plate of the leafy greens.

[From Women’s Health]

I’m like that about working out, if I skip a day and it’s not the weekend I get squirrely. It’s not about punishing myself or making sure I burn calories, I think it flips a switch in my brain and that I’m addicted to it. Plus it does help you feel more capable overall, like you can get sh-t done. Danai described that well. I can’t get on board with the spinach thing though. I will make kale smoothies and I regularly eat all kinds of lettuce but spinach seems to get wilted quickly so I avoid it. Maybe I just haven’t been buying it fresh enough.

One thing I realized is Danai keeps her personal life on lockdown. I tried to figure out who she’s dating and all I could find were unsubstantiated rumors that she was with Norman Reedus a few years ago. I don’t think that happened.

Gorgeous lady, and her action scenes in Black Panther were exceptional, so she and her stunt people did a marvelous job.

    • Char says:

She’s so beautiful, so stylish and she was one of the best parts of Black Panther by far! And the judging look she gives in Infinity War is worth an Oscar.

  2. Ayra. says:

    Lord, she’s just so beautiful.

  3. Shelley says:

    She’s beautiful. That’s all I got

  4. Esmom says:

She’s beautiful. And I’m right there with her and CB in needing exercise for my mental health as much if not more than for my physical health. My son, too, although he goes overboard. I’m hoping he eventually learns moderation is ok.

  5. Veronica S. says:

Well, of course you do! Routine exercise produces endorphins. Your body will get used to those higher levels of hormone, so if you start skipping gym dates, you’ll feel the “off” effects as your body struggles to come down and readjust to those lower levels.

Her biceps are the stuff of dreams.

    • Kitten says:

Honestly, when The Walking Dead started turning to sh*t again, Danai was the only reason I kept watching. As a fitness freak, her body is pure inspiration to me.

      • Nancy says:

She kind of resembles an older Lupita, not as pretty, but interesting. I won’t give any WD spoilers, but I wonder if she will stick around now. I still watch bc we have since the beginning and of course, for Daryl who nobody seems to care for around here. I like Michonne walking her zombies on a leash….lol

  6. Skylark says:

Whoa, she is stunning, particularly that insanely beautiful profile pic.

I too love spinach and have it at least 3/4 times a week. I steam it and add to pasta, curries, casseroles etc and of course to make various Indian side dishes. It’s incredibly versatile and beyond delicious!

  7. Jay says:

Gorgeous woman!! Her IG is great, too. 🙂

  8. Reece says:

Arm goals. Leg goals. Bac…Body goals!
Gonna put my donut in the trash now.

  9. Onemoretime says:

She’s smart, intelligent, talented, beautiful and seems like a very sweet person! And her body is the truth. Whoever her significant other is, is a very lucky person. She does keep her personal life very personal.
When Andrew Lincoln leaves TWD I hope she leaves right along with him. Those two are my favorites and they deserve so much better.

  10. Lila says:

I agree with her. When I start skipping workouts, my family tells me that I get mean.

    • Zan says:

I so relate because I know that I am far less patient with my kids if I skip my workouts. The entire family notices, too. When I get a good run and workout in first thing in the morning, I am much better at really being focused and present with them. That alone keeps me getting out of bed early to workout even if I’m thinking I’d rather not.

  11. Rhys says:

Don’t know who she is but she looks lovely.

  12. Penfold says:

Gorgeous skin. Gorgeous woman. Wow. The Walking Dead doesn’t do her justice! (Rick and a Michonne are one of my favorite tv couples ever, I’ll definitely be sad when they end 🙁 )

I hope to see Danai in many future projects!

  13. Common Sense says:

I love her and the pictures are absolutely beautiful.

  14. jammypants says:

I find her so hot. She has this energy about her that exudes badassery, but graceful badassery.

  15. Naddie says:

I can relate to what she said about the pain, it gives me a certain pleasure to feel the muscles whining a bit in the day after. If they don’t, I feel like I didn’t exercise correctly. Now, the humor part is still missing, I love skipping the gym because it still doesn’t give me anything besides the physical part.

  16. Malachite says:

She is beyond stunning. I found the way she spoke of exercise and connecting with her body both wise and refreshing.

Funny note: as I was admiring her physique, I comforted myself by saying “well, she is much younger than me and therefore has more muscle to work with so, of course, I could never achieve that from a biological stand point.” I then looked her up and….she is a year older than me. Lol. Gotta get a good exercise regimen going now!

  17. Case says:

She’s gorgeous, talented and insanely fit. I love the pic of her in the pink shirt. I love the badasses she plays.

  18. Frosty says:

Love all things Danai. And I totally believe she and Reedus had a thing at some point.

  19. Lexie says:

Stunning woman and great actor. When I took my mom to see Black Panther and Danai came on the screen she leaned over and said “wow, look at her – the second coming of Nefertiri!”

  20. Janet Gerber says:

She’s gorgeous. We .need to see more of her.

  21. Natalia says:

My daughter is like this. One skipped workout and it’s curtains. I suppose it’s a good addiction if you can do the upkeep.

Oh and that entire pic of Danai in the cream colored thing is amazing.
