Prince Williams stepped out for his first event of the year on his wife’s b-day

Prince William

Prince William stepped out for an event today, his first of the year… unless Sunday’s church trip with the Queen counts as a royal event (which it might). William added this event to his calendar last week, in what was a notable piece of timing:

So, William is still in the slow process of “stepping up” to full-time royal work, which “no one actually really knows what that means.” He was made the patron to the London Air Ambulance Charity 30th Anniversary Campaign, and today he got to sit in an air ambulance and visit with staffers and families at a tea party.

The timing is also notable because today is the Duchess of Cambridge’s 37th birthday. Did you know that Kate is about eight months OLDER than Sarah Huckabee Sanders? Kate is also more than three years old than Nazi henchman Stephen Miller. None of these statements of fact are insults directed at Kate, I just like to remind everyone that being Deplorable is bad for your health. Anyway, I’m assuming that Kate will have a somewhat low-key birthday – People Magazine says that she and the kids are already back at Kensington Palace, and I assume George and Charlotte are already back in school, or soon will be. The Kensington Palace Twitter did send out these tweet, and if I was Kate, I would be mad about the photo they chose. There are plenty of good-quality photos of Kate where she’s smiling widely, warmly and genuinely. Her expression in this photo is halfway-WTF.

Last thing: the palace announced Kate’s first event for 2019 too – she’ll make a trip to King Henry’s Walk Community Garden in Islington next Tuesday.

William didn’t sit in the helicopter, he flew it there. I mean, he was sitting while he was flying, but there was a purpose.

    • Natalie S says:

Was he just a passenger or was he one of the pilots? I couldn’t tell from the People article.

      • Annie. says:

He was the pilot, though he had a copilot with him too.

      • Natalie S says:

I think he can’t pilot solo so it would make sense that if he was a copilot with another pilot. Where did you read that? Richard Palmer said something about taking the helicopter out for a spin but after his recent emotional shenanigans, I like having a second source for what he says.

–Oh, I just read Emily Andrews’ tweet. I think she’s usually accurate.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

He was a co-pilot, apparently he wasn’t experienced enough (read: fly hours) to pilot on his own.

    • Roux says:

Whether he sat in it or flew it, the fact that for the most part they get to count turning up, shaking hands and smiling for the cameras as work and then barely actually do any ‘work’ annoys me so much. William, Kate, Meghan and Harry have really got to do better. They spend insane amounts of money. Most people in the UK work about 38 hours a week. These four maybe do an event or two per week (and have plenty of weeks doing nothing). An event isn’t even a full days work. They’re only usually there for an hour or two. I really wonder what they do with their time, other than shopping.

      • livealot says:

@ROUX – Agree 1000%. If that’s “work” I’d be “working” every fkn day.

      • Cerys says:

Couldn’t agree more. It must be lovely to do a few hours “work” a month and get paid handsomely for it.

      • Nibbi says:

But you forget! There’s all that clothing-choosing, hair, and makeup before each event, so it’s more than just an hour or two! It could even be three!! … At least for the women… Oh! And they have to stay thin!

  2. Cidy says:

William looks good here! It looks like his pants were actually tailored right.

    Happy b day to Kate!

  3. Erinn says:

I like the photo of her. It might not be the most stunning photo in the world… but I think it looks natural. I also think William looks pretty decent in these photos. I know his constant blue wearing can be annoying to some people but I have a habit of buying the same basic shades of clothing too haha.

I find weekday birthdays are usually low key – at least for me. I’m more likely to want to do something ‘more’ on the weekend closes to my birthday and just have my favorite food or something on my actual day of birth.

    • JanetDR says:

I heartily agree on the Kate photo! It is not a formal or guarded expression and I think she looks real and beautiful in a way I haven’t seen before.

  4. Chaine says:

That header pic of him is not so good. I guess he’s given up on shaving his head and has reverted to the wispy combover?

  5. Thirsty Hirsty says:

Here I thought purple was the colour of royalty…….turns out, it’s navy blue…….maybe I’m royal and just don’t know it?

  6. TheOtherOne says:

Mind blown. I never knew Sarah H. Sanders and I were the same age.

    • Giddy says:

I would never have thought that SHS was that young. Then there’s Kelly Ann Conway who is 51 and usually looks like the crypt keeper with a bad weave.

      • bros says:

that is insane. I thought SHS was at least 45. had no idea she was 36 or 37 (my age). mind blown. I guess when you make a deal with the devil, it results in premature ageing.

      • Redgrl says:

I’m in my late 40’s and thought SHS was older than me…

  7. KidV says:

How tall is that man next to Prince Bill? He must be 6’5″ or more? Not often do you see Will looking up at someone.

I think that’s a good picture of Kate. More natural than most.

  8. tori says:

Kate looks very natural and pretty.

  9. Katie Keen says:

I know he isn’t popular, but I have to give it to Richard Palmer for keeping his Twitter feed interesting.

  10. liriel says:

Yeah it’s a nice picture of Kate but it shows that the palace does what it wants.. She had many better pictures that could make it. If I were Kate I’d be displeased. It’d be a vanity thing for me 😛

  11. Nibbi says:

I think Kate looks great in that picture. God forbid, natural… I think it’s nice that they chose one where she looks like a natural human being with a bit of a crease here and there.

On the other hand, >snark< why are we analyzing the crap out of the relative attractiveness or quality of Kate's photo and hardly noticing how GONE Wills' good looks are? He was a downright hearthrob not all that long ago… gorgeous, gorgeous teenager, hot through his twenties… now, erm… It's not just the hair

Shoot, she looks amazing, and we're picking her attractiveness apart and eagle-eyed on it. He's a dude, and, like, the fact that he's gotten ugly is not even on the radar. It's downright sexist. Can we be equal-opportunity superficial gossipers, please? 😉

  13. Vanessa says:

I think that photo is far more flattering than the crazy-eye manic horse smile they often catch her in.
