US Weekly has shocking footage of Michael Jackson’s head catching on fire

Us Weekly has obtained exclusive footage of the fire that – some would say – was the beginning of Michael Jackson’s medical problems. In 1984 he was shooting a video for Pepsi when a pyrotechnic went off too soon. You can see Jackson’s hair catch fire, which he does not realize. He makes it all the way down the stairs of the stage before he’s tackled by a group of men with a fire extinguisher. It appears like he’s either trying to fight them off (probably because he still didn’t realize his hair was on fire, and a bunch of people were rushing at him) or is panicking. The video is immensely disturbing – a feeling that’s enhanced by the creepy music it’s set to.

New footage has emerged of Michael Jackson’s harrowing Pepsi commercial accident 1984 that set the late singer’s hair on fire, causing severe burns to his face and scalp — and is said to be the start of his reported painkiller addiction, according to Us Weekly.

Jackson was filming the commercial with his brothers at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium on Jan. 27, 1984. The video, obtained by Us, shows that pyrotechnics were set off too early at the start of the sixth take, setting Jackson’s hair on fire.

Jackson is unaware of the flames at first and continues dancing before people rushed to his aid. The King of Pop suffered second- and third-degree burns to his face and scalp. He was prescribed different pain medications, which kick-started his addiction and obsession with plastic surgery, Us reports, adding that the singer — who was at the height of his career at the time — was “never the same” afterward.

[From the Seattle P.I.]

Last week Celebitchy reported that Jackson’s dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein told Larry King that Michael was using tissue expanders in his skull as a result of this accident.

KING: Did he have hair?

KLEIN: He had lost a great deal of it. You forget this first fire…

KING: That was the Pepsi fire, right?

KLEIN: Yes. But then what happened is he used a great deal of what are called tissue expanders in his scalp, which are balloons that grow up — blow up the scalp. And then what they do is they try to cut out the scar.

Well, because he had lupus, what happened is every time they would do it, the bald spot would keep enlarging.

So, I mean, he went through a lot of painful procedures with these tissue expanders until I put a stop to it. I said no more tissue expanders, because he had to wear a hat all the time and it was really painful for him.

[From CNN Transcripts]

The way Klein describes it, it sounds like Jackson must have been in excruciating pain. I think most people have heard about the Pepsi commercial accident off and on, but actually seeing the footage for the first time was more upsetting than I expected. Probably because it seemed like such a turning point in Jackson’s life. He still had some of his best work ahead of him, but also a lot of scandal and heartache like most of us will hopefully never have to endure. But it’s like, right up to this point, you’re seeing THE Michael Jackson, when it was just about the phenomenon. And in a second, he’s about to start having pill addiction, cosmetic surgery addiction, all sorts of mental health issues, abuse scandals. It’s just a very strange moment to watch.

JayBird, I totally agree with you about the surrealism of watching this moment in MJ’s career.

  2. Frenchie says:

It’s almost like watching somebody die. But I guess he might have been fragile (ex childhood) already and that was the point break.
You never know what can hit you, we are one corner away from crazyness.

  3. Jenny says:

Wow I didn’t need to see that. No one does. That is horrible. US is awful.

  4. Mme X says:

I don’t get it. What good comes of showing this tragic footage? Who wins? How does this help anyone? Shame on US. Sick sick sick.

  5. Enonymous says:

Poor Michael Jackson, you can’t help feeling sorry for him, especially when looking at the video above were you can see how slim and almost fragile looking he was.

  6. JoGirl says:

Just another heartbreaking chapter in the sick, sad life of Michael Jackson. I wonder whether the accident was the result of human error, and if so whether the person responsible still feels bad about it.

  7. pebbles says:

    just sad.

  8. Hieronymus Grex says:

and this is being brought out now because……

    SICKENING VOYEURISM. STOP IT.

  9. Shane Gentry says:

I don’t know. I think it’s allright to put it out now. Puts things in perspective. Gives people a better understanding of what the guy went through.

  10. viper says:

That wasnt so bad and it didnt look like his face just the back of his head. I expected ALOT worse.

  11. Jen says:

I’ve read the comments so I haven’t watched the video – really don’t want to contribute to the ghoulish voyeurism the media insist on participating in

  12. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

It’s not as bad as these comments lead me to believe. And I remember seeing clips of this a few years back.

  13. irl says:

I couldn’t bear to watch it so I won’t. I cringe when Homer gets hurt on the Simpson’s so I know I couldn’t take it.
    R.I.P. MJ

  14. teehee says:

Well it bring empathy and understanding that people lacked befre seeing the footage— so I think in a way its a gd thing fr tem to show it.
It makes you realize something about him that before we were unaware of.

  15. gg says:

Omg, I’d never seen the back view – I thought it was on the side. How awful for him. As far as watching it, reality can be very cruel, but it’s still reality. Some people like to see the whole story, even if it’s hard to watch sometimes.

  16. Kati says:

This made me cry. I don’t know why I even watched it. He was so beautiful.

  17. wow says:

I wished I hadn’t watched this and I’m sorry that I did. Wow.

  18. Shay says:

I thought Pepsi promised to keep the tape under wraps. I hadn’t intended to watch it but “The Insider” was on when I got home. They kept showing it over and over and over…

  19. Shane Gentry says:

I commented earlier but I thought I’d expand on this.

While the video is hard to watch I believe it’s important for people to see it so they fully understand why Michael Jackson became a drug addict and eventually a plastic surgery addict.

The pain involved in those kind of third degree burns and surgeries would easily lead to pain killer addiction. Then you throw in his skin condition and you have an absolute recipe for disaster.

  20. Zoe says:

To the person who said that it didn’t ‘look that bad’ and that you expected far worse, wait until you get even a slight burn from a pot on a stove and imagine that the size of the palm of your head on your scalp and face. I can’t imagine anyone watching that video and not feeling empathy. Disturbing.

  21. fizXgirl314 says:

hmmmm, has the video been removed cuz i don’t see it.

  22. oakdsfklj says:

that made me almost cry…he was in all his glory, dancing in his unbelievable stage persona, and all of a sudden guys surround him and he probably thought he was being attacked at first, then dragged of stage in shame. That is just terrible- and US is messed up for exploiting that.

  23. nelly says:

Ooooouuu, horrible. I didn’t need to see that, especially the end when i realized that he was trully bald after the burns. Just ruined my day! I feel sorry for him.
By the way, anyone knows if Pepsi gave some kind of atonement to MJ after this acident?
    They should.

  24. prissa says:

Wow, that was really sad. It’s like he already had a complex about his looks, so I’m sure he questioned “why me” and believed it was because he was ugly and thought it made him uglier.

I really feel sorry for MJ. I truly hope that all those allegations were false and that he’s in Heaven now and at peace.

You know we all have salvation thru Christ and eventually, hopefully we all will be with the Father & Son in glory when this is all over.

    RIP

  25. yadira says:

He looks in disbelief at the end and is grabbing his head. So sad, No one should have to endure that type of physical and emotional pain.

    The King of Pop, R.I.P.

  26. beatrix says:

Oh my God, this brings my tears back. How could US exploit this? Who wins? Been trying to let it go but this is just too much. Yes, he was so beautiful. Inside and outside. RIP, Michael Jackson. I love you now and I love you then.

  27. SolitaryAngel says:

Oh man. I had forgotten how dynamic he was. This video is so sad; Kaiser, you’re exactly right about this one moment changing the course of his life.

It DOES seem surreal that it was caught on film; how many of us can say the same? That a major event in our lives exists outside our memory? Or that we even recognize it at all?

Sadly for Michael, no one knew how this would affect him and that’s why he’s dead.

  28. Bella says:

There were many photos published at the time of the accident, but, the rear view is far more graphic and at the end you can see poor Michael has gone into shock when he reaches up to touch his severely burned scalp.

Those that feel this footage is not so bad clearly do not realize how excruciatingly painful 2nd and 3rd degree burns are! The worst most people experience is minor burns from curling irons, hair straighteners or stove elements, which usually occur in less than 2 seconds and do no lasting harm and STILL hurt like hell…It seems more than slightly heartless to deny compassion to a burn victim, famous or not!

I have always loved Michael, always will and pray that he has found the peace that eluded him in life.

  29. ab says:

oh, so sad! that must have been horribly painful, seems Pepsi did give MJ 1.5 mil which he donated to a charity…may his soul rest in peace.

  30. malena says:

that was sad. rest in peace michael

  31. nj says:

Anyone who thinks that this “wasn’t so bad” is a f*cktard. His head was engulfed in FIRE. Viper- turn on your stove and hold your hand above it-how long do you think you could touch that flame before it “wasn’t so bad” anymore? I once had a second degree burn on my leg-the pain was tremendous, even for an area that does not have as many nerve endings as the scalp. It blistered and bubbled and was a weeping open wound for a long time. I cannot fathom what Michael suffered, and this video brought tears to my eyes. I was lucky, my leg healed clean and the painkillers never got their hooks in me, but there but for the grace of God…
Regardless of his addiction and troubles, I believe Michael Jackson did far more good on earth than bad; we have no right to judge him. And I bet that in the Sight of The Lord, he’s square with the house…

  32. Ben says:

second degree burns are really painful. Third degree burns aren’t, a third degree burn, burns the nerves away. You don’t feel anything (until later when the treatment comes, etc).

  33. ANA says:

    Szkoda chłopaka…

  34. fizXgirl314 says:

i wonder if people will stop drinking pepsi as retribution…

  35. dubdub2000 says:

Man that video freaked me out. I didnt think you would actually see everything so clearly. His head just got engulfed in one second: POOF! With all the products he had in his hair back in the 80s it was so flamable! And why wasn’t there anyone with a fire extinguisher near by? I find that very strange. It’s standard procedure now when pyro is involved. Maybe it’s due to this incident. I never realized his burns were so extensive and right on the top of his head! the whole thing gone and with 2nd and 3rd degree burns. + back in the 80s they didnt have the burn repair technology and skin grafs they have today. He didnt even realize he was on fire for the longest while. Darn.
He already had issues about his appearance, this + the pain must have indeed pushed him over the edge. After that he was never the same. And for goodness’ sake if on top of that he had Lupus as reported! Seriously! How much can one person take!
    RIP MJ RIP

  36. Nhaxa says:

Why don’t you just leave Micheal alone, especially now that he has passed on? He might have lived a weird life but that’s no reason to keep on saying things about him and no reason at all to show this video. No one’s perfect. Shame on you.

  37. tt says:

u know the (only)good part of this story? that MJ donated the money he got from pepsi because of this accident to charity….hes so giving, which is why i love him forever…
