Keira Knightley in Chanel at the London premiere of ‘The Aftermath’: unflattering?

The World Premiere of 'The Aftermath' held at the Picturehouse Central

Keira Knightley has been contractually obligated to wear Chanel for years now. She doesn’t have to wear Chanel on *every* red carpet, so sometimes she mixes it up with Valentino or… I can’t think of another label she’s worn? It’s usually Chanel. And usually, Chanel gives Keira some of their best stuff, cute little cocktail dresses or fabulous suits or intricate, vaguely twee gowns. This Chanel gown, at last night’s London premiere of The Aftermath, is such a hard pass for me. It’s kind of terrible on her, right? With that face and that slim, model-like figure, you really have to TRY to make Keira look thick-waisted and dull. Which is what this gown does.

Update: Oh god I wrote this up before I saw the reports of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing. He was brilliant and weird and crazy (but not always the best designer, see: this gown).

I’ve talked about how I want to see The Aftermath, even though it looks like the release date got pushed back to the February graveyard of film releases. Initially, I’m almost positive this was supposed to be a late entry to the end-of-year awards season extravaganza. They must have pushed it back after it tested poorly or something. The reviews of it aren’t great, despite the prestige names: Ridley Scott directed it, Keira stars alongside Alexander Skarsgard and Jason Clarke. It’s a WWII-era tragisexy romance. Here’s the trailer:

Weirdly, at the premiere, Alex looks like he dressed in character as a banker from the 1950s.

I love this look!!! Although the silhouette could be done better.

    • Josephine says:

I like it as well – just looks like it didn’t fit as well as it should right at the top, like there is a bit too much fabric there. Would have liked to see her hair up. I think she needed a bit of extra skin with so much dress.

    • Pandy says:

I like it too!! Wish I could pull it off. And, you know, had a premiere to wear it too …

RIP Karl Lagerfeld, he was a massive influence for years in fashion.

*was obsessed 🙁 RIP, Karl 🙁

  4. minx says:

At first glance this dress doesn’t look like it should be so bad, but the silhouette is just not flattering at all.

  5. WingKingdom says:

It’s a lovely dress for another type of event. It’s so conservative and muted that it doesn’t translate well to a red carpet.

  6. Rose says:

    Rest easy Karl 💕

  7. Lightpurple says:

My thoughts and prayers are with Choupette at this difficult time.

I don’t hate this dress although I’m wondering if the bulkiness might be a new baby.

  8. Lucy2 says:

    The dress is OK.
I want to see this movie, regardless of the reviews- need more Skarsgard!!

  9. Beth says:

Dresses shaped like that look like something a little girl would wear to a Christmas party. I’m not a fan of the layered lampshade style dress

  10. Kendra says:

Her hair and make up haven’t been good for a long time imo but this is improvement I feel. I do think the dress is fun even if not maybe the best color for her.

  11. SM says:

From the trailer above it looks like an attempt at Atonement remake at least stylistically
Some shots literally feel like they are pulled from Atonement.

  12. Case says:

I like the dress, but the bust area needs to be tightened up, I think. It’s just a bit ill-fitting, but an overall nice look. I like Keira’s taste most of the time.

I actually kinda wonder if she’s expecting again? Only because that looks like a dress made to hide a bump.

LOVE her makeup. Love it. Wish I knew which shades she uses of lipstick and blush. So perfect on her.

  14. Liz says:

A zero-waist on women we see so often in the modern era are always a mistake. As a portrait painter, I’ve found that the waist is the most defining and striking characteristic of a woman. Point for point, the waist is and has been the most important element in women’s fashion in any era..except sometimes modern designers ignore it as they do ignore other elements too. There are many easy ways to suggest a waist even if a woman doesn’t have much of one, no one is excluded.

Alex needs to stop with dad-vibe sweater vests. Not that he doesn’t look good. He looks fantastic. Just. No on this.

  16. Flying fish says:

    I really like the dress!

  17. Alexandra Boulianne says:

Keira is not big on sexy, I think this dress would have been strange on someone else but fit her style and personality perfectly. I like it!

BTW Correction: Ridley Scott is producer on the film, not the director. It’s James Kent.

Saw this trailer before a screening of Cold War last weekend with my pal who LOVES both of these guys. We are going to see it no matter what the reviews are!
