Isaac Hempstead Wright: Bran Stark is now ‘the arch-nemesis of the Night King’

Isaac Hempstead-Wright at Firenze Fantasy

SPOILERS for Game of Thrones

Of course there’s part of me that wishes that Bran Stark could just put down the Three-Eyed Raven for a moment and just BE Bran Stark and enjoy seeing Jon Snow again and all of that. And to those who say Kit Harington is a bad actor, Kit pretty much did all of the emotional heavy lifting in the entire “Winterfell” episode. His tenderness towards Bran and Arya was just beautiful and touching, especially considering Bran is basically an all-seeing robot and Arya is an assassin. But Isaac Hempstead Wright – the young actor who plays Bran – is utterly charming, and he’s trying to make sure that the Three-Eyed Raven still has a touch of Bran’s humanity too. Isaac chatted with THR after the episode aired, and I loved this interview so much. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

Bran & Jaime Lannister’s reunion: “I think we’ve all anticipated that this was going to happen. Bran’s known everything [for quite some time], and so it was inevitable that he would be waiting around creepily for Jaime to turn up…. I read the first episode, and it was so amazing. We’re coming back after two years since the last you saw any of these characters. The key is to get people back into the Game of Thrones universe, bringing them back to all of the new alliances and so forth. The cliffhanger at the end? It’s just genius. It’s the exact same cliffhanger we had in [the series premiere]. It’s a really neat, cyclical thing that the final first episode mirrors the very first episode.

Whether he changed his approach to playing Bran: “More or less, it’s pretty much the same. But I was conscious of trying to have slightly more wisdom. I was trying to make him a little bit more like Max von Sydow’s Three-Eyed Raven. In season seven, I felt like he was just overwhelmed. He had just had everything downloaded into his head. He hasn’t quite come to terms with it yet. My approach in season eight is that he’s slightly more in control of his powers, sitting there like the wise old man who knows what’s going on, and needs to explain to these petty mortals what the real important thing is.

Bran convincing Sam to tell Jon about his real parents: “Because Bran’s not stupid. He might not be hugely emotional, but he does have a sense of how the world works. He knows it’s not going to be the best reveal to his brother — or what is it, now? His cousin? — who he hasn’t seen in many years. What’s he going to say? “By the way, you’re shagging your aunt and you’re the heir to the Iron Throne.” Bran is wise enough to know he’s not the right person to deliver the news. That news has to come from Sam. It needs a very human touch, and Sam is one of the most human characters in this. He’s sweet, he’s vulnerable, and he’s best friends with Jon. Jon needs to hear it from someone like that. He can’t be reactionary. He needs to take it at face value.

Whether he thinks Bran even cares about Jaime Lannister at this point: “You know, I’m not sure. In a sense, it’s just so irrelevant to Bran, really. His sole focus is that he wants the living to survive. He’s on the side of the living. He’s the ancient arch-nemesis of the Night King. He’s so far beyond any petty squabbling or wanting to get revenge or a comeuppance on someone. He doesn’t view the world like that anymore. He just views things as timelines that intersect and have to end up in certain places. I think from a story point of view, it’s amazing to see it happen. Me, as Isaac? I was thrilled to see that reunion, because it’s such a poignant moment, and such a cool thing for Jaime to come back here and realize that Bran is not Bran anymore — he’s f–king terrifying. In terms of Bran, though? I don’t think he really cares. It’s just not on his list of priorities.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

That last part was fascinating to me… “His sole focus is that he wants the living to survive. He’s on the side of the living. He’s the ancient arch-nemesis of the Night King.” I’ve read the theory that the war between the living and the dead will happen and that’s the main story, but that the Night King has another reason for marching towards Winterfell, and it’s because the Night King is specifically targeting someone. Is the Night King targeting Bran because the Three-Eyed Raven is his arch-nemesis? Or is the Night King targeting someone else, like Baby Sam, the baby offering who got away? Lord, I missed this series.

“He’s the *ancient* arch-nemesis of the Night King.” Hummmm…
I have been saying for a while that he is the night King’s target… It is an ancient threat… hummm…

    • Pringer says:

the question i keep asking is why? asin why the enemity between both parties i seriously will like to know

      • Incredulous says:

        There’s a few theories, basically:

A)All nuance from the books has been lost, so Walker baddies versus the living (goodies)

        B) The White Walkers cannot overcome their programming and so are stuck trying to kill the First Men (living). Also, it might be they cannot overcome their programming because they are stuck with the (current and so far only) Night’s King.

C)The White Walkers have something going on we have not yet seen and the show runners decided to leave it real late in the day for the reveal.

      • Miss M says:

I really think Bran is Bran the builder.
In the “hold the door” episode, he showed not only he can go back to the past, but that he can affect the past for a better outcome in the present/future.
What IF he will do the same thing going back to the time the Mad King wanted to “burn them all” … to destroy the wights, white walkers, etc. Isn’t he supposed to be quiet? Why is he telling everyone what he can see? And the Night King knows he can see things as they are happening. If he uses his greensight, he can predict the Night King’s plan.

      • Pringer says:

oh wow thank you all for your replies

      • Miss M says:

@Incredulous: thank you for sharing these theories!
@Pringer: remember that Bran can warg as well. What IF he finds a way to control the Night King directly and, consequently white walkers and wights?

      • Pringer says:

        @Miss M
This is so true and i am very sure the night king knows this too and is trying to get to Bran before Bran acts

      • Megan says:

Old Nan didn’t name drop Bran the Builder for no good reason. Bran built the wall, he and the Night King have been doing battle for centuries.

    • ReginaGeorge says:

When Bran warged into Willis and turned him into Hodor, at that moment I said to myself, Bran is literally the MOST powerful person in their world right now. He knows or will know almost everything, and can go back in time and affect people. Ned also heard him when he went back to the Tower of Joy scene. We’re all sleeping on Bran.

      • Miss M says:

Yes! The old man who was the three eyed raven then reprimanded Bran to not interfere with the past.

    • Miss M says:

@Megan: That’s correct. But also Bran the builder was always Bran’s favorite stories…

  2. styla says:

I think he’s coming for his Night Queen who was kept in the crypts of Winterfell. I am not sure if the show has time to cover that whole story or not. I am pretty sure though he’s not coming for Little Sam. As if he would try to amass an army of the undead for years and blast through the wall just for one of Craster’s kids. He’s got a big motivation to not only take over the world of the living – and killing Bran to be able to do that – but I think he wants his Night Queen the most.

    • Charlotte says:

Do you mean Lyanna StarK? If so, you may share my theory about who the Night King is.

      • Dttimes2 says:

So are you saying you think the night king is Raegar Targarian? But wasn’t he created hundreds of years before their time?

      • Digital Unicorn says:

@Dttimes2 – The first Night King is dead, he was defeated long ago. The theory is the current Night King is a recent incarnation of him and given that he can ride a dragon (only Valarians could ride dragons) its been speculated that the NK is a Targ. And esp the sigil that was left behind at Umber made out of limbs etc.. – its the Targ family sigil.

There is def more to the NK’s story than we currently know at this point, the next few episodes are going to be very interesting.

And as others have said his main target is Bran who is now the 3 eyed raven.

      • styla says:

That I am undecided about…. could be Rhaegar and Lyanna… or could be the 13th commander… Azor Ahai himself. Nissa Nissa, his wife, the Night Queen.

To those who are confused, the original Night King was killed by Azor Ahai a very long time ago. He had to kill his wife to forge his sword that killed the original night king. He eventually found her undead/wight self and they reigned terror on the north for 13 years until the Starks and the Wildlings fought him. He was banished beyond the wall to the lands of Always Winter and his Night Queen was deanimated and put in the crypts.

      • M.A.F. says:

I like the stuff @styla & @Digital Unicorn said surrounding the NK. However, we only have six episodes this season and if they were to go in this direction, then I feel a whole episode would have to be devoted to what they just posted & I don’t see that happening.

    • juliebox says:

Wait. Wait. Wait. I have to sit down. That just blew my MIND.

    • Myrtle says:

Maybe Cersei wants to become the Night Queen? She would live forever (even though she’d be dead) and have ultimate power. Sounds about right.

    • Maum says:

He can’t be Rhaegar-we see him being created in one Bran’s visions and he is one of the First Men.
The Walkers and the Long Night pre-date the Targaryens by hundreds of years.

I’m wondering if the Walkers exist as long as dragons do- they’re meant to cancel each out, fire against ice.
Maybe the children created the walkers to protect their lands against dragons?

      • Digital Unicorn says:

IIRC from the books, the children created the NK and thus the White Walkers to destroy the first men who were invading and taking over their land. They came to regret it as their creation turned on them.

  3. LadyMTL says:

Maybe the NK figures he (it?) can take care of several things by going to Winterfell: getting rid of his nemesis / biggest threat, getting the sacrifice, wiping out another army, and so on.

If I had to choose one, though, I’d say the main focus of the attack would be to negate any threat that Bran might pose, and destroying Winterfell in the process would be a bonus.

  4. Jenns says:

I also believe Bran is his target. The only person we have seen the NK kill is the first Three Eyed Raven. My theory is that those symbols, The Three Eyed Raved, the Children of the Forest and the Night King/White Walkers are all connected and that Bran will work out that connection and find out how you can finally destroy the NK. I don’t think dragonglass of Valerian steel will bring him down.

As for Jaime, we see he’s on trial in Winterfell and I think Bran will be on his side. As much as I love the idea of Bran being a petty b*tch and waiting in that courtyard for Jaime to show up, I also don’t think Bran is cracking jokes and meant what he said about Jaime being an old friend. My guess is that he will see all the events of his life as critical to him becoming The Three Eyed Raven and possibly saving humanity.

    • Maum says:

Yes, that would explain why Jaime looks so shocked in the preview.
The little boy he so casually threw out of a window is now saving him from the wrath of the dragon queen.

    • Lightpurple says:

Jaimie’s on trial in the promo for next week but the trailers show Jaimie fighting in a battle so someone is going to argue on his behalf, likely Bran and Brienne. UNLESS he’s ordered to execution, Arya’s the executioner with her bow and arrow and she takes his face for some reason- that’s unlikely, so someone argues for him and they decide to keep him around for the battle. Isaac’s words here about fighting for the living are similar to Jaimie’s in one of the season trailers.

      • Kristen says:

I think Arya will kill Bron-who Cersei sent to kill Jaime & Tyrion – and take his face so she can go into Kings Landing to finish those on her list. She’ll take the Hound and maybe Sansa or others as an “offering” to the Queen and it’ll end up a blood bath. I almost wonder if the Hound is the Valonquar-I don’t know if it says anything about it being Cersei’s little brother-it just says “little brother” and that’s what the hound is to the Mountain-so the Hound defeats the mountain and kills Cersei by choking her to death. I also wondered if Valonqar is like the other high valerian words- that aren’t engendered, so maybe Arya or even Sansa kill Cersei, as the little sister. I totally agree with the theories that it’s Bran going back in time who drives the Mad King to Madness…So many theories, so little time!

  5. Lucy says:

All the memes have been genius, that’s for sure. IHW deserves more attention!

  6. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

This is exactly how I felt after the first episode. Jaime might have soiled his pants upon seeing Bran, and yes Bran sat there waiting for this reunion, but he’s hovering above the realm at this point and attacking the thing that initiated his quest isn’t part of the itinerary.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I also think Bran, Targaryans and Starks are interwoven with the realm’s ancient history. And anything, really, can happen. Hell, Bran can create a paradox if he so wishes, and every action built upon lies……….

Will there be a conclusive conclusion? Will HBO try to suggest a ‘cold’ opening for the next series?

  7. Lightpurple says:

It was The 3 Eyed Ravens that the Night King was coming for when they attacked the cave. The old 3 eyed raven had to quickly pass on everything he knew to Bran and everyone else existed just to get Bran to safety. Leaf made that clear to Meera and then she sacrificed herself by blowing herself and part of the cave up. The Night King who entered went straight to the old 3 eyed raven to kill him.

  8. GoTDang says:

Bran can presumably control the dragons.

    • Incredulous says:

I’m looking forward to him warging into undead Viserion while the Night’s King is flying.

    • wildflower says:

Maybe he can control Viserion or warg into him. All these theories are amazing and now I need to go process!

  9. Originaltessa says:

Jaime is going to be questioned, primarily to affirm his loyalty to their side, but I doubt he’ll be tried. Not really. They went to Kings Landing with the wight to get Cersei and Jaime on their side, it’d be pretty scummy to put him on trial after he travels all that way to join them, regardless of his past crimes. Bran doesn’t care because he’s not Bran anymore, and he can see Jaime’s redemption. I think Jaime will be humbled and touched by their acceptance of him and he will leave Cersei behind for good.

    • huckle says:

I hope so. Not that Jaime has been a good person, but Cersei really treats him like crap. At the minimum, she’s always cheated on him. I hope he can detach from her for good.

  10. IlsaLund says:

Can someone answer a question? Does Bran have the ability to see anything in the future or can he only see things in the present and the past?
