‘Big Little Lies 2’ Episode 2 ‘Tell-Tale Heart’ was absolutely bonkers

Chelsea Flower Show 2019

SPOILERS for Big Little Lies 2.

When the full-length trailer for Big Little Lies 2 came out, I shared my concerns that the second series was not only unnecessary, but possibly exploitative and damaging to real survivors of domestic violence. The first series ended with the five main women acting in self-defense to kill Perry Wright, Celeste’s abusive husband. They all – bizarrely – decided to keep part of their actions a secret, which was… not great. I mean, I understood the need for some secrecy, especially on Ziggy’s paternity and how Shailene Woodley’s character Jane just learned about Perry. But the core of their actions really was about self-defense: Perry was going to kill Celeste and he was hurting the other women too. Bonnie pushed him as a way to end it. Just say that. I don’t know why everything hinged on “he slipped!”

The first episode aired two Sundays ago and when I finally sat down to watch it, days later, I admit to being drawn in yet again to these characters. They added Meryl Streep as “Mary Louise,” Perry’s mother, who comes down to help Celeste in the wake of Perry’s death. Mary Louise is a terrible person and Meryl’s fake teeth are driving me up the wall. Anyway, I watched last night’s episode (“Tell-Tale Hearts”) and dear God, I’ve been completely sucked in. It’s SUCH a soap opera.

I’m not going to do a full-on Game of Thrones-style recap, but I did want to talk about some highlights. Here we go:

Madeline’s daughters are JUST LIKE HER. They are both nosy gossips and they are completely driving the narrative and it’s crazy. Chloe – who is a second-grader – overheard her mom on the phone and completely figured out who Ziggy’s father was and that Ziggy has two half-brothers and CHLOE TOLD THEM. She told Ziggy and Max and the other one. Then, to make matters worse, Madeline’s teenage daughter was trying to throw Madeline’s affair back in her face and ED HEARD. And now Ed and Madeline are splitting up. How good is Adam Scott in this role, btw? He’s really, really good.

Renata is not going to be NOT rich. Renata’s husband (Dude-face, I don’t care) gets arrested for securities fraud and it turns out that they’re going to lose almost all of their money. I mostly wish Renata would fall off a cliff, but Laura Dern’s absolute hissy fit about money in the jail was enough to get her an Emmy.

Bonnie’s mother is amazing. Her name is Elizabeth and she’s bringing some fascinating dynamic to the story – she sees Bonnie and quickly assesses everything that’s happened and we also find out that Bonnie and Elizabeth have some sort of vision/sixth sense/predictive power. Maybe just a strong emotional intelligence, but we’ll see. Their scenes were amazing.

Mary Louise needs to go. I can already see where this is headed and it pisses me off that Celeste doesn’t see it too – Mary Louise is going to build a case to take custody of her grandsons. I can see her calmly assessing all of Celeste’s actions and lies and stories and she’s going to get a lawyer and sue for custody, and she hopes that it will be easier for her to get custody if she can get Celeste arrested for Perry’s “murder.”

Honestly, though, I cannot believe how EPISODE 2 was *that* jam-packed. Now everybody knows about Ziggy and Jane, now Ed knows about Madeline’s affair, now Mary Louise has already revealed that she thinks Celeste killed Perry and now Renata is not-rich WTF are they going to do in Episode 3, my God.

This second season isn’t good IMO

    • isabelle says:

It is very basic cable material.

      • Starkiller says:

So was the first series. I did not make it past the first two episodes. Can not believe all the acclaim it’s received. It is really more suited to the Lifetime channel.

  2. Leriel says:

God, I love this series. And I agree, it’s mostly Oscar winning actresses screaming “get in the car”.
Meryl Streep will definitely get Emmy nomination for this.

  3. Snowslow says:

I only watched the first series and hated it so not gonna watch this one – but hell it sounds like a Mexican soap opera! Jaysus!
Also, I suggest that the ending should be Streep’s character being offed by Bonnie. Groundhog Day style but a different victim.

    • dj says:

I “hate” watched the first season (the music drove me crazy). I figured it had to go somewhere and finally did in the final episode. But sorry not in for this season. Love the recap tho! Thanks for that.

  4. Jenns says:

I’m loving this season so far. Laura Dern is amazing and I still think this is Nicole Kidman’s best work.

  5. Mia4s says:

Laura Dern is crazy entertaining to watch but I have to give props to Nicole Kidman too. And Adam Scott! Who knew?! The second season is unnecessary, but dammit I’m hooked.

I am curious to know who in the makeup department hates Shailene Woodley. The hair I assume is a character choice, but why does she look orange and patchy and generally awful? It was really noticeable last night.

    • Lightpurple says:

Because she’s poor. That’s how they illustrate her poverty in contrast to the women who have money on the show.

    • Lightpurple says:

Her turn from “I’m the cover off a magazine article about powerful women!” to Scarlet O’Hara “as God is my witness, I’ll never go hungry again!” rage was fantastic.

ETA This was in response to a comment about Laura Dern below that landed in the wrong place

    • Tanguerita says:

i think that’s the way she ALWAYS looks.

  6. Busyann says:

I caught up with season 1 just before season 2 premiered and am obsessed! I dont watch much tv but make an effort for Dateline and ordered HBO just to watch this. I love it. I totally see Mary Louise being killed by the end of the season and then we will have another Big Little Lie. And I didnt like Adam Scott last season, but this season he is great.

  7. Jenns says:

Also, what happened to Perry’s brother? Did Perry do something to him?

    • Lindsnowork says:

I think Perry killed him, that’s why Celeste yelled something to the effect of “you won’t be like him!” When one of the twins was beating up the other.

      • lucy2 says:

I think that was just more about him being violent.
That was an interesting tidbit they threw in there, about the brother dying, so I think it’ll come back in some way. Would explain some of Mary Louise’s personality too.

      • isabelle says:

It was more along the lnes she oens’t want then to hit people like their Dad hit her. Remember they knew the abuse was happening.

    • sunny says:

We don’t know if Perry did something to him. We don’t know much about Perry’s past

    • ReginaGeorge says:

Imo they’re foreshadowing that Perry may have had a hand in his brother’s death or is the reason he is obsessive and controlling a la Hedy in Single White Female.

  8. Lightpurple says:

I’m glad they’re giving Zoe’s Bonnie more to do this season. Last year, she was just portrayed as an annoying second wife to Reese’s character so her rage when she shoved Perry almost came out of nowhere. Filling in her background will make that more understandable.

    • ReginaGeorge says:

Bonnie’s reaction was some kind of PTSD due to past abuse that had been briefly hinted at in an episode in S1. I think her mother has something to do with it judging by Bonnie’s reaction to something her mother said to her that she took offense to.

  9. Ali says:

Mary Louise is totally coming for her grandkids. Those poor boys. I want Jane to take Ziggy far, far away from this mess of a town.
Laura Dern was awesome. Her character is the worst but her performance was brilliant.

    • sunny says:

I really love how Jane and Ziggy are shown consistently as having the best mom/child dynamic. I love how she was honest with him about the assault although it was heartbreaking. I hope she can keep Mary Louise far far away from Ziggy.

  10. Spicecake38 says:

I’m just glad Ed shaved that obviously fake beard

  11. lucy2 says:

    This episode was INTENSE.
I didn’t see the Renata storyline coming, but it’s giving Laura Dern GREAT material. Her kicking him out onto the highway and screaming “Can a woman get a minute!” was epic.
I’m so worried about Bonnie, but glad Zoe has more to do this season too. I liked her mother showing up.
Poor Ed. Adam Scott is killing it. I know it’s Madeline’s fault, but I still feel bad for her too.

Mary Louise is definitely going for custody (and will turn them into mini-Perrys), and I gasped when Celeste said “you aren’t going to be like him!” to the kid in front of her. Nicole is amazing, especially in the therapist scenes.

So much dirt got exposed in this one, it really was crazy!

    • sequinedheart says:

I have to re-watch. It was so good but I have to watch twice (same with last week) because I want to make sure I have all the information!

  12. minx says:

Okay, I’m going to have to watch. Sounds juicy.

  13. EbonyS says:

    Adam Scott is bae.

His face in the doorway shook me. Madeline does not deserve him and Abigail is literally the worst. The cooler than though vibe, the annoying way she speaks to her mom, opening her fat trap and talking ish because that’s all she knows how to do.

Mary Louise. Mary freaking Louise. You know she voted for Trump. How she sat there and basically gaslit Celeste despite her literacy telling him that he beat her? I shuddered.

And Bonnie with her mom. I swear I thought it was my momma coming through the skin. When they went hiking and she talked about how there were no Black people? I was straight clapping. Calling Nathan a dolt? Spilling the tea at dinner? I’m here for the drama.

Shaliene’s scene with Ziggy talking about Perry and “a salt”. Sigh. So hard to watch.

    • Jenns says:

LOL at Mary Louise being a Trump supporter. She totally would be.

And I know that this show won’t be eligible for the Emmy’s until next year, but I hope Adam Scott doesn’t get pushed aside. He was so good last night.

And I love how every time Nathan gets agitated, he takes it out on Ed.

      • DiegoInSF says:

I don’t think she would have voted for the orange menace. She’s a San Franciscan who doesn’t like fast food!

  14. Chloeee says:

Adam Scott ms face in the doorway was amazing, his shaking hands talking to Madeline in the bedroom…heart wrenching and amazingly well done. Kudos. And i cackled at Renata screaming “can a woman get a minute?!” While flipping the bird was just so good. They’re not wasting time but it works with this time frame. Lastly, i was really bugged about the story hinging on him slipping but it would also make sense Madeline would open her mouth and then they had no choice but to stick to the lie

  15. manda says:

ok, I JUST saw the laura dern highway scene and OMFG! I watched it three times. Amazing. So amazing. ETA–I just saw her go pick him up. She should have left him there.

Mary Louise is awful, she stresses me out so much. Someone above mentioned that she is probably going to try to get custody, and maybe, but she’s going to have to show that celeste is unfit and that’s a tough hurdle to jump. Not sure if california has any sort of grandparents’ rights but i’m assuming no. So I have that to least rely upon, hopefully.

I was disappointed that madeline didn’t explain to chloe why her father was mad and that she should not have eavesdropped and then spread news that she OBVIOUSLY knows is highly sensitive. Sure she’s 8 but she is precocious AF and she knew what she was doing. Madeline and Ed need to train that out of her, pronto

  16. Avery says:

The woman that is playing Bonnie’s mother is bringing it! Zoe tried to hold her own. Loved their scenes.

  17. Lori says:

Im finding Nicole’s face really distracting to watch. Otherwise really liking this season so far.

  18. bears says:

I’m enjoying this season so far but I do really wish that the whole plot didn’t hinge on Perry the Douche’s mode of death. Why in the world isn’t “he was beating his wife and being violent with us when we tried to intervene, so I pushed him away and he fell” a good enough reason for what happened (cause it damn well IS a good enough reason). All of the other things we’re watching unravel would still be unraveling even if they had done the obvious thing and just told the truth. It feels so forced and unnecessary.

  19. DT says:

I just watched this episode again and first of all, it’s incredible. But secondly, I CANNOT with Renata’s husband’s track suits.
