At home fitness stuff, a comforting pet bed, and does progesterone cream work?

Amazon_HighWaistYogaPants
From Hecate: I’ve been complaining for a while about the toll menopause is taking on me. I’ve got my progesterone prescription and my mental exercises to grapple with it. But taking off the weight has been rough. When I started perimenopause, my energy nosedived. I went from running four miles a day to barely able to make it two blocks almost overnight. Two years and 15 pounds later, I needed to do something, so I made a few changes and here is what helped me.

From Hecate: Affordable High waist running pants with pockets:
Amazon_RunningPants
Although I invest in good running shoes and jogging bras, I don’t spend a lot of money on the rest. But my old running pants were all falling down because they were too small, and my stomach was no longer flat. So I read up and running sites said to go high waisted to avoid the pants slipping down. These pants run between $19-$25 a pair, fit great, look good and have pockets! They come in a variety of colors and in sizes xx-small to xx-large. They have a 4.6 star rating and an A from Fakespot. I also got these based on recommendations. They are the same style, price and rating, just a different company (I wanted to compare). Both pants come in the capri length but the second pair also comes in a short.

From Hecate: A GPS SmartWatch to track your heart rate, play music and more
Amazon_FitbitIonic
This is an investment at $250. I got the Fitbit Ionic because I needed the music function. (Of course, right after I started running again, my 2007 iPod classic die/d) So I can personally attest to this watch. It’s got a three and a half star rating but I love it. I was stunned by how few steps I take a day – and that’s with my run. I like that this vibrates to remind me to get up every once in a while. Plus, I bought a bunch of bands in different colors to match to my outfits. If you don’t need the music option, many Best Of sites list the FitBit Versa that costs about $200 as a great sports watch. Or, if all you need is a basic tracker, try the FitBit Inspire for under $100.

From Hecate: A portable elliptical to keep active while you’re working
Amazon_InMotion
I got this after I read CB’s Desk Cycle recommendation! Between my desk job (that I love!) and my shorter run, I’m not getting the activity in I should. I’d never even considered a portable option until I saw CB’s post. I’m not a big cyclist/spinner so the elliptical appealed to me, plus it was smaller, so it fit better under my desk. Plus it’s pretty reasonable at $90. It’s made a difference. It is less activity than working out so if this is your only exercise, you will only lose about a pound or two a month. But hey – it’s still a pound! I’m combining it with my morning two mile run and my pants are starting to fit a little better. But what I didn’t expect is that I’m sleeping better. Just make sure you get the ergonomically correct position while using it or your knees will pay. Also, if you use a rolling chair, you need to find a way to anchor it or it’s annoying. This particular model does not track with your fitness tracker, although you can enter it manually. If you want that technology, the $350 Cubii pro does that.

From Hecate: Butt lifting shapewear that doesn’t roll down
Amazon_Smoother
None of the above works overnight, unfortunately. So if you need a little help in the meantime, this smoother is really comfortable and does not roll down. You’re not going to go down a size when you put it on, but at least you can breathe comfortably for under $20. It’s got a four and a half star rating on Amazon and a B from Fakespot. I also got these shaping underwear to help with my muffin top. It’s very light support but for $10, it gets the job done well enough.

From CB: Progesterone cream may help curb menopausal symptoms and hunger
Amazon_Progesterone
I don’t want to make any incredible claims about this cream, but I do think it worked for me. I have been so hungry lately in perimenopause and, like Hecate, I’ve had trouble balancing that with exercise. Since using this cream nightly on my thighs (read the reviews you’re supposed to do that) for just a week I’ve noticed that I’m less hungry! It’s been almost effortless to lose those three pounds that I was struggling with for months. I feel calmer, less anxious and much more peaceful. What’s more is that I used to be on synthetic progesterone and it didn’t work this well. So I highly recommend this cream, which we featured a few weeks ago. It has 4.2 stars, 1,500 ratings and an A from Fakespot. Other women say it works wonders on their anxiety and has helped get their libido back. Please consult your doctor before taking this or any other otc progesterone product.

From CB: A cozy pet bed that your furry companion will love
Amazon_PetBed
I saw a similar “comforting” pet bed on Instagram and sure enough it exists cheaper on Amazon. This cozy pet bed comes in small and medium sizes and in pink and tan. It’s lined with faux fur to make your furry friend feel comfy and relaxed. It has 586 ratings, 4.7 stars and a B from Fakespot. Both cat and dog owners say say it has a lot of cushioning in it and that their pet loves it and took to it immediately. There are so many cute photos of pets in it too!

From CB: A microblading eyebrow pen for a polished look
Amazon_EyeBrowPen
I’m still searching for the holy grail of eyebrow pens/pencils/powders. I like that eyebrow-gel dispensing brush I featured a few weeks ago, the Revlon Colorstay Brow Mousse, and I’m still using that. It gives a full and natural look and goes on quickly. However I’m looking for something more polished and I keep seeing ads for these microblading pens on Instagram. This microblading eyebrow pen by Lusucat is just $10 and comes in four colors. It has 4.1 stars, almost 90 ratings and a C from Fakespot. Women say it saves time, that it stays on but is easily washed off with soap and water, and that it blends well and looks natural.

I love the cream and the portable elliptical trainer idea. Perimenopause has caused me to gain weight this year but it really hit hard a few weeks ago – I started suffering from insomnia and depression, my anxiety increased, my energy decreased, and I got my first hot flashes. I’m meeting with my doctor in a week to discuss anti anxiety meds but I’m going to have to ask about this cream too.

    • Esmom says:

My doctor told me that Venlafaxine, which is an antidepressant that I happen to take for anxiety, is also good for hot flashes. I take a tiny dose so it doesn’t work for my hot flashes but I don’t mind them too much. Something to maybe bring up with your doc. Hang in there, all these changes do get more manageable. 🙂

      • (TheOG)@Jan90067 says:

Be very sure to talk to your doctor about ALL possible side effects from antidepressants for hot flashes! My doctor put me on Effexor when the flashes got bad for me. All good and fine, but no one told me that ONE PERCENT (ONE!!!) can experience passing out from the medication. Well, guess who passed out… TWICE (hitting my head on a wall, and the next time, hard on the bathroom counter). I had NO idea what caused it (never passed out before!).

After almost passing out at work, I ended up in an emergency room. The dr. reported “unexplained blackouts” to the DMV! I had to see a neurologist for an exam, so I wouldn’t lose my drivers’ license. The neurologist said two unexplained blackouts were automatically diagnosed as EPILEPSY!!!! I felt I was living in the Twilight Zone! Obviously, I got another opinion, and THIS doctor looked closely at my med. list, and asked me if I was still taking the Effexor. I told him that my gyno weaned me off it. Then he asked if I had any more episodes of “aura dizziness” or passing out. Nope, not a one. He told me how that is a side effect (rare, hence the 1%), and that was why I blacked out. He wrote that to the DMV, and thankfully, I didn’t lose my license, and more importantly, no more blackouts.

TL:DR… FIND OUT ABOUT ANY/EVERY SIDE EFFECT BEFORE YOU START THESE MEDS FOR PERI/MENOPAUSE. You’ll be glad you did!

      • Esmom says:

(TheOG)@Jan90067, Yikes, I am so sorry you went through that. How incredibly scary. I know I should be grateful that I haven’t experienced side effects and I should have made a disclaimer along with my recommendation. I feel like my doctor is very good about outlining all the pros, cons and potential side effects of a medication before I take it but I know not everyone is so thorough. Due diligence is so important.

      • (TheOG)@Jan90067 says:

Esmom, it *was* pretty bad; I can laugh about it now, but when going through it (and facing losing my license for 6 mos. min/evaluated every 6 mos. for a min. of 2 yrs. to make sure I wasn’t going to “seize” behind the wheel)… all because I wasn’t informed, or even think to ask about ALL of the side effects! Drs. will tell you all the major ones, but who thinks to ask about the minute ones? NOW I read the little inserts that come with meds, or look up the Rx online and read up all about it! A lesson learned, for sure! ❤️

yeah I love this post lol. I joined Weight Watchers in January, thinking that the zero points food and rollovers etc would motivate me. I’ve gained 15 lbs. Part of that is because my exercise has decreased (I have foot problems so cant run like I used to) and I think a large part is diet (flaw in the WW plan is that I can eat a can of black beans and 3 eggs for bfast and its zero points….but clearly not zero calories, lol) – but it wasn’t until a post here a few months back that I thought part of it may be aging, approaching menopause (when IS that, anyway?) etc. I cant just eat healthy and reduce calories for a week and lose 5 lbs like I could 5 years ago. I don’t need to be as thin as I want pre kids, but I would like avoid buying all new clothes, lol.

So the running pants and the elliptical appeal to me. I have an apple watch that I love for the reasons Hecate mentioned for the fitbit, and seeing how little I walk/move some days is eye opening.

I have been using that exact Progesterone cream since June and can attest that it really works. My anxiety is remarkably better and I have more energy. If I get busy and forget to use it for a day I start to get anxious again.

    • Celebitchy says:

I have been using one pump but have been thinking of moving to 1.5. How much do you use and do you use it at night?

      • ChillyWilly says:

Hi CB, I use it twice a day. 1 full pump in the morning and one full pump before bed. I alternate application sites between my chest, lower belly and inner wrists per the manufacturer’s instructions. I guess your skin can become resistant to the cream of you use the same spot all the time.
I also want to comment about the studies saying HRT may cause breast cancer. I am aware of the risks but frankly, I am willing to risk it. My mental and physical health deteriorated severely during peri menopause. It was no way to live and nothing has helped like this cream. It has given me the energy and eased my anxiety so much that I have been exercising and eating healthy again. The anxiety was literally killing me so for me the risk is worth it.

Ladies: TALK TO YOUR DR. BEFORE TAKING ANY HORMONE CREAMS!

I just found this in a google search:

Progesterone inclusion during hormone therapy intervention leads to a persistent increase in breast cancer risk after intervention and leads to the development of hormone receptor–negative tumors in addition to those that are hormone receptor positive. Apr 16, 2015

Progesterone cream seems to have helped with my night sweats, but not my moodiness. Use Emerita Progest, which is a non synthetic, but also expensive. There is a book, https://amzn.to/2BliHHy that has some advice on vitamin regimens as well that I follow that is starting to help. But the weight gain was sudden, that’s for sure! And I also find that liquid omega 3 supplements are helping too. Perimenopause sucks, and the lack of medical research is annoying!

  5. Esmom says:

I’ve switched from mid rise workout pants to high waisted ones and I love them. These look like good choices, thanks!

  6. Ali says:

I resisted high waisted workout pants because I loathe high waisted jeans. But…turns out high waisted workout pants are so cozy and, I think, flattering in a way other high waisted pants are not.

    • Esmom says:

Same and same! I feel very tucked in and cozy in them and, for me at least, you can’t even see the high waist because I like to wear long-ish tops.

  7. Tess says:

I absolutely believe that natural progesterone cream can have a significant impact on our bodies. While waiting an eternity to get in with a fertility doctor, I had tracked my cycles for years and was pretty sure I knew why I wasn’t getting pregnant. I self medicated with progesterone cream and credit it with successfully lengthening my cycle by several days and then sustaining the pregnancy that led to my first son. I’m not quite menopausal yet but it’s coming. Thank you for the reminder about this product and I’ll definitively keep it in mind!

  8. Hecate says:

BTW, CB – I have those dog beds in heather grey! I like them because they are smaller so they don’t take up my whole living room, but my (med-sized) dogs fit fully in them easily. And they do seem to help with anxiety. I got them for when we have to, God forbid, leave the house to run an errand without them. Great suggestion!

  9. JLa says:

I have seriously been combing through different desk ellipticals on Amazon this entire week. The one Hecate recommend above is at the top of my list, but some of the reviewers say it starts to squeak so I’m on the fence. If anyone uses one, I would love to hear some details please!!

  10. Dani says:

PSA: Please be careful if you use hormone creams and have pets that sleep in bed with you – they like to lick them and it can cause very severe irreversible bone marrow suppression

    • Catherine Sheel says:

Actually they don’t need to lick them. Pets are so sensitive to the creams that they can absorb just by skin contact to either you or the sheets or clothes (if they sleep ON your clothes). I’m only familiar with the estrogen creams as I just diagnosed a 4 month old puppy with the biggest vulva I’ve ever seen! Owner uses estrogen cream (I should have asked her if it was OTC or RX and if any progesterone in the cream). Bone marrow suppression is possible with the estrogen creams but rare; the most common cause is hair loss and vulvar hypertrophy. Early estrogen exposure in these female dogs can then make them prone to mammary gland cancer later in life as well. PSA from a DVM who just researched this! ;-0

Tried shapewear once. Felt like my lower body was strapped into a straight jacket. We don’t need that crap. None of us.

I’m approaching 57 and am currently still bleeding like a stuck pig. I can’t wait to start menopause to end this now 45 year long monthly nightmare!
