Prince Andrew said the n-word to a man of Sri Lankan descent in 2012

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, opens the Francis Crick Institute in London

Prince Andrew is a liar, a rapist, a human trafficker, a boor, a moron, and a sweaty, useless, privileged dumbass. But did you know that he’s also a racist? Who would have thought, right? Prince Philip is one of the most racist old coots alive, and who would have thought that his large adult children would carry some of the same racism? For what it’s worth though – I don’t think Princess Anne has ever said or done anything racist? But the Duke of York has. I enjoy the pile-on, truly. Let’s get it all out. Prince Andrew said the n-word to a man of Sri Lankan descent in 2012. *deep sigh*

Prince Andrew was today accused of using the N-word at a Buckingham Palace meeting with a Downing Street adviser of Sri Lankan descent. Rohan Silva, who was David Cameron’s key aide on the tech economy, claims that the “offensive” incident took place in 2012 during a discussion about trade policy. Mr Silva said he asked the Queen’s second son whether the government department responsible for trade “could be doing a better job”. He said the Duke of York responded: “Well, If you’ll pardon the expression, that really is the n***** in the woodpile.”

Palace sources categorically denied that Andrew ever used the phrase, insisting he would never use such language. But Mr Silva, 38, now a co-working space entrepreneur and an Evening Standard columnist, said he clearly recalls “how I walked blinking into the sunshine outside Buckingham Palace, reeling at the prince’s use of language” after the meeting attended only by himself, Andrew and a palace aide.

He added: “For a long time afterwards I kicked myself for not confronting the prince on his choice of words — and it’s something I still regret today. After all, he clearly wasn’t taken to task very often by the people around him, which meant offensive language went unchallenged.”

At a Buckingham Palace meeting the previous year, Andrew and Mr Silva had been discussing European Union reform. Mr Silva claimed Andrew said: “What you have got to remember is that you’ll never get anywhere by playing the white man.” Mr Silva added: “I genuinely didn’t know what he meant, and the discussion moved on. But the phrase ‘playing the white man’ stuck in my head, as I’d never heard it before. So when I got back to my desk, I immediately googled it. The definition flashed up on my screen: an old-fashioned saying, used during colonial times, meaning that only white people can be trusted to follow the rules, unlike dark-skinned natives.”

[From The Evening Standard]

The worst/funniest part of the Evening Standard article is when ES tries to explain the background on the phrase and after explaining its racist American roots, ES says: “It was once widely used to refer to a hidden problem or threat, but is now regarded as wholly unacceptable.” Here’s what it means BUT DON’T EVER USE IT. Which is true. Don’t ever use it. It’s appalling that this uniquely awful, racist American expression is being used by members of British royalty, or any British person. As for Andrew’s use of the awful expression… Jesus, the man is an utter buffoon. A rapist AND a racist? This really can’t continue.

I gather white brits have been using this word to refer to south asian people for a long time.
But yeah, we should have expected this.

    • Aoife says:

I’ve never heard it used in the UK in this context, by white people or anyone else. Other words, yes, but not this one.

      • Ronaldinhio says:

My father uses ‘play the white man’ and woodpile chatter
He is Irish and an unutterably abusive racist bastard of a man
I grew up hearing these things. It was often used in the U K in the 70s, 80s, 90s

    • kerwood says:

Yes, this word wasn’t used exclusively for people of African descent by the British. People forget that ‘Little Black Sambo’ was originally a story about an Indian child.

And the phrase that PedoAndy used is also quite familiar to White people of a certain age on BOTH sides of the Atlantic. Technically, PedoAndy isn’t part of that generation, but one can imagine what he grew up hearing. And part of White privilege is to cling to the racist practices of your forefathers.

    • Megan says:

Just when I thought Andrew could not get any creepier, he goes and proves me wrong.

  2. Beach Dreams says:

Not surprising at all. And of course Andrew would be racist & snobbish enough to talk about nonsense like “playing the white man”.

  3. Fluffy Donuts says:

I can’t believe I had a crush on him back in the 80’s. Ugh.

  4. DaisySharp says:

This, from someone who has been “playing the man” his whole life. and not very well.

  5. Eliza says:

Of course he did. The whole family is racist. I’m surprised anyone is surprised.

    • Snappyfish says:

At a celebration in Hong Kong, Prince Phillip (Prince Andrew was with him) was speaking with the attaché from the UK & said to the newly stationed diplomat, “don’t stay here too long or you will become all slitty eyed”

      These people are awful

      • Jen says:

And people always try to exclude The Queen from the narrative, but I find it challenging at best to believe that she has a racist husband, racist children, racist grandchildren, and yet is somehow above it all.

      • paleana says:

Agreed, Jen. She’s made her share of questionable comments over the years, but she’s also done her best to cover up Phillip’s racist actions, Andy’s racist actions, Harry’s racist actions – among all the sexpest stuff. Pretty unlikely she doesn’t feel that way too.

      • Lara K says:

Oh, the queen is “above” everything in a very deliberate way. She does everything through her staff. A la Taylor Swift with her fans, per today’s article.

      • Kiki says:

I agree with the really awful people in the British Royal Family but racist is a by far from many. I thought Prince Charles was the snob just like his uncle Prince Edward (you know… the one that abdicated the throne to be with his wife who happens to be a W*****) fortunately I was wrong. However, the ghost of Prince Edward is back in Prince Andrew and really I don’t really know about his offspring but if they are just like him, I am deeply sorry for his girls. Prince Andrew is a buffoon and a conceited snob. His downfall will come, therefore leave Prince Harry and Meghan alone.

    • PrincessK says:

The RF live in a bubble. Andrew must have picked this language up from the people surrounding him, such as his family. People always pick on Philip but the Queen Mother was apparently openly racist. I am less offended when l learn about the over 90s making these types of comments because of the era in which they grew up. But times have changed and for Andrew to make comments like that in 2012 shows either incredible arrogance or deep stupidity or a combination of both.

  6. Lizzie says:

wait til you hear what his father said about jews! i mean – of course he is a racist POS…he comes from a long line of them.

  7. Ana Maria says:

    that last picture is gold🤣

  8. Cidy says:

Jesus Christ Lmao I literally just bust out laughing out loud at my desk at the heading of this. Wtf is wrong with this man!?

  9. Becks1 says:

I’m not surprised at this at all. And I expect we are going to start hearing a lot more stories like this about Andrew.

    • Oui oki says:

Seems like the daily mail is finally focussing on Andrew now. They should find a lot of nasty stuff in his history because he doesn’t seem to be very careful about his words or activities

      • Kiki says:

As they should… That’s the money pit. That’s where the Daily Mail should be focusing on Prince Andrew and his shenanigans instead of wasting their time insulting Duchess Meghan who has done nothing wrong.

  10. Eleonor says:

    How astonishing

  11. Charfromdarock says:

Too bad he’s already used up the brilliant fat fingers and no sweating defences.

  12. Deanne says:

Not the least bit shocking when it comes to this family.

  13. Godwina says:

Isn’t it awesome when bloated old fckng racists trot out expressions many of us have never even heard, as if to resurrect something ugly that *almost* died?

    /s

  14. Tiffany says:

So a family that is steep in colonialism is racist.

Shocked, I tell you, I am shocked.

  15. Catnip Cupid says:

    I shake my head….

  16. Catherine says:

    vile, disgusting man

  17. VS says:

This story is just a DISTRACTION from the Pedo Andrew story…………..please I hope this doesn’t distract the public from his actions in the Jeffrey Epstein ring of trafficking!

  18. Basi says:

After his disastrous interview ….if the queen wants to salvage any of her respect and legacy and secure a future for the royal family she better come out against him.

  19. otaku fairy.... says:

“For a long time afterwards I kicked myself for not confronting the prince on his choice of words — and it’s something I still regret today. After all, he clearly wasn’t taken to task very often by the people around him, which meant offensive language went unchallenged.” Yeah, everything he’s saying here rings true. Of course palace PR sources cover for Prince Andrew, proving the point. Ugh. 😒💧🌏

  20. noway says:

Keep piling on!!! He deserves it, and I feel like he won’t be punished criminally so he deserves something. It seems like the only people who get criminally punished are black. Not that they don’t deserve it, Bill Cosby, but how do we not have Weinstein yet . You know R. Kelly will be the next one criminally convicted, again well deserved, but where are the others. Kind of surprised this isn’t a bigger issue on here.

I do think it’s interesting when someone acknowledges the difference between racism in the US versus UK. Still making a solid social point when you are dealing with Prince Andrew seems wrong on many levels. There are more pressing issues to attend to with him.

    • Well-Wisher says:

Dislike Kelly and Cosby but fail to see the equivalent to Prince Andrew. His situation is unique for his status unlike the two.

      • dreamchild says:

Because the narrative has always been that black people are capable of doing heinous things but for White people there is always an explanation or a diluting of their crimes or behavior. Racism is so hard to explain to those who haven’t had a lifetime of experiencing it. Just ask Harry.

  21. Giddy says:

I didn’t think my opinion of him could sink lower. I was wrong.

  22. stepup says:

I mean, if you define racist as throwing on a white hood and going to a cross burning, then no, Anne and the rest of them are not racist. If you define it as using bad words in public, then no, again, Anne is probably not a racist. But if you define racist as a pronounced implicit bias problem, then OF COURSE Anne and the whole lot of them are racist!

  23. Lowrider says:

The BRF history is built on racism, classism etc.

Will and Harry attended colonial theme parties. Phil and Chuck proudly state their ignorance in public.

  24. What. . .now? says:

Literally no one is surprised about this–even across the pond!

I bet the Daily Fail has thousands of stories of Andrew. They might feel it okay to blow the dust off those files and start trickling out all his malfeasance week after week until he is driven out of polite society….NAH, who I’m kidding! Let’s keep kicking the bi-racial Duchess in the face instead!!

  25. Original Jenns says:

I don’t think the phrase is uniquely American, I’ve read that phrase and a couple of others in Agatha Christie novels. Definitely not surprised that Andrew uses those horrible phrases. I think that’s where the majority of the older royals are stuck – colonial times. It’s why I think the British Royal Family will die out and why other royal families seem to thrive – adapting to the future.

  26. Sunshine says:

We saw this one coming and expect a few more. I note it is the evening standard that ran this story first and not the right wing tabloids who I assume know about his behaviour but would rather attack the foreigner.
