Kristin Chenoweth was on Seth Meyers earlier and I’m only just seeing it now. She was in a sparkly rainbow tie dye hoodie dress, which was adorable. She looked super cute like she just rolled out of bed in that outfit but did her full makeup and hair. She told a story about what she goes through to sanitize her area of a commercial plane and it reminded me of Naomi Campbell’s sanitizing regime. I only wish we had video of it like we do for Naomi. It seems like Naomi’s is more efficient as she actually wipes down the seat and remote instead of just spraying things.
I have a routine when I go on a plane. When I get on the plane [I spray disinfectant on everything]. The last gig I had was… a Target center opening. Beck was playing. I put on my mask, I also have a neck brace. The guy next to me was like ‘wow you’re really papared.’ I’m like ‘yeah, I’m not going to be talking during the flight.’ [sprays more disinfectant]. We get to the rehearsal. I walk in the dressing room and here’s [Beck’s] drummer, the guy that I sprayed. Can you believe it?
I have no problem with people disinfecting stuff on a plane as long as it’s relatively scent-free. I would be annoyed if someone sprayed a scented product next to me, especially if they sprayed it ON me! I guess there is something worse than people wearing heavy perfume on a flight. The smells in there get trapped and some perfumes make me dizzy. I bet Kristin was being self-deprecating though and she doesn’t really spray it on other people.
Kristin also said that she goes into vocal rest around her performances and that she has a board she writes on so she doesn’t have to talk. I like that she owns her diva-ness and puts herself first. Kirstin has a new album out called For The Girls in which she covers songs by female artists. She got Dolly Parton to record I Will Always Love You with her and she also does collaborations with Jennifer Hudson, Reba McEntire and Ariana Grande. Kristin met Ariana when she was just 10 and her grandmother brought her backstage after a Wicked performance. Ariana sang for Kristin and Kristin was so impressed by her she gave her a wand from the show and told her not to give up on her dreams. I love that story! She also met Reba McEntire when Kristin was just 19.

I don’t blame her – I’m constantly amazed by other people’s poor hygiene habits in enclosed spaces.
I would LOVE to sit next to her on a plane. People are gross. They don’t wash their hands, they sneeze/cough with open mouths, and they just have no common decency. I really hope she didn’t actually spray the guy though, because that’s not right.
How convenient that she has the benefit of a mask to prevent inhalation of her disinfectant spray. I have asthma, and if she did that near me, I would have her ejected.
Whether one uses sprays or wipes, the virucidal/bacterocidal method is the same…dessication or duration of contactis what kills the bugs. Be thoughtful and mindful of others and use wipes. The outcome is the same, without health risks to others- not just her seat mate, but all round here, and in fact the entire cabin to a degree, because the air is recirculated throughout the cabin.
I would have her ejected too AFTER I tell her off… I have severe asthma and wipe down items, including seats and have purchased an extra seat or two to avoid being exposed during the flu season. I honestly think she said all that because she thought she would sound “cute”. Instead IF she actually sprays in front of people and let it linger, she’s contributing to other people’s lung damage…
I have wipes, the spray can be overwhelming.

Ugh, no kidding. Was in a store over the weekend that had samples of their holiday foods out. Even with tongs, ladles, etc. in/on the containers people still put their hands in jars to grab, including one lady who reached in with the hand that had been holding the underside of her dog. Grossed me out.
And while I find Kristin Chenoweth kind of exhausting, I am always amazed that she has such a beautiful singing voice as her speaking voice is so squeaky/nasally.
This is the reason I will NEVER buy bread/buns from grocery stores where you can bag your own. I have seen people stick their hands in there and feel the buns to find the “freshest/softest” ones. It’s so gross. It just amazes me how dirty people are. I mean your hands aren’t clean. You’ve touched a million things and now you’re touching all the buns that YOU and someone else is going to eat !!!
If someone sprayed me with a disinfectant, yeah, there would be some talking during the plane ride. I don’t find that cute or funny. It’s rude.
It is rude. And it is also assault.
And a health risk to those of us with asthma and other respiratory issues.

I doubt she actually sprayed the guy directly, sounds like exaggerated storytelling. I hope.
I am very allergic to most fragrances, so I get really mad when people spray scented stuff in public or wear heavy perfume. A non-stinky disinfectant? Go for it. But anything that has a smell, you’re going to hear me coughing and wheezing and blowing my nose and bitching about it for the whole flight.
I’ve seen Kristin in concert and in a Broadway show, her voice is amazing, and in her concert she brought young girls up from the audience to sing with her, it was really great.
Owning your divaness is not the same as being rude. She’s rude.
Right!? I’m shocked that people are praising this behavior. Like, sure, rest your voice before performances. That’s self-care and protecting your earning power. But spraying people with disinfectant on a plane is RUDE. Saying to someone who made a one-sentence statement to you “Yeah, I’m not going to be talking on this ride” is RUDE.
Wear a mask, sanitize yourself and your space. All of these are ways to protect yourself. Don’t spray someone with disinfectant. And there are nicer ways to say “I don’t feel like talking right now”.
I almost typed “I’m sorry” but you know what? I’m not. We are sharing this world we live in. We don’t have to talk to strangers on planes if we don’t want to, but politeness is basic common decency and you don’t get a free pass just because you’re too fabulous to bother. ugh. I had no opinion on her prior to this story but now I think she’s a gross rude diva who needs to think about the way she treats other humans much more.

Having said that I travel with scent free wipes. People are gross.
I was in a public bathroom stall a few weeks ago. I mean not to be gross but you can hear each other, she was doing number 1&2. She walked out of there without washing her hands! Straight from flushing the toilet to the door.
Yeah she’s rude.
I’m grossed out by even the idea of eating food that other people have touched. How do you all wash fruits and vegetables from a grocery store? You have no idea how many people have touched them so…
That’s something else that grosses me out. I see people “testing” the grapes at the store. Just popping them in their mouths with dirty hands and God knows who touched those grapes or if they fell on the floor and were picked back up !
If she’s exaggerating or embellishing for effect, that’s dumb, since the only thing it’s done has made me question her manners. Better to just tell the truth in a funny way than try to exaggerate for laughs.

I doubt she sprayed anyone. Likely just the residual spray from her own area. But definitely not a good idea to use a spray in an enclosed area.
I get a cold every time I fly. My doctor says it is like a flying in a Petri dish. I don’t blame her a bit.

True Story: She cut in line ahead of me going through security at LAX last month. She had one of the handlers just push people out of the way (rude). She apologized, but still the entitlement with some of these people is INSANE.
Also, she is TINY.

That’s why I believe she really sprays people. She’s not a nice person.
I always take wipes on the plane with me and wipe down my area and the seats next to me (since I usually get to my seat before the rest of my row). Some people will wipe down their area too, if you offer them wipes, because I always have extra. Also carry saline spray to keep my mucus membranes moist, point the AC nozzle a bit in front of me to keep the air flow pushing things away from me, and carry a mask in case someone next to me is sick. I’ve been sick way too many times after flying and now I take immunosuppressants, so I have to be more careful. Also, it’s a good idea to wipe down some often overlooked spots in a hotel room, like light swiches or the remote control.
I wish she would spray disinfectant on me. period.

As someone who is legit allergic to chemical scents (fragrance) and benzyl alcohol, there would be lots of talking in the aftermath of being sprayed. That is such a rude thing to do.
this story isn’t funny or cute. also -get a grip. overuse and antibacterial wipes, lotions and creams is part of the reason drug resistance in bacteria is on the rise. if you’re so paranoid about your health, drive in your own car, fly private or wear a mask. don’t assume the poors around you are filthy and don’t impose you’re phobias onto others. if someone sprayed me with anything on a plane, i’d file assault charges. no exaggeration.
Everything you said. This germaphobic thing is gonna get us all sick… We need the bacteria around us and to train our bodies to be resistant, and some protects us. Children who grow up around animals are statistically less allergic to animals for instance. What a strange society we live in.
How rude is that? If she’s such a germaphobe, she should pay for both seats so she’s alone. Then spray the empty seat next to her and put on her surgical masks and gloves. Problem solved.

You break out anything aerosol on the plane and I’m gonna have a problem with you. It’s a closed atmosphere, and when people come up on a plane and start spraying things (anything), we’re gonna have issues.
I have tremendous sympathy for germaphobes. I will happily tolerate your insulting behavior because it comes from a place of genuine anxiety–and I understand anxiety. You’re killing your immune system (and the immune systems of your children) by acting like this and not seeking therapy…but I have tremendous sympathy for it. The video of the supermodel (was it Naomi?) doing this made me feel like crying for her. For real. There is legit fear behind it, and I get it.
But use wipes. If you break out spray of any kind, I’ll have you thrown off the plane. The end. I shouldn’t have to struggle to breathe because you’re a fruitcake with an entitlement complex.
Edited to add: People who come from this level of wealth and entitlement need to pay the extra and fly private. She can afford to fly private, and it protects the general public from this kind of behavior. If the unwashed masses are so beneath you and perceived as such a threat…fly private.

Just a bit of basic consideration for others and the environment is all that’s needed, it doesn’t take much and would go a long way… Not spraying disinfectant, which contains formaldehyde, chlorine, bleach, on fellow passengers, not taking shoes and socks off, wearing enough deoderant to minimise BO, but not so much perfume (why is it usually bad perfume!) to induce asthma in other passengers is not too hard to do.
As for wipes – there’s surely some other option that doesn’t encapsulate what a throw away society we are in the west.
I bring anti-bac wipes and wipe down my space, which I think is reasonable, considering the cleaning on planes is actually way below basic standards. I love KC, but if she sprayed me with disinfectant because I was sitting next to her on a plane I would really have an issue. That is rude AF and she may find her tiny self laid flat out as a result. She can be a diva and own it all she wants but when she’s spritzing strangers like they’re lepers then she needs to check that at the door. That ain’t cute, no matter who you are.
