I still remember the moment when I realized the Duchess of Cambridge was a big fan of lace. It was very early in her marriage, in the first year, really, and she wore an okay dress with an intricate lace panel in the back. It dawned on me that Kate would spend years wearing fussy lace dresses and so far, I’ve been proven right. To be fair, her love of lace doilies isn’t as annoying as her button obsession, but for some reason, Kate really does want a closet full of white lace doilies and black lace doilies. Last night, it was a moment for a black lace doily.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were the “royal guests” of the annual Royal Variety Performance. Every year, someone has to show up – sometimes it’s the Queen, sometimes Prince Charles, last year it was the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They trade off years and the same royal rarely goes two years in a row. Kate wore this Alexander McQueen gown which reminded me – somewhat – of the black lace Alice Temperley she’s worn to a few black-tie events. The lace on this McQueen is a bigger “pattern” though, which keeps it from looking too fussy. That being said, the sleeves on this are not great? The shoulder puff, the way the sleeves are unlined… I don’t know. It feels off. Would it have looked better if the sleeves had been lined too? I can’t decide.
William looked boring as usual. There was some conversation about how maybe William shoved Prince Andrew under the bus somehow, but you know what? I’ll blame William for a lot of things, but not that. I think Andrew really is that stupid, and it had nothing to do with any of the other “courts” doing him dirty. That being said, I bet Kensington Palace and Clarence House find ways to distance themselves from Andrew and begin to grab some power.
PS… William touched Kate’s back briefly, which means the British tabloids will not mention Rose Hanbury the rest of the year.

Weirdly, I quite like the earrings, it’s the dress I’m ambivalent about.
In any case, she looks (to my untrained eye) as if she’s had some facial work done. Even more than she did a couple of weeks ago. I mean, look at the third picture of her, where she’s entering/exiting the car…….she’s had work done.
@Bella – William also appears to have work done on his face. He looks freshened up. I wonder if this is part of their preparation to appear on television for their upcoming individual projects on BBC??

I thought the earring choice odd–why wear those when she could borrow some really good stuff from the queen? These earrings seem like cheap imitations of the truly good stuff.
I don’t like those earrings either, they are Erdem and too busy. Some great diamond earrings would have looked smashing.
I like the dress too, except for the pattern that makes the big X across her crotch. Someone mentioned it and now I can’t unsee. But I think this could have been a pretty sexy dress if she had styled it differently. More vavavoom hair, more color in the lip. She unsexied it, which I think she does on purpose to be more conservative. Which is too bad because this could have been both.
I can’t see anything but her eyebrows. They are so jacked. I wish she would get w/Anastasia or a real professional and get them to look modern. It reminds me of her old-fashioned eyeliners back in the day, which she finally fixed, thank god.

The nude fabric doesn’t match her skin tone, which throws the dress, and the unlined sleeves, off. She also needed her hair up, and killer bling earrings to offset the empty neckline. Take away the (too high for the “waist”, but too low for empire) band, and it would be a sexy dress, especially with the back dip,

Agree, this dress looks cheap and very basic. It looks like a vintage Dress Barn ensemble from their 1985 holiday collection or a Jessica McClintock dress. I don’t understand why she spends thousands for duplicate dresses when she could spend hundreds by hiring a seamstress to make her clothes. Nothing she wears is modern and fashionable so there is no need to spend so much money on cheap looking clothes.
This may be the worst of her 5-6 black-lace-over-nude illusion dresses. She has lots of bad ones, but this might take the cake. Not sure why, could be too many 80s details? Bad lace design and placement. Too much nude not enough black. Waist band too high. Trim too wide. Sweetheart neckline coupled with low back – trying too hard for sexy. Poofy shoulders/sleeves like the bad nude-lace-over-black cosplay she wore for the Somme event.

I think the lining is far too light. That’s part of what makes it look cheap to me. If you’re going to have something made for you, get a lining that matches your skin tone. Otherwise it looks very off the rack, or like it was made for someone else. The lining color makes her look washed out and dull. Which is weird because when I just scrolled back up, her face and chest actually look kind of tan/slightly sunburned. So why is my lasting impression that she looked washed out?
In the picture of her getting out of the car, where you can’t see the whole bottom of the dress and the sleeves blend in more to the background, I think it looks better. The top (with no sleeves) might have been an interesting bodice if it could be paired with a different skirt to make a different dress. It would also be good to get rid of that super noticeable seam that points right down into her crotch when she’s walking.
I love the dress, I wish she had worn her hair like she did on the balcony during Remembrance Day with a great earring. But she looks lovely and seems like the had fun.

Surprisingly, I loved it – I’m not usually a fan of sheer over nude. I think the velvet accents added structure and the dip in the back is flirty. I do wish she’d pulled her hair back or worn a great necklace.

The old girl could use a big-hawking necklace with the neckline of the dress. It is not has if she had to go out and hire a necklace for the night. I am sure QEII or any major jeweler in London would give her a loaner.

All these lace-over-nude-lining dresses echo back to that sheer skirt she originally used to catch William’s attention in the student fashion show. She always looks so pretty with an updo- why does she keep insisting on the sausage curls? An updo would have showcased the great earrings and the flattering neckline of the dress.
Something about the way William pats her back looks “off,” as if he’s posing for a picture with a stranger and doesn’t want to be accused of anything improper later.

To me Kate is a total mistery. How can someone so tall, skinny, with beautiful hair, symetric face and so conventionally beautiful be so Meh?!?

I think it’s the lack of personality. It’s like looking at an American Girl toy – sure it looks adorable and prettily dressed, but it won’t say anything to you or make you laugh or give you any indication it cares about anything.
This is why I don’t like her wearing McQueen – McQueen was all about passion, personality etc… If Lee were still alive there is NO WAY in all seven hells Katie Keen would be allowed to wear anything from the label. Sarah Burton has ruined the vision Lee had for the label – there were other better people who could have taken over (the Italian guy who’s name escapes me – his own label stuff is good).
Lee, like Tom Ford, was famously picky about which celebs wore his designs – this is the guy that BANNED Victoria Beckham from his stores and made it known that she was never to be allowed to buy his clothes.

Lee McQueen was an artist, Sarah Burton is not. His show were much more than the presentation of clothes, they were unique pieces of theater.
I recently saw this great documentary about him and his work – and I honestly think that it would be difficult for anyone to continue the brand according to his vision because he worked in ways that ways that were unpredictable and surprising (sometimes even to himself). Sadly, the way he worked (and overworked himself) wasn’t healthy and I think it ultimately played a part in his mental decline. From some comments he made in the documentary I also suspect that he didn’t even want his brand to continue without him.
Bottom line, Lee was a unique artist and I don’t think anyone can replicate this. If it was someone who was equally as unique and artistic as Lee was, then it would be their vision not his. There’s also the issue of whether a brand should remain hidebound to the tradition of the brand – or whether it should evolve while paying homage to the tradition.
However, I do agree that Lee would never have let Kate wear his clothes. She’s the epitome of bland and Lee was the opposite (as were his muses). Plus, I think he really despised the BRF (and the general idea of royalty). I don’t think he would have let anyone from the BRF wear his clothes, to be honest.
@Digital Unicorn, you are so right about the REAL Alexander McQueen. When I saw Kate’s wedding dress and heard it was McQueen, I knew that somewhere in fashion heaven, Lee was RAGING. This dress would have him in fits. It’s not just the lack of personality of the dress; it’s the lack of personality of the person wearing it.
On the other hand, I think Lee would have LOVED dressing the Duchess of Sussex, if only to throw two fingers up to the British establishment.
Going off of Digital Unicorn, this is why labels should just die out when the original designer dies. I love McQueen’s stuff from the 90s but the stuff now is nowhere near his original vision. Burton could have created her own label.
ArtHistorian, I’ve seen that documentary on Lee McQueen too, and the same takeaway as you do. Had he lived, there is no way he’d design for Kate. Talk about polar opposites!! I’m sure he was rolling in his grave at her wearing a wedding dress with his label on it. And all the peplums since!
Vava, that documentary is so good. You really get a feel for how the shows were more than just presenting clothes but rather theatrical set-pieces.
However, it also made me sad because he was in such a bad place at the end of his life. He was overworked (he put out 14 collections a year), took coke, got paranoid and pushed people away and apparently he also had episodes where he heard voices. It is so clear in hindsight that he needed help.
He was an amazing artist.
ArtHistorian, the documentary made me sad too. He was a genius and his shows truly were spectacular. I’m glad they put it all together in that film. The artistry. The troubled soul. Seems as if his mother’s death sent him over the cliff, but he was probably not planning on living a long life.
In addition she is so is very contrived. Strict diet and I suspect purging and smoking as well. Professional hairstylist (hair pre royal hair was very ordinary), lots of fillers, botox and heaven knows what else to maintain her face. Just like every garden variety celebrity except she’s a princess and we expect more. Don’t and you won’t be disappointed.
Kate’s face is asymmetrical, that was pointed out years ago. One half looks like Pippa, the other like Carole. When she gets too much botox it is more pronounced, because her left eyebrow is already higher than her right.

Hair looks like a wig from 2007 and I hate it so much.
She has too many bundles of hair in her head. Kate needs to lighten up on the weave. It’s really becoming noticeable.
You can also see in the back that some of the hair pieces don’t match the new colour she’s now dyed her hair.
I like this dress. The back is great. There’s less lace then she normally wears which is maybe why I like it. I’m not nuts about her hair. I wish, if she was going to do bombshell type waves, that she’d made her part deeper so that it looked different from how she normally styles it.
The lace pattern across her chest is not good at all though. Talk about headlights!
There is also an X going on in the groin area that isn’t great either. That’s the problem with these dresses with the fake nude overlay. The lace patterns need to be considered as to where exactly they sit on the wearer or else they look weird.
The placement of lace and beading patterns on so many gowns look like trolling from the designer. Even Letizia has fallen prey to this a few times.

i like the dress. the neck and waitlines are very flattering. she usually looks like an inverted triangle when she’s in formal wear and this really gives her nice proportions. i do wish the sleeves were lined. she needs to figure out how to curl her hair…i mean..come on
also – will’s hair is so tragic. not that he’s balding – bald men can get it. but – he’s keeping that frizz on top and the sides shellacked down and it is just so elderly. he’s so unattractive.
I feel like the lace pattern highlights her breasts in a weird way and there is like a heart or something off-center, making it look like her nipple is in a weird spot on the outer sides of her breasts. I can’t unsee this now. I hope this isn’t considered offensive!

they look great, I love her loyalty McQueen. The tailoring is impeccable, the velvet is gorgeous, adds depth. Hair down keeps it youthful, fun. No one does lace like McQueen. Her figure is to die for, and the video clips were cute, fun. Wins all the way around.
Really you like the hair down? I mean she looks pretty but she has the most amazing up dos and I think it would have shown off the dress especially the neckline which is very flattering. She looks beautiful but I think a ruby or emerald amazing earring with her hair up would just have killed it. (That being said I don’t know the level of formal this event is)

I find the look dated. I had that same dress in 2006. Not the same length but the same black lace under nude look that was popular for a minute.
It’s either back again or still popular. I was looking at formal dresses for my daughter and this style was there a lot. I think on Kate it doesn’t look bad, but on some it looks almost like their skin tone but off and it looks weird. My daughter’s friend who is African American tried one on and it looked the best on her.

She really doesn’t photograph well when she’s not smiling. The combination of botox/sagging jowls is not a good look.
She did. She could just have repeated it, it is quite a long time since she wore it. She has so many bespoke items that look so similar that it is hard to distinguish between them, and yet she rarely repeats. I wonder why – is it because her wardrobe is so enormous that she’s lost track of what she has and just orders new stuff in the styles that she likes, having forgotten that she already have a couple of pieces that look almost exactly the same? She must spend astronomical sums on bespoke clothes that she rarely wears more than once or twice and I find it rather wasteful.
She has done this for years with day dresses and coat dresses too. She has two blue tweed skirt suits, from the same designer, that are almost identical. Extremely similar looks in the same shades, as if she never looks in her closet to realize she already has an outfit just like that.
@nota, I think she has two cream skirt suits from Alexander McQueen that are almost identical too in that one suit has buttons on the sleeves and one suit does not have buttons on the sleeves.
She also has a blue tweed coat dress, nearly the same as the two suits.
This led me down the rabbit hole of her dozens of similar cream suits, cream dresses, and cream coatdresses. In reference to point 14 above – Found a Catherine Walker with a bad, bad taupe lace/embroidery design with a heart over the crotch. Worn in Belgium in 2017.
Blah. I feel like I’ve seen this dress on her a million times. I wish that when she bought new gowns she invested in unique pieces.
I would re-line the dress in black, remove the sleeves, style her hair up in a sleek, modern knot, pop of color on the lip or cheek, switch to a metallic clutch, and add some diamond and emerald giant-drop earrings and a diamond cuff bracelet. I long for a red lip and manicure but what can you do?

I’m not a fan of her Alexander McQueen/Sarah Burton dresses in general. There’s always something off about them. I don’t like black lace over nude/beige fabric – it looks cheap or slightly tacky, I don’t know. This dress goes to my list of least favourite McQueen dresses she’s worn, and she seems to hunch over a bit which makes her look odd. I can’t put my finger on it but it looks off.
I like elements, like the velvet touches, and I love sleeves on a formal dress. The shape is great on her but everything she wears is so dated, matronly, or just un-stylish. Don’t come for me stans but I think this dress is a combination of all three! And the hair is so dated. *Ducks* 🙂

This is something that really annoys me because why not repeat what she already has in her enormous wardrobe. I find her incredibly spendthrift, especially since she’s no longer building a royal wardrobe.
Such gorgeous hair…such an outdated style. Chignons look so gorgeous on her, yet she’s so attached to the old Chrissy-doll style.
And in that second-to-last photo, it looks like her head is photoshopped onto her body. It makes my neck hurt to see that posture.

I love the dress! It’s gorgeous. I don’t like the woman wearing it, but she’s wearing it well.
I actually like this gown, but I am a fan of the black lace overlay with a nude slip or lining. It looks more sophisticated than some of the other ruffled/lace costumes Kate has worn before.
I am not usually against Kate’s fashion choices, even if they are boring, but this looks like a mother of the bride dress you can buy at the discount bin of department stores. Certainly not the look of expensive couture. To be fair, I blame the designers on these fails as well. You would think these brands would show more originality and quality when dressing the duchesses.
Maybe the velvet makes the dress read flat (therefore boring) in photos. If the black velvet trim was sparkly and Kate wore her hair up/away to show off the earrings, it would help punch up this kind of bland look.

Bespoke day dresses from McQueen cost 6,000-8,000. An evening gown like this would be much more.
I like the dress (something I would wear). Not loving the hair down, but overall I think she looks pretty. Not like: Wao pretty, but pretty.
Regardless, I cannot stop looking at her back, she looks soooo skinny, that if you zoom enough the picture you can see her bones. She always has been this skinny, but a little weight on her won’t hurt.
Also, the picture where she has her eyes wide open is not flattering at all, but I am sure it is because Kate is just not as photogenic as Meghan. I mean, she is a beautiful woman, but for some reason, Meghan has that “wao” factor that no matter the photo angle she looks gorgeous. My sister is like that, I am like Kate.
Yes, I wish I was photogenic like Meghan! My face is not symmetrical at all and I take the worst pictures. And so I’m self conscious about it which makes it even worse. My husband has managed to get a few good pictures cause I’m comfortable with him. I’m so jealous of people that take good pictures
For someone so beautiful she really just brings it down a notch. Like she’s trying not to be too modern. The lace pattern over her boobs don’t seem well placed. Like targets. Her hair doesn’t look modern or sleek – she looks fabulous when her hair is up. Makeup is so severe and it ages her. Sigh.

I don’t think that dress was suppose to have sleeves, that is why it looks off.

I think both Kate and Meghan are pretty women. But with Kate, her style always looks so old fashioned to me. From the makeup to the curls. Otoh, Meghan has a more modern style but sometimes it’s almost too severe in its clean lines. They’re at opposite ends style wise. Do most UK women style themselves like Kate? I ask that because I live in the US and idk anyone her age who does those type of curls. No one really curls the ends of their hair anymore, here in the US anyway.
I’m not a fan. I honestly don’t understand why she’s got those shoulders on a dress like this. She looks like a bad knock off of Morticia Addams cosplay for suburban football yummy mummys who missed the entire point of the show.
That velvet band around her waist –ugh—cheapens the look. Leave it to Kate to look twee (sausage curls) and matronly (too much lace) at the same time. Stylist badly needed!

Honestly, she’s the only person I’ve ever seen make McQueen designs look boring.
@JOANNA kate has a stylist!!Her longtime assistant/stylist went for maternity leave so she recruited some magazine editor to dress her! The new one got her to copy Meghan ‘s modern professional style of wearing pants and ditching the vintage clothes. Her choices have been so drastically different that people like myself found it odd at times to see her wear modern styles when she’s worn vintage dresses and coat dresses for so long!
