Katie Holmes’ shopping binges make Nicole Kidman look like a coupon-clipper

What in the world is happening with Katie Holmes? She and Tom have kind of fallen off the gossip radar - granted, there have been a few stories about them here and there, like about how Katie wants to wait to have another baby until she has “another” hit film, or how she doesn’t even want Tom around while she’s working. In a gossip age where Angelina’s absence from one red carpet creates weeks of drama for the tabloids, I kind of expected Tom and Katie’s temporary locale-split to create more drama. According to Lainey, Tom and Katie haven’t been photographed together for a month, and she asks who Tom has been doing for the past month.

In the scope of their now-seeming temporary separation, this story from the Enquirer seems like a throw-back to simpler times in the TomKat relationship. At issue? Katie Holmes goes shopping. A lot. Like, she blows hundreds of thousands of dollars a week. One of the Enquirer’s sources even does a side-by-side comparison between Tom’s current wife, and his last ex-wife, saying that though Nicole spent a lot of Tom’s money, she was nothing comared to Katie. We already knew this - Katie spent $14 million in six months while she and Tom were staying in New York earlier this year. But here’s more proof:

[After Katie] is done on the Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark set in Melbourne, Australia, Katie heads for the stores with 3-year-old daughter Suri in tow.

“She loves to shop,” a source told the Enquirer. “In Melbourne, she goes everywhere from the high end shops on Chapel Street to the low-end stores like Target. That woman can give a credit card a workout!”

In the last year, Katie’s shop-until-you drop-forays: blowing through $200,000 at Barney’s in one year; spending $14 million in New York; spending $43,000 in spa treatments this spring.

Tom appears undisturbed by his wife’s frenzied spending. The actor is said to be worth $250 million.

A friend told the Enquirer: “His ex-wife Nicole Kidman was a spendthrift, but compared to Katie, she’s a coupon clipper.”

Tom is just happy that Katie is happy. “It’s a situation where he does his thing, she does hers - and hers is shopping,” said the friend.

“She thinks nothing of heading off to Paris and buying designers’ latest creations. Price tags mean absolutely nothing to her.”

Katie’s publicist denies the big shopping trips, and one source says it’s “totally out of character for her” and that it shows how much she’s changed since becoming Tom’s gal. “She’s the youngest of five children, and with three older sisters, Katie wore a lot of hand-me downs. It’s like she’s making up for lost time.”

[From National Enquirer, print edition, August 17 2009]

Honestly, I think Tom Cruise is worth way more than $250 million. I’ve heard older estimates (back when he was hot stuff, and getting a percentage of the gross of his huge, hit films) of Tom’s fortune hitting the $400-500 million range. But does a bigger number make any difference? Is Katie taking out her issues by shopping and hording?

  1. Well someone can be worth 250 million today, but if you blow 14 million every six months coupled with maintaining homes, and paying regular bills, taxes, blah, blah, blah, that 250 can disappear really quick. You cannot spend that type of money forever and it not affect the pocketbook, even if you are Tom Cruise.

  4. Wow- you’d think she’d dress better with all the money she’s blowing through. She always looks like a bag lady.

  5. Doesn’t matter how much she has to spend…she still can’t dress and has absolutely no sense of style. She needs to invest a little in a stylist!

  6. Plus, if you are miserable, no amount of money can take that feeling away.

  7. Must be nice. Wonder what their prenup looks like. Hope there’s some charitable cash-dropping going on behind the scenes too.

    That Suri is just adorable!

  8. Yea, but alot of what she spends it on is shopping trips for Suri.

  9. @Obvious- I am sure that is true, but it is still ridiculous spending.

  10. If you have the money and can afford to spend it-then go for it. One of the joys of money is being able to spend it and as his wife, it is as much her money as his. I think it is envy on our part that creates any resentment, especially during these harder than usual times. If I had money like they do, I would be spending it too whatever the state of my marriage. Just because I could and it was Fun.

  11. With all Tom’s money at her disposal, she donated just her SYTYCD performance fee to her own charity? And how much was her performance fee?

  12. Really?? Do we get to have an opinion on them spending their own money now?? Leni is right, if I had it I’d be shopping like that too. And it’s nobody’s business how I spend what I earn.

  13. Well I guess it is made our business when it is published and talked about.

I don’t envy them. They may have way more money than I ever will have, but I am not running around, miserable, living a lie either.

I also didn’t say that they couldn’t spend it how they chose to, I said that the spending is ridiculous.

  14. I don’t understand how they can accurately report how much money she is spending. Aren’t their finances private? Do stores immediately call the tabloids after a celebrity has shopped and report the total? That seems like a good way to guarantee that the celeb won’t be back. I think this is spurious information.

  16. I agree about Tom being worth more than $250 mil. If I were a betting person, I’d say he’s worth double that. Otherwise I cannot see how he’d let her blow through that much in a year. Look how cheap he was with Nicole when he filed for divorce before their 10th anniversary.

Katie’s getting her share while she can.

  17. If that’s true, that is compulsive shopping, not normal at all. And I understand that it’s a disorder, but…shouldn’t a compulsive shopper dress better?

What business is it of ours? If they have the money then it’s up to them. Besides which, unless I see a financial statement directly from their accountants, which I won’t cause it’s none of my business! I choose not to believe the “facts” as they appear.

  20. Your question, “Is Katie taking out her issues by shopping and hording?” is actually beside the point. The money is what she gets for bartering away her freedom, religion, normalcy, etc. As another blogger here memorably put it, “She sold her soul for unlimited designer clothes.”

  21. It’s about the only thing that I like about Tom Cruise, his generosity with his women. I think he should be praised for it.

  22. Wasn’t there a lot of talk about that being a closed set? Who’s taking all those mommy and me photos? Also, she doesn’t look like a depressed robot. Even Suri is beginning to lose that vacant expression in her eyes. Wonder if the Tomkat brand has ended?

  23. Regardless of the 15 billion complaints I could lodge regarding Tom Cruise (one being that people actually care that he exists), my latest annoyance is the fact that neither of these parents with their infinite wealth and nannies can manage to pay someone to brush that child’s hair.

I mean, one wouldn’t expect one of them to do it themselves, right? Makes one wonder if Tom’ll be a Billy Ray Cyrus kind of dad (meaning: not one). He always looks so stylish and put together. Does it not bother him that his daughter always looks like she’s never groomed? Or maybe he just doesn’t notice? Maybe he’s too blinded by boyfriend Dave’s beauty to be bothered by the beard and the cover?

He hasn’t seemed to notice that despite a mansion full of designer clothes his wife dresses like she hasn’t taken her Lithium for a month.

Sad that they have a child. They’re both so beyond annoying. Suri’s bound to be a victim of their madness at some point. Poor kid. At least her money will pay for good therapy. Or wait, Dad’s insane religion doesn’t allow for that (unless she gives up her inheritance, I’d guess).

Ok then, I’ll revise — poor little filthy rich kid.

  24. “As long as she’s happy” ?

Sounds like massive issues to me. Spending that amount of money there is absolutely no way that she wears or uses all of the stuff she buys. I’ll bet most of it just ends up stored, never touched or looked at after the moment she bought it in the shop.

Sounds to me like she’s buying all that stuff to fill a hole in her soul, and guess what? All the possessions in the world aren’t going to fix the insanity that is Scientology and what it does to a person.
