Lupita Nyong’o in Michael Kors at the Critics’ Choice Awards: warrior princess?

Lupita Nyong'o at arrivals for The 25th...

The Oscar nominations come out today and I’m already sort of sad. I know that there will be conversations about #OscarsSoWhite and why Oscar voters seem to only reward films about dudes. It’s not that I think Lupita Nyong’o should have been a shoo-in for a million awards for Us – the movie was good, her performance was good, but I get that it didn’t scream “give me awards!” But it still pisses me off that she’s been largely ignored from most conversations. Lupita makes the most of it when she is invited though – she wore this custom Michael Kors dress to the Critics’ Choice and I love it. I love the dress, love the styling and she looks like a warrior princess.

Jennifer Lopez is also making me so f–king sad this awards season. I’m not super-engaged with any film this year, there’s no “I will scream if this movie doesn’t get nominated” for me, but I really thought J.Lo had a really good shot at Best Supporting Actress for Hustlers. She keeps losing to My Nemesis Laura Dern and IT SUCKS. It’s f–king depressing. I feel like J.Lo is kind of depressed about it too, and that’s why she went for this somewhat muted Georges Hobeika. Blah.

Also: bonus J.Lo at the LA Film Critics Association Awards. She wore Elie Saab to that awards ceremony and it was a much better look. I kind of think she should have worn this to the Critics’ Choice.

I loved, loved Jojo Rabbit. It was such a good little movie. And I loved Pain & Glory by Almodovar; Banderas is incredible. I wish that role would get recognition. If you haven’t seen it – I recommend it.

Me too! Taika is a genius! He nailed the feeling of “so absurd and tragic there is not much left but to laugh”. And he is either a shape shifter or a kid hiding in an adult man’s body, he captured that “kid in a grown ups world” perspective to perfection.

  2. Kate says:

Lupita looks so bland. She’s such a beautiful girl, that frock was a bad choice as was J-lo’s lime number. I do like the elie saab one tho.

  3. Char says:

Lupita looks SO GOOD! It’s not her most striking choice, but even in something “unispired” she looks incredible. And her hair choices are always amazing, her styling is flawless.
J.Lo. styling is making me sad. I hope she has something incredible for the Oscars because that Golden Globes dress and full styling will haunt me for years to come.

    • SarSte says:

Agree that it may not be the most striking, but Lupita is still killing it. Is there any thing or any colour that she can’t wear? Any time I see her in something, I think “oh, now THAT’S her colour” but today I realised I say that every single time I see a picture of her. I feel like few people can do what she does.

I like the idea of Lupita’s dress but not the execution.
The bodice looks a little… shrunk?

  5. Esma K. says:

Wow J Lo’s makeup has been bad lately. She is absolutely beautiful and does not need such heavy handed, harsh contouring! And the sickly lime green dress is doing her no favors unfortunately.

  6. Macheath says:

I’m not feeling the colour of that dress on Lupita. It pulls too much from her beautiful skin. Would prefer if it was black or a deep burgundy/oxblood colour.

  7. Willa says:

J Lo’s muted dress looks like Kim K’s wedding dress to Kanye. The bib front and belt in back.

  8. AnnaKist says:

Meh. They look dull, like this morning’s porridge. A smile might have helped.

I saw Hustlers and loved it. I haven’t seen a marriage story, so I could be way off base here, but Jennifer’s acting, while the best in the movie, was kind of the same as a lot of the characters she always plays. Slightly different, but I still saw Jennifer Lopez performing a role. I didn’t necessarily always see Ramona. She could have gone a wee bit further with the role I think. Which sucks because it really was a great movie, just maybe not great enough?

    • SKF says:

Dern was really good in Marriage Story. Sometimes they go for consistently good actors turning in a great performance over consistently average actors turning in their best performance. And then they flip it and do it the other way (which is why Glenn Close, Amy Adams and Annette Bening still don’t have Oscars). They’re extremely inconsistent.

    • Cindy says:

I’m not getting all the hype around Jennifer’s performance either. She was good, but I definitely didn’t walk out of Hustlers thinking “WOAH JLO COULD WIN AN OSCAR!!” like so many other people did.

The only other “Award” movies I’ve watched this year were Parasite and Knives Out. I’d say everyone from Parasite did a better job than her, and I liked Ana de Armas better too.

    • Miumiiiu says:

BUsyann, yes! Hustlers is a good movie but she’s always just jlo to me, even if she’s good at it. I liked Constance in the movie though

Lupita is always beautiful, but that’s not my favorite dress on her. I think Us was good, but she was great in it, and would be well deserving of nominations.

  11. Earthbound says:

Even in a kinda bad dress like this , (leather bodice with silky skirt, wth….) Lupita still pulls it off? Too. Beautiful.

  12. Cindy says:

She looks great from the neck up and waist down but that leather bodice makes absolutely no sense to me. It makes the dress look like a costume.

  13. Mimi says:

They both look stunning! Love the color on Lupita, her hair, those amazing arms. Regal is right.

Does anyone have fashion tips how to get larger boobs to look good in low V neck dresses? I get so envious when I see celebrities rocking glamorous looks like J.Lo’s Elie Saab and want to play dress up too. However, I have a bigger chest and zero fashion tape game.

    Any insight? Much appreciated lol

  14. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

She looks like she’s her own trophy. Love it.

  15. Bella says:

I love Jlo’s first dress a lot, but I don’t love the second one. The makeup in the second dress is so heavy you can see it from outer space.
I don’t love Lupita’s dress especially the bodice and I don’ think the color of the dress is that great either.

  16. Meg says:

I honestly cant think of an event where lupita didnt look great. Her stylist deserves a raise she just knows how to dress her
