Laura Dern won at the SAGs, she’ll get the Oscar that should go to Jennifer Lopez

I have not seen Marriage Story yet. I know it’s on Netflix, which of course I have (I’m watching The Circle because I’m trashy like that). Laura Dern has swept the supporting actress category this season and she’s a shoe-in for the Oscar that should have rightfully gone to Jennifer Lopez, who wasn’t even nominated! (To hear Kaiser righteously rant about that, check out this week’s podcast around minute 25.) I have a very low tolerance for watching relationship toxicity on screen and I trust Hecate, who told me that Marriage Story was hard to take. Once I’m better rested and am in a good mood I will watch it though, just to see if Laura Dern and Scarlett Johansson’s performances are Oscar caliber. I suspect Johansson’s is not, but that’s my own bias.

Laura predictably won supporting actress last night, and as she came up she stopped to hug her dad, Bruce, who was there to support Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. That was sweet! She was in Stella McCartney, which is surprising. Stella’s designs can be ill-fitting and weird, but this green cutout gown was somewhat striking. It had a subtle empire waist chain that wrapped around to an open back. The sleeves had a subtle fold on the sides which was unique. I liked it, I would wear this, but I also like dated 80s designs.

Rachel Brosnahan was also in Stella McCartney and I would wear this gown too. There’s a clear formula to these dresses, they’re both sold color formfitting gowns with embellishments, and it works. During her red carpet interview Rachel told a story about getting injured by the corsets she wears on Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She said that the corsets are to lengthen her torso to fit into the style of the era, not to make her thinner. Either way she suffered for it and said her ribs fused and she’s in physical therapy for that.

I’m including Dakota Fanning here because she had on a cut out gown with a bikini top similar to Dern’s look. The seafoam green of this Valentino blends in with her coloring. I would like this better in a darker color. She’s lovely though and I like the subtle cluster design of the sequins.

All 3 dresses are really nice.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

Dern’s dress is great. The blue looks like prom with a theme of stripper mom.
The other dress is fine but the colour with her hair is somehow a mismatch – she needs a different toner on her hair for all reasons but mostly to fit the pink in her skin

  2. Lady Baden-Baden says:

    ABSOLUTELY LOVE Laura Dern’s dress

  3. Jillybean says:

Yup… the Oscar, GG and SAG should go to JLo. She was robbed this award season. Booooo to Hollywood

    • Bronte says:

disagree. JLo cant act. Not that that stops anything – Brad Pitt will win the Oscar after all and he can’t act either.

    • SKF says:

Im sorry, but I think J-Lo is a terrible actress and I disagree with giving out Oscars for being surprisingly decent in a role as opposed to your usual bad to mediocre. This would be her first decent role since Out Of Sight. That is a very long gap. Dern is consistently great in everything and can elevate mediocre material. She has a natural face too – which I love. She did fantastic acting in two completely different roles this year – which shows her range.

I would have gone with the actresses from The Farewell in both categories this year; but since they were shut out, I’m happy with Dern.

I haven’t seen Judy – despite Garland being my fave – because it looks ridiculous and Judy Davis in Me and My Shadows already did it better. I’m confused at how Renee is sweeping the awards shows.

Scarlett was surprisingly good in Marriage Story and she elevated her role – which was needed, because the script definitely favoured Driver (unsurprising, co side wing the viewpoint of the writer). I had forgotten how good she can be. I think she also showed her range this year with MS and JoJo – although she should only have been nominated for one.

      • Normades says:

Agree with all your comments SKF.

Not a ScarJo fan but she really was excellent in Marriage story. Personally I thought she had the harder role because it is told more through Driver’s POV and is the more “sympathetic” character (because he’s Noah lol, way to change the story there guy).

But Scar really gave her character depth and elevated the role.

Still pissed at the Awkwafina snub 😤

      • Kosmos says:

AGREE JLo is not the best actress, never was. Not even a good singer, sorry. Not a JLo fan. She should stick to just dancing.

  4. Chrissyms says:

Laura fern looks amazing. All these ladies look good . Laura is so consistent: little women and marriage story were 2 of my faves this year. She was wonderful in both. I am still looking forward to seeing Hustlers though ,

  5. Wisca says:

If the Academy wasn’t so bigoted, JLo & Marc Anthony would have won for their performances for El Cantante & JLo would have been nominated for Hustlers. Because they are Puerto Rican, voters treated the masterful performances in El Cantante as if they were “just being themselves.” Some on another thread said the same about JLo in Hustlers, as if she, in the real world, is a hardened human being. This whole thing is especially infuriating when compared to Gosling & Stone’s adoration for La La Land & the “mistake” of calling out that film for best picture. Racism is seemingly intractable.

  6. ChillyWilly says:

Scarlett and Laura were just ok I’m Marriage Story. Adam driver was the standout for me.
I love Dakota’s dress. She looks gorgeous head to toe.

    • ChillyWilly says:

Forgot to say that if anyone deserved a supporting role nom for Marriage Story it’s Julie Haggarty and Alan Alda. They were delightful.

  7. Lucy2 says:

I would love Dakota’s if it didn’t have the cut out, I even like the color on her. Laura and Rachel’s are ok.

  8. SM says:

I know no one is rooting for ScarJo but despite being a terrible person, I think she deserves to win in the supporting category this year for Jojo Rabbit. I haven’t seen the Marriage Story but from the clips I did see Dern is recycling her Renata persona from Big Little Lies. Whether in Jojo Rabbit the role of the mother Scarlett plays is paramount, because her character is the only morally sane adult in that film and yet a role is the definition of supportive because her character is supposed to revile and help understand the main character and the change in the main character who needless to say is a child. If the portrail of mother would fail or was as emotionally excessive as Dern like to make her characters, the story would not have worked.

  9. Scal says:

I’m biased but Adam Driver is the beat part of marriage story. He carries that film-and he’s losing to Joaquin left and right which boggles the mind.

I’d agree that it’s a tough movie to watch. The fight scene at the apartment literally made my stomach churn-I’ve seen couples like that and ugh.

    • Lightpurple says:

Joaquin Phoenix’s comments to him were really touching

    • MellyMel says:

Adam is def the best part in the whole film. I’m too confused why he hasn’t won anything. And I also don’t understand the praise for Laura’s performance.

  10. broodytrudy says:

So many celebs in green this year and I am LIVING for it!

  11. lobstah says:

Dakota’s makeup is LOVELY. That peach really pops.

Does the lady from Mrs. Maisel have a chin implant?

  12. Marianne Hord says:

I loved Dakota’s look. Like a pretty mermaid.

  13. BellaBella says:

I always thought Rachel’s torso looked strangely elongated in Mrs. Maisel, and now I know why! Why did they do that to her? The clothes are awesome and I imagine she would have looked good enough with her body sans corset.

I can’t even engage in the Laura Dern debate anymore. It feels abusive at this point.

  14. Dabadass says:

I don’t know about winning the award, Laura Dern is is a seasoned , excellent character actress. I don’t see Lopez even getting near that talent wise. She should get recognized though. She should’ve been nominated at the academy. Lopez has never been that great at acting. She’s pretty awesome at everything else though.

  15. minx says:

Love ya Kaiser, but Dern wins against JLo, hands down.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I agree, Dern deserves her recognition. Additionally, she’s been constantly great for decades now.

  16. Kaye says:

Laura Dern is amazing & has the normal face for someone her afe. Not pulled and filled.

  17. Lena says:

I like all these looks, and I would definitely wear Rachel’s. According to people who would know, Laura Dern did a Laura Wasser (divorce attorney to the stars) impression and I guess it was close enough for people to be impressed. Driver was the stand out for me in Marriage Story and in another year would have won.

  18. BANANIE says:

Laura Dern’s dress bothered me because the accent along the bustline is soooo close to her skin color, it’s jarring.

  19. shells_bells says:

This “J Lo should win all the awards” narrative is getting a little out of hand. The movie was not great and she was fine in it but also not great. And YES, I know that “not great” performances & movies win all the time.
Anyway, I love Laura Dern’s look here. I think Rachel is so beautiful and mesmerizing on screen, but I prefer her hair darker. I also think Dakota needs a new shade of blonde.

    • Cindy says:

I agree – I think the only case that could be made around JLo’s snub is one about mediocrity. There’s mediocre actors nominated every year, and JLo’s mediocre performance already got her a nomination for other awards, so it feels racist when they overlook her mediocre performance in favor of other mediocre performances by white people. Going by the Academy’s predictability, JLo “deserved” a nom.

But well, it was a mediocre performance that didn’t deserve any more praise than “fine”, imo. Hustlers was a fun film but not one that was particularly thought-provoking, or well-made, or entertaining. All that Academy buzz ruined the film for me, really. I came in with much higher expectations and was utterly dissapointed. I feel bad saying that because the movie wasn’t pretentious at all, it didn’t try to be more than what it was. It was social media that portrayed it as such. It wasn’t a bad movie at all, it was just, like JLo’s performance… not that good.

    • Rhys says:

I agree. I don’t see why JLo must get the Oscar for this role. Just because she works hard and tries hard doesn’t mean she is a great actor. I fast forwarded through the second part of the “Hustlers” and couldn’t care less about her character development. Laura Dern’s “Judeo-Christian Whatever” monologue on the other hand, was flawless and I re-watched that thing alone several times.

    • Loca says:

      I agree with Shells Bells.

  20. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

    Everyone looks quite nice here.

I tried watching Marriage Story but quit maybe halfway? I didn’t like the way I was feeling. If I start to question why I’m watching something, it’s time for something else.

  21. Ana Maria says:

I watched A Marriage Story yesterday; it is hard to take but totally worth it because of Adam Driver; he made me cry when he SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT sings…I thought Scarlett was good but not Oscar good, but then again, what do I know? I think all the characters were written as props to Adam Driver’s character, like his part was the one that had the best lines and was more fully fleshed out…and I disliked very much Laura Dern’s character and the way she played it, all sultry and flirty

  22. Bobbie says:

“Marriage Story” is excellent and there are, of course, a few arguments between the couple but, for the most part, it’s very moving and really funny in certain scenes. It is not a whole movie of two people screaming at each other.

  23. K says:

A Marriage Story is not special, but Laura Dern is having a moment. She’s like, fully come into her power or something on most projects she touches, so I think she’s getting awarded for that in general.

Dakota looks very pretty, but clearly trying to cosplay as her sister. What has Dakota been doing lately? I feel like I only see her on red carpets, not in many films. The dress could be beautiful if the odd, saggy abdominal panel was taken out altogether.

  24. Nibbi says:

Uh, what? The “buzz” for JLo getting an Oscar is (was) so nuts to me… I’m okay that she didn’t get nominated. I enjoyed the movie (and godDAYAMN that is her bod at 50?! #goals) and it was enjoyable and fun and she did well and had a lot of charisma and all, but let’s face it, in JLo movies she’s usually playing… kind of herself, or her public persona anyway. Read: in this flick, she’s sexy AF, basically decent, kinda kind, kinda wily, fairly badass… she was good, but I never feel like I’m not watching JLo in a JLo movie… ie, she’s never so much “the character” but “JLo playing the character.” I actually thought Constance Wu was better (I know everybody hates her though.) Constance’s performance made me cry real tears & I was annoyed at myself.

  25. Chimney says:

Laura Dern can act circles around Jennifer Lopez and has actually put in the hard work since the early 80s. JLo can barely come across as anything but herself on-screen.

  26. Naddie says:

I like Laura and acknowledge her talent, but I don’t think her role is oscar worthy. She was entertaining as a jerkass lawyer caricature, but there wasn’t a lot more for her to work with.

  27. Mia says:

…FUSED…her RIBS?! This sounds horrific. Of course, I immediately went to google pics. Eek!
