Do Kate Middleton & Prince William have a secret pact to marry in 2012?

On August 14, Kate Middleton and Prince William got all dressed up and went to a church wedding. Unfortunately for the British (and now American) media outlets, it wasn’t a royal wedding and “Waity Katy” Middleton wasn’t wearing white. Kate and Will were attending the wedding of mutual friends, and the whole incident has started a whole new round of engagement and royal wedding rumors.

Hello Magazine (England’s People Magazine) slapped Kate Middleton on their cover and threw in a gushy story about Will’s “sweetheart” who looked “picture-perfect in a cornflower brocade coat and oyster-coloured dress, teamed with a stylish fascinator and matching clutch.” While I think that blue is a lovely color on Kate, the coat looks totally cheap, like she bought the old upholstery and had it made into a cheesy coat. Maybe it was gorgeous in person, but it does not look like quality fabric in these pictures. Anyway, Hello also had this one frothy little observation from an “onlooker”: “If Kate dropped behind William for a second to greet a friend, he looked anxiously around until he found her gaze.” Oh, for the love of biscuits. ABC News has the groom telling Prince William, “You’re next!” Mm-hm.

Meanwhile, a new “report” is spreading through Britain. It’s rather lame, and I have no idea where it originated. People are now claiming that Prince William and Kate Middleton have an “understanding” that they will get married in 2011 or 2012. According to random sources, “Royal officials are said to be concerned that William needs to be established as an individual working royal in his own right before he is engulfed in the same way his father Prince Charles was by his marriage to Princess Diana, and believe delaying the engagement announcement will give him more time to do so.” These sources also claim that “It is now accepted among senior members of the family that William and Kate will marry. They are totally committed to each other. In the future it is hoped that Kate will play a supporting role, rather as the Duchess of Cornwall has for the Prince of Wales.” Uh… so Kate’s going to wait around for a decade to get married, and then once she’s married, she’s only going to take a “supporting role”. Puh-lease. I hope the Queen tells Kate (again) to get a real job in the meantime.

It’s not that I don’t think Kate will wait around for however long it takes. It’s just that I don’t think they have any kind of “understanding”. I think William likes Kate because she’s available, she drops everything for him, and she doesn’t pressure him to do anything or make any kind of promises. I know a lot of people who think Kate is the bee’s knees and that she and William are going to get married and have bald royal babies and all of that. I just think that Prince William would rather dither and string her along. I really think William is waiting for her to dump him, so he can move on. Am I wrong? Many reports seem to focus on how Kate looked very “relaxed” at the wedding last Friday, I guess assuming that she wouldn’t seem so relaxed if she thought William wasn’t in it for the long haul. That’s a good theory, but I have a competing one: perhaps Kate looks so relaxed because after eight years of waiting, she’s learned how to act for the cameras.

The coat didn’t bother me as much as that hat! WOW…she is a pretty girl, but the thing is so big that you can barely see her face.

She needed to look in the mirror after she put that thing on her head.

They think the world’s gonna end like some Mayan scholars suggest?

Jeez, I wonder what stations she’s catching with that satellite.

  4. princess pea says:

I like her coat. I would wear it if it weren’t cornflower blue. I hate that colour.

I am fascinated by your deep insight into their relationship, and especially into their personal motivations. Because you are their close confidante, right? It seems likely to me that they are actually together and love each other. Maybe I’m being naive, but he is the freaking CROWN PRINCE and could get almost any eligible girl he wanted… why is it hard for you to believe that this girl is the one he wants?

  5. Annie says:

Yes, can someone explain the big gaudy hat thing to me? What’s up with that? Why do people think that’s cute? And who lets them leave the house like that?

  6. Kaiser says:

I think the hat thing is just a thing with the British upper class ladies. They’re bored. They wear hats. They take great pride in wearing ridiculous hats for special occasions.

Princess pea – I don’t know them, never claimed to. I just think that it’s a case of Acom’s razor: the simplest explanation is probably the right one. If Will wanted to marry her, he would marry her. He’s been stringing her along for 8 years because that’s what he wants to do.

  7. PJ says:

The Brits love hats. The style of Kate’s hat is called a “fascinator.” It’s usually attached at the side front, but Kate’s wearing it a little more to the front than usual.

I thought her coat was beautiful. She wears British designer clothes, not haute couture level, but far from cheap. Usually the styles she wears are way ahead of what Americans are wearing, so look for this one coming to a store near you in the next year or so. Her taste and behavior is impeccable, which is one reason why she would be a good partner for William. Nobody knows what will happen with their romance, but all indications are that they are happy together and the royal family and the public have accepted her. So things look good for a wedding, but we’ll see.

I would interpret William’s delay in marrying as follows: Marrying and producing an heir is probably the most important thing he will ever do, so he’s being cautious. He is probably permanently scarred by his parents’ divorce and the toll it took on the monarchy. He wants to make sure he doesn’t make the same mistake as his father.

  8. Green Is Good says:

PJ and Kaiser beat me to the hat issue. Those upper class British ladies love their hats. I’m not hating on it. I kind of like it. Her whole outfit, actually. The only drawback is you can only wear it once. Just like at the Kentucky Derby!

I don’t blame Wills for not rushing into marriage. Look what an effing party his parents marriage was. That would tend to make a man or woman gun-shy towards the altar.

Additionally, Wills life has always been entirely restrained and controlled. Who would want to give up what little personal freedom they have to be saddled with marriage before they’re 30?

  9. jabberingaway says:

There will be no dumping in this relationship. These two sweethearts are in it for the long term. Good pairing of personalities and her striking good looks keeps this prince on his royal toes. Their hats have nothing to do with boredom. A ridiculous thought! The British ladies hats are about fashion, flare, making a statement, traditions, style and keeping the sun off ones delicate face, such as you see at the famous Kentucky Derby.

When the heck did he go bald? wow…

  11. Magsy says:

Who the hell cares anymore, they’re already a frumpy old couple.

  12. DlisterDiva says:

Does anyone else think she looks like a brunette Lauren Conrad from the Hills?

  13. gg says:

Trey took the words right out of my mouth about the Mayan doomsday prophecy. I love whenever new end of the world dates come out because I assume they are all wrong, since it hasn’t happened yet. They just do another tv special and interest another handful of folks.

I hold out hope with Kate for mainly one thing: Let’s be probably the very FIRST queen of Britain who never lets her husband screw around. I’d LOVE to see that.

  14. Vermithrax says:

    Balding already… wow.

Also, don’t ever marry anyone who wears hats like that one. Yeesh.

  15. Aspen says:

Clearly, from the reactions to Kate’s hat, some of you have never attended church in The South.

  16. barneslr says:

Kaiser, it’s Occam’s (or sometimes Ockham’s) Razor, not “Acom’s” Razor.

  17. Victoria says:

Does anyone know where the coat is From?

  18. iris says:

    Who cares?

They will get married some day and then they will get a divorce some day.

  19. Goddess711 says:

Ewww! He looks like Edward! ICK!

  20. River says:

First off, Kaiser– It’s not just the British upper class ladies that wear hats to weddings. It’s actually quite common; you can buy those sorts of hats everywhere here (from couture to the high street to Primark!), and as I’ve found out recently, they are considered standard attire for both the young and the old during the church ceremonies.

Secondly, and more importantly– How old are William and Kate? 27? While they might not be children, they’re both still young. I think they’re approaching this relationship with caution and maturity befitting an adult relationship, rather than rushing into a commitment that may be a mistake further on. My thoughts? Maybe he’s learned from his father’s mistakes. All the more support for them, with people like you passing judgments and gloomy prophecies on their private lives!

  21. Lili says:

The coat looks great on Middleton — even my husband commented on it — and I think that if you were to get close to the fabric, you’d realize that it is heavy silk of high quality. However, a plumper, wider woman couldn’t have carried this off as well. She might have ended up looking like an armchair.

The “hat” is actually a form of fascinator, something that has been a fad in the U.K for some time now. It may be starting to run its course. Wearing a hat or fascinator to a U.K. wedding is common. I wish we were more enthusiastic about hats in the U.S.

  22. 2common says:

I’ll check back the day he dumps her again. There is no way William is marrying this girl. She’s just his avaiable girlfriend, I think the writer of the article makes great points.
He is going to do something to the point where she can’t do anything but leave. If he wanted to marry her he would have.

Who is the outlandish gay whiner who writes this column? I’ve seen many like you on the web who shoot first and research later, but who don’t actually do the research.
“Who me? I have as much right to my opinion as anyone, no matter what the truth may be!”

  25. Leigh says:

after 8 years together…and he STILL no engagement…she’s nothing more then his beck and call! they will marry and divorce just like his mom and dad did.

  26. p.g. says:

There is no “they” making the decision to no marry, there is only William not marrying her and Kate clinging on, being available, hoping, waiting. I find her just a trashy social climbing goldigger, she was wearing underwear while modeling, when he first decided to ask her out. She thought they could manipulate William into marriage, by offering herself on a plate to him, it hasn’t worked and I don’t think it will. When he dumped her in 2007 she ran around town with his guy friends, showing her crotch all over the press in short dress, This girl someone to fill William’s time when he’s looking for eazzzy no muss no fuss fun. The Palace is not going to let the Middleton’s into their bloodline, she’s tacky and her family is awfully obvious desperate social climbers.

  27. BETH says:

I THINK THAT KATE IS VERY PRETTY AND I LIKE WHAT SHE WEARS, THEY MAKE A GOOD COUPLE I THINK THAT HE MOTHER WOULD OF LOVED HER AND THE RING HE GAVE HER IS SO PRETTY
