Noah Cyrus: It was ‘unbearable’ to be compared constantly to my sister Miley

I haven’t written about Noah Cyrus in a few years. Noah is Miley Cyrus’s younger sister – Noah is 20 years old now. I remember two stories which made me say “ugh, nope” about Noah – one was her performance at the 2017 VMAs, the second was her appearance at the 2018 VMAs, where she walked the carpet with then-boyfriend Lil Xan and they both looked like children tossed down the carpet. Noah has obviously been in her sister’s shadow for much of her life, and I get the feeling that Noah has struggled to create her own identity because Miley’s identity is so BIG and because Miley wants all of the identities. Perhaps I was too mean to Noah when she was just a kid, but I still maintain… not every “child of” or “sister of” a famous person needs to go into the entertainment industry, you know? Noah could have created her own individuality by simply going to college and not trying to “sing.” But here we are: she has a new EP and she’s still talking about being compared to Miley.

In Noah Cyrus’ new EP, The End of Everything, the singer candidly reflects on her struggles growing up in the shadow of her older sister Miley Cyrus. The new track, which Noah dropped on Friday, includes the lyrics, “My sister’s like sunshine, bringing good light wherever she’ll go/ and I was born to rain clouds, blessed in her shadows.”

The 20-year-old star elaborated on the meaning behind her new song during an Instagram Live on Saturday, and at one point broke down in tears while reflecting on the criticism she faced when she was younger.

“I think just the message in the second verse, being born in the family I was in, everyone gave me such a hard time for having a hard time being Miley’s little sister,” she explained. “But you know, I always felt like I was that person that no one gave a s— about due to what people said to me online. It was absolutely unbearable… And that’s why I write, ‘My sister’s like sunshine, bringing good light wherever she’ll go/and I was born to rain clouds, blessed in her shadows.’ Because, that’s why everybody always says to me, that no matter what, I was going to be in that shadow.”

Noah admitted that she “always believed” she would only stay in sister Miley’s shadow, which was difficult for her to overcome.

“That was something I heard my whole life, every single day, my whole life. It was either that or that I wasn’t enough in some way, whether it was the way I look or the way I am. Like I said the other day, sometimes I feel like I don’t even breathe right sometimes,” she shared. “Basically, that is what the song is about, and I just wanted to open up about that once and for all, because that’s been a big part of my life, and I probably won’t talk about it anymore. I just wanted to put it out,” she continued.

“Everybody always says you’re giving the people power by seeing it, but I can’t control seeing it,” Noah tearfully added. “You guys are young, you know the internet. It’s been really tough on me, so that song is just pretty tough to get through.”

Social media hasn’t made the kids healthier. Generation Instagram has grown up with crazy-stupid beauty expectations and career expectations. That’s what I get from Noah – it wouldn’t bother her as much if she was compared to Miley here and there, but with the internet and social media, she’s always got people breathing down her neck about how she compares to Miley. Again, though… wouldn’t the answer be to “create an identity entirely away from Miley”? But I doubt Noah was given much of a choice – Tish Cyrus barely gave her kids a chance. Oh, and Noah is the one who looks the most like Tish, right?

I never knew this woman existed until now.

  2. bettyrose says:

    She’s cuter than Miley. #notsorry

    • runcmc says:

This is still falling into the comparison trap though! Plus…Noah has had extensive plastic surgery which started in her teens. It’s incredibly depressing to know she felt so insecure and unworthy that she altered her looks well before maturing. So…praising her looks, which were achieved via surgery WAY too young, is not particularly helpful I think.

      • bettyrose says:

That’s fair, although I googled younger pictures before I said anything to see if she looked about the same, and she does. So, man, that surgery must have happened really young. In any case, I really meant that she just seems sweeter and more vulnerable than Miley. TF do I know? She might be a total a-hole IRL, but my gawd can you imagine being compared to that insane narcissist of a sister your whole life?

      • Cassie says:

Miley has had a ton of work done, too. Disney does this to basically all of their child stars at some point.

      • Deedee says:

I hate to say it, but I don’t think her surgery was flattering. I was just thinking how much a Kardashian she looks like and now I know why.

  3. Ashley says:

she has a beautiful voice – listen to July ft. Leon Bridges – goosebumps every time!

    • crummycake says:

I love that song – it’s beautiful and melancholy. I had no idea she was related to Miley until a few days ago.

    • Snazzy says:

That is a great song. I like it way more than any of Miley’s music

  4. Chaine says:

It’s hard to feel sorry for her. She has had exponentially greater success in showbiz than tens of thousands of more talented people merely by virtue of her privilege of having an extremely savvy dad-manager and connections made through her sister.

    • Nikki* says:

I think we live in a self-pity culture, where so many people are victims. I’ll bet she has had to deal with a LOT as the younger sister of a huge celebrity, but she can also be grateful she’s well off, privileged, and has huge ready-made industry connections for whatever she plans to do. Hope she moves on from this theme now that she’s expressed it.

  5. detritus says:

She has a lovely look. Reminds me of old school Cher.
She speaks well about how it must have felt, no shade for her sister at all, just explaining her position.

    • Otaku fairy says:

True. It probably was difficult. It’s good that she felt she could say something about it.

  6. JennyJenny says:

    Oh, bless her heart…

  7. Lightpurple says:

Sunshine is not a word I would use to describe Miley.

  8. Ronaldinhio says:

I was a nerd nerd nerd at school
My brother 2 yrs younger was not
He *hated* being referred to as ‘ah you must be Ronny’s brother’ and then the inevitable ‘you’re nothing like your sister’ commentary
He switched schools because of it and it was the best decision ever. He found his feet eventually academically but was also a great sportsperson and arguably had a much more balanced life
It was really damaging to his self esteem to be prejudged as lacking

  9. crogirl says:

” But I doubt Noah was given much of a choice – Tish Cyrus barely gave her kids a chance.”

I am not sure it’s just Tish. Miley has another sister and brother besides Noah, are they also musicians?

    • runcmc says:

The brother, Trace, is a musician- I think he plays an instrument and is in a band. He used to date (or is dating??) Brenda Song and I really like her, that’s why I kinda know about him. I don’t know what the other sister does though.

edit: I googled it. Brandi, the oldest sister, is described as an “American actress, singer, and DJ.” Braison, another Cyrus kid, is a musician in Nashville. So yup, that is ALL 5 Tish/Billy Ray Cyrus children working in entertainment. There’s a 6th kid that’s half-related to them (he’s Billy Ray’s son, but not Tish’s) and he is a “film score composer”.

    • The Recluse says:

Then she should work in a separate musical field, so she won’t be compared to her sister. Country music perhaps? Folk music of some sort?

  10. Ariel says:

    I can’t with this kid.
Go to college! Be a teacher or get a damn business degree. Do some painting.
I heard her sing once- it was not at all good.
    Bless her heart.

Of course, i don’t get why anyone would want to be famous.
I get the wanting to be rich- sure. Being poor sucks.

But the desire for fame seems like a nuisance at best.
You can never win. You are judged for saying any word wrong when you are maybe having a bad day or going through something. And the fame attention seems like an ugly, ugly addiction that can take you to rock bottom.

    • bettyrose says:

I agree because I think that about all kids. . . but I’m thinking if you come from a wealthy entertainment family who sees everything in terms of staying current, four years out of the spotlight to earn a degree probably seems like an eternity, and if one isn’t naturally bookish, not very easy to stick to.

  11. shanaynay says:

    Was she adopted??

  12. Natasha says:

I knew who she was when she was so desperately trying to hang onto Lil Xan, I saw gossip online somewhere and thought “who the heck would date him?!” That girl has severe self esteem issues, I hope she’s in therapy.
All younger siblings think they’re in the shadow..Boo hoo.
