The Baby Formerly Known As X Æ A-12 Musk has a new legal name

In early May, Elon Musk and Grimes welcomed their first child together, a son they named X Æ A-12 Musk. Everyone thought the name was stupid, and we kept waiting for them to reveal the real name, especially when we learned that California wouldn’t allow this to be any child’s legal name. California, like many states, will not allow anything other than the 26-letter alphabet for baby names. No umlauts, no accents, no numbers and no Æ. So, weeks after insisting that X Æ A-12 was their for-real baby name, now it turns out that of course it isn’t.

Just when you thought you’d learned how to spell Grimes and Elon Musk’s unusual baby name, they’ve gone and changed it. Earlier this month, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Musk announced the birth of the baby boy in a post on Twitter, revealing his son was called “X Æ A-12 Musk.”

However, speculation arose that the unusual moniker might fall foul of the law in California, where the couple live, as names can only use the 26 alphabetical characters of the English language, according to the state constitution.

On Sunday, Grimes posted a new photo on Instagram, drawing comments from fans.

“Did you change the baby name because of Californian laws ? What is the baby’s new name?” asked one Twitter user in the comments under the latest post.

“X Æ A-Xii” wrote the singer in response, without confirming the reason for the change. The singer also responded to another comment, saying: “Roman numerals. Looks better tbh.”

[From CNN]

Yeah, I still don’t think California will allow the baby to be legally named X Æ A-Xii. The Æ is a problem. Ten bucks says that if Elon and Grimes kept insisting on it, the name was recorded in California as X AE A-XII. This poor baby. He can’t help the fact that his parents are a–holes.

C’mon, they are trolling us, I don’t understand why this is a story or relevant or talked about. Elon Musk is just a complete NO.

    • Rae says:

      Agreed.

    • Keessie1969 says:

Maybe they decided it’s none of anyone’s business? And since people are insisting it is, they gave us a bone to chew on. It’s clearly working.

  2. Emily says:

They have to be kidding. Elon’s other children have “normal” names so is it Grimes who wants this? Or is it for attention?

    • Hmp says:

I dunno. I kinda feel like musk’s mental health has been deteriorating the past few years so it could be him.

    • Yuzu says:

I’m sure Grimes wants this and Elon being where he is at mentally is diving in headfirst into the crazy. Grimes’ mother sounds sane, but her daughter is thirsty.

    • Truthiness says:

She wanted to change her name to the symbol for the speed of light in a vacuum, c.

    • Haapa says:

Grimes doesn’t even consider herself human so… there’s your answer there.

  3. Ainsley7 says:

He’ll be known as X Musk. It’s stupid, but not the end of the world. People don’t use their middle names all that much.

  4. Piratewench says:

My eyes just keep on rollin’.

Also, I see these pics of Grimes and Elon on this particular night, where she has the black hair, all over the place. I wonder, if she knew these were doing to be THE pictures of her and Elon, would she still have done her hair and makeup and outfit like this? I’m a big fan of her unique appearance but this particular get up is… awful. It’s just truly awful. She looks much better in literally every other set of pictures of her I’ve ever seen. How did she even make herself look this bad? Like, was it on purpose?

Anyway I’m always glad that a baby is healthy, and so I’ll remain glad that their son is a healthy baby boy. And I hope being rich as f*ck will make up for having parents who are more interested in media attention than giving him an actual, dignified name.

  5. OriginalLala says:

my gosh, their constant need to be seen as different, interesting, and (pseudo-)intellectual is ridiculous – they must be exhausting.

    • Kelly says:

Agreed, I used to be a big Grimes fan, but I feel like the older she gets the more childish she becomes in reminding us how different and unique she is. And she wasn’t even sure of the aircraft they were referencing with this name. Ugh.

If they wanted to give their child a nerd’y and different name why didn’t they pick a diety or something? Having a kid called “Hades” or “Poseidon” would be unique for sure but at least I know how that’s supposed to be read.

  6. julia says:

They’re using this poor child to get what they want. Their names in the headlines. Only they look like complete a$S hats, and their baby will be constantly teased. They must remember what that felt like when they were younger. Basically you’re setting your child up for future torment. Pretty much a form of abuse. Jerks.

  7. Aurora says:

Musk & Grimes sounds like a smelly law firm office or a really bad perfume.

    • Sushiroll says:

Lmao, this is so spot on. That poor kid.

Why can’t they just give the baby a normal first name (like Ash) and if they must go crazy, then just go to town with the middle names. At least give the child a choice. If it feels like an imposition, that’s because it IS.

“Baby X, you *must* be weird because we say so, because we expect it, because we gave you no choice, because that’s just the kind of narcissistic, self-involved, VAIN asshole parents we are.”

    • AnnaKist says:

To be honest, they do look grubby and smelly in the above pics. I’ve never heard of her, but thought he is supposed to be smart? Well, there you go.

    • Candikat says:

Or a Dark Arts supply store in Knockturn Alley.

  8. Mads says:

I am just going to keep calling this kid W doce (double you doe say), short for Whatever Doce.

What are the chances this kid grows up and rebels, insisting to be called Fred?

  9. Sayrah says:

These two think they’re the smartest people on the planet. Eye roll

  10. Adrianna says:

I hope this child, with these whackadoodle parents, grows up to be a happy, well adjusted person and legally changes his name to something he can live with. You can’t fix stupid but he can do something about his name…..if he wants to.

  11. minx says:

    Ugh, these two. Poor kid.d

  12. Steph says:

It says the English alphabet. Does that mean no ñ like in Peña or ç ?

  13. Ashley says:

I can’t believe this was a story from over a month ago. Time is going by too fast.

  14. Marissa says:

“The Baby Formerly known as x ae a 12” would already be an improvement 🙂

  15. Zen says:

If the poor baby does get that name he will change it. David Bowie named his son Zowie Bowie. By his teens the boy was calling himself Joe and then legally became Duncan Jones (Bowie’s real last name). Keith Richard in the 1970’s named his daughter Dandelion. She changed it and is now Angela Richards. Its funny how conventional these kids of rock stars are. Its like they can’t be weird or rebel because their parent is already doing it.

  16. Singtress says:

I truly think Elon has mental health issues.

It seems we’ve been watching him deteriorate over the past few years.

I know nothing about her. Never heard of her until she was associated with popping out baby Musk.

I worry this kids will turn out like Blanket Jackson or Paris Jackson.
It is clear those kids have been affected by their fathers mental issues.

  17. Mina_Esq says:

I really want to see these two give an interview together. He is legitimately smart, and she is a pseudo intellectual. I want to see how they interact. It’s either terrible or it’s magical.

    • Miss617 says:

She’s legitimately smart too, she studied Russian and neuroscience at McGill, I think they’re both just very pseudointellectual when they venture outside of their realms of schooling.
