Joe Biden made his first public appearance in two months & he wore a mask

Before Memorial Day, Joe Biden had not done any public events or been seen in public since March. He took the pandemic lockdown seriously, and he had a makeshift studio built in the basement of his Delaware home, so he could video-conference with campaign staffers and do interviews and such. I find all of that extremely… responsible. He’s a public figure and he was trying to lead by example. He’s still trying to lead by example.

Biden made his first appearance in two months at the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Park. He and Jill Biden laid a wreath at the memorial. They both wore somber, respectful black ensembles, and both wore black face masks. Joe Biden even wore his aviator sunglasses, which I can’t do! I can’t wear glasses or sunglasses when I’m wearing a mask, everything fogs up. But Biden somehow looked kind of cool. Not according to Fox News’ Brit Hume, who tweeted this:

Donald Trump retweeted it and the usual suspects were falling all over themselves to agree with Hume. Because apparently to these ancient old MAGA types, it’s not very masculine to care about pandemics or public safety or your own health. This too is toxic masculinity. Besides, I think Biden looks good in that black mask. He looks like he’s about to have a guest-star arc on Watchmen.

    Joe has my vote!

  2. Jellybean says:

He does look good in that mask.

    • hindulovegod says:

I thought so, too! It fit well and was appropriate for the event. And as others have said, he looked cool. I was relieved to see the Bidens leading by example.

    • whatWHAT? says:

      cool as ice.

it’s so ridic to mock someone for wearing a mask, done so as if to say “yer a p*ssy for wearing a mask, not a real man!” which is stupid for two reasons. one, it’s not “p*ssy” to protect oneself, even if the MAGAts think so, and two, THAT’S NOT EVEN WHAT THE MASK IS FOR! The mask is to protect OTHER PEOPLE. so, basically, to these MAGAts, protecting your fellow citizens is “p*ssy”. I can’t with these people.

    • Esmom says:

He does. Brit Hume can go F himself. People have gone insane with their mockery of people who are just trying to be considerate of their fellow humans.

  3. Hoya_chick says:

Even before reading this I thought, whoa he looks so cool. Lol here’s my vote Joe. Take it. Help us get out of this nightmare time line!

  4. minx says:

He looked great, cool sunglasses and black mask.

  5. Rapunzel says:

Brit Hume is gross. Apparently it is not enough for the covidiots to not wear a face mask…. others must be insulted into not wearing one as well.

    Gross af.

    • Chrissy says:

How irresponsible! I can’t with public figures dissing others for doing the responsible thing during this health emergency. Hello, almost 100,000 have died in the US! Stop treating mask wearers as committing some terrible fashion faux pas. Or worse being politically incorrect. So insane (rant over).

  6. Who ARE these people? says:

What a contrast with the slob. I am going to try to watch more of Biden’s virtual town halls because the press isn’t picking them up and then everyone says “where’s Biden.”

I vote from outside the US and don’t have US television. How often are those apparently devastating anti Trump ads running?

    • Jerusha says:

Check twitter or You Tube for Priorities USA or Unite the Country, two Democratic groups running anti trump ads. For my money the hardest hitting, most devastating ads are being run by Project Lincoln, a high powered group of Republican anti trumpers. Check out their latest, Mourning in America. Every time one of their ads runs, trump goes into an artery busting twitter meltdown.

      • Lightpurple says:

Biden’s own ads have been very powerful; he has a great team putting them together.

But I agree, the Lincoln Project’s ads, particularly Mourning in America, have been the hardest hitting. And they’re Republicans. They also plan to do ads targeting those they believe enabled Trump and sold out their party, like MCConnell and Graham.

    • Jerusha says:

Here’s a contrast to the monster currently presiding over thousands of deaths. Lincoln offered comfort to a grieving mother. trump golfed:

  7. Lightpurple says:

First, I need an ID on Dr. Biden’s shoes. Those shoes are gorgeous.

Second, Biden looked damn good. He knows how to wear a well-fitted suit; he’s trim; good posture; in great shape for a man of his age; he was rocking that mask and those aviators.

The MAGATs claimed he looked thin and frail. No. What he didn’t look was bloated, swollen, off-color, and off-balance ; and lacking complete control of his extremities. You know, like you have been trying to convince the world is normal for the past three years.

  8. NatureLover says:

I am glad that he is getting out there and speaking and showing the citizens that wearing a mask is vital I; keeping everyone safe. Though he stumbled with a DJ on The Breakfast Club about not being black if you support Trump. And of course Drumps and his serpents jumped on that like white on rice! But the good news is that this will blow over and as the election draws closer and Biden picks a female VP, things will begin to flow more easily. My very favorite part about this election is that Obama will come out speaking more frankly about Drumpfs pitfalls and the Dumpster will fall into a tail spin and that will help his re-election follow into his tailspin. I love it when Drumpf absolutely loses it when it comes to Obama!!

  9. Who ARE these people? says:

Let’s see Brit Hume in a mask. Tough guy.

  10. BlueSky says:

This is called “Leading by example”

  11. Becks1 says:

He does look good – and like a leader. That’s why trump is in such a frenzy over it.

  12. ME says:

Dr. Biden seems pretty great from what I’ve seen. PhD, was teaching up until this Spring, occasional personal bodyguard until her husband finally got Secret Service protection. Would love to have her a first lady.

  13. CROWHOOD says:

Also, what a time to mock a man who was honoring his veteran son.

  14. Margles says:

I discovered that, if you wear your glasses a little forward on your nose (kind of like you’re going to look over the top of them) you can wear them and they won’t fog up. It works! Also, Biden looks classy here. I like it.

    • Michael says:

Thank you for the tip. My glasses fog up every stinking time. I will try it

    • Laughysaphy says:

Yup, it also helps if you kind of tuck the top of the mask under the bottom of your glasses.

    • Züri says:

Excellent tip- my eyes and I thank you for sharing! I’d been foregoing sunglasses while I was in line at the store because of this.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Ideally your mask should be snug enough over your nose so that you cannot breathe upward into your eyes. Many cloth masks are too loose, but a well-fitted surgical or N95 mask should prevent foggy glasses.

      • Margles says:

Most of us don’t have access to N95 or surgical masks (because they are being used by medical personnel).

  15. MellyMel says:

I think he looks cool, but he kinda always does when he’s rocking his aviators imo. I much prefer black masks as well.

    • Esmom says:

Aviators are really flattering on most people. It’s cool that they are his signature look.

  16. 10KTurtle says:

Another tip: the anti-fog solution swimmers use on their goggles. Or, in a pinch, [gross triathlete tip spoiler alert] your own spit works as anti-fogger. I wear eyeglasses and I work in surgery, and I find that pressing the wire in the nosepiece part flat across my nose and cheeks and then pulling my glasses down ever-so-slightly works. The glasses don’t slip because they’re on the mask instead of your skin.
Good examples set by the Bidens! I bet their staff and everyone around them is grateful and relieved and feels respected.

    • whatWHAT? says:

hahahaha…I’ve given people the “spit on it” solution and they look at me like “ewwww”. sorry, it works! us swimmers/divers know!

  17. Chickadee says:

I actually think he looks the best he’s looked during this whole campaign! He looks strong, cool, and in control! He totally wins the Who wore it best?” comparison against just about anyone. Honestly, I have yet to see anyone look better in a mask! Let’s go Joe!

  18. Melissa says:

Oh yea, another rich old establishment white dude.

In 51 years I’ve never wanted less to vote for a candidate — but I will. Let’s hope he blows our socks off with a smart VP pick.

    • Melissa says:

couldn’t edit so replying to myself to add:

I appreciate him wearing the mask — the local market closest to my home has a huge sign at the front door that states “please wear a facial covering in this establishment” and I would say that roughly 1/3 of the shoppers completely ignored it and walked by.
I ran across two of my co workers inside the store, both without masks…we all work in a hospital and one was a charge nurse. You just can’t make people take this seriously.

  19. Lady Keller says:

I dont understand the mask shaming. I’ve been made fun of a few times. Me wearing a mask does not interfere with you in any way. Maybe they are not 100% effective but I am following the medical advice I have received and if I’m asymptomatic but still sick I’m doing you a favor.

    • Margles says:

It must be regional. No one where I live would dream of going to a store without a mask. Everyone has them. My neighbor a few weeks ago when they were harder to find, sewed a big pile of cloth masks and left them out for people to take.

    • lucy2 says:

Here in NJ the few times I’ve been out in public, EVERYONE is wearing one.
I went for a walk around the block last night and forgot mine. I only encountered 1 other person, and I crossed the street when I saw him coming.
Refusing to wear one is the equivalent of throwing a toddler temper tantrum, IMO. People are a-holes.

      • Duchess of Corolla says:

Totally agree with you. I am in the Petri dish known as southeastern PA, and I wouldn’t dream of going out without a mask. Everyone here wears one too, but I am well aware of the undercurrent of whiny a-holes who are itching to go mask-free. These people are vicious regarding the Governor, the Secretary of Health, and what they perceive as some sort of Democratic Party conspiracy.

I am so disappointed in the realization that just beneath the surface, this country is teeming with bigoted, mean-spirited tRumpers.

  20. Busyann says:

Sooo, the pandemic hasnt been freaking me out too much. I stay home and when venturing out, wear masks and gloves and have a handwashing station in my car. It’s all very reasonable and within guidelines and my anxiety about this all has been limited. BUT I saw that sneak pic someone took of Trump wearing his mask last week and it freaked me out. I started having fear about this in a way that I was not expecting. In the few moments I looked at the picture, I thought that I was happy to not have to constantly see him wearing masks. Then I wondered if my reaction would be different with Biden and even thought he could carry it off. As could Obama. I was right. It’s not so scary when Biden is doing it. I felt calmed and reassured.

  21. KellyRyan says:

One of the problems we face in our community is a GM who sends emails continually on wearing a mask, and doesn’t wear one. A second problem are the, “short term rental,” owners who continue to rent when told they cannot at this time. Nice going Joe, be an example, we know who isn’t and his days are numbered. Counting down!

  22. Sarah says:

I WANT THIS BLACK MASK. WHERE CAN I GET THIS FROM ?

  23. Eugh says:

Good for him, we need leaders to normalize mask use. It’s not prevalent here and not a requirement and I feel so self conscious wearing mine (which I do diligently in public areas).

  24. Scarlett says:

That mask, those glasses, that suit and those shoes….damn Joe can get it!

I am so sorry/notsorry for objectifying him.

Lead by example, that is what he is doing, kudos to Biden.

  25. megs283 says:

They both look awesome – professional and in control.

  26. adastraperaspera says:

Thank you Joe and Jill! True leadership. Serious people. Grit and determination like theirs will help get us through these terrible times.

  27. Guest with Cat says:

Joe Biden was not my favorite Democratic candidate, but this was exactly the example of leadership that is sorely missing from our country right now. And the Bidens look absolutely fantastic here.

Can someone please help me understand something here. I know the Republicans and even some of the democrats are pushing for reopenings because they need the economy back up and running. Honestly, we all do. Who doesn’t need a thriving economy?

But we don’t need it opened up stupidly. That is actually going to kill our people and wreak havoc on our economic recovery.

So why is our President going out of his way to set such a wretched example as well as prey on people’s toxic masculinity and sense of entitlement and paranoia to almost goad us to behave in ways that will absolutely harm our attempts to safely reopen and recover our businesses?

Does anyone else wander into tinfoil hat territory with this and wonder how much the Orange Menace is influenced by forces outside of the USA to push this toxic behavior?

I never would have thought he or any leader actually had that much influence on average Americans. But that was before I found out people would actually ask about drinking bleach or put so much faith in unproven (for this new purpose) dangerous medications based on his carelessly tossed out remarks.

So the fact that he does hold so much sway over a very vocal and very armed contingent has me examining everything he’s saying and doing and wondering: why?

The American people gain nothing from being reckless and irresponsible, yet this is the behavior being promoted by our President.

I have read babble from some people who are so caught up in some sort of crazy conspiracy idea that they think being stupid about masks is somehow going to foil a plot by “globalists.” What the actual F?

IF there really is some globalist plot, wouldn’t it make more sense to wear the masks and stand a few feet apart in public so that you avoid spreading the virus and can live to fight evil globalists another day?

Wearing a mask is the absolute least any of us can do for our community. Why the feck are certain people making such a fuss over this one simple request?

  28. Cate says:

Yeah, he wears a mask well and kudos to him and his wife for doing it and sending the right message. Definitely he does not look weak or frail. Honestly he looks perhaps a bit menacing if anything. Joe definitely needs to figure out a way to do some more appearances like this.

  29. Karen for Kloubuchar says:

I hear the wearing or non wearing of masks has now become a partisan issue. Pathetic. Truly pathetic. It sickens me how everything has to be labeled either Democrat or Republican these days.

  30. susan says:

Trying so hard to look cool is NOT cool. The aviators plus the black mask…no. And let’s not forget “Dr” Biden..so pretentious. A couple of D.C. game players, nothing more. They are just recycled old news.

    • Cinnamon says:

Oh Susan, thank you so much for your insightful comment. For a moment I thought this whole thread hadn’t been hit by a trash spewing dolt but behold, there came you. Trying to minimize a woman’s academic accomplishments is peak 2020. Education is not elitist nor pretentious and it’s good for people to place value on their leaders being educated and informed. Wearing a mask and sun glasses is trying hard? Maybe if they stare directly into a solar eclipse you would feel better about them. Asshat.

  31. Duchess of Corolla says:

So sick of the idiotic politicization of this virus and the morons who fight logic at all costs. The Orange Idiot is destroying our country, and his brainwashed minions just follow along.

Biden looks like a leader. He is what we need right now. Mr. Biden was not my first choice, but wild horses couldn’t stop me from voting for him now. He can stop this ship from sinking. Cheeto Mussolini must go!!!!!!
