Is Johnny Depp hurting his Oscar chances by playing a vampire?

Commenter Sassy requested we write a Johnny Depp post, and she got my hopes up that Johnny had been officially cast as The Riddler for the third Christopher Nolan-helmed Batman movie. Nothing has been announced though! Last year, there was a lot of coverage of those rumors – many sources had Depp cast as The Riddler, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin. The speculation got so intense, even Johnny had to come out and say that no one had spoken to him about the role, but that he would love to do it. At Comic-Con, Gary Oldman (Gordon in the Batman series) told the crowd that the next Batman would be filming next year, and would be released in 2011. Oldman did not make any confirmations on casting though – but they still have time, so I’m not worried. I think Johnny’s got a pretty good shot at it.

While looking up that information, I did find two cool little Depp stories. According to The Bosh’s sources, Johnny is looking to enroll his kids in school in England, not France or America. It seems Johnny has purchased a mansion in Bath, England, and he’s been visiting the schools in the area. One of the school’s spokepeople told The Bosh, “As yet, he hasn’t enrolled his children and I believe he is looking at other schools. If he is thinking of us for September, he’d better be quick as the school is filling up fast for the new term, particularly with overseas students. We’ve seen a real jump in students from overseas.” I have no idea where the Paradis-Depp children go to school now – I would imagine that family is as nomadic as the Jolie-Pitts, so my guess is that there are private tutors involved.

Meanwhile, it looks like one of Johnny’s upcoming projects is the oft-rumored Dark Shadows, which was a cult supernatural drama in the 1960s. It had ghosts, werewolves, monsters, witches and a vampire named Barnabas Collins. Guess who Johnny is playing? The blood-sucker himself! But now the Los Angeles Times has a warning for Johnny – vampires are cursed in Hollywood… if you want to win awards, that it.

Is Johnny Depp driving a stake through his hope to win an Oscar someday? The three-time loser (“Sweeney Todd,” “Finding Neverland,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”) and Oscarless director Tim Burton are aiming to bring cult drama “Dark Shadows” back from the dead.

Don’t they know that vampire tales are cursed in Hollywood? Oscar voters didn’t nominate Bela Lugosi for “Dracula” and Emmy voters recently — and shockingly — snubbed Anna Paquin in “True Blood” just as they had Sarah Michele Gellar in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Maybe Johnny has false hope because he starred in “Ed Wood” with Martin Landau, who won the Oscar for best supporting actor while stumbling around on screen in a vampire cape. Memo to Johnny: Landau wasn’t pretending to be a real vampire as you’ll do when assuming the role of 175-year-old blood-sucker Barnabas Collins. Landau played Bela Lugosi in later years as a pathetic Hollywood has-been hooked on morphine.

But maybe “Dark Shadows” could break the curse of the vampires at showbiz awards, after all. Joan Bennett got nominated for her performance as a grande matriarch in the daytime TV soap version in 1968. She lost, but she got nominated!

Johnny Depp watched the highly addictive Gothic soap at home as a kid, “I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins,” he admits. “I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six.”

Depp and Burton are busy now gearing up to unveil “Alice in Wonderland,” but Burton assures the L.A. Times that they’ll team up for a feature film version of “Dark Shadows” in the future.

“That’s the plan,” Burton says. “There was something very weird about that, it had the weirdest vibe to it. I’m sort of intrigued about that vibe.”

Johnny is one of those actors who I really believe when they say they don’t care about awards. I think Johnny likes to be acknowledged by his peers, for sure, but generally he just seems too cool to even bother with a proper Oscar campaign. It’s kind of strange to think that one of the best actors working today doesn’t have an Oscar, though. I’m sure Johnny’s time will come!

Man…even after 20 years J Depp is ageless.
He can play any role and still make it look good.

  2. Sassy says:

Awwwwwwwww man! I didn’t realize that it wasn’t official yet on the whole riddler thing….he does deserve an oscar though….so many good movies that he’s made and directors are always after him to star in one of their movies…still an A-list actor though!

  3. Joe says:

I’m a huge Johnny Depp fan, but I hate it when people say ‘person X deserves an oscar they’ve done lots of good movies. Or they were good in X film’.
That is not deserving of an Oscar. You deserve an Oscar if you are good enough in the film you’re nominated, and not just that you should be better (subjective in art, so I should say garner more votes) than you fellow nominees.
If you are brilliant in a film, and any other year you’d win, but it just happens that this year you’re against the best performance ever, well sorry, bad luck, but you don’t deserve an Oscar

oooo, I loved ‘Dark Shadows’ when I was a kid. It came on right after ‘Mr. Rogers Neighborhood’ and ‘Zoom’ when I was a kid. lol, there were not hardly any actual kids’ tv shows back in the 60s so you had to make do. And this was even pre-Sesame Street.

Imagine a childhood without Sesame Street!

  5. barneslr says:

Doesn’t matter whether or not he wins an oscar…those awards are rigged anyway and are completely meaningless.

What matters is box office, and Depp has box office…I LOVE him and so do millions of others. Even my 70 year old dad says JD is the greatest living actor today, and I tend to agree with him.

I hate the Batman movies, but if he’s in one, I’ll watch it!

  6. Enonymous says:

I never though the Pirates of the Caribbean movies were Oscar worthy or that Johnny Depp deserved to win the Oscar for them. They were entertaining and popular enough but also quite silly, made mostly for the younger audience. If Depp should win an Academy award, he should win it for movies like Blow that he previously did.

  7. Green Is Good says:

Huge fan of Dark Shadows right here! Love that Gothic Ham-fest. Team Barnabas!

JD should have won an award for his performance in Ed Wood, too. That movie is genius.

  8. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Johnny is so completely beyond awards and Oscars. Yeah I’m sure he appreciates it but it doesn’t drive him. I reckon he’s happier without the awards yet knowing that hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of us adore him, love all the films he has helped create and would go and see anything, just because he’s in it.

Johnny is a true old skool movie star – one of the few around today – who thrives on working, giving his fans new films to delight in and never becoming a slave to the trappings of his ‘celebrity’. He’s, by all accounts, charming, witty, generous and thoughtful and I would imagine that, knowing the little we do about him personally, that he gets huge amounts of satisfaction knowing how well regarded and respected he is by his fans and peers as opposed to having a lot of trophies.

Yep, I know I hate everyone but this man has never and will never do wrong in my eyes.

He’s a class act, one of a kind.

  9. girl says:

I would kill to see those pics he mentioned. Johnny Depp is just awesome.

  10. Michelle says:

Sigh. Is there anything wrong with him?

  11. princess pea says:

    Two things:
    a) If he is passed over for an Oscar, again, it won’t be BECAUSE he played a vampire. Unless time really is some cyclical loop and he hasn’t won an Oscar for his previous good work because one day he would eventually play a vampire. That’s a stretch.
    b) “I would imagine that family is as nomadic as the Jolie-Pitts,” Not at all. They have a three homes, so they move around somewhat, but not in the same way. Those are their homes, consistently.

  12. Praise St. Angie! says:

    ditto on everything Zoe said.

  13. Zoe (The Other One) says:

@ Praise St Angie! – You knowzit, 🙂

  14. Hieronymus Grexx says:

Not sure how I feel about Depp as Barnabas. That’s a heavy character name to bear, it should go to an older actor.

  15. lucy says:

I love JD, and will watch him in pretty much everything. I think he’s one of a few truly A list stars out there now.
Sooner or later he’ll get an Oscar, but I agree, I don’t think he really cares. He’s really become a brilliant actor and sooner or later it will be the right role in the right movie at the right time.
I really commend him for how private he keeps his family life. You never see pictures of his kids, and it seems like he takes extra care to be sure they have as normal a life as possible. I don’t think they’re nomadic at all – I thought they’ve been living in one place in France for years now. They have other places and he travels for work, but I think France is their home base (something the Jolie-Pitt kids seem to lack, IMO).

  16. D2 says:

WHO CARES if it’s awards material. I loved Dark Shadows and Depp as Barnabas Collins would be AWESOME!

Does Depp even need to care about that anymore?

  17. ali says:

Ralph Fiennes deserves an oscar to. Seems like all the best actors dont get the award. Its the second raters that do. Maybe voters are jealous of the creme de la creme.

  18. maritza says:

Johnny is the master in playing weird roles, he can do no wrong. He’s great!

  19. Oh Pleeease! says:

Pleeease! Those stupid academic people just don’t want to give him an award yet. They probably letting him sweat it out first but playing a vampire is the last thing that could minimize Johnny’s chance of winning an oscar! The guy is a great actor and we know it, they know it! And he has nominations to prove it so the f*ng deal! The man can make any character sexy, what else do you want!

  20. Jag says:

He doesn’t have an Oscar yet? Wow… didn’t realize that. Whether he plays a vampire or not, he’s a brilliant actor.

  21. Tinker says:

He’s brilliant, to say the least. Incredibly sexy? HELL YES! Versitile actor? HELL YES. I didn’t think how he could possibly get any sexier, until I read this…Johnny Depp as a vampire *drools* LOL!!!! I’ve also heard he’s a very sweet man. One of the few “approachable” stars. As far as awards go, he really should have won one for his amazing performance in the movie “Blow”. That movie (No matter how many times I’ve watched it) always brings tears to my eyes at the end. I’m hoping to see him in “Dark Shadows” soon

  22. nyh says:

    very good post about Johnny♥

Depp is a great actor, it doesn’t matter what role he’s playing, he always does it amanzingly and perfectly. it doesn’t matter if he’s got an Oscar or not, he’ll continue being the awesome person and actor he’s been for so many years. 😉
